Donation brings Bilby story to children

Two Wells Rotary Club presented Two Wells primary school with 30 Bilby books to coincide with Book Week.

The Rotary Club was able to make the presentation thanks to a donation to be used where needed in Rotary projects from local MP for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos.

The club chose to put the funds towards a Rotary project called “The Australian Campaign for Rabbit Eradication (ACRE).”

ACRE provided the 30 Bilby colouringin books to Rotary which they passed on to year one students at the primary school.

The club also donated a children’s book written by former Two Wells resident, Rosanne Hawke.

Rotary president Robin Trevilyan said it was important children learnt about Australian native animal the bilby, and how they were threatened by the introduced species of

Old ramp will go

Dale and Scott home again

DistricT Council of Mallala resolved to demolish the old boat ramp for safety concerns.

Councillors approved demolition of the old boat ramp at council’s meeting on Monday night, August 23.

It is proposed the sloping section of the ramp will be removed, while the horizontal concrete slab will remain for public use.

The new Middle Beach Boat Ramp will be officially open on Sunday, September 19 at 3pm.

The event will celebrate the opening of the boat ramp and recognise the work and effort of the local community, in particular the past and present members of the Foreshore Advisory Committee.

The project is a jointly funded project thanks to; South Australian Boating and Fishing Advisory Committee, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and District Council of Mallala.

Two Wells residents Dale Bywaters and Scott Wise recently returned from a four-week tour of the USA. Their trip included Los Angeles, New York, the Grand Canyon and, of course, Las Vegas. They even got to stop off in Hawaii on the way home.

And what are the odds of the pair coming across Mallala couple Courtney Lamont and Brett Start, who happened to be on the same Contiki tour as Scott and Dale for two weeks?

They were also accompanied by a garden gnome, which was won at the Port Parham social club prior to their departure in a raffle. Dale said the experience was an eye-opener.

“Vegas was the best place by far, then I’d say the Grand Canyon.

It’s amazingly huge,” he said.

Take a ‘walkabout’

The Heart Foundation walkers in Two Wells, known as the ‘walkabouts’ continue to meet three times a week for a walk around town.

Local co-ordinator,

Janet Robson, said the group attracted about five walkers each week but she would still like to see more people participating.

Melodrama raises $35,000 14 community groups benefit from stage show

ommonly known as a bit of a ‘go-getter’, there is not much that can slow Evelyn Dyer down.

And according to her husband, Bob, he can’t take her anywhere without running into someone she knows.

Originally from the Riverland, Evelyn made Two Wells home about 10 years ago, while Bob was born and bred in the area.

After marrying in 1970, the pair moved to Woomera where they planned to stay for a few years, with Bob’s involvement in Weapons and Research at Edinburgh leading them to the desert community.

“We loved living in Woomera,” Evelyn said.

“It was a small community and we liked the isolation. It was so relaxed,” she said.

Like most, they overstayed their estimate and 20 years later finally decided to leave Woomera and return to the big smoke.

But in Adelaide they found traffic, people, noise and congestion too much hassle. It was then they decided to live in Two Wells.

And they are proud to call Two Wells home, despite Evelyn’s initial pledge never to live there.

“If I’m in the middle of a job and I run out of something, I can walk about 20 metres and I’m at the shops to get what I need,” he said.

Despite spending quite some time away from Two Wells, Bob is still a true Two Wellian.

In his early teens, he was part of a group of kids who researched, located and dug out the two wells, providing proof of the town’s namesake.

“The story goes, this town was one day away from Adelaide by horse,” he said.

“They used to stop here to water the horses and camp the night. But there was an argument about who was allowed to use the well here. So they just built another one,” he said.

Since 1962, Bob has been a member of Two Wells CFS, when he started out as a cadet.

He continues to be a non-active member, and was honoured with life membership in 2008.

Evelyn joined the Two Wells Regional Action Team when it was formed and has served ever since,

saying it’s important to take pride in the community.

“I enjoyed being able to improve the town and make our town a more inviting place to be and to visit,” she said.

In addition, Evelyn is a co-manager of the Two Wells Community Craft Shop, which she likes because of the friendships she has formed with both customers and other volunteers.

“I get enjoyment and satisfaction from meeting so many people,” she said.

Country Women’s Association (CWA) is another venture in which Evelyn is heavily involved.

She serves the CWA at the branch, group and state level and is currently the president of the Virginia branch, secretary, treasurer and international officer at the Barossa group level and a member of Show Cafe and handicraft committees at the state level (SACWA).

Evelyn has felt right at home since moving to Two Wells, and has managed to involve herself in enough community groups to keep her busy.

In fact, Bob thinks it’s a few too many.

“I keep telling her to get a full time job, because then I would see her more,” he said.

BY Andrea Humphrys Up to 14 community groups and clubs will receive funds from the whopping $35,063 raised during this year’s melodrama “The Bold and the Beastly.”

These clubs include Two Wells Red Cross, Gawler River and Two Wells CFS, Two Wells Lewiston and Districts Landcare, Two Wells Lutheran, Anglican, Uniting and Catholic Churches along with other clubs and groups.

Of course if not for those volunteers in front and back stage, the show could not happen.

Thanks to the people who donated many tireless hours assisting in the kitchen, cutting and preparing of vegetables, cooking, serving and cleaning for the seven shows.

The meals are served by volunteers and, the bar is staffed and tables waited on by valued members of the community.

Many hours are also donated for the sourcing and sorting or produce for the fabulous meal that is served during the show, which is put together by Maria Pellizzari and her team.

Maria has been leading the kitchen for more than 20 years, donating numerous hours – but this year she has hung up the apron and has retired from the role.

Thank you to Maria and all the volunteers that have contributed towards the success of the 2010 show and all past productions.

The 2011 show will be directed by Rick Bailey, with assistance this year from Mark Boon.

“The Bold and the Beastly” was directed by Mark Boon (pictured), putting his knowledge and credibility on the line without reservation.

The script was written

by Mark, who this year was joined by a small number of cast members who made up the “Script Writing Team”.

“The Bold and the Beastly” was a Two Wells Melodrama rendition of “The battle of the Bulls”, the reign of Queen Medbe from Irish history.

Andrea Humphrys (Queen Meade) and Rick Bailey (King Aillit) gave some punch, while Stacey Seal (Princess Finabair) and David McInerney (Warrior Dan McIver) offered the passion. The music, selected by Brian Wilson and Glenys Szarmanski, complemented the show, making it another success. The comedy came thick and fast from the entire cast, and it all came together on each performance. The script for next year’s show currently is in writing and the script group will again jiggle it about to enhance the show.

Brian Wilson will conduct and orchestrate the music with his eight piece orchestra, and 2011 will also see the return of past cast members.

Rehearsals are scheduled to start late January with the show schedule for the end of May. So get your bookings ready, the 2011 show will open in May. If history repeats tickets will sell fast.

The addition of a seventh show was introduced in 2010, giving the public a better chance of securing a seat.

FLAG flies for the kids This year FLAG (Families Learning And Growing) was very fortunate to receive a donation from the Community Development Board.

“We were very proud to be recognised as a valuable community group,” FLAG organiser Helen Gammon said.

Adding some of their own fund-raising money to the donation, the group purchased a new play kitchen which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.

This term’s theme has been ‘All About Me’ and the group has enjoyed some great activities.

“We made a family tree and cooked apple muffins, we water painted Mr Happy and Mr Grumpy puppets, made height charts and a rainbow fish,” Helen said.

The past few weeks FLAG has been busy

With John Atherton WE have had the rear courtyard paved and it looks great. By summer we should have outdoor settings and hopefully some overhead cover to protect members from the sun.

‘Back to church’ appeal

The Anglican Parishes of St Paul’s, Two Wells and St Peter’s, Mallala invite you to attend a special Back to Church Sunday service this Sunday, September 12.

The Back to Church Sunday service will be held at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Two Wells at 10am.

It is aimed at attracting more people to church, with members encouraged to take someone new

with them to the service. Back to Church Sunday is the single largest local-church invitational initiative in the world.

“It is based on the simplest and shortest step in evangelism – that we should invite someone we already know to something we love; invite our friend to church.”

On Back to Church Sunday last year, 600 churches, including St Paul’s, across 19 Anglican dioceses

welcomed an estimated 12,000 people back to church.

That’s an extra 20 people per church! Ninety five per cent of churches who participated in the survey said that they would like to do BTCS again.

Shorebirds trail worth walking This summer a lazy Sunday at home could be transformed into an exciting discovery, with a number of walking trails at your doorstep along the Samphire Coast.

Thompson Beach offers a number of Shorebird Trails, which incorporate some of South Australia’s most popular habitats for migratory birdlife.

Follow these trails to learn more about the secret life of shorebirds and the samphire smorgasbord of

food. Up to 40 species of shorebirds and waterbirds can be found in these areas, however numbers and variety will vary with the seasons and food availability.

The best time to visit is summer, when thousands of shorebirds visit to enjoy the warm climate and the large variety of food.

Some of these special visitors are stocking up for the long trip to the northern Asian breeding grounds during our winter.

World of words Rosanne’s journey from Two Wells to renowned author

S

ince leaving Two Wells for Pakistan in 1981, Rosanne Hawke has found a way to bring her experiences of the diverse culture back to her home country.

She began writing books at her daughter’s request while on an aid mission in Pakistan with her husband and three children. She has now had 16 books published.

“My kids loved the stories I told and one night after telling a story, my daughter asked me to write it down,” Rosanne said.

“She asked me to write it down for her birthday. When her birthday came she wanted me to type it up for Christmas. That’s how I started,” Rosanne said.

Rosanne and her husband Gary now live in Kapunda, but spent almost 10 years in Pakistan and United Arab Emirates, with their children growing up surrounded by the rich Pakistani culture.

Rosanne’s recently released book ‘Marrying Ameera’ reflects the life of 16-year-old Ameera, the daughter of an Australian mother and Pakistani father. Ameera doesn’t realise it, but her father has arranged her marriage to a wealthy cousin in Pakistan.

Despite Rosanne’s worldly adventures, the acclaimed author has fond memories of Two Wells, where she lived on a Buckland Park road farm on which her

By Bronte Hewett brother Robin Trevilyan continues to live. The family arrived in Two Well when Rosanne began secondary school. She was awarded an Arts Scholarship at Gawler High for years 11 and 12.

At age 17, Rosanne began writing a romance novel, which she said she later burnt.

While in Pakistan, Rosanne worked at an international school while Gary taught plumbing to the local men.

“It gets a bad reputation from the media, but Pakistan is such a beautiful country. The people are kind and hospitable,” she said.

Upon returning to Australia, it took four years for Rosanne’s first book to be published, which happened in 1995 with a book called ‘Re-entry’.

Her 17th book is due to be released in May next year.

In between teaching creative writing at Tabor College, author talks, book talks and spending time with her children and two grand-children (plus another on the way), Rosanne still has plenty of time and stories to tell.

She has also been a keynote speaker at Young Author nights, has spoken at ‘meet the writers’ and ‘come out’festivals and judged the Advertiser Young Writers’ Awards.

Most of what Rosanne writes is fiction, but she said there were elements of truth and her ideas often came from things that happened in life.

“(My ideas are) from things that happen in my life usually. Re-entry is a lot about how I felt when we moved back to South Australia after I grew up in Queensland until I was 14,” she said.

“It’s also about how we all felt coming back to Australia after living in Pakistan.”

“Someone we knew really did get beaten up for his sneakers and my daughter did have a nose pin. But mostly it’s fiction,” she said.

‘Marrying Ameera’, which was launched in Kapunda last month, is a novel for readers above age 14 and has been described as “gripping”.

A tool kit is available from Two Wells Public Library to measure the amount of energy you consume in your household.

Two Wells library is one of 70 libraries with the Home Energy Tool kit available for a sevenday loan.

• Librarian Kimberley Hargrave is shown the the kit, which is designed to assist householders to make their home as energy efficient as possible, thereby significantly lowering running costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

Book Week Book Week this year was from August 21–27.

Each year, many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.

Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.

Library patron, Stacey Jenkinson got into the spirit of book week by checking out all the books up for the Book of the Year award, which was announced on Friday, August 20.

Big night for Blue Light disco Two Wells Neighbourhood Watch Group held another wellattended Blue Light disco on Friday, July 30, at Two Wells Community Centre.

The night also celebrated two years of blue light discos in Two Wells.

NHW area co-ordinator, Maria Aunger, said the night was en-

joyed by all involved. “Despite the cold weather, our recent birthday Blue Light Disco was well attended by local youth.

It was great to see lots of new faces and everyone enjoying the music,” Maria said.

Lots of extra door prizes and giveaways added to the fun.

“We’d like to thank Two

Wells Bakery for the beautifully decorated and delicious birthday cake,” she said.

“And the Gawler Cinema for their kind donation of gift vouchers, our volunteer DJ Brooke, the Gawler Blue Light crew and all the other wonderful volunteers who helped make it a successful event.

What is Neighbourhood Watch all about?

This is a common question best answered this way: “To improve the quality of life by eliminating crime and promoting closer community ties.”

Be a Neighbourhood Watch neighbour! All that is required is a little vigilance (not vigilantes) and communication between neighbours as well as with the police.

All that is necessary is looking and listening to what is going on in your own street and reporting anything out of the ordinary to police on 131 444.

dedicated group of volunteers is responsible for the continuing 31 years of service of Two Wells’ unique Community Craft Shop.

It all started in 1979, when a group of mothers began meeting for craft sessions.

“A group of young women who had been meeting together each Monday to pursue and share their various ‘craft’ talents began to accumulate an overload of completed works of art,” original member, Di Meaney said.

Hence the idea was born to find some form of outlet for their many products.

The group made enquiries about unoccupied shops in the Main Street and were eventually able to rent a small shop (pictured), which, later became the ANZ Bank and is now the Chemist Shop.

Di and Lorraine Goss, who still volunteer today, were original members of this group, joined by Kerry Harris, Pauline Clements, Beverlee Hart, Margaret Goss, Joan Watters and Jill Marton. Mollie Frost was included two years later.

The crafty group involved themselves in many activities and created a lot of quality merchandise.

longer big enough. The Hunt family were kind enough to allow them to move into the unused shop which had formerly been used as a take- away, and this was to be their home until it moved to the old Courthouse across the road, where it still exists today.

There are 18 volunteers who now keep the shop open six days a week.

But a long list of helpers have contributed over the years, with all proceeds donated back to the community.

Currently the ladies involved in the shop are Mollie Frost, Di Meaney, Judi Frost, Evelyn Dyer, Lorraine Goss, Kerrie Harris, Gail Cutting, Val Quinlan, Anne McInerney, Rae Birchmore, Bev Smith-Trim, Charmaine Bryant, Tine Perry, Christobel Crabb, Tiffany Gameau, Anita Taylor, Deanna Jarman and Kathleen Stubing.

Almost 800 people have brought their handicrafts to the shop at some time, over the years, and many remain active suppliers today.

Di said two people in particular needed special mention – Mollie Frost for her un-

flagging support and supply of her ‘much sought after’ biscuits, jams, relish, sauce and lemon cordial.

“Pauline Bastiaans also deserves a mention for her constant supply of beautiful healthy and locally-established plants, ever popular and in wide demand.

“Mollie’s biscuits and Pauline’s plants have almost become a trade mark of the shop,” Di said.

“The moving of The Community Craft Shop to the Court House was quite a formidable undertaking after so many years, but it all happened quickly and smoothly thanks to the many people who came to give assistance.”

All the ladies of the Craft Shop now look forward with renewed enthusiasm to enhancing this treasured location, giving new life to an historic old building and making it a great place to visit.

Volunteers and community members celebrated the shop’s 30th birthday on July 7 last year with a party and birthday cake.

The shop features locally made olive oil and honey, home made jams and sauces, gift ideas, skin products, bric-a-brac, wind chimes and much, much more.

Favourites come out to play in Book Week’s fun parade

n Students with Clifford the big red dog.

Children dressed up as book characters and paraded the streets of Two Wells on Wednesday, August 25 as part of Book Week celebrations.

The parade started at 9.15am and luckily the rain held off, although it was still a bit chilly especially for the genie with her midriff showing.

The hoard of children walked along Gawler road and turned left onto Old Port Wakefield road through Two Wells’ main street.

They returned to the primary school along Drew street, with police escorting the crowd the whole way.

Callisthenics girls star TwO Wells callisthenics group triumphed at the recent State Championships, coming second overall in the sub-junior division five.

The group gained first place for the march, second place for free exercises, third place for rod exercises, second place for club swinging and third place for the callisthenics spectacular dance, therefore achieving second place overall.

Coach Kerry Smolarek said it was a great achievement “The girls did really well and we are extremely proud of them,” Kerry said.

Adjudicators described the girls as a very disciplined team with a promising future.

The event was held on Friday, July 30 in Adelaide, with Two Wells competing against other clubs including Acacia, Reynella, Payton, Barossa Valley and Elizabeth Eastside.

The club is seeking new members for the coming season.

Kerry said it was a fun time to join as the group could relax and have fun with the next performance scheduled for the end of the year.

“We’d like to see some more girls come and give it a go,” she said.

Students at Two Wells Primary School had the opportunity to show their grandparents around the school on Friday, August 27 during ‘Grandparents Day.’ Many of the children’s grandparents with a junior primary concert at 10am and a primary concert at 11.30am.

Grandparents were able to visit all the class rooms and see what activities the children had been up to, with a morning tea available for all visitors.

Fluorescent tubes, HID lamps, CFLs and other mercury containing lights can now be recycled in the Mallala council district.

All waste containing mercury is now accepted at the waste transfer station at Two Wells and Resource Recovery Centre at Mallala, where it will be transferred to a registered and accredited mercury recycling plant and recycled in accordance with the strictest environmental regulations.

This procedure meets with current Australian EPA environmental directives.

District Council of Mallala Community

officer, Lynette Seccafien, said council was making a positive contribution towards a cleaner, healthier environment by making sure waste containing mercury was responsibly recycled.

“All over the world, and most importantly in Australia, mercury discharges are continuing to contaminate our land and water, resulting in damage to our ecosystem and human health,” Mrs Seccafien said.

“The good news is there are solutions to recover and recycle the mercury-bearing waste products to protect us from any further damage.”

Council is urging residents to use the mercury-recycling facility to ensure further damage is not done to environment, and more importantly, to human health.

“We need to work together to use the services available and stop any further contamination.”

“The best, most cost effective action to prevent mercury pollution is to stop it at the source, by the collection and recycling of all such waste,” Mrs Seccafien said.

The service is available during opening hours of the Two Wells Transfer Station and Resource Recovery Centre.

Bush Gardens are environmental sustainable landscapes.

Two Wells, Lewiston and Districts Landcare group visited the Barossa Bushgardens on Sunday, August 8.

Barossa Bushgardens is an example of a unique community project which was established in 2001.

These gardens promote and demonstrate how local native plants can be grown in your back yard.

There are several garden displays each with its own theme, from a fire wise garden, sensory garden and eremophila display garden just to name a few.

•Recently I visited Port Gawler and was disturbed to see that someone had dumped a truck load of rubbish within the car park of this unique fishing area.

The consequences of this action is one of dismay.

Illegal dumping affects us all, as rubbish not only looks unsightly, but also has enormous ramifications to this fragile mangrove eco system.

Mangrove eco sys-

tems play a very important role as a nursery for juvenile fish and a healthy estuarine system is a basis for a sustainable marine eco system.

This area within the Mallala District has seen improvements by the council and volunteers, who have erected interpretive signage and a shelter shed for the convenience of tourists and anglers.

This has also been vandalised by some antisocial people who visit these unique areas.

These areas belong to all of us, so please, if you see people commit environmental vandalism, just take down details and report to the relevant authorities.

Greening meeting District Council of Mallla Greening committee AGM will be held on Monday, October 11, in the school room at Mallala Museum starting at 7.30pm.

Speaker for the evening will be Anita Turton, Bird of Prey expert.

She will be talking about Birds of Prey in the area, importance and rehabilitation of injured birds that arrive at her Bird of Prey Hospital in Williamstown.

July 1985 Miss Australia, Maria Ridley visited Two Wells Golf Club for afternoon tea with 30 ladies and Two Wells’ entrant in Miss SA, Ann Belcher.

After Devonshire tea, Ann Borgas introduced Miss Australia who spoke briefly and interestingly to all those present.

She told of some of the places she had been and how she still loved to visit small places like Two Wells.

In her opinion, the girls who enter quests gain not only friends but confidence and she wished Ann all the best as she handed her a prize for having reached a milestone in her fund raising. It was a Sanyo radio clock.

Julie Steike, promotions officer and Elizabeth Stewart, quest manager, were also present and Mollie Dahlitz, president of the ladies golf association, welcomed everyone.

October, 1995 The Two Wells service club sold unusual raffle tickets with the winning number being the pre-marked spot where the bull deposits his first pile!

Members and those who felt lucky went along on Sunday, October 15 to watch the performance of the bull.

James Williams, 7, thought a ride on the bull would be a good idea.

With help from president/ring master, Roger Verbis and his wife Charmaine, James sat astride the bull and ‘hi! ho!’ the darn thing took off.

It was all part of the fun and anticipation of the day. The winning cow pat number was won by Bingo Barnes and he received $500 from Mr Verbis.

All proceeds from the Cow Pat Lottery went towards improvements to the service club park on the road to the Historic Wells.

She was inducted by president, John Newton and past president Les Williams.

Guest speaker for the evening was Kevin Bubner.

February, 1996 Two Wells’ 1995 Red Cross baby, Luke Richard, his parents and the committee raised $7,193 for Red Cross.

A percentage of this money was given back to the community. Luke’s father Allen presented a cheque for $519 to CFS members to pay for a new freezer in the station.

... and believe it or not, they even went back to Two Wells!

While the dust has settled on this year’s tremendously successful SA Variety Bash, the real benefits are still to come, with a huge $1.662 million raised for South Australian children in need.

Two Wells stalwart Steve Kennedy was a member of the ‘Back to the Future’ team which took part in the journey through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Steve was joined by Gary Stewart and Leigh Donald in their Holden Statesman, turned into a “DeLo-

rean”, from popular 1985 film ‘Back to the Future’.

After eight days on the road, covering a total of 2238 kilometres, 300 people in more than 100 vehicles crossed the finish line in Clare having left Murray Bridge a week earlier Steve said the experience was unforgettable, and included impromptu cricket matches in the main Street of Silverton, Café 96 cappuccinos in the street at White Cliffs, Cook Offs, bogged cars, parties, fashion parades and plenty of fun.

“It was the most awesome experience I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to go again,” Steve said.

Bash Chairman, Wayne Richards, said he was thrilled by the huge amount of funds raised for children in South Australia who are sick, disabled or have special needs.

“It is with heartfelt thanks to our Bashers who have spent the last 12 months fundraising that we can announce we have raised a total of $1.662 million for children who need it most,” he said

“Every dollar raised by our dedicated and hard working Bash participants helps to make a difference in the lives of so many children,” he said.

This year ’s Variety Bash travelled to Loveday, Lake Cullulleraine, Mildura, Bindara, White Cliffs, Broken Hill and Hawker.

It was another bad month, as we lost a long-standing member Godwin Leslie Halford who was always referred to as “Les” at the grand old age of 85 years.

Les had spent the last few months in the Mallala Hospital. The club wishes to offer their condolences to wife Betty and the rest of his family.

Since the last “Echo”, we have managed to gain two new members, namely Allen and Barbara Lee-Archer, who were previously members of the Penfield Bowling Club.

We welcome them both to our club and hope they have a long and enjoyable time for many years with their new friends.

We hope this is the beginning of many others joining up as members whether they are new to the game or have had previous experience with another club or, better still, with our club in past years.

We would love to see some local people visiting our clubrooms on Thursdays between 2pm and 6pm to enable you to meet some of the present members and, depending on the weather, roll a few bowls.

WE STILL SAY, WHY NOT GIVE BOWLS AGO? September is the month when bowling clubs start to wake up.

Green keepers start putting in hard work as they only have about four weeks to have the greens ready for lead up games.

Members can begin to regain their form to enable the teams to have a good start to the season.

We have arranged two tournaments prior to the season, which we hope will be well supported by our members and also other clubs.

All members are requested to find partners to enter a team, as these tournaments are the lifeblood of a club.

Don’t forget our club season opening will be held on Sunday, September 26 at 12.30pm when all members are expected to attend and to participate.

Prospective members are most welcome to attend.

So far the following open tournaments have been programmed and a good proportion of our members are expected to participate, not like last year when the members did not support these games.

Crisis talks for Two Wells tennis club

Two Wells Tennis Club has called for crisis talks after it was revealed the club has fallen by the wayside with an unpaid debt to District Council of Mallala.

Lack of a functioning committee has led the club into dire straits, unbeknown to many players and parents.

Former player and parent of a junior player, Lynette Seccafien has taken on the task of deciding its future with the help of life member Di Meaney.

But the club desperately needs new players and members who are willing to form a committee.

The current loan agreement for court resurfacing is in conjunction with the Two Wells netball club, with the tennis club expected to pay about $9000 in quarterly increments.

However, Lynette said the tennis club had defaulted on this loan and was $2,500 behind in increments.

The club would not be able to host any teams until a decision is made regarding the future of the club.

“We have two options: Do nothing – no club will exist and no tennis will be available, or form a committee, make a plan to manage the debt, and continue the tennis club,” Mrs Seccafien said.

District Council of Mallala staff recently met with members of the tennis club and the Two Wells football and netball clubs and agreed to provide the opportunity for the tennis club to meet and decide the future path of the club.

“Council’s CEO, Charles Mansueto is being very gracious and providing us the opportunity to get the club together and make a decision regarding the debt and the future of the club,” she said.

Lynette is appealing to any former members or players as well as new members, who consider the club an important part of the town.

“This is your opportunity to help your local club, become a committee member, or support the club to make a decision,” Mrs Seccafien said.

“Fingers crossed we get enough

to reform a committee and work through it.”

There will be no financial commitments from members of the committee, but fund raising will be required to get the payments back on track.

The club cannot host any teams until this debt has been reviewed, which will disappoint many of the junior players.

Mrs Meaney, who has been involved in the club for about 50 years, said it was important the community supported the future of the club.

“It would be very sad to see the club fold,” Mrs Meaney said.

“When I was coaching, there were 100 children playing in juniors,” “I don’t know how the numbers have dwindled so much, but there are probably plenty of kids out there who would like to play,” she said.

The meeting has been called for Tuesday, September 14 at the Two Wells football club rooms at 7.30pm and will include an AGM, to hopefully form a committee.

Equestrian Two Wells

Dylan Wise gets his A grade guernsey from coach and mentor Dave Gameau and above, in action versus Balaklava.

Top game for Dylan Dylan Wise played his first Agrade for the Two Wells Roosters against Balakalva aged 15-years-old on August 21.

It is a huge achievement for the talented footballer and a credit to his hard work during his junior and senior colt career with the Roosters.

Last year Dylan won junior colt best and fairest for the Roosters, as well as runner up for the Adelaide Plains association and the rising star award.

His team won the 2009 premiership and he received the best on

ground medal.

His 2010 season has been upset by a broken collarbone but he is now getting back in to peak form.

Woodville/West Torrens Eagles have showed interest in Dylan and asked him to attend trials for the squad in Adelaide.

Fellow senior colt Luke Godfrey also played his first game for the Agrade team on August 21.

B-grade Two Wells netballers Sharni Kent and Maddy Seccafien were selected to try out for the U15 Regional Netball squad.

There will be a Melbourne Cup luncheon on November 2 at the Two Wells Bowling Club.

Netball Two Wells netball

All Two Wells teams are travelling really well coming up to finals in the Adelaide Plains Netball Association.

Its great to see all senior teams are in the top four and the junior teams performing well.

The A1s finished the minor round in third position, and unfortunately lost their semi final against Balaklava by two goals.

The club wants to wish all the girls the best of luck for finals this year.

They have a few teams that have been playing really well all season, with the A2s, A4’s and A5s losing only a couple of games.

The A3 side are also performing really well at the right end of the season after a shaky start.

The club hopes the great numbers at training continue and looks forward to seeing how many teams can make it to Grand final day, with the ultimate prize of a premiership.

Congratulations to Maddy Seccafien and Sharnie Kent for making the U15 Regional Squad.

In other news our girls have run a successful cake stall this year, with funds going towards the end of year trip to Melbourne for Darby Day. Go you wells girls!

Football After an up and down season, the Two Wells Roosters’ A-grade finals hopes were dashed by Virginia in round 17.

The heartbreaking defeat meant the Roosters were out of the top four and will not play finals this year.

The following two games, against Balaklava and Hummocks Watchman also resulted in losses, with the Roosters ending the season on a poor note.

However, the team showed a lot of promise during the season, even managing to defeat arch rivals Mallala in round 15 by one point.

The team will again have many talented local players to lead them in their 2011 pursuit of a premiership.

The reserves have had another good season, following on from last year’s premiership and are well in the running for another one.

Council recently resolved to form an Animal Management Plan advisory Committee that will act as a reference group in the preparation of an animal management plan, required under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

The Plan will deal primarily with dogs, however other animals will be considered. Expressions of interest, for the preparation of Council’s Animal Management Plan are being sought and positions on the committee will be of a voluntary nature.
