Teddington Supports Its Community Health Workers The League of Friends of Teddington Memorial Hospital has a long and proud history of supporting our local hospital and the surrounding community. Therefore at this difficult time when the NHS teams working at the hospital and other health centres are facing such a huge challenge to maintain their support to the community and deal with the impact of corona virus the League’s trustees were determined to help.

After consultation with Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust, it was decided to create an emergency fund of £17,900 to cover the cost of daily meal deliveries to staff working at Teddington Memorial Hospital and Whitton Corner Health Centre for up to eight weeks.

The meals are being prepared and delivered by Ruba Restaurant, Sidra Restaurant and The Abercorn Arms, Teddington. The scheme started on Wednesday 8th April and in the first week delivered 449 meals.

Volunteering, Community and Business Support During the COVID-19 Crisis The community response to care for others in recent weeks has been incredible. We have seen over 2,700 new volunteer registrations and local organisations have been overwhelmed by the number of applications received. The motivation to be active and useful has to be balanced with patience to ensure safe and managed formal volunteering.

Business Support Grants On March 11th, the Chancellor announced in his budget that to combat the COVID-19 crisis businesses getting either Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) or Expanded Retail Discount Relief (which covers retail, hospitality and leisure) would receive a government grant depending on which relief they were getting.

Whether you make a blood donation or donate items to a local collection point, all kinds of contributions help. We have some useful free resources with ideas and suggestions for anyone looking to offer informal support – Everybody Needs a Good Neighbour and Data Protection and Confidentiality for Community Groups and Charities are available on our website.

At the time of going to press, Richmond has processed 1,872 claims for a total of £31.590m.

As many established voluntary and community sector (VCS) groups now face a struggle to survive, some fear the real prospect of permanent closure. A donation, or creating your own fundraising activity, to support a group you care about, could make all the difference to their future.

Local group seeking donations to deliver additional PPE equipment A group of over 70 households have been putting their time at home to create PPE equipment for front line and care staff.

The group so far have made an incredible 2,000 visors and are hoping to complete an additional 5,000 this week for London hospitals and frontline workers, including over 500 allocated within Richmond.

Memories of VE Day 1945 8 May 1945. VE Day. The end of the Second World War in Europe. The war in Asia was to drag on for another three months until the surrender of Japan in August, but by 8 May, Hitler was dead and the fighting in Europe was over.

If there is one image of VE Day that lives in the public imagination, it must be that of huge crowds in front of Buckingham Palace cheering Winston Churchill and the Royal Family as they waved from the balcony. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the privilege of talking to several older Teddingtonians about their memories of VE Day, and it’s true – the majority of them did go up to London on VE Day. Teddington was well represented in those crowds.

Pam Bryant was a teenager at the end of the war.

She vividly remembers going up to Waterloo with her great friend Edna and joining the crowds heading to Buckingham Palace. ‘There were such crowds in the Mall that you couldn’t move,’ she says. ‘Everyone was happy. The

atmosphere was electric…it was a wonderful experience.’ Pam had seen plenty of the horrors of war in Teddington, where she lived with her family in St Mary’s Avenue. She had witnessed the devastation after the terrible bombing around Church Road on the night of 29 November 1940, and remembers cycling to work in Hampton Hill while air raid sirens went off around her.

Pam also has happier memories of the weekly dances at St Mary’s Church Hall, Hampton which were an excellent opportunity to dance with the American GIs stationed in Bushy Park. Pam remembers Edna and herself dancing with lots of them, although neither ended up marrying one!

June Hill’s neighbour in Clarence Road did marry the American officer who was billeted with them, and she left June some of her clothes when she moved to America. June’s mother altered them to fit, and June was very grateful because clothes were hard to come by. June was 14 at the end of the war, and she too went up to London with her father and brother on VE Day. She remembers seeing the King and Queen on the balcony, everyone cheering and waving. Somewhere else in the crowd was Penny Munkenbeck, who was ten in 1945, and remembers going with her mother from their home in Hanworth to join the celebrating crowds in front of Buckingham Palace.

June – who had been evacuated not just once but twice during the war – also recalls a street party in Clarence Road, and the enormous bonfire in the middle of the road at the junction with Avenue Gardens. Bonfires were still a common way of celebrating national events, as they had been for centuries. Many roads held VE Day street parties, as seen in this photograph of a party in Clonmel Road, Fulwell (courtesy of Val Elmes Hartnell and Chris French).

At the time of VE Day, Teddington resident Mary Green was living in Wales, where she was brought up. Living in West Wales, Mary was one of the people who didn’t travel to London, but she remembers VE Day clearly. The community in Kidwelly where she lived celebrated with a carnival, everyone dressing up in fancy dress using whatever odds and ends they could find and parading through the town. Mary remembers dressing up as a kind of Eastern vamp, with baggy trousers! Mary also remembers a poignant moment on VJ Day (Victory in Japan Day) in August when she woke up to hear the local postwoman telling her father, ‘The war is over, sir,’ after which there was a great outburst of weeping from her aunt who had lost her son in the war.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their memories with me, and I am sorry that there was not room to include them all. However, I hope that these stories will make the 75th anniversary of VE Day that much more significant for those of us living in Teddington today.

Back in London, Sheila Cooper was nine and living in Wimbledon. Sheila wasn’t taken up to London on VE Day either – possibly because her father was still away with the Royal Artillery, not returning until 1946. Sheila remembers that on VE Day everyone went up to see a travelling fair on Wimbledon Common. A local philanthropist arranged for the children to have books of free tickets so that they could go on all the rides.

(On VJ Day, they roasted a whole ox on the Common!) The other thing Sheila recalls vividly is that the buses could now have their inside lights on. ‘It looked like fairyland,’ she says.

‘You could actually see the people in the buses!’

She had been three at the outbreak of war, so she knew nothing of peacetime. She also remembers how people dug out the flags that they’d had for the coronation of George VI in 1937 because you couldn’t buy them.

Marketing Your Business Has Never Been So Important by Steve Hamilton Small business owners in Teddington truly find themselves in unusual times and operating under a different set of pressures. The current lockdown measures have reduced the ability for bricks and mortar businesses to gain revenues.

So, where does a business go to capture audience eyeballs?

According to Comscore, a leading worldwide traffic auditing company, consumers are heavily moving to online sources, with online gaming, fitness, short video, in-home dining, cooking, online reading, social media and music all showing significant consumption rises.

This rise is all online. There always seems to be an air of excitement when the first British asparagus comes into season. I believe it’s the sign that Spring is upon us. Adopted from my girlfriend I now have a new tradition, it’s to pop open a bottle of bubbles on the day the Spring clock changes, why not!

So we all know how great British asparagus is but have you heard about Tropea onions?

Known by the locals in Calabria, Italy as “La Regina Rossa - The Red Queen”, Tropea onions are up there as the sweetest and most delicious onions in the world. A good Tropea onion is naturally far sweeter than your average red onion, less harsh and pungent - so delicious it’s possible to eat like an apple.

Fresh Piattelle beans come into season in June, so you will have to wait for these, in the meantime, dried beans will do just fine. There is a difference in the cooking, you will need to pre-soak the dried variety in cool water overnight to rehydrate them. Fresh Piattelle as most beans can go straight to a cold boil.

1 x Celery bunch – retain the inner sweet yellow leaves

Makes 4

24 Spears x English ½ x Bulb of garlic – cut in half asparagus 3 x Sprigs of sage

2 x Small Tropea onions

250g x Fresh or dried 1 x Lemon Piattelle beans (cannellini Extra virgin olive oil make a great substitute) Salt & pepper 2 x Vine tomatoes

1 x Celery bunch – retain the inner sweet yellow leaves Method 3 x Sprigs of sage

• If you are using dried beans soak them in cold water for 8 to 10 hours. After rehydration, place into fresh cold water to more than cover the beans, add celery stalks, garlic, sage sprigs and a good glug of olive oil, then bring to the boil. Simmer until tender. Once cooked, remove from heat and add the salt. We add the salt after simmering so the beans don’t break up during cooking. Allow the beans to cool down slowly in their own cooking liquor.

• Peel the asparagus from just under the spear head, then remove the woody end of the asparagus stalk by snapping it, it’s normally about an inch from the base. Cook them in plenty of rapid boiling salted water for 2 to 3 minutes and refresh in ice water to stop any further cooking.

This will also help retain their nutrients and colour.

½ x Bulb of garlic – cut in half 2 x Small Tropea onions 2 x Vine tomatoes 1 x Lemon

Extra virgin olive oil Salt & pepper

• Blanch the tomatoes in rapid boiling water for 10 seconds, then refresh in ice

water. Peel off the skins with a paring knife, cut into quarters and remove the seeds, then chop into concassé (1cm diamonds).

• Once cool, strain the beans into a mixing bowl and discard the celery, sage and garlic. Peel and chop the onions into a fine dice and add to the beans with olive oil, seasoning, tomato concassé, celery leaves, lemon juice and zest.

• Season the asparagus,

plate up and enjoy.

Learning to Learn Differently During an assembly just a few weeks ago, I tried to highlight some of the issues that might be a threat, both now and in the future. There were some international leaders of dubious repute on the PowerPoint slide, a nuclear explosion, the wildfires in Australia and a picture of the coronavirus. I think I said at the time that I wasn’t sure how much of a threat the virus might become – but I am now.

We would normally have been back at school this week for the start of the summer term, with the run up to public examinations and preparation for school tests, and then some of best parts of the school year such as sports day, activities week and charity fundraising events. Even if there is some sort of return to school before the summer, it will not be anything like it would otherwise have been.

We find ourselves instead offering remote learning, with work being set and feedback provided via computer without the usual opportunities for the human interactions that are such a key part of an effective educational experience. There has been talk in the world of education recently about how remote learning will make teachers obsolete and render schools unnecessary. I think it took most of us less than 24 hours to realise what a load of nonsense that turns out to be!

Everyone has been on a steep learning curve – staff, pupils and parents – but it has been hugely uplifting to see the speed with which the new reality has been embraced, with exciting initiatives being devised and shared across the school community. Parents have told me already about the resilience their children are having to develop, the learning by trial and error, and the independence it promotes, thereby highlighting how Radnor House’s approach is offering our pupils the chance to learn skills now that they might not otherwise have been able to master until they were much older, skills that serve everyone well and help provide a silver lining to the current dark cloud.

The answer, of course, lies in a balance between social and remote, between people and machines.

It is already clear that we need to dial down the formal tasks and dial up the opportunities for collaboration and interaction, however remote.

After all, it is cooperation that will get us through this crisis, and Benjamin Disraeli was right when he said that there is no education like adversity.

Better Habits During Lockdown 3. When working with children, routines are essential. A friend of mine mirrors the school timetable, and even rings a bell to signal lunchtime!

How are your new lockdown routines? Are they working for everyone (children, parents, work)? What about yourself?

In times of crisis, we tend to look after others first.

If we forget to nurture ourself, we risk impacting everyone around us. With everyone stuck in the same house, privacy is much harder to preserve.

Some parents, in particular, may feel guilty for wanting to take time out for themselves. It is not selfishness; it’s essential; you must actively take care of your holistic well-being.

Here are some suggestions: 1. Have some ‘me’ time every day. At least 30 minutes (preferably twice a day) in a room, garden or better still out walking (as part of your exercise). If your favourite place is shared, have a booking system. For example, each morning is available for household member to have their allotted time, to do whatever they fancy (reading, watching a film, etc.). I cannot emphasise strongly enough how important it is to take care of your mind.

2. If you can listen to meditative music or hypnosis, do deep, slow breathing. Anything that calms the nervous system (no, not wine) will help the ‘whole’ of you to cope better. Stress will reduce, or rather, your response to it will, and you will feel in control.

4. When you sit down for a meal together, or before doing schoolwork, whatever the task, take a couple of deep belly breaths, making sure the exhalation is slightly longer than the inhalation. It will help the body to be grounded and calm, and the brain to dissipate scattered thoughts so that you can focus on the task.

5. Some people have a meal in silence, not even eye contact, it’s a Buddhist practice and having done it, I highly recommend it. Becoming aware of our internal chatter can be very insightful. It also teaches kids (depending on age) to take more control of their inner thoughts and feelings, to ‘notice’ what’s going on, and not be ‘run’ by it. I teach this when I do Mindfulness courses; it’s a great habit to develop. The more you practice, the calmer and more in control you feel, which then starts affecting others, who can’t help but respond to that calm energy. Do it for yourself, and be a great role model for others in your house.

Home Is Where the Art Is I was delighted to see that my painting of Bushy Park made it to the cover of the March edition of the TW11 magazine, for a feature on the forthcoming exhibition of the Twickenham Art Circle. Alas, the exhibition was not to be and, for now, home is where the art is.

I’m not fainthearted though; my Monday Painting Masterclass at Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College took place, streaming live and with most of our participants present, by way of the Team Meeting app. We painted, we discussed and we critiqued each other’s work. Most of us have now signed up for the summer term.

I am a keen Urban Sketcher too. Urban Sketching is a world-wide observational sketching phenomenon and I am linked to the London and New York groups. The London group is featuring a 30-day challenge. Each day we sketch a pre-agreed topic and post it online.

I’ve been Urban Sketching for some years, and about 50 of us usually turn up at each of the monthly events,

but in the last week I have learned more about the other people than I ever knew. Now that we are drawing indoors, I can see people’s homes, their interests, their work and their quirky take on the strange new normal we are all experiencing. I’m now reaching the end of the challenge, on day 28. Quite a concertina! I can see the next batch stretching ahead indefinitely but know that it will eventually come to an end, leaving the memories and the odd little drawings to remind me of the moments that were so intense at the time.

They say that after the crisis things will never be the same and I suspect that this will be a habit I’ll find it hard to break.

Once we set foot into the real world again we’ll greet each other like the familiars we never were before.

Councillor’s Update Council Committees Go Virtual In the Environment Department we are responding to the Coronavirus emergency as best we can, maintaining the waste and recycling service (while suspending the Green waste service and bulky collections and closing Townmead), keeping open our parks (while closing libraries, sports centres and pools) and continuing to process planning applications. Levels of household waste have been in excess of Christmas levels – if the refuse lorry is full before the round is complete we have a problem so please be sparing.

The Government has issued regulations on Council business that requires Committee approval. At the time of writing we were planning for our first virtual Planning Committee in late April including public input. The regulations expire in May 2021 but we must hope for a return to something like normality much before then.

Kneller Hall SPD One of the longer term projects that was near completion when the Coronavirus crisis struck was the supplementary planning document to guide the Ministry of Defence in establishing future use of Kneller Hall when the Royal Army School of Music moves out. Public consultation had been completed and it only remained to produce the final document which can be found on: https://www.richmond.gov.uk/media/18898/ kneller_hall_supplementary_planning_document. pdf As the plan shows, the site has been looked at in four sections, (1) Kneller Hall itself, a Grade II listed building dating from 1848, and its context, (2) the army housing to the west, (3) the Metropolitan Open Land and (4) a Habitat Corridor at the rear of the other three sections.

There is a comprehensive Tree Preservation Order protecting all the important trees on the whole site.

Kneller Hall would be thoroughly repaired and refurbished. The original main entrance on the

south façade would be reopened. Possible new uses would include residential, a small hotel and employment and/or community uses. The chapel would remain publicly accessible.

The existing army housing on the west of the site would be demolished and replaced by a mix of housing including 50% affordable. Two areas with a concentration of mature trees would remain free of development. A dense development of the area shown on the map as “Kneller Residential Community” is envisaged with height increasing from 2 to 3 storeys on the west and south periphery to up to 5 storeys towards the centre of the site but subservient to Kneller Hall itself.

On the Metropolitan Open Land a new publicly accessible park, Kneller Park, would be created with a range of possible open space uses.

Last Month in the Garden Lathyrus vernus (Spring vetchling) is a short herbaceous plant with purple flowers fading to greenish-blue. There is also a pink variant. A native of European forests and dies down and disappears by midsummer. Good for bees and modestly spreads by seed.
