The centre recently was awarded $5,000 for an Australia-wide promotional competition by Cuddly, of fabric conditioner fame.

Outdoor play equipment is on the shopping list following great support from locals who bought Cuddly products and nominated the centre in the competition.

Centre director, Sarah Wormald, said they received the most entries in South Australia.

“We are proud to announce our recent competition win. We had the most entrants in SA, so thank you to all those families who nominated the TWCCC,” she said.

the school oval. The evening will involve all childcare and kindy children, and all parents, siblings, friends and community members are also welcome.

Children have been practising songs to sing to their families and staff have organised lots of fun games for everyone.

Cath and Gerry will turn over a new leaf

It was a special occasion when the Friendship Garden Club held its monthly meeting in Lewiston on October 24.

The group farewelled Cath and Gerry Goulter, who are moving from the district after 18 years.

Gerry also has been well-known for his “Gerry’s Jottings” on bowls in the Echo.

Dave Body gave Cath and Gerry a presentation on behalf of the club and remarked on Cath’s diligent effort on running the club for many years.

Cath took over from the founder of the club, Peter French. Peter helped judge Two Wells gardens for the Tidy Town competitions.

The group said Cath would be sorely missed and she assured them she would still visit the meetings whenever possible.

Keen gardeners are always welcome to meetings, where the group shares expertise in gardening, visits other members’ gardens, has afternoon tea and draws a raffle. Contact Cath on 8520 2902.

Towards the end of the night, staff will present Christmas gifts to all children enrolled in the childcare and kindy.

A sausage sizzle and drinks will also be available. Take a picnic rug and chairs along to enjoy the festivities with the TWCCC family.

Medal count thankyou A good night was had at the Two Wells Community centre as Two Wells Football and Netball club hosted the APFL Plains Producer medal count presentation dinner.

I would like to thank Maria Pellizzari and her team of helpers for their help in preparation on the Saturday and Saturday night.

Thank you to Dublin Fruit and Veg who organised the donation of (and donated) the vegetables for the night.

Thanks to Dave and Jenny Humphrys for the prepared and sliced roast beef, as usual, it was delicious!

We also thank our young football and netball players who did a tremendous job waiting on the tables on Saturday night.

club who helped set up Friday night, prepare food Saturday, serve in the kitchen and bar Saturday night, then clean up. Great effort!

In addition, another successful night was held for the 2010 Redlow at the Community Centre.

Thanks to all the ladies who helped out in the preparation of food on Friday morning and also came back to help out on Friday night in the kitchen.

THE Highlands of Scotland are calling for Rachel Chirgwin after the multi talented Lewiston resident claimed first prize in state-wide contest to reward young and innovative farmers.

The 25-year-old was the recipient of this year’s Peter Olsen Fellowship for Young Farmers as the Agricultural Bureau celebrated the best of rural South Australia at its annual awards dinner last week.

Rachel has run her own sheep stud on Kangaroo Island, where she grew up, for the past eight years, but also finds time to work as a stock agent and runs the Dublin sales for a livestock outfit “I never expected to win the award,” she said.

Speed limits on some sections of two local roads could be reduced through a decision of the City of Playford.

The council is aiming to reduce speed limits from 100km/h to 80km/h on the entire sealed rural road network.

The two roads in the Mallala district council area which would be affected are Old Port Wakefield and Baker roads.

Council put a submission to the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) requesting the change and City of Playford traffic engineer, Brenton Hall, said the department had appeared to support this request.

DTEI directed Playford council to discuss their plan with neighbouring councils where common roads exist resulting in conflicting speed limits.

If Playford’s section of Old Port Wakefield road was zoned for 80km/h, the road would be left

with a 400m stretch which would be 100km/h.

In a report to council, District Council of Mallala (DCM) infrastructure and engineering services manager, John Tillack, said constant changes to speed limits were impractical.

“If the entire sealed network in Playford is limited to 80km/h it is illogical to have two short sections on Old Port Wakefield road and Baker road at 100km/h as constant changes to speed limits are also frustrating to motorists,” Mr Tillack said.

He said the two sections in question were relatively short and would not impact negatively on the DCM road network.

The issue has been referred to the Adelaide Plains Road Safety Committee for comment before council’s decision on whether it supports the reduction of speed limits on these roads to 80km/h.

More than luck in becoming SA’s Number 1 Lotteries agent Virginia Lotteries Kiosk, owned by Paul and Rose Pogas, won Best Retail Agency in the gold category at SA Lotteries 2009-10 Agency Excellence Awards.

It came as a total surprise to the pair, who have owned the business for 27 years.

“Even the nomination was a thrill, so to win was a total surprise,” Mr Pogas said.

He said the awards were based on many aspects of the business, including improvement in sales in the last year, knowledge of products, passing auditor tests, presentation and customer satisfaction.

Mr and Mrs Pogas were presented with their first major award at a gala event on Saturday night, October 16.

Mrs Pogas said the award be-

longed to their customers just as much as it belong to them.

“Without our strong customer base, we wouldn’t have a great business,” she said.

According to Lotteries SA, award winners are determined based on a set performance criteria.

They were presented across three sales-based categories – Gold, Silver and Bronze for both retail and licensed agencies.

Each category is weighted and points are awarded at the conclusion of the financial year.

The criteria reflects an achievement of excellence in the overall operation of the agent’s lottery business.

By Bronte Hewett Two Wells councillor candidate Joe Daniele has begun a campaign to obtain Two Wells residents’ thoughts on the Main Street development plans.

The plans, which have been approved by District Council of Mallala for the next stage of analysis, include an open air market area, Target and car parking on the western side of the main street.

Larger shopping precincts such as Woolworths and a civic centre have been proposed for the future as demand grows.

These plans have been approved for the centre of Two Wells, but Mr Daniele believes there were not enough options during public consultation.

He said there should be the option of locating the shopping precinct in the proposed Hickinbotham development on Mallala road.

Indicating he would fight to rescind motions supporting the current plans if that is what the community wanted, Mr Daniele is door knocking to find out where the people of Two Wells want the precinct to go.

“I think a lot of people are relieved I’ve taken this to the people,” he said.

“We’ve got to take this very, very seriously.”

“My decision will be based according to what the people want,” he said.

He said he believed the proposed development was totally wrong for the town.

Businessman Tony Lange said he definitely did not agree with Mr Daniele on this particular issue.

“The shopping facilities need to be in Two Wells because it needs to be the hub of the area.”

into two different areas, there will be those that benefit and those who don’t,” Mr Lange said.

Mr Lange, who owns two businesses in the town, said he would worry if a new shopping precinct was built down the road.

“I think it’s pretty scary for the town of Two Wells to put other shopping facilities out in the new development.

echo 6 n Pam Duncan is a tireless volunteer in Two Wells. She deserves the title: Bronte Hewett reports:

A

tireless community volunteer, Pam Duncan has been heavily involved in the Two Wells community since she arrived in the town 23 years ago.

While her face may be familiar to many of you as the friendly check-out chick at the local IGA, Pam has a number of roles behind the community scenes.

Having a deep faith for the Uniting Church and being involved has led Pam to many endeavours, including her role as co-ordinator of the Two Wells community Op-Shop.

While this role keeps her busy, she manages to find more time in her schedule to hold regular sausage sizzles and trading tables for the Uniting Church, volunteer for meals on wheels, help in the canteen during football season, serve as a elder at the church and help out in the annual Two Wells melodrama productions.

Over her 23 years in Two Wells, she has been awarded three life memberships.

These honours have been bestowed on Pam by the melodrama group, netball club and Meals on Wheels, with her involvement dating back about 20 years.

Pam has continued to be a supportive wife to Barry and busy mother to Brett and Amy. As mothers tend to do, Pam’s time frames are judged by the age of her children.

years,” she said. “Involvement in the melodrama has been so much fun,” Pam said.

With a final on-stage performance this year, Pam has indicated she would only work backstage from now on.

She thoroughly enjoys the role of backstage assistant.

“It’s such a fun group to be involved with. There are plenty of laughs.”

Originally from Hamley Bridge, Pam started playing netball as a young girl and has since dedicated a lot of time to Two Wells Netball Club.

After playing, coaching, umpiring, scoring and serving on the committee for many years, Pam is now a keen Rooster and Roosterette supporter.

But she still is always willing to lend a hand and has often been found

Light Beach remains out of reach Council decision extends unpopular road block to 2013

ocal families are upset by the extended closure of Light Beach road.

Three years ago, Martin Hart and Jock Brechin were devastated to learn public access to their favourite beach had been suspended until December 31, 2010 due to road safety issues.

But a recent decision by District Council of Mallala (DCM), under confidential legal advice, resulted in the closure of Light Beach road for a further three years without so much as an explanation or public consultation.

Motorbike hoons have been an ongoing concern as the isolation of the area causes difficulties in monitoring and prosecuting offenders.

But many locals, most whose families have used this beach for generations, fail to see logic in disallowing access for those who use the beach, not abuse it.

Jock Brechin said his kids were being deprived of the best playground in the district.

“We’d just like access to our beach because we are not into playground equipment. The beach is the best playground in the district,” he said.

“We want our kids to enjoy the

Mr Hart said most by the locals would be happy to abide to a permit system or something similar to assist with upkeep of the road.

But he said there had been no opportunities for locals to have their say on the issue.

“If this place was set up properly it would be used, not abused,” Mr Hart said.

“An honest, clear reason why we can’t get to our beach anymore would be a good start,” Mr Hart said.

“There are plenty of bad roads to beaches in this district. Or is there

something else on the agenda?”

Mr Brechin said the concerns were not about having a go at council.

“It’s about getting back to the beach where we grew up so the next generation can enjoy it, because it’s better than any pub or playground,” he said.

The pair agreed a system needed to be enforced to curb hoon behaviour in the area, because it affected their fishing and crabbing as much as it affected the fragile environment in the area.

Additional and quite serious safety concerns were also raised

recently, when emergency services were unable to reach people on board a stranded boat without local knowledge of private property access to the beach.

Mr Hart said a boat with a man and two children aboard had engine trouble and became stuck in the mud at Lower Light after launching at Middle Beach.

The only way to rescue the people on board was by a hovercraft launched at Light Beach.

He said it could not have been done without access through a farmer’s property but now authorities have told the farmer to permanently

Combined meetings to continue

Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch and Mallala Neighbourhood Watch attended a combined meeting at Mallala on October 5.

This was the first time these NHW areas held such a meeting and the evening proved very informative.

The groups decided it would be beneficial to have at least three combined meetings per year, alternating between Mallala and Two Wells, with guest speakers.

The next combined meeting will be held at Two Wells on February 7, 2011 and everyone is welcome.

lock his gates for liability reasons.

“So what happens next time?”

Mr Hart said.

Two Wells Regional Action Team has supported the locals in their pursuit to again use the beach.

A spokesperson for the committee said the need to protect the coastal environment was understood but time frames were ambiguous.

“It should not take three or even six years to introduce measures to achieve that end at the expense of normal and legitimate recreational pursuits,” the spokesperson said.

Residents have raised many questions about the continued closure.

In DCM’s last budget, Light Beach road and environs was allocated to receive $198,000 to improve road standards for re-opening the road.

But council recently reversed this decision following legal advice regarding the road and potential liability risks if accidents occurred.

Council CEO Charles Mansueto said the $198,000 may not have covered the cost to construct a safe enough road.

“Council received legal advice that unless they were able to construct a safe road, potentially council could be held liable for any accidents which occur,” he said.

Mr Mansueto said the money allocated in the budget again would be considered in the next budget.

At this stage, the road will remain closed until December 31, 2013.

Mr Hart and Mr Brechin were present for council’s open forum on Monday night to voice their concerns about the continued closure.

Flying the FLAG for pink ribbon day

Two Wells Uniting Church members celebrated Pink Ribbon Day with a morning tea including a trading table and making pink cupcakes during the FLAG session on Tuesday, October 19.

The children enjoyed making cupcakes with pink icing, and decorating them with lots of different goodies.

Organisers said the day was a big sucecss and about $300 was raised to go towards Breast Cancer Research.

Playground proposal won’t work, say Lewiston residents

Lewiston residents have objected to District Council of Mallala’s plans to build a playground at 210 Hayman road.

Residents have brought up concerns about security, lighting, toilets, maintenance, speeding on Hayman road, snake and scorpion hazards, wetland proximity and reiterated the need for community consultation.

Those who live close to the proposed site claimed they had no idea about the playground, which was approved by councillors in July.

Since finding out about the playground through a letter signed by a ‘concerned resident’ about a month ago, many people have raised concerns with the location and lack of consultation.

“The only reason we found out about the playground was through another concerned resident. We had no knowledge of it or where it was going to be,” Betty Body said.

“We are very cross because the councillors have known for a few months, but haven’t talked to any of us about it.”

Anne Perry said a lot of the children in Lewiston had two acre blocks, in which most of them made their own playgrounds.

“Our backyards are our playgrounds,” she said. “We’re all for a playground in Lewiston, but not at this site,” she added.

“There are not enough children to use it, especially around this area.”

Leonie Stevens said the risks at this site were virtually unavoidable.

“No matter how we look at it, this site is a risk for adults and children,” she said.

Former Lewiston ward councillor Gerry Goulter, also spoke against the site.

“I can’t believe a playground was approved at this site,” he said.

Another resident Dave Body described the whole issue as a “disgusting state of affairs.”

Mallala CEO Charles Mansueto said there was no specific notification to Lewiston residents.

“There were some media articles noting this site but no specific notification to adjacent residents,” Mr Mansueto said.

He said in council’s formation of the 2010/11 Business Plan, the Lewiston playground was identified as a project.

“This process involved seeking community input into the plan’s preparation but did not specify a specific location,” “The location of the playground was not confirmed until May 2010.”

The residents claim they only found out about the plans four weeks ago through another concerned neighbour who did a letter box drop.

Other sites considered by council included the Pony Club or Hams Park with the preferred site identified as 210 Hayman road.

REhEaRsals for Two Wells Melodrama Group’s “The Bold and the Beastly” are drawing to a close, with the usual lastminute rush to finish costumes, props and learning lines before opening night on Friday, May 14.

The show is loosely based on a true myth from the Dark ages, or even earlier. set in ancient Ireland, it features some shipwrecked scots, two bulls, a feisty princess, some brave Irish folk, a goddess and a leprechaun. a bloody battle between warring armies is matched by a battle of the bulls, and a of wills between the king and queen. battle The stakes – but not the steaks – are high.

Tickets are available for all seven performances. There will be six evening performances on three consecutive Friday and saturday nights between May 14 and May 29.

These are dinner performances starting at 7.30pm, with a three-course meal included in the ticket price of $33.

Doors open 7pm. a matinee at 1pm on sunday, May 23, will include a two-course meal for the cover price of $28.

Lessons in caring for our ‘birds of prey’ Recently I attended District Council of Mallala’s Greening Committee AGM. Their guest speaker was Anita Turton– bird of prey expert.

Anita and her husband manage the South Australian bird of prey rehabilitation hospital at Williamstown.

Anita’s knowledge of these birds within the Mallala district is amazing. She talked about the importance and rehabilitation of injured birds that arrive at her hospital.

I have lived in the area for some 30 years and sadly I have noticed a

decline in the number of these birds within the area.

There are a number of issues for this, ie. bird strikes, birds hit by cars, and loss of habitats, but there is nothing like watching a bird of prey as it glides over the landscape or watching a pair of these magnificent birds playing in mid air.

Unfortunately I have witnessed several dead possums on the roads.

We can all play a part in the sustainable management of our native animals.

Park visit

With Mark Webb and travel at night looking for food or a mate, so please be aware, as these animals move around the district particularly near mature remnant vegetated areas.

They can be found frequently at Camel reserve, Fletcher reserve.

On Sunday, October 17 the Landcare group visited Kaislerstuhl Conservation Park.

The array of plants in flower at this time of year is incredible from orchids through to grevilleas and many kangaroos were sighted, several with joeys. This is a sign of a good year due to the seasonal rains, so if you are interested in witnessing some of the flora and fauna of the

Barossa ranges, Kaislerstuhl is the place to go.

It is located between Tanunda and Angaston.

As summer approaches, remember to protect your land from the effects of soil erosion by maintaining a good ground cover.

A loss of 1mm of top soil represents approximately 10 to 12 tons per hectare. Planting native plants and grasses will reduce the impact of soil erosion on your property. n “Stand still long enough and nature will come to you,” – Paul Daniels.

Locals shine in ‘Are you being served?’

n Two Wells netballers enjoyed their end of season trip to Melbourne for Derby Day on Saturday, October 29. Most of them were lucky to arrive after Tiger Airways cancelled a flight. A backup bus was hired and kindly driven by the Roosters’ trainer Tony Watkins. They are pictured dressed for Derby Day’s traditional black and white theme, adding a touch of red.

Remembrance Day Service

Two Wells RSL will be holding a Remembrance Day Service at the Two Wells War Memorial on Thursday, November 11 at 11am.

Tony Flaherty will conduct the service and everyone is very welcome to attend. Members look forward to seeing you there on the day.

Three Two Wells residents will be hamming up some spotlight in an upcoming production in Balaklava.

Mark Boon (pictured), Anne Arbon and Eleisha Arbon will be part of the production ‘Are you being served?’ through Balaklava Community Arts.

Anne Arbon plays the amazing Mrs. Slocombe (from ladies wear), Eleisha Arbon plays Miss Belfridge (very attractive secretary to Mr Rumbold but also very smart and takes no “nonsense”), and Mark Boon will play Young Mr Grace.

Based on the 1970s television comedy series, the show is predicted to be a barrel of laughs.

The show will be incorporated with Balaklava Community Arts’ Christmas dinner and will feature a three course meal and two episodes of the classic British comedy ‘Are you being served?’

Performances will be at the Town Hall on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 of November from 7pm. Cost per head is $40 with bar services available. On Sunday, November 28, there is a matinee only at 2pm for $18 and $14 concession. More information available from Lenice Cox on 8862 1173.

Get a spring in your step To celebrate the start of spring, the Two Wells walkabouts joined other Heart Foundation walking groups across South Australia in an excursion to the Clare Valley.

The group met in Clare on Sunday, October 24 to walk around the Spring Gully Conservation Park. All members had a enjoyable day.

Janet said the group was hoping to gain a few more members. She is looking to expand the walks into the Lewiston area.

“There are many walking choices in Lewiston,” Janet said.

She said she was looking for people who might like to go walking at about 10am so it doesn’t clash with school drop offs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“I’m hoping to walk five days a week and hoping as many people as possible will join me,” she said.

Janet envisages the Lewiston walk to be brisk while the Two Wells walks are slower and very enjoyable.

Enjoy social tennis for the love of it Wednesday night social tennis has begun and there was a really good turn out of 11 people for the first evening.

The night raised some much needed funds for the tennis club.

Wednesday night social tennis will be run every Wednesday night in October, November and December (excluding December 27).

Entry is $5 per person.

Gary Farr also sold chocolate doughnuts which were a hit.

Friday night social tennis was rained out on October 22, but will happen again on November 5 with a $5 per person entry fee.

This will be run every second Friday night, with BBQ, drinks and doughnuts also available on the night to raise money for the Tennis Club.

Junior tennis has also started and will be on each Saturday morning.

Training is on Monday nights.

Junior and senior cricket has also begun.

He was reminded of the “good old days” when it emerged the Two Wells Tennis Club was on the verge of collapse.

Two Wells Pony & Equestrian Club The Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club had some riders compete at the zone finals in August and they went very well with our “B” grade showjumping team winning.

Chelsea Jordan then went onto the state championships to finish fourth in the B grade showjumping, congratulations Chelsea. Another one of the club’s riders who has started eventing with great success is Veronica Betts with two ribbons from two starts, well done Veronica.

Members are now all busy getting ready for the “mini zones” and the Christmas gymkhana as these two competitions also include the adult riders. It is with great pleasure the club announces they now have two more qualified coaches with Allison Gray and Debbie Burns both passing their exams on October 10.

A lot of work has been done by these two ladies to achieve this and the club hopes this encourages some of their other members to continue working towards their accreditations too. Several other members have attained their care of saddlery patches in September and a big thankyou is extended to Kristy Pearn for organising this day.

Another thankyou goes to Gemma Deakin for arranging the browband making day at club.

They certainly had a bit of fun and are going to look pretty flash at the next competition.

By assisting the state body in this way the club encourages them to run more of these in the area so coaches from this side of town won’t have to travel so far.

‘No talent’ night success

Two Wells does have talent– some of it sure fits into the theme of the evening ‘no talent night,’ while others prove they are talented and all have great courage to get up on stage and perform before 250 perceptive people.

The night was very amply compered by Geoffrey Lamont and judged by Vaughn Sims, Joan Post and Jo Fowles who earned the audience approval with their ratings.

The decisions: Funniest award went to Paul Bruggemann for his act ‘cop that act’.

Encouragement award went to Richard Bovington.

Best act went to Two Wells golf club’s ‘all knights in shining armour’. Lindsay Mortimer looked dashing and Mayor Gameau smashing.

Very entertaining and lost of work went into props.

Boobie prize went to Two Wells netballers .

Best Legs award went to Steve Borgas during a football club skit.
