Mayor’s Christmas Message As you might imagine this has been a challenging time being Mayor, as it is for all of us. Civic duties have been cut to a minimum as it is no longer possible to have any gatherings or events that can’t be socially distanced, meaning virtually all summer fairs, concerts and festivals were cancelled or postponed. Having said that we have been able to do some Citizenship ceremonies, have a reduced Remembrance Day Commemoration and hold the annual London Mayor’s Service at Westminster Abbey under very controlled conditions. It was also good to see there have been one or two new business openings despite current trading conditions and I have been out and about visiting town centres and high streets across the Borough supporting our businesses in and out of lockdown.

Normally one of the main Mayoral roles is to collect money for our nominated charities but it has not been possible to do very much so far, though we did manage to have a team in the recent Richmond Running Festival 10K in Kew Gardens! We are investigating online fundraising activities and hope to be able to run some of these in the New Year. If you would like to donate to either of my charities, details are below and any contributions would be gratefully received!

Christmas events have largely suffered the same fate as the summer ones and although there will be trees and lights everywhere, the traditional switch-ons and carols will be done remotely. Look out for online events and it has never been more important to support your local businesses, so shop local!

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and let’s hope 2021 sees us getting past this pandemic and returning to some sort of normality!

There were SEVENTEEN lucky winners in the first ever draw of the Richmond Borough community lottery GET LUCKY LOCAL on the 19th November.

As well as the special non-cash prizes of an iPad and two six bottle cases of champagne, two players won £25 and TWELVE players won three extra tickets.

Lucky Lauren Appleby, from Richmond, who chose to support the Get Lucky Local Community Fund and won the iPad, said: “I was shocked and overjoyed when I found out I’d won a brand new iPad! Get Lucky Local is a wonderful new way to support local causes, which, now more than ever, need all the help they can get!

“I didn’t think for a minute that I’d win, I was just happy to be able to help my local community in a small way. It was so quick and easy to set up a direct debit, and you can either pick a specific cause or spread the love with the community fund.

“If anyone can spare the price of one coffee each week and buy a couple of tickets, I’d highly recommend getting involved...all of the great causes win, and so could you...I did!”

A total of 826 tickets were sold and THIRTY NINE local groups had signed up as beneficiaries.

The winners included players in Richmond, Twickenham and Hampton.

The organisations supported by the winners include Hampton Hill Theatre (Home of Teddington Theatre Club) the NPL Sports Club, Hearts of Teddlothian FC, ETNA Community Centre and Teddington Cricket Club.

COPAS The Copas family have been farming their land since 1901, but it wasn’t until 1957 that they took a giant leap into turkey rearing, and it all started with a rather pointed gift. Tom Copas Senior was a teenager in 1957 and as he was far too impatient for school, so his father thought it was time for a hobby. The result, a gift of 153 turkeys, blossomed into a small business which in turn became the respected heritage brand that Copas Traditional Turkeys is today.

Now in its 63rd year, the Copas family believe that the very best turkey is given a long life with room to roam free from an early age. The birds spend their days enjoying the meadows, basking in the sunshine when it comes out, and pecking at the ground for extra worms or treats. You can even check out their turkey cam and may spot something large and white. That’ll be one of the Copas alpacas who work hard to protect the turkeys from foxes.

Sandys Cooking Tip: Due to the age-old production processes of hand plucking and game hanging, these birds need little work in your kitchen. Half an onion, half a lemon, some bay leaf, rosemary, thyme, sage and a few cloves of garlic placed in the cavity with a seasoning of salt and pepper inside and out is all you need!

PEACH CROFT Based in rural South Oxfordshire, Bill Homewood and the Peach Croft family have been producing traditionally reared British turkeys and geese for nearly eighty years.

During the day the small flocks enjoy the freedom to roam in grassy paddocks and fields around the farm. At night they are bedded down on fresh straw.

Grown naturally and slowly to full maturity, they enjoy a completely natural diet that includes their home-grown cereals.

This care and pride in nurturing their birds is reflected by their loyal customer following.

Peach Croft geese come in an easy carry-home box with full cooking instructions.

Sandys Cooking Tip: This bird doesn’t need a massive amount of work either.

Inserting half an orange, onion, sage, rosemary and bay into the cavity is enough.

Gently scoring the skin and rubbing with salt will help to render out the fat and caramelise the skin. It’s also good to cook the goose on a rack to avoid boiling it in its own fat.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Twickmas...

In an attempt to still spread some festive cheer this year, Discover Twickenham Business Improvement District decided to have the new lights turned on in Twickenham Town Centre a little earlier than usual!

Due to the current restrictions a normal ‘big switch on’ event could not go ahead. However, on Saturday 14th November, the Mayor of Richmond, Cllr Geoff Acton, braved the weather and came to switch on the Christmas tree lights for us.

On the day, Discover Twickenham also arranged a 3-hour live radio show with Riverside Radio that celebrated all things Twickenham.

There were interviews with many of the local businesses including, Star Print Stationers, Sandys

Fishmongers, Eel Pie Records, The Yoga Bar, Crusader Travel, Emporium, The Brewery Market, and the homeless charity Spear. If you missed the live show you can find the link to the recording over on the @discovertwick Twitter page.

All of the new lights on the high street are funded by the local businesses in Twickenham and the trees have been supplied by Cousins Greengrocers on King Street. Please share the love and remember to show your appreciation by shopping local for your Christmas goodies this year!

It can only be one person, Mrs Laxmi M Thakrar of Star PRINT Stationery & Artists Materials Shop.

Twickenham has been home for several generations of the family and therefore it was seen to be a good place to open a business.

Her brother- in- law Ravi had an opportunity to buy a print business on Twickenham high street in 1984. Over the past 36 years, the family have developed the business to become a specialist stationers and added a good range of Artist Materials that they are still growing and developing today. The shop’s most popular products are Stationery including printer ink, Artist Materials, and children’s school / art and craft requirements.

Being a part of the community and being able to contribute to it, is important to the family. They often offer raffle prizes to various local schools to help raise funds. When her children were younger, together with her sister in law, Laxmi used to make onion and potato bhajis at the summer fair, which always managed to raise a fantastic amount for the school. Cancer Research is another cause close to the hearts of all at Star Print. Doing a half marathon night walk for cancer research together with her sister- in- law and niece they managed to raise over £3000.

Over the 30 years that the family business has served the local community, Laxmi has seen a lot of change in Twickenham: more homes, the development of roads, the train station and changes to the riverside. However, the one constant has been the plethora of customers who come back time and time again, many of whom have become good friends. “We pride ourselves in good customer service and we’ve always tried to meet and fulfil our customers requirements.” This is of course why people come back time and time again, and why they bring their children and their children’s children, the next generation of customers.

Situated on the west coast of British Columbia lies one of the last great tracts of unspoilt wilderness in the world; the Great Bear Wilderness. Rarely visited except for the fishermen and the First Nations who call it home, this continuous stretch of temperate rainforest holds many secrets but none more sacred than that of Moksgm’ol, known colloquially as the Spirit Bear.

Hear how a whole population of white bears went undiscovered for centuries protected under the watchful eyes of the local population and the ancestors. Discover how an entire oceanic ecosystem has become intrinsically intertwined with that of this rainforest. Finally, learn how multiple threats have converged on this virgin land which not only threaten the bears but could unpick the threads holding this web of beauty together.

Matt, an ecologist, environmentalist and tour guide based in Devon, returns by popular request, following his excellent online talk on cuckoos. He says “In a world so disconnected from nature, I aspire to help people rediscover the natural world and promote the importance of its conservation.”

The Arts in Twickenham Richard Mills This month I spoke to Imogen Bond, the former Director at the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, who told me about her latest project; she has started her own company Bumblebee, which ‘sends subscribers a beautiful and unusual book each month, plus clever creative prompts for things to write, do, make or cook – all inspired by the book’. Adults receive short stories and poems and children are sent a hardback book to get them writing or drawing.

Imogen works with small independent publishers, so you are unlikely to have the book already. Message in a (Whisky) Bottle from The Mary Wallace Theatre by Rodney Figaro at the RSS When the initial Covid-19 lockdown was imposed in the Spring, we at the Mary Wallace Theatre had two productions in preparation and our Summer/ Autumn season planned. Sadly THE DUCHESS of MALFI, already in full rehearsal, had to be withdrawn, swiftly followed by the demise of SUMMERLAND which had only recently been cast. A number of subsequent productions fell like dominoes. Our annual outdoor Summer Show in the Fountain Gardens, planned to be THE IMPORTANCE of BEING EARNEST, had to be cancelled and DINNER WITH THE FAMILY, BE MY BABY, ONE MAN TWO GOV’NORS and ARDEN of FAVERSHAM followed suit.

Our proposed ambitious staging of both parts of HENRY IV for Spring 2021 was tentatively postponed until 2022. Nothing daunted and full of optimism we continued to plan live theatre productions at the Mary Wallace and, prior to the classification of Twickenham as Tier Two, had auditioned and cast WHISKY GALORE which went into virtual rehearsal in the hope that it could be staged under strict Covid regulations prior to Christmas. At that time further auditions were held and the next play, CONSENT, successfully cast….

Sadly, with the imposition of this latest lockdown, we had no choice but to withdraw WHISKY GALORE* and the viability of CONSENT, due to open in January, is uncertain. “A sad tale, sadly told….” But… ….we have not been idle during these difficult times, harnessing the black arts of ZOOM - more powerful that Prospero’s staff, more far-reaching that Oberon’s spells - to broadcast more than eighteen RSS events during the Summer and Autumn, including a variety of poetry and play readings (UNDER MILK WOOD, PRIDE and PREJUDICE) and, for Halloween, a deeply scary STAGE FRIGHT. We also brought Shakespeare to the lawns of Marble Hill House in a wellattended and socially distanced performance of excerpts in September. So you see, the Richmond Shakespeare Society is alive and kicking and, as always, welcomes all who are interested in being involved in producing or presenting drama.

Teddington RNLI Christmas Appeal

What sort of year has it been for the RNLI? Based on provisional incident reports from RNLI lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland, there was a 64% increase in the number of recreational water users aided by the RNLI. Additionally, many lifeguards reported seeing an increase in the number of visitors to beaches around the coast.

The number of people who needed help from RNLI lifeboat crews after getting into difficulties on inflatables more than doubled.

Paddleboarding saw a 40% rise in lifeboat launches and the number of casualties assisted almost tripled.

RNLI Lifeboat crew callouts to swimmers were up by 14%. Additionally, lifeboat launches to people who got into trouble whilst walking or running at the coast over the summer increased by 46%, with 175 more people aided in comparison to last year.

Gareth Morrison, RNLI’s Head of Water Safety, said: ‘Our volunteer crews have been on call throughout the pandemic. This year, they faced a summer like no other. When lockdown restrictions eased, we saw people flock to the beaches to enjoy our coastlines instead of holidaying abroad. But that resulted in a huge number of people getting into difficulty around our coasts, with our lifesavers facing an incredibly busy summer. If you find yourself in trouble at the coast this winter, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.’

As a charity, the RNLI relies on the support of the public to continue saving lives – and that support is needed now more than ever. Evelyn Hunt, a 10-yearold Cub Scout with 1st Cuddington (Warspite) Sea Scouts in Teddington successfully raised money for Teddington RNLI. As part of Evelyn’s Chief Scouts Silver Award, she decided to raise funds for Teddington RNLI Lifeboat Station by rowing from Hampton Court to Teddington Lock, and raised £144.88! We wanted to thank Evelyn and the Sea Scouts again for her fundraising efforts! A Feast of Photos: The Richmond Park 2021 Calendar

The Friends of Richmond Park’s calendar is more than just a calendar! Each month it brings the Park’s ever-changing scenery and wildlife into homes with a total of 45 excellent images. All the photos, design and production work are donated and all proceeds go towards conservation projects in the Park. You can buy the 2021 calendar online at www.frp.org.uk/shop along with Christmas cards and other unique presents.

This is the 8th year that the Friends have produced a calendar and the process starts on 1 March when we put out a call for photos through our printed newsletter, monthly email bulletin and social media. Both amateur and professional photographers, members and nonmembers respond. However, it’s not really a competition, as we need to choose photos that show a wide variety of wildlife and also complement each other, not only on each page, but overall between the months.

The photos are the result of the photographers’ dedication and deep knowledge of the Park and its wildlife. Many of them, including Bartek Olszewski, with his endearing cover image of a red deer calf swimming, make frequent visits to the Park throughout the year, often arriving before dawn.

The variety and quality of the photos is amazing. For example, the December main page is a detailed image

by Amanda Boardman of layers of frosted bracken in white, grey and sepia, framing the stag’s head. Stunning!

In complete contrast is August with its four brightly coloured insects, including this Jersey tiger moth by Diane Loch. All 45 images have the name of the subject, so it’s also slyly educational.

Our 2021 calendar also has a first — the January main image is the winner of our Winter Tree photo competition. There is so much to look at with the fabulous warm light low from the left filtering into a cool misty stream crossed by a bridge, and the willows clinging to the banks. Well done Cath Gothard!

The results of the winter and summer competitions are on our website and next year we will run the spring competition that was postponed because of Covid – keep an eye on our website and social media for information.

Turning on the Feel-Good Hormones Last month I wrote about boosting Oxytocin, the bonding hormone. This month, let’s focus on feelgood chemicals; we could all do with a bit of that.

Not enough might make you feel down, less enthusiastic about life.

In business, it helps with goals, activating hope and allowing us to dream bigger.

I often use it with clients stuck in habitual thinking.

Dopamine Praise and recognition trigger Dopamine.

Unfortunately, so does social media ‘likes’ (see my article in the April 20 edition denouncing their addictive nature and the link with self-worth).

However, Dopamine is more about the pursuit of the goal.

When the sun is out, we tend to feel good. Serotonin creates energy and optimism.

After a lovely meal with friends or family, it provides a sense of feeling ‘enough’ and safety.

As both the above are currently in short supply, what can we do to compensate?

Certainly not Cannabis, it might make you feel good, but it causes users to lack drive.

Let’s say you want to get fit but have always disliked exercise. Yet you are determined, so you join a gym and set a goal (e.g. to lose X kilos, have toned abs). If you only focus on the goal, you may soon drop out, because it’s too hard, too far away, so you give up.

To be successful, you need to reward the pursuit.

As you walk to the gym, congratulate yourself, for not lazing at home. Do this very consciously: “Hey I did it, I’m here!”. Lean into it, towards the pursuit of your goal.

Reward yourself as you work out, by listening or watching some great content.

When you want to give up because it’s getting a bit hard, tell yourself “No, this is the bit where the effort comes in (and also the reward), I’m going to push through this barrier”. It doesn’t matter if you keep going just a few extra reps or minutes, you are laying down a pathway in the brain. Pushing through becomes the reward. You are priming your brain for next time, where it will recognise ‘this is important’ and will continue with the task.

Serotonin If Dopamine is the accelerator, Serotonin is the brake. While the mental strain is the trigger for neuroplasticity (changing the brain) the actual ‘rewiring’ happens when you rest.

Councillor’s Update Significant Borough Developments What happens in other parts of the Borough does impact on all our lives. So, this update is a general sweep.

• New Covid-19 cases were dropping in the Borough at mid-November. They were 123 per 100,000 compared with the average for England of 216, • Former Stag Brewery, Mortlake. The Mayor of London’s Hearing on this major planning application was scheduled for November 26th, but has been postponed. “Further assessment and consultation on the latest proposals and mitigation should be carried out”. Indeed cannot argue with that as they must have finally realised the scale of the traffic problem.

I am pleased that residents in South Road, who have had a particularly difficult year with the opening of the new Lidl supermarket and also the Seat dealership, will be getting the admittedly small compensation of a new highway tree. • Hammersmith Bridge. The Government is going to have pay for the solution and the Task Force favours the stabilisation of the Bridge and its eventual re-opening to motorised traffic in 6+ years. Temporary people or vehicle bridges are ruled out. Richmond Council has to focus on cushioning the impact on our residents, and a ferry crossing with adequate capacity is an urgent need to meet.

• Twickenham Riverside. The modifications to plans as a result of Environment Agency views on flood management, and land assembly negotiations with Twickenham Riverside Trust (who hold the lease for the Diamond Jubilee Gardens) and the Port of London Authority (who own the Embankment) are a challenge. A period of public consultation on the developed designs is scheduled to start very soon.

Proud Sponsor Of Memorial Quilt Project “Like during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many people are looking for ways to capture their feelings and thoughts during the time of the Covid19 pandemic. They may want to pay tribute to lost loved ones, to key workers, to neighbours.

They may want to express that, for some, this was a moment where they discovered hidden wells of good humour and resilience. By creating a patchwork square, Richmond residents of all ages can express those thoughts and feelings.
