Rehearsals for Two Wells Melodrama Group’s “The Bold and the Beastly” are drawing to a close, with the usual lastminute rush to finish costumes, props and learning lines before opening night on Friday, May 14.

The show is loosely based on a true myth from the Dark Ages, or even earlier.

Set in ancient Ireland, it features some shipwrecked Scots, two bulls, a feisty princess, some brave Irish folk, a goddess and a leprechaun.

A bloody battle between warring armies is matched by a battle of the bulls, and a battle of wills between the king and queen. The stakes – but not the steaks – are high.

Tickets are available for all seven performances. There will be six evening performances on three consecutive Friday and Saturday nights between May 14 and May 29.

These are dinner performances starting at 7.30pm, with a three-course meal included in the ticket price of $33. Doors open 7pm. A matinee at 1pm on Sunday, May 23, will include a two-course meal for the cover price of $28.

The newsletter, which has been running for about 30 years, will take on the new name, “Two Wells and Districts Echo”.

Why is it called the Echo?

The name ‘Your local Echo’ was introduced to the Two Wells district about 10 years ago. The publication was formally known as ‘ The Community Newsletter.’

The name change was introduced when Two Wells and Environs Strategic Planning Committee took over the newsletter from the Community Advancement Association.

The name was derived from an English publication which then committee member, Gerry Goulter, brought to a meeting.

“It was the name of a popular English newspaper many years ago,” he said.

Gerry said the idea was for the information in the newsletter to echo across the district.

“It will still have all the same information content, although there will be more scope for news and feature articles,” Andrew said.

Local reporter Bronte Hewett will be based at the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre for a few days each week.

“Bronte will be in Two

Wells more which will enable her to do faceto-face interviews more easily,” Andrew said.

president of TWRAT, and local Two Wells councillor, is excited about the future of the new Echo.

“We have been involved in producing and distributing the Echo for many years now and look forward to the extra benefit to the community that this joint venture will bring to our district,” Steve said.

“I am proud of the way all volunteers have continued working so hard to produce the Echo for our district, for no monetary reward.

“Without the volunteers we have had over a long period of time the Echo would have folded a long time ago.

“It is this spirit and commitment that makes Two Wells and districts so special. Businesses, sporting clubs, church groups and community associations should take advantage of the new Echo format and to inform their members also.

“I encourage you all to continue to contribute your monthly reports for all to enjoy.”

From Premier Mike Rann The lifeblood Local newspapers are the lifeblood of our towns and regions, and they play a vital role in making sure our communities are enlightened as well as entertained. With the media landscape undergoing rapid change, it is reassuring to see communities joining forces with local business to help ensure these institutions evolve and prosper in the challenging 21st century environment.

The Echo was first published more than 30 years ago, as a one-page newsletter that serviced the residents of the Two Wells community. This month marks its rebirth as a fully-fledged newspaper, sporting a new, contemporary look but containing the same essential local content that has made it a trusted and popular publication over the years.

I especially want to congratulate the pioneers and hard-working volunteers who were the heart and soul of The Echo for so many editions, and who played such an integral role in establishing its reputation and tradition.

I also extend my warmest best wishes to everyone involved with the multiple awardwinning Plains Producer as they take The Echo to a new level and into a new era.

‘CAN DO’ KENNEDY I

n a nutshell, Steve Kennedy might be described as a community stalwart. But even a condensed version of Steve’s list of community projects wouldn’t fit into a nutshell.

He might better be described as a keen fisherman and eight ball champion with an avid interest in community development, who, in what seems like his spare time, works as the International sales manager for Donald EquipmentAustralia Pty Ltd, dealing with and visiting more than 30 countries in the last five years.

Spare time? “I don’t want any spare time,” Steve said. “I love people, and I love helping people to be involved and getting the most out of community involvement.”

Two years after moving to Lewiston with his family in 1986, Steve placed an advertisement in the local newspaper asking all interested residents to attend a Lewiston area community meeting.

Eighty people showed up and the Lewiston Resident’s Association was formed, of which Steve was elected president.

One of his most memorable achievements in the Two Wells district was the reenactment of a ‘Lewiston Picnic’–a popular event in the very early days and a historical highlight from the 1910s, 20s and 30s.

The re-enactment was held in Lewiston during the early 1990s, and featured a slow bike race–an event which was popular at the traditional Lewiston Picnics.

The last person over the line was declared the winner.

“It’s harder than it sounds. If your feet touch the ground, you’re out,” Steve said.

Two Wells Tourism and Trade is another venture with which Steve for many years has been heavily involved. This has now merged with Two Wells and Environs Strategic Planning Committee to form the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT).

As the current TWRAT president, Steve’s responsibilities include the upkeep of the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre and the Courthouse and involvement with the region’s development.

He loves family, friends, fishing and the local community. Councillor Steve Kennedy is one busy man, which is just the way he likes it.

Bronte Hewett discovers what drives him.

A lot of Steve’s ‘spare’ time has been spent promoting and beautifying the district with a small but dedicated group of local volunteers, and their efforts have been recognised with Coast Care and Environmental Awards. These awards are on display in the visitor centre.

Also a Two Wells councillor for the District Council of Mallala (DCM), Steve has plenty to do with development in the district and isn’t one to sit on the sidelines.

After being pushed to run for council by some locals, Steve was elected as a councillor in 2003. In 2007/8, he served as Mayor, which he described as a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

“It was a fantastic and rewarding time representing council,” “I particularly enjoyed encouraging the community to be part of council meetings through the public forum,” he said.

However, his biggest achievement would be raising his three daughters.

Sarah, 32, Elly, 27 and Megan, 23 were raised in the area, attending Two Wells Primary School and Trinity College.

Maintaining a connection to horses at Lewiston, the family participated in vaulting at the Reeves Plains Equestrian centre, with Megan lucky enough to win silver at the National titles in Canberra.

As proud as punch, Steve describes Elly’s endeavours of protesting a proposed toxic waste site near Two Wells as an ambitious year five student.

The protest took place in the main street of Two Wells, and Elly ended up a television star on Derryn Hinch’s show ‘Hinch’.

The toxic waste site never eventuated.

“She’s a chip off the old block,” Steve said. Although his daughters no longer reside in Two Wells, one thing draws them and Steve’s four grandchildren back every year.

“They have never missed coming to the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade,” said Steve, who has been the street parade marshal for many years.

Neighbourhood Watch is another organisation Steve was a part of for many years, serving as a zone leader in Lewiston.

An important member of the Two Wells Tavern’s eight ball team, Steve has been involved in seven pool premierships over a nine year period in the Gawler and Districts Eight Ball Association.

But there is life outside Two Wells for Steve, who is involved in a fishing charter at Marion Bay and classes fishing as his favourite hobby.

He’s also chairperson of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce, despite being of Irish descent, and has been lucky enough to meet the Romanian president during a trip to Romania in 2007.

He has been on the board of Adelaide Training and Employment Centre for 15 years, with more than 1,000 apprentices enrolled. He has held the position of chairman of the Civil Contractors Federation National Conference Committee, attracting more than 700 attendees several times.

The much anticipated Middle Beach boat ramp is Steve’s most recent submission to make him proud.

He was a part of the driving force to lobby for the ramp and is a member of Mallala’s Foreshore Advisory Committee.

Steve now lives in Port Adelaide, but is still heavily involved with the Two Wells district, and prides himself on community involvement.

“I think it’s important everybody is involved in the community in some way,” Steve said.

It’s simple: Don’t drink and drive

BY Maria Aunger, Secretary Alcohol is a major factor contributing to road crashes. Even small amounts can inhibit driving performance.

Drivers who have been drinking have an increased risk of crash involvement.

On average 0.05 doubles the risk, 0.08 increases the risk 5 times and 0.16 increases the risk 26 times.

BAC is Blood Alcohol Concentration which is the amount of alcohol present in the blood, measured in grams per 100 millilitres. In SA, the legal BAC limit for most drivers is 0.05, however some are restricted to zero.

Most women can consume 1 standard drink in one hour and remain below 0.05.

Most men can consume 2 standard drinks in the first hour and one each hour thereafter. (this information is only a guide) One standard drink is: 425ml light beer (2.9 per cent alc/vol) 285ml regular beer (4.9 per cent alc/ vol)

100ml wine (12 per cent alc/vol) 30ml spirits (40 per cent alc/vol) Don’t take chances – DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Monday May 3 at 7.30pm in the Two Wells Council Chambers.

25th Anniversary Watch SA Family Day

May 8 will be a wonderful day for South Australia.

The day starts at 8:30am with a march for all Neighbourhood Watch members, supporters and friends.

The march starts at St Peter’s Cathedral, 28 King William street, before heading down King William street, turning left on to Victoria drive before finishing at the Torrens Parade Ground.

The Torrens Parade ground will be

transformed into the epicentre of the fun day and expo.

Throughout the day be entertained by performers on the main stage, bands’; singers’; and kids’ entertainers’.

While having a break from the main stage entertainment, you can peruse the many stands, grab something to eat and drink, check out a fire engine, or get up close and personal with a tank!

There will be a myriad of activities to enjoy from face painting to the charity auction - the perfect opportunity to grab a bargain while helping a good cause.

From humble beginnings the Neighbourhood Watch scheme has gone from strength to strength and now has over 600 groups, with 20,000 plus members and is now the largest volunteer and retirement groups in the state.

Letter to the Editor Editor, I feel real pleasure whenever entering and exiting the town these days. This occurs as a result of the lovely new fence at the cemetery. While it is sad the roses had to go, you must agree the new frontage is a great improvement.

No one knows better than me how change must occur, but we must accept these changes. My family home was demolished, and while at first I felt great sadness, I have changed that attitude towards looking forward to what will be built on the site.

My memories will never be erased, and if I need to I have photographs of the house.

We must thank our local RSL for the change to the cemetery, as proceeds from concerts last year and donations have made it possible for the new front fence. Thanks should be made to Two Wells RSL for all the other donations to this community; the stone wall at the War Memorial, scooters for the community and assistance to community members who have had a family member pass away. All this has been made possible by the concerts held at the Community Centre, where we have had a great time while (unbeknown to us) benefiting our town.

Thanks again guys – your work has not gone unnoticed. – Di Allpike, Two Wells.

n Start walking!

Two Wells residents have established a walking group to meet twice a week, in conjunction with the Heart Foundation.

The group meet on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8.30am in front of the historical park, Old Port Wakefield road, Two Wells.

If you are interested to join the group, contact Emma Young on 8842 6500, or just show up on Monday or Wednesday.

Heart Foundation Walking is a network of free community based walking groups with volunteer organisers to lead groups in the local area.

Relay for Life raises $54,000 Gawler community has put in an amazing effort raising $54,000 for the Gawler Relay for Life event.

This is more than last year and some teams have not yet received all donations, so this figure is expected to rise.

The 21 teams have been fundraising for many months, and thank the Gawler community for their continuing support. More donations or to register a team for the next relay, please contact Cancer Council of SA on 8291 4111.

veryone in Two Wells, Lewiston and beyond knows Bet and Les (Nig) Williams. Plains Producer editor, Terry Williams, gets “up close” in this special column for the Echo as a new era unfolds for the local community newspaper, which had its beginnings through the efforts of Les, Bet and others ...

et’n’Nig are discussing how the Echo started. Of course it wasn’t called the Echo back in 1978.

But that’s when it all began, with the first issue of a “community newsletter” planned in November of that year and published in December.

Bet’n’Nig were part of the original team commissioned by the Two Wells Community Advancement Association to get a monthly newsletter to local residents.

They are running through some names.

Memories come flooding back over the past 32 years.

“There was Alan Young and Ian Gameau,” said Bet’n’Nig. “And Paul Dunn – and Robert Arbon and Malcolm and Tim Wilson a bit later,” added Bet’n’Nig. “It was printed at the school, where Alan Young was headmaster,” said Bet’n’Nig. “On a Gestetner. It was just one sheet of paper. I can see it now.”

Bet’n’Nig are Betty and Leslie James (Les) Williams, an absolutely delightful couple who have been for almost a lifetime, true stalwarts of the Two Wells and Lewiston communities.

They have been together so long, they appear to talk as one. We are not being derogatory here. Married for 61 years, they have that familiarity which comes with marriage; they can start and finish the other’s sentences. They think the same.

They are one and wonderful together.

They look a picture of health and it is a real pleasure chatting to them in the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre, where the Echo has its local office.

Bet and Les (we’ll explain later, if we can, how he came to be called Nig) moved to a retirement village at Mawson Lakes about 18 months ago.

Both now nudging the mid 80s, they thought it would be tough leaving their friends and loved ones in the Two Wells community.

In any event, all their mates around them also retired to other areas, so it wasn’t so hard for them to depart in 2008.

And they have found life is pretty good where they are now.

“The people of the village are also a great community,” said Bet. “That’s what attracted us – no fences where we live and there’s plenty to keep us busy and a great environment with parks and lakes.”

Les recently joined the local residents’ committee. He says he had decided to cut back on community involvement, but what the heck, “someone has to do it.”

Bet will be remembered by many as the Two Wells correspondent for the Plains Producer, publisher of the Echo.

She wrote her weekly column, Two Wells Talk, from January 31, 1985, after first being approached by the late Roger Manuel, father of

Together in grade seven, Les obviously made an impression on young Bet. He used to kick her school case.

Ten years later, in 1949, the pair married.

During this training period, from 1948-50 he boarded in Woodville and met Bet again after she moved there with her family when her father transferred to Woodville primary.

They married in 1949 and returned to Lewiston in the early 50s to start a family.

But in 1956 they were off to Lameroo, farming for the next seven years.

Back to Lewiston in 1963, where Les set up one of the State’s first chicken farms, working it until 1980.

Being a carpenter certainly helped, as it did with the three houses they were to build over the years.

“We had the walls built and I did the rest,” Les says.

“Drew street cost 1500 pounds, the next was $7000 and the final home, built in 1980 on the Gawler road, cost about $25,000.”

Moving on to the present, Les and Bet are like everyone else ... they wonder what Two Wells will be like in five years time.

“Transport has changed the town,” Bet said.

“I remember when the highway bypassed Two Wells. You could have shot a gun down the street and not hit anyone.

“Businesses were concerned about no traffic – but it wasn’t long before people started coming back.

“And Lewiston now seems covered with houses. But there are so many trees too. It’s beautiful.”

So what’s next for Bet’n’Nig? Another trip overseas. They’ve been around the world a few times, only recently returned from Tasmania and in August it’s a visit to the UK, with three days in Istanbul on the way home.

There’s just one more thing to discuss. How did Les get the ‘Nig’ knickname?

“When I was a kid the family used to spend summer holidays at Middle Beach.

I spent a lot of time running around in the sun,” says Les. You can work the rest out for yourself.

District Council of Mallala news

Have your say on main street revamp Two Wells has been growing steadily and is set to undergo a period of considerable expansion to the north of the town, potentially accommodating up to 2,500 new dwellings.

The objective of this project is to develop a strong planning framework for the Main Street Precinct (by means of Design Guidelines and Desired Character Statements) to ensure the existing Town Centre can be expanded to cater for a growing community in a manner that strengthens its special character.

This project builds upon the previous Two Wells Urban Design Framework Project, focusing specifically on the Main Street Precinct and the development of a concept design for the proposed Market Plaza Area, to

be located in the vicinity of the police block and the library. The project is jointly funded by the State government’s Better Places for People Program and the District Council of Mallala.

Forming a detailed visual and verbal analysis of a place’s current and/or desired future character, Design Guidelines and Desired Character Statements are an important tool

used to communicate the look, feel and function of the public and private realm.

These tools will enable council and developers to work together to ensure that the Two Wells Main Street Precinct grows in a way that respects the existing character of the area, with holistic consideration as to how a certain development may fit within the broader precinct framework.

‘A Day In The Town’

Where: Two Wells Community Library.

When: Saturday May 29, from 10am to 2pm, with a sausage sizzle from midday!

This will be a great opportunity to talk and share ideas with members of the project team from JPE and WAX about Two Wells and the main street precinct, in respect to the draft versions of the Design Guidelines, Desired Character Statements and Market Plaza Concept Design.

Wetlands our local ‘wonder’ With Mark Webb

A small group congregated at the Lewiston wetlands on April 18 to explore the region and its qualities.

Twelve members of the Landcare and Greening group and District Council of Mallala mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, attended the walk and talk along the Lewiston Wetlands into Hams Park.

The group looked at the plants and how they have stood up to the drought conditions.

A tree planting project has created a great area for recreation over the years. It is the perfect place for recreational activities such as bird watching, walking, and horse riding.

But it is surprising to learn many locals don’t know what or where the wetland area is.

Lewiston Wetlands run from Dawkins road in the south, to Hayman road in the north, having a total area of 15.3 hectares.

The first trees to be planted were on National Planet Ark Schools Day on Friday, July 26, 2002.

Students from Gawler Primary School, Trinity, Angle Vale, Pulteney Grammar School and Two Wells Primary joined students in the Conservation and Land Management Program at TAFE SA Roseworthy campus to be involved in the planting day.

Total attendance was 1000 people with the planting of about 4000 plants.

Since then the planting day has been held on the first Friday in June, which is World Environment Day. Over the past eight years about 24,000 plants, including grasses, shrubs, aquatic plants and a few trees, have been planted in the channel and over the entire site.

If it was not for the local landcare group volunteers, students, teachers, parents and grandparents along with District Council of Mallala staff, this project would not have gone ahead.

There were some concerns regarding the large eucalyptus in the Hams park estate and there is hope those on blocks that have been sold will be maintained.

The track through the wetlands needs a bit of a clean up and the cross overs are a concern with the build up of soil on them.

We live in a area that is rich in environmental assets but we can only protect these assets if people use them and value them.

As you may be aware the Mallala district is growing at a tremendous rate and now is the time to appreciate what we have before we carve it up and lose it forever.

The next monthly activity is on Sunday, May 23 at Camel and Fletcher Reserve.

Mums and kids fly the ‘FLAG’ The Families Learning and Growing group (FLAG) has regrouped after school holidays and had a fun morning on Tuesday, April 20, making “poppies” and talking about Anzac Day. There were also sprigs of Rosemary on the tables for the group to touch,

feel and smell. Each child was able to take their poppy and Rosemary home with them in readiness for Anzac Day. If you have a pre-school aged child or children and would like to join, you will be most welcome.

The group meets every Tuesday, so just come along to the Uniting Church

Hall (corner Gawler road and Drew street) each Tuesday morning from about 9.30am – noon.

The group welcomes all new participants.

Volunteer thanks National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the largest celebration of volunteering in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than five million Australians who volunteer.

Children from Two Wells and the district got a dose of disco fever on Friday night, April 30 with another Blue Light disco taking over the Community Centre.

Although the turnout was not as good as the last disco, there were still plenty of children dancing the night away.

Gawler policemen Chief Inspector Bill Prior and Probationary Officer Daniel Lamb were in control of the 8–17 yearold crowd from 7 to 9.30pm.

Members of Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch Group presented the event.

They served in the canteen and all reports suggested a good night was had by all.

New team, same quality at Two Wells Meats • ADVERTISING FEATURE Shelley and Anthony Phillips have recently taken over Two Wells Meat Store from Dave and Jenny Humphrys, with Dave continuing on with his butcher role at the shop.

Shelley and Anthony are former locals who now live in Angle Vale with their two boys, aged 7 and 4.

Some people might remember Shelley as the hairdresser at ‘Shelley’s hair bun’, which was her hairdressing salon in Mallala. Anthony is a boner/ butcher who has previously worked at PC North East Meat Market and Whole co. He has been in the meat industry for many years.

They are enjoying the challenge of running the butcher shop and said Dave had left a great foundation to start from.

“It’s a big change, and it’s a lot different to what we were expecting,” Shelley said.

“But we are enjoying the challenge and it’s an absolute pleasure to have Dave still working here,” she said.

Shelley’s parents are former locals Lyn and Dennis Browne, and Anthony’s parents are Sandra and Pug Phillips, also formerly from Two Wells.

Haydn and Pauline Routley took over the shop on March 9 and said the friendly locals have made them very welcome. The couple live in Enfield with their three children, and plan to spend weekends in Two Wells.

An experienced baker, Haydn had been working at Food Mont in recent years, but owned ‘Haydn’s Bakery’ at Gepps Cross 13 years ago.

Pauline is a registered nurse and had been working at Burnside hospital for the past few years since selling the bakery at Gepps Cross.

She said the change of industry has been a wonderful experience.

The Routley children can regularly be found helping in the shop. Alex, 13 works on the weekend, Jonathan, 18 helps out when he can and Andrew, 20 helps out in between his other job.

“We couldn’t have been made more welcome,” Pauline said. “The people are wonderful, friendly and supportive.”

The Two Wells Football and Netball club guernsey auction was a huge success on Saturday, May 1, with $19,500 raised for the club.

The Roosters had a good day on the field, beating Balaklava in the A grade by 16 points in the originalstyle Two Wells guernseys. These guernseys were auctioned off with the players at the auction.

Groups of three (an A-grade footballer, B-grade footballer and netballer) were auctioned off with the highest bid reaching $2,000.

Ned Seccafien, Kirralee Rosewarne and Chris Cristofis were the only team to reach the two thousand mark. Close behind were Ben Spiteri, Clinton McDonald and Kylie Henwood and Lee Allmond, Bert Lange and Casey Kent.

The Two Wells Football & Netball Club received a $3000 cheque from Bendigo Bank on Monday, May 3.

This will be used to help upgrade the clubrooms and change rooms.

“Our change rooms need major renovations to be up to APFL standard. As they are, we are unable to host finals games,” club secretary, Allison Goss said.

“We have also outgrown our clubrooms which are in need of an update and extension. To be successful in our grant application we need to supply half of the cost ourselves. Hence we are madly fundraising to accumulate these funds.” n IN other club news – This year the club is selling tickets for its exclusive “200 CLUB”. It costs $100 per ticket, which gives you entry in the draw, entry to the “grand finale” on July 24 at the club – and allows you

to purchase another entry ticket to the “grand finale” for an extra $30. It does not give you entry into the prize draw.

A great first prize of $5,000 is up for grabs, followed by prizes of $2500, $1000 and $500, PLUS five prizes of $100 in the weeks leading up to this date.

The “grand finale” is sure to be a fun night with a DJ, beer, wine and supper supplied. Give bowls a try! Call for young players Two Wells Bowling Club is calling on new recruits for the next pennants season, after the club’s first team on Saturday pennants finished in bottom position.

Two Wells will now be dropped from the higher division, having lasted only two years in the premier section of the competition.

Club publicity officer, Gerry Goulter said this was the biggest disappointment of the season, as other clubs had the advantage of financial stability and younger recruits.

“We lost three good bowlers in father and son Scott and John Wise plus Allen Clark. When you lose bowlers of their calibre it makes the strength of your membership that much weaker,” Gerry said.

“It also appears many of the other clubs’recruited well and we cannot compete with the larger

Mr Goulter wants to encourage as many young recruits as possible to get involved with the sport, with many larger clubs recruiting younger members and training them to a very high standard.

“Surprisingly enough, the game of bowls is no

longer a game for the over 55 years– it is now for all ages,” Gerry said.

The bowls season has now finished with the last event being a tournament on ANZAC day. The club had an enjoyable season with eight new members and one past member returning after a threeyear break.

“Reviewing the season, it has had its “ups

and downs” but overall was successful,” Mr Goulter said.

The second Saturday team who played in Metro Division 3 North East finished as runners up, which may give them the promotion they seek to get into the Metro 2 grades.

In the Wednesday Metro competition, the club were in Division

1 North and finished up winning the pennant, and should now be promoted to Premier 2. The other various men and lady teams all finished in the lower half of their divisions.

What the club would like to see is for parents to encourage their children to give the sport a try.

Future newsletters nearer to the start of next season will carry information on who to contact about the training of your child and what is expected from parents.

Now this encouragement applies also for males and females. If you do venture to enquire about playing bowls, you may be lucky to play in the same team as your child (children). What a thrill this would be for the members of your family.

The club’s annual general meeting was held on Sunday, May 2.

He made the SA clay target team:

At the SA State clay target championships in February this year, Angus Tapscott was selected as a reserve for the state junior team.

One team member was ineligible and one pulled out, letting Angus have the opportunity to compete at the National Championships in Wagga Wagga from April 12–17.

As a family we travelled over to Wagga and stayed in the beautiful Wagga Wagga beach caravan park on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River for nine nights.

The opening of the Nationals was a very big event and was covered by the local newspapers and TV. Monday morning (12th) we had to be at the grounds of ACTA (Australian Clay Target Ass.) at 7am. It was freezing cold! This probably helped to cover our nerves as we would have been shaking anyway.

The SA team members had to be in their uniforms. They began the National Championship event first where juniors, ladies, veterans and the open teams from each state shot shoulder to shoulder, then the points were added up.

Next they had to have team photos. The ceremony began with a bagpiper leading all the state teams onto the grounds in a march.

Amusingly, the biggest bit of the ceremony was for the best dressed state! Western Australia won it this year hands down. They looked really smart.

Then the team scores were announced. Our SA juniors came fourth nationally with a score of 72/75. That was great for their first Nationals and seeing as they were up against some of Australia’s best junior shooters.

The most exciting part of the day was that our open team tied with Victoria and had to have a shoot off.

Angus aims high after the shoot off. Everyone was really excited as SA has the best five shooters in Australia this year.

Later in the week, we had our team dinner and the Victorian shooter who missed his target to let SA win was warmly welcomed to join our table for a free drink.

The ceremony was officially opened with a novice shooter breaking the first clay. After he forgot to take the safety off, he managed to hit the next target.

Then it was onto business.

Angus competed as a sub junior for the Nationals which is under 15 years.

There were approximately 600 shooters competing for the week. Of these, about 25 were sub juniors.

The first event was the 70th champions of champions where shooters shoot off 18 metres as opposed to the normal 15 metres.

It is composed of 25 target double barrel, 25 target single barrel and 25 target point score. Angus shot 108/125.

On Tuesday, the event was the 50th National Double Rise Champi-

onship. Angus scored 74/100.

In the afternoon, Angus and his Dad, Greg entered the 9th national and family deauville doubles off 20 metres and they shot 17/20. Angus hit all his targets.

Wednesday was the 59th national double barrel championships. Angus scored a commendable 48/50.

Thursday was the 56th national single barrel championships where he shot 87/100.

Friday was the 49th Australian and New Zealand point score championships. Angus shot 269/300 which included a possible 25/25 score.

As you can imagine by these scores, Angus got progressively more tired as the week went. It was a lot of shooting.

Also, large events like these are not common on a state level, so he did really well to keep shooting consistently.

Saturday was the 61st grand Australian handicap. Angus shot a 35/50 off 19 metres.

While he did not get a place in any event, he was only ever a cou-

ple of points behind the winners, and shot consistently well to be placed 6th overall nationally with a score of 621/725 for the week in sub juniors.

That is a really good achievement for his first nationals and being only 13.

Angus is very happy with this achievement and mostly enjoyed the experience gained by attending a National competition.

He was able to watch some of Australia’s best shooters and got to meet Russell Mark, an Olympic shooter and a really nice man.

Angus spent about half an hour chatting to him and got his shooting jacket signed and a photo with Russell.

Russell Mark has competed in five Olympic Games, won a gold

medal in double trap-shooting at the 1996 Atlanta Games and a silver four years later in Sydney.

Angus also got to know another great shooter, Arty Del Ben, and some leading junior shooters like Jack Norwood from New Zealand and Geoff Ashton from Victoria.

The week was an unforgettable experience, and it will help to improve his shooting at home, especially as he made it into A grade only a week before the Nationals.

He was up against some tough competition at Wagga, as clay target shooting in the eastern states is much bigger than in SA. This year he is looking forward to using what he has learnt and hopes to make the state team again next year.
