f the last year or so has taught us anything, it’s the value of community.

Who can forget the eerie silence of our streets during the first lockdown, and then the wonderful way residents and businesses adapted to the ‘new normal’ and got together to support each other?

It certainly gave us a new appreciation for reallife events, and how we’ve loved the return of life to our high streets! With this in mind we’re celebrating with a round-up of bargain buys to find if you’re on a tight budget (p20-23). We’re also welcoming the return of live music with Twickenham’s High Tide Festival and a report on the former music venue of Eel Pie Island (p8-12).

“I founded Intellectual Capital Resources (IC Resources) 22 years ago to focus on ‘deep tech’ recruitment (all the tech that’s in your phone, or a satellite, or an electric car….ie everything except IT).”

What were you hoping to achieve when making an investment with BTLH? “I make very high risk, seed stage investments in tech companies, and wanted an investment to balance my portfolio. Like all assets, property values fluctuate but the likely downside compared to stocks (or early stage companies!!) is lower.”

Why did you choose BTLH? “For me the most critical word in seeking success is ‘niche’. I loved the niche, under-represented ‘midterm let’ idea and believe that BTLH has the focus

The Tide is Turning...

Dreams of the High Tide musical festival returning for 2020 were dashed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving music fans throughout the local area incredibly disappointed.

But with ‘freedom day’ past us and an insane amount of work put in from Eel Pie Records and Discover Twickenham, hopes are high for its return this month. The last few weeks have seen a small comeback of local, live music with weekly events known as ‘High Tide Ripples’ in which local artists such as Florence Joelle and Rosie Trentham have rotated around three different locations around Twickenham High Street, performing to passers-by.

High Tide will once again be funded by local businesses and through crowdfunding. Funds are also being provided through the Welcome Back Fund, an EU initiative set up to promote 8

commercial activity and help with a safe return to the high street. High Tide will have eight stages and will showcase over 60 artists in a triumphant revival of live music.

It’ll be a welcome return to the live music scene for the area, if not quite at the levels enjoyed by Eel Pie Island in the 60s. Originally designed as a Victorian riverside hotel resort, by the mid-1950s, Eel Pie Island was evolving into one of the most important live music venues in Europe. The Island became home to the jazz beatniks, the genesis of British RnB, the hippies and the notorious psychedelic rock scene. It was here you could get to see some of the icons of

American blues: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Memphis Slim.

During the 60s, Eel Pie Island was nurturing musicians that would leave their mark on the world of music for many years to come including The Who, Elton John, David Bowie, and Rod Stewart. Stewart at the time was a young, penniless teenager who went from busking at London Tube Stations to selling over 250 million records worldwide and being featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Stewart says he was inspired when he visited Eel Pie Island with his girlfriend to see none other than The Rolling Stones in 1963. The band had a residency at the hotel the same summer their first single, Come On, was released, only eight years before the hotel mysteriously burnt down. In June 2018 (55 years later!) the band returned to Twickenham to perform to over 60,000 fans at Twickenham Stadium.

Live music has continued to be an asset to the area, with many opportunities for young and upcoming artists to perform thanks to the help of associations like The Basement Door and a rise in record shops as vinyl sales continue to grow. One of the biggest events was the High

Tide Festival of 2019, which saw performances from around 50 local artists, with headliner act Goat Girl, who had performed next to artists such as Kai Tempest at the End Of The Road festival the same summer and have just played Latitude festival this July. The festival was a huge success and described as ‘the best thing that’s happened in Twickenham in decades’.

Artists will be performing throughout Twickenham on September 26th 2021, and with some artists already confirmed, expect to see: The Desmond Dekker Band, Binker Golding, Salad, and many more. Down With The Stereotype are set to perform on the main stage and The Initiative to headline the youth stage. Both bands gave amazing performances at this year’s Battle Of The Bands, a competition set up by The Basement Door, who often work with Eel Pie Records, the organisers of this amazingly successful festival. So, get yourselves ready for a day full of (hopefully) sun, fun, and a load of live performances to celebrate a return to the wonderful world of music.

TwickTraders was originally created by Discover Twickenham BID to increase the online visibility of Twickenham’s local shops.

The concept was to create a one-stop, multiretailer platform that emulated (in a small way) the comprehensive range of products offered

by Amazon and other large online retailers.

The service is aimed at local customers who want to support local businesses and those who may be uncomfortable with the operational practices of some large online retailers.

TwickTraders has now joined forces with the

London Borough of Richmond and MyTown, a well established shopping platform offering similar services to independent retailers across the country. The investment that the Council and MyTown are making in this new partnership will result in a substantial upscaling of the range of products available to customers. MyTown is a well established, successful online platform with a fleet of e-cargo bikes and riders who will undertake all of the local deliveries.

The Arts

From the Taff to the Thames It is 21st October 1972 and I’m walking out onto the stage of the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, ready to sing to a capacity audience. My heart is thumping. Nine months earlier, my only musical experience had been standing on a chair in my local club in the rugby-mad town of Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley, belting out Tom Jones’s ‘Delilah’. So what had changed?

I came to work in London at the end of 1971 and, like most ex-pats, I looked for my fellow countrymen and found the London Welsh Rugby Club and the London Welsh Male Voice Choir.

Treorchy is famous for male voice singing and has one of the best choirs in Britain so it was only natural I found myself joining a London-based Welsh choir. Since that day in 1972, I have sung at the Royal Albert Hall on many occasions, appeared at two Royal Variety Performances and been part of the backing choir for Roxy Music, Take That, Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones.

In 2003 I combined my love of music and rugby and became one of the founders of the London Welsh Rugby Club Choir. We have appeared on radio and television and were invited to perform at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Not bad for amateur singers.

Teddington is a world away from the South Wales mining valleys but it’s now my home and has been for the past 14 years. I love looking out of my window every morning to see Teddington Lock and the woods beyond.

Being able to walk up one of the best high streets in Britain, with Bushy Park on the doorstep, is a complete joy. Lockdown has brought our community together – I have got to know my neighbours who were complete strangers to me before.

If you are thinking of joining a choir, don’t think, do it! You don’t need to be a great singer or read music, but you do need one essential quality –the ability to listen to the voices around you and blend in. If you can hear yourself then you are singing too loudly and need to tone it down.

The last 50 years have been a wonderful musical journey from my local rugby club to some of the world’s great auditoriums and sporting venues. Why not get involved in singing and see where it takes you?

A new free webinar series for parents and carers could help you.

There’s a crisis looming in teenage mental health with one in six children aged five to 16 years being identified as having issues. When teenagers struggle with their mental health, more often than not, it’s the parents, carers or schools that are first in line trying to help.

Let’s all Talk Mental Health is a free weekly online programme aimed specifically at parents and carers to support their teens, understand the issues, and find out more about routes for help.

The webinars offer insight, reassurance and resources from clinicians and advocates who work with young people, day in, day out.

“The feedback so far from both schools and parents has been incredible, with 98% of our viewers reporting they would recommend our events to friends or colleagues,” adds Laura.

“Our ambition is to spread the Let’s all Talk Mental Health online events to a nationwide audience.”

Intuitive Events is a health-focused events company, run by Laura and Jenni. It aims to help others who are experiencing similar health issues to the ones they’ve faced either personally or as parents.

Health Corner who have had lifesaving donations or donated their loved ones’ organs.

The campaign for this year’s Organ Donation Week from 20 – 26th September is ‘Leave Them Certain’ – the aim is to encourage people to talk to their loved ones about organ donation as families are always involved before the process can begin.

I have seen organ donation from several angles: as a paediatrician, talking to families of children who are dying as well as looking after children after transplants, and having friends

The English law has changed to an opt out system, so you would now be considered if you are over 18 years, not opted out and not in an excluded group. You still have the choice and can amend your decision at any time. It is an important topic to talk to families about as hundreds of transplant opportunities are missed each year because families are not sure what to do.

UK statistics show that since April 2021 1,194 people have received a transplant, while 5,821 are waiting to receive one.

Who can donate?

‘My incredible husband donated everything he had to save the lives of others…We had never spoken about organ donation but a week before his accident he had ticked every box on the form when renewing his driving license. As a result he has given a grandmother his corneas, two people received his kidneys and his liver split between a 42 year old and a 7 year old. His pancreas went to research.

His heart valves went to babies. I just want to highlight how important it is, if possible, to write a little letter to the family who have lost their loved one.’

Anyone can register to donate an organ after death, there is no age limit. A person needs to die in hospital in specific circumstances (only 1 in 100 people who die in the UK are usually able to be potential donors). There is a specialist group who decide on an individual basis on the suitability of donation at the time.

Parents can register their children as well.

Exclusions are: Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), Ebola, active cancer and HIV. If you can’t give blood, you can still potentially be an organ donor.

What can you donate?

You can have the option of donating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, small bowel, cornea and tissue. You can also be a living donor for certain organs.

‘Without the strength of my wife, the NHS and a new liver, I would not be here today. I am lost for words when I think about the angel who donated their organ. I cannot stress enough how important organ donation is being on the receiving end. Not only have I been given a second life, it has given my wife her husband, my parents their son, and my daughter her father. All I can do is pay it forward.’

There are many conditions that result in adults and children requiring new organs. These can include congenital conditions, which children are born with, or organ failure due to conditions such as infection, autoimmune disease or fibrosis.

• The business is owned and run by three brothers.

• Their father and mother started the business in 1986.

• The three brothers started in the business when they were 15 years of age. They started as Saturday boys doing cleaning, filing and making teas and coffees.

• Their heritage is a mix of Greek Cypriot from their father and a quarter German and Scottish from their mother’s side • In his spare time, one of the brothers likes to make perfumes.

• One of the brothers used to work in music management and artist campaigns. He was a video director for a few of the major UK Grime acts. He was also an A&R scout for Ministry of Sound and Atlantic Records.

• Their Business Mantra – “Have fun in your job. If you are not, then neither will your staff or your clients, it’s all a chain reaction. Don’t be scared to do something completely out the box, in fact the craziest and simplest ideas are the best. You should always take time to sit and look from an outsider. It is also wise to invest in your business and keep up to date and move with the times” • “Business wise, always have fun in your job and make it enjoyable. If you and your staff are, then your clients will too” Have you guessed who it is yet? No? • “We have toyed with the idea of moving 30

Their father was the store manager and their mother was the Head receptionist.

• Their parents were both also working in a Greek restaurant in the evening’s which is where they originally met. As well as working 2 jobs their father was also studying to be a contact lens practitioner and qualified dispensing optician.

It can only be, Nicos Antoniades and his 2 brothers Antonios and Marios, otherwise known as the 3 Brothers….Nik, Ant & Maz. Together they have a combined history in optics of over 45 years.

The Optical Gallery on King Street is their business which they took over 5 years ago from their parents. They have completely changed the business. They had always been known for being clinically excellent but clients were buying their eyewear online.

Whilst abroad in Venice he decided to visit a few opticians, and it blew him away. People wore glasses as an accessory rather than just a necessity. The frames were cool, unique and fun. No branding printed on them; these were niche brands that specialised in the art of spectacle making. “I was actually enjoying

my optical pilgrimage, and if I was enjoying it then surely my brothers, staff and clients would enjoy it too. I knew I needed to bring this back to the UK” Upon his return he told his brothers who thought it was a great idea. They were so excited that within two days they transformed the look of their store from a clinical environment to a relaxed cool interior to represent what they wanted to achieve. They wanted to be known as styling opticians. As well as knowing the best ways to correct your vision, they also knew how to help style your eyewear to match your image, personality and wardrobe in a fun easy process of an eyewear styling experience. It was essential to their new niche independent brands that we stocked as they looked like nothing in our surrounding area.

No More Family Home It’s finally happened. The day the music died.

My mum has finally sold the family home.

Out of nowhere she, quite rudely, decided to sell the property she owns and is moving elsewhere, without a care for any of the hopeless layabouts who might live there. The nice new family are moving in on the 31st of October but I have a suspicion that they may find all is not quite right with their new home come Halloween night.

It’ll play out like a classic horror. The dad insisting that this’ll be an amazing start for their family, waving away the mum’s concerns.

But as they go to sleep that night, bangs and creeks in the night won’t just be the natural noises the house makes. A sinister presence will make itself known…

So instead, Home-Alone-style, I’m going to rig up TVs set to static, apply howling ghostly laughter, and leave blood-red messages all over. I’ve watched enough Scooby Doo, I should know how to do it at this point. On that show, it’s always the meddling kids who ruin the scam but I am the meddling kid so it should go off without a hitch.

At this point, some of you might be wondering, “Wow, shouldn’t he put all this energy into finding a new place instead of terrorising a couple with a baby” and to those people I say: “Please let me stay with you…”

Combat Climate Despair This summer’s forest fires and flooding in Europe – from Germany to Greece and in Turkey - have brought climate anxiety to the fore and left many with feelings of despair.

A recent stark warning from the IPCC report makes sobering reading. Without action, it says, temperatures are expected to rise by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels within the next two decades, triggering widespread devastation and extreme weather. The report also found human activity was ‘unequivocally’ the cause of rapid changes to the climate, including sea level rises, melting of polar ice and glaciers, heatwaves, floods and droughts.

World leaders need to find a way to shift economies to a low-carbon footing as quickly as possible to slow global heating. Yet while governments need to make seismic changes, as individuals we can take action. Here are some suggestions: • Ethical banking has gone mainstream and knowing what your money is used for is one of the easiest ways to ensure you are supporting a sustainable future. Triodos and Starling Bank avoid investing in oil, arms, tobacco and mining.

Most of the main pension providers now also have ethical funds.

• Buy less, buy second hand and pass on. Reduce day-to-day consumption by thinking twice before each purchase. Do we really need the item, how far has it travelled, have the makers been paid a fair wage, is there unnecessary packaging, is the item bio-degradable? Small changes made by large numbers have a knockon effect.

• What can you do locally to support and protect the eco system in your area? Simple things like litter picking with friends along the river or planting bee-friendly wildflowers to protect and nurture the local urban environment. Finally, speak up and get involved! The more conversations about the climate emergency, be it on social media or to family and friends, the more we learn, understand and pass on.

Briar Road Allotments Community Project

A few weeks ago while visiting the Briar Road Allotments in Twickenham, I came across an inspiring community project aimed at the older and less able members who had large plots and were finding it difficult to manage them.

Most had been coming to the site for years and it was an important aspect of their social and mental well-being.

The Committee decided that an easy-tomaintain area with raised beds, suitable paths and plenty of seating would be the answer. They came up with a plan and approached Richmond Council, who not only gave permission for them to clear a vacant plot but also a small grant to help with buying materials.

This is an on-going project and every weekend volunteers work hard to prepare the site for construction. They still need more financial help so have set up a fund raising page: gofundme.com/f/building-accessiblecommunity-allotment-plots

Once finished, it is hoped the senior members will use and enjoy this new space and that their unmanaged plots will be released to those on the waiting list.

The allotments have an interesting history. The land was once owned by the famous Twining family who bequeathed it for public enjoyment about 120 years ago. In those days the site was much bigger, then stretching as far as Briar Road, hence the name. It was also a Victorian rubbish dump, and artefacts like clay pipes and pots dug up by plot holders can be seen in the Twickenham Museum.

The allotments share the site with the Twickenham Gardening Association, who are open at weekends to sell competitively priced seeds, compost, fertilizers and other essentials.

The council have given permission to use a vacant plot and volunteers have started clearing the site. The intention is to construct several raised beds and suitable paths throughout, as well as storage and seating. They are hoping to start the build part of the project shortly.

Celebrating the Double make a Premiership Final is no normal year.

The walk from The Stoop across the A316, with fans lining the streets, is almost as memorable as the game. For some, the first time they’d seen the players in over a year.

For Will & I, the rest of the day is a bit of a blur. The final ebbed and flowed right into the dying minutes.

Rugby podcasters Will and Michael Wood give us a round-up of Harlequins news…

June 26th 2021. Not a day Harlequins fans will forget in a hurry. Harlequins winning the Premiership for the first time since 2012. What made it even more amazing was the journey to the final. ‘The Miracle of Bristanbul’ – perhaps the greatest game of domestic rugby this country has ever seen. Harlequins were dead and buried at half time against the standout team in the league all season, and after 110 minutes of rugby, Harlequins had earnt their place in the final, just 0.6 miles over the road at ‘The Big Stoop’. The 500 travelling supporters at Ashton Gate that day witnessed something quite remarkable.

Memories of the 2012 final are some of the most poignant that Harlequins supporters have.

With this year’s final only having a crowd of 10,000, so many of those that went in 2012 didn’t have the chance to watch their side play in another final. Not something anyone involved with the club will take for granted.

The day was always going to be different to any other year, but a year in which Harlequins 42

Celebrating inside and outside of The Stoop with players, staff, coaches, and fans is something neither of us will ever believe actually happened. CEO Laurie Dalrymple addressed those inside the ground later that evening. He described the club as one that is connected by great people and great fans.

We now have the trophies to show for it, in both the Men’s & Women’s competitions.

Double Champions.

It’s been a strange year, but a great one too.

And with announcements of new signings, new coaches, and packed-out stadiums to return, we can’t wait to do it all again.

Halliford School’s New Woodward Building This year sees Halliford School mark our Centenary, and at the centre of our celebrations is the construction of a new building on site. We were delighted that Spelthorne Borough Council approved our ambitious plans for a new 805 sq. m teaching building this year.

The ethos of Halliford School is founded on being a smaller school where students are well known to the staff and one another and treated very much as individuals as part of our warm-hearted school community. The governing body has been keen not to expand the school but to provide our students with the best possible facilities. This new building will create a vibrant Learning Resource Centre on the ground floor and six spacious new classrooms and staff offices above.

We were keen to avoid disruption to our neighbours and therefore opted for a modular building which has the advantage that the construction process is much shorter thanks to the expertise of our construction specialists, The Darwin Group. Work commenced in May, with the delivery of 27 pre-built modules, and the building is due to be opened as the school returns from the October half-term break.

It is a source of great pride that sees Halliford name the new building in honour of our Chair of Governors, Mr Ken Woodward. Ken has served as a Governor for over twenty years and

has successfully led the school as Chairman for the last eight years.

It is incredibly exciting for us to celebrate our Centenary year this September as we hopefully all return to a more normal academic year ahead. The Woodward Building offers stateof-the-art modern facilities for our students and will provide exciting, stimulating spaces for them to work collaboratively with our new Learning Resource Centre at the heart of the school site. This September also sees the school move to a new Microsoft Surface Go 1:1 digital device strategy. The Learning Resource Centre will combine space to work both digitally and utilise our extensive library resources, and we very much look forward to welcoming members of the community to see the new development.

Our thoughts are with the family of Tony Mumford, owner of Toe-Knees Shoe Repairs on Church Street in Twickenham, who died following an e-scooter crash in July.

Tony was known for his kindness and big heart, described by one local as ‘often charging next to nothing if he thinks he can help someone less fortunate, and always ingenious with his craft work in finding solutions to difficult problems.’

His funeral, held on August 16, was preceded by a procession along Church Street – his ‘final journey’.

He will be deeply missed by everyone in this community.

High Tide Festival 2021 When Kevin from Eel Pie Records asked me if I would create a reward for the High Tide 2021 fund-raiser, I readily accepted. The badges are from my own collection and each one tells a story.

How to be Creative For TW regular Imogen Bond, it’s been a summer of communal creativity…

We often think of being creative as a solitary activity – the artist in their studio, the writer in their garret – but to me creativity is also about community. Maybe that’s because my creative background is in theatre, where it’s impossible to make anything on your own!

As a theatre director, my job was to help everyone be creative together in order to make the performance…of course it wasn’t complete until we had the audience there. Theatre is always an act of communal creativity.

Since starting Bumblebee, I’ve found different kinds of creative communities. Whenever someone subscribes to Bumblebee I send them a note welcoming them to the hive. Subscribers can share what they’ve made, inspired by the creative prompts sent with each book, and I reshare them on Instagram for other Bumblebees to see. It’s a great way to share your response to the book with other readers: in a regular book club you meet to chat – our members do the same but via their own creative writing or artwork!

A new creative community This summer I’ve been hosting an Instagram creativity challenge, and a whole new creative community has emerged. Each week I’ve shared a creative prompt – a summer-inspired word or phrase that you can respond to creatively in any way you want. The only rule is you can’t buy anything new, you have to make your creation using what you can find at home (great for your creative brain, and for the planet).

Each week dozens of creative responses have been shared: from floral creations made from blown roses and collages made from recyclable packaging, to poems, drawings, embroidery, piano compositions and even a Frida Kahloinspired pin cushion. Our Bee is just three years old…I’m not exactly sure who the oldest member of the hive is, but I imagine we’re covering a good six decades!

It’s been a really lovely way to find likeminded people who enjoy a creative challenge but it’s also been wonderful to see members of the hive cheering each other on, sharing their tips, and generally being supportive souls.

The Arts in Twickenham ‘Once upon a time and a very good time it was…’ I spent three years working on a PhD in Anglo-Irish literature (that means Irish literature written in English). During my studies on twentieth-century Northern Irish fiction I came across Kate O’Riordan’s debut novel Involved (1995), which described ‘Troubles’ Belfast in an incredibly powerful manner. I loved this atmospheric book, so it was an agreeable surprise to later be introduced to Kate socially and find out she was a close neighbour in Twickenham!

Since her first novel, Kate has published five further novels: The Boy in the Moon (1997), The Angel in the House (1997), The Memory Stones (2003), Loving Him (2005), and Penance (2016). Her TV work includes head writer for Smother (2021), Penance (2020 – an adaption of her own novel), The Bay (2019) and Mr Selfridge (2013-2016). As she lives nearby, my serendipitous meetings with Kate O’Riordan have continued over the years and I am consistently impressed by her tales of her remarkable career. What’s more, my unplanned ramblings through Twickenham, absorbing the area with no expectations, remind me of the preponderance of fascinating artists living here.

Award-Winning Artist Exhibits at Turner’s Home A new exhibition at Turner’s House charts how the river Thames and landscape painter J.M.W. Turner have helped the artist Anna Paterson through challenging times.

Anna set out to share his same view, immersing herself in the experimental techniques of his paintings of the Thames. Her works are oil or watercolours on paper, a material which she felt reflected a kind of impermanence and temporality central to Turner’s work. “He also used materials that he knew might fade and change, just like the scenes and moments that he was painting,” says Anna.

This was not the first time that Anna had felt an affinity with J.M.W. Turner. In 2014, whilst studying at the Royal Academy Schools she experienced some health issues that made it more difficult for her to paint.

“I worried that I couldn’t finish the course.

Anna, whose work has been exhibited worldwide, started painting the exhibits in a studio on the Greenwich peninsula during lockdown. As the city ground to a halt, she found the constancy of the Thames reassuring.

“I thought about how these same landscapes provided a similar grounding for Turner, a subject that he returned to throughout his life, in his use of light, colour and setting,” explains Anna.

When designing Sandycombe Lodge (now called Turner’s House) in 1813, J.M.W. Turner originally built a central tower to give him a view of the river, later becoming his bedroom.

The exhibition at Tate Britain in 2014 focused on J.M.W. Turner’s late works, made in declining physical health yet, despite this, he went on to produce some of his most confident and exciting paintings.

“I found his depiction of light and colour soothing and remember feeling strengthened by his work. I work reactively and enjoy responding to specific contexts and settings like Turner’s House,” explains Anna whose work shares with J.M.W.Turner an experimental and playful use of material. Her improvised work is

created at speed exploring combinations of colour, form, texture and light.

“Turner’s exploratory use of materials, his wildness, was radical for the time and is something that I have loved to research during my residency at Turner’s House,” she adds.

“I admire the way he seemed to refuse the society trappings of the art world. Turner built Sandycombe Lodge to escape the pressures of the London art scene. I think that you can still feel that privacy and peacefulness in the house.”

The exhibition marks the midway point of a six-month residency, sponsored by the National Lottery Heritage Fund for which Anna has also been creating workshops with Turner’s House for Age Concern and local primary schools, focusing on the playful and experimental aspects of Turner’s practice.

The new exhibits include two large mixed

media works and a set of small watercolours scattered around the house. The large oil on paper in the Small Parlour is a butterfly print which mimics both reflection on water and the Rorschach test, giving a physical and psychological narrative to the piece. The loose style and size of the watercolours are inspired

by Turner’s sketchbooks and these small snapshots of the river will be continuously replaced by new works evoking the constant yet changing presence of the Thames.

Cheers! Let’s Drink to this Rugby Charity Twickenham craft brewery Jawbone Brewing has launched a new pale ale in collaboration with former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio and his charity RugbyWorks.

Bardot is named after the houseboat Dallaglio used to moor at Swan Island, where the brewery is based. The can features artwork by local artist Ian McKillop, who has captured this corner of Twickenham riverside.

“I was very excited,” Dallaglio says of his brew day with Ben Hughes, founder of Jawbone Brewing. “The opportunity to be able to make your own beer in the place you used to live is very special. It’s hard work as well!”

Supporting the Borough’s Tourist Attractions Munira has spent a ‘staycation summer’ visiting local tourist attractions as they reopen following lockdown closures.

“This summer is an opportunity to explore everything our local community has to offer,” says Munira. “Twickenham is blessed with wonderful cultural, sporting, natural and historic attractions. There is something for everyone.”

“These sites have done fantastically well to adapt over the past 18 months including: keeping gardens and grounds open where possible, providing online talks and events and keeping volunteers, staff and communities engaged. I encourage everyone to visit and support sites across the constituency.”

Beginning with Marble Hill House and Park, Munira learnt about the £8million refurbishment project that has taken place in the grounds to reinstate them to the original 1748 splendour, when it was a retreat from court for Henrietta Howard. Situated next to the Thames, it is wonderful way to spend a few hours.

1813 and designed by Turner to be a tranquil retreat. Munira was particularly pleased to learn about the work Turner’s House Trust does with local schools and charities.

Also on the Thames, Munira spent a wonderful afternoon at Horace Walpole’s “little gothic castle”, Strawberry Hill House and Garden.

The extravagantly gothic house is filled with curious artefacts to discover. The grounds are glorious and include a community garden, which is now being prescribed for many, such as those with dementia.

Stepping further back in time, Munira had the pleasure of visiting Hampton Court Palace, formerly home of Thomas Wolsey and then famously, Henry VIII. The grounds here are also spectacular, including the oldest surviving hedge maze in Britain. There is much to explore for a daytrip, and it is a must visit.

Just down the road from Marble Hill is Turner’s House, truly a ‘hidden gem’; built in Stepping back in time at Hampton Court Palace.
