History Focus - Frances, Lady Waldegrave (1821-1879) Frances Elizabeth Anne Braham was born on 4th January 1821. Her father was the German Jewish tenor, John Braham, who performed on all of the main theatres and opera houses of Europe and America. Although of very comfortable means, Braham was tied into building St James’s Theatre in London and this was proving to be a drain on his finances.

As a result of her father’s theatrical connections, Frances, along with her mother and father was invited to a dinner party at Strawberry Hill in the summer of 1838. Strawberry Hill House was then in the occupation of the 6th Earl Waldegrave, John James Henry, and his family. By all accounts, Frances was a strikingly beautiful young lady and as this was her first visit to Strawberry Hill, she set out to explore the house. Whilst doing so, she was observed by the Earl’s two sons, John James and George who both fell in love with her on the spot and set about finding out who she was. John had declared his love for her before the night was over.

Frances and John then started to spend a good deal of time together, despite objections from her mother as Frances saw the opportunity to leave the family nest. John is described as “extremely good looking but uncouth – and illegitimate,” the 6th Earl and his fiancée having jumped the gun. However, Frances was not interested in the family fortune which had passed to John’s brother George who became 7th Earl. Frances and John were married on 25th May 1839.

At George’s insistence, they both stayed for long periods at Strawberry Hill and were told to treat the House as their own. Both brothers were thoroughly dissolute and Frances applied a very motherly care to them. John was an epileptic and his fits grew progressively worse until he failed to recognise her.

He died within a year of being married. Frances retired to friends and family in London.

Meanwhile George drew himself into the Waterford set, a circle of friends of dubious repute whose only interests seemed to be in drinking and gambling.

During Derby week 1840, George and three friends went to Kingston Fair “which outdid Greenwich for riotousness.” On the way back to Twickenham after midnight, one of the party decided “to knock up a woman who kept a mangle” in Hampton Wick.

We are told that door knockers had an irresistible fascination for Lord Waterford and an unholy racket was being created in the early hours of the morning. When PC Charles Wheatley tried to quieten them, a scuffle took place outside the Swan Inn and the policeman was badly knocked about.

The miscreants all succeeded in getting away but a hat was left at the scene. From this George and a Captain Duff were traced and arrested but they refused to divulge the names of the other two. It was noticeable that Lord Waterford left by sea for his castle in Northumberland the following day.

Out on bail, George went to see Frances and express his profound love for her. He declared that he had found a way around the Marriage Act of 1835 which prevented a man from marrying the spouse of his deceased brother and he proposed to her immediately.

Taken completely by surprise, Frances accepted and they were married in Edinburgh on 28th September 1840. The infamous Captain Duff was best man at the wedding – and the worse for drink !

George, Lord Waldegrave and Captain Duff appeared at the Queen’s Bench on 3rd May 1841and pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to six months imprisonment in Newgate and fined £200 and £20 respectively. Showing an amazing degree of loyalty, Frances insisted on joining her husband in jail for the period of his sentence.

Despite being imprisoned, “they led a very social life and hosted many dinner parties.” However all through this period their financial problems were mounting; the estates were not being properly managed and some were not even paying for Cont. Page 8

themselves. This growing stress caused Frances to miscarry and sadly her condition was such that she would never have children.

When they left Newgate, Waldegrave had been used to drinking excessively and was given to bouts of bad temper. Whilst thinking about satisfying their creditors, he hit on the idea of selling Walpole’s lifelong collection of treasures. Thus the Great Sale of 1842 commenced and for 32 days Walpole’s works were disposed of to the far corners of the United Kingdom. Whilst the sale was underway, Frances and George slipped away to the Continent and to ensure their married status, they took out Prussian citizenship and went through another marriage service on 4th June 1844.

On returning to England, they went to their Somerset home, Strawberry Hill having been stripped of its furniture and furnishings, where Frances wanted to live quietly with her husband.

George however wanted to show off his Countess to “the London Season” and began a round of socialising which went neatly with his excessive drinking. He was taken ill in February 1845 and Frances insisted on nursing him herself. A brief relapse was followed by a mighty new bout of illness. Family friend Dr Cutler declared that George had cirrhosis of the liver and that time was short. George died on 28th September 1846.

Frances, now Countess Waldegrave, twice widowed and only twenty five found herself extremely wealthy but entirely alone. At this point in time she re-met an old friend of her father’s, George Granville Harcourt, a widower of 61 and son of the Archbishop of York. Harcourt was clearly smitten, despite the 36 year age gap and pressed his troth.

Although Frances wanted to endure a year of widowhood to consider her future, she succumbed to his intentions and they were married by special licence on 30th September 1847.

Under Harcourt’s careful guidance, Frances was introduced to the British political scene. Operating from Harcourt’s family home of Nuneham, Frances gradually set out to make her mark on society, despite some remarks of an unsupporting nature from Harcourt himself. However Frances blossomed as a hostess and caught the eye of Liberal hopeful, Chichester Fortescue, an old friend of Harcourt’s. As Harcourt’s influence waned, Frances set about restoring Strawberry Hill which had remained empty since the Great Sale. A huge amount of money was expended on the project and by the time Harcourt died in 1861, Strawberry Hill was the epicentre of Liberal politics in the country.

Chichester Fortescue

regular visitors to Strawberry Hill and an invitation there was the most coveted prize of the season. Fortescue wasted no time in proposing to Frances by way of a 13 page letter. He had a rival in the Duke of Newcastle and was anxious to see him off. Frances wanted to allow a respectable year of mourning to pass and so became secretly engaged to Fortescue. They

married on 20th January 1863.

The social and political whirl of the 1863 – 1866 culminated with Fortescue, now a Privy Councillor, being appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland and moving out to Dublin with Frances. On the occasion of a visit to the theatre, a wag from the audience shouted “And would your ladyship be after informing us, which of your four husbands do ye like the best ?”

With an exquisite and inimitable turn of her head, she looked at the questioner and, without a moment’s hesitation, her clear, lovely voice flashed back: “The Irishman, of course.”

This brought the house down and overnight Frances was the Queen of Dublin.

At last, with a husband of her own age, Frances enjoyed many happy years with Fortescue until she was struck down “with rheumatic pains in my chest, arms and back” and she died in the arms of Fortescue on 5th July 1879.

New Mayor When the new Mayor was selected, little did he know what was around the corner and how all initial plans would have to be changed!

With cancellation of all summer events there are no official engagements until probably September when it is hoped to be able to hold the traditional Mayor’s Dinner and Civic Service.

Recent times have of course been very challenging for our residents and businesses and the Mayor has been working with Members and Officers continuing to support these. This year the Council has declared a climate change emergency and the Mayor has decided to raise awareness of all aspects of this and make it his main theme for the Mayoral year. The chosen charities SWLEN and Dose of Nature will help do this focussing on impact of climate change and biodiversity loss helping residents and businesses take practical and realistic steps to make a positive difference.

The COVID-19 emergency has of course had a huge impact on our lives and our businesses and one of the main tasks ahead will be to help the Borough recover and return life to some form of normality. Our town centres, how we work and shop will all change and The Mayor wants to be a big part of managing this. The importance of nature and the outside world is something many of us previously took for granted so the Mayor sees continuing to raise environmental awareness as a major part of the recovery.

As soon as we can, the Mayor and his very capable Deputy, Councillor Julia Cambridge, will be out across the Borough supporting residents with events, fairs, openings, school activities and many other community initiatives. Although the high street may look somewhat different, there will be shops and businesses reopening and we will all need to support them after the difficult times 10 | To advertise please call Christiane on 07974 500895

we have all had so the Mayor wants to be at the forefront of getting morale up and people back on their feet. Shop Local is going to be a strong message!

So for the rest of 2020/21 the Mayor aims to be at the centre of rebuilding our fantastic Borough, not just the larger centres like Richmond and Twickenham but all our other areas as well. We have fabulous parks and green spaces and we need to continue celebrating these but always having a keen eye on protecting the environment and keeping people aware and safe.

The Mayor is very much looking forward to getting out there and meeting as many people as possible and rediscovering all the amazing charity groups, volunteers and organisations we have in the Borough. At the turn of the year few of us could have predicted how quickly the way in which we live, work, socialise and engage with our local environment would change so dramatically. As many sought to access greenspace and nature on their doorstep to counteract the effect of lockdownmeasures the importance and impact of safe, accessible and well-connected parks and greenspaces on people’s health and wellbeing has never been more recognised or acknowledged.

As the panic, fear and confusion of the initial stages of the pandemic subsides and we start to look ahead to what is being dubbed as ‘the new normal’ we realise that the rulebook has been torn up. The ‘new normal’ doesn’t just have to be a reformatting of what has happened before, but can be an ambitious, bold and co-created vision for our built and natural environment which has greater positive outcomes for people, wildlife, nature and place.

Being named one of the Mayor of Richmond’s charity partners for 2020/21 is a huge honour and we look forward to using this platform to help make more things happen for more communities across the borough going forward - especially as we embark upon an ambitious merger with fellow Richmond based nature conservation and heritage preservation charity Environment Trust.

Dose of Nature is a mental health charity established to support people with a range of mental health issues by increasing their engagement with the natural world.

With approximately one in four of us experiencing a mental health problem each year, wouldn’t it be fantastic if there were a treatment or pill that was effective, free, had no waiting lists or side effects, and had an immediate impact that lasted forever?

Well, it turns out there is, and what’s more it can be accessed simply by opening the backdoor or looking out of the window: ‘Nature’ is back in fashion!

During the very unnatural experience of lockdown, we’ve been so grateful for our gardens and balconies, and have sympathised with those without either; and we’ve been doing things we’ve never done before: growing vegetables, watching nature programmes, going for walks with our partners or children. Why? Because engaging with nature makes us feel better. There is now a wealth of scientific evidence to support the view that spending time outside in nature is good for us.

When we are in nature our bodies and brains thrive, a fact that is hardly surprising when we consider that our species evolved over millions of years in natural environments.

We offer an individual ten-week ‘nature prescription’ which combines education, guided activities and practical support led by a trained Dose of Nature Guide. We are of course blessed in our Richmond Borough with some of the capital’s most beautiful parks and gardens, but we also encourage people to discover the small hidden gems of nature near to them – a favourite tree, a churchyard or cemetery, or a little patch of green at the end of the road.

So, what exactly is happening when we engage with nature? Well, first of all there are immediate physiological effects: our blood pressure, heart rate and cortisol levels all decrease, indicating reductions in stress. Amaretti Biscuits

It can be bittersweet to be gluten free.

Amaretti are probably Italy’s most famous biscuits, slightly crunchy on the outside, perfectly chewy and gooey inside.

At the restaurant our Amaretti Biscuits are extremely popular - we often can’t make enough before selling out each day. One of the great things about this recipe is that it doesn’t call for any flour, a real treat for anyone suffering from coeliac disease and craving a tasty biscuit with a gooey nutty centre.

Originally, there were two authentic and traditional versions of Amaretti: Amaretti di Saronno Lombardy and Amaretti di Sassello - Liguria.

The first, Amaretti di Saronno, usually remains crispy and dry and is often used as an ingredient in

Italian dessert recipes or simply crushed over icecream. The second, Amaretti di Sassello, is the method we use at Shambles to achieve the gooey and yummy nutty centre.

Apricot kernels can sometimes be tricky to get hold of, you can replace them with a bitter almond extract or you might find

the kernels online, otherwise you can pop into the restaurant and grab some from us, trust me, the kernels make all the difference!

Makes 25-30 biscuits

Ingredients 150g x Blanched almonds 25g x Toasted hazelnuts 75g x Bitter apricot kernels 120g x Egg whites 500g x Caster sugar Icing sugar for dusting

Method 1.

Blend the nuts and apricot kernels finely in a food processor.

Add the sugar and continue to blend.

Slowly add the egg whites whilst blending the mixture, it will start to form a ball inside the processor.

Continue to blend, until the ball has broken down and you’re left with a smooth dough.

Spoon the mixture into a piping bag and line your baking tray with grease proof paper.

Pipe the mixture into rounds and space them out well (they will double in size once baked).

Dust liberally with icing sugar to fully coat.

8.

Leave in a cool dry place for 12 hours so that the mixture can dry out.

9.

After this time, they will have formed a thin dry skin.

10. Pinch the biscuits lightly with your fingers to give a knobbly appearance.

11. Pre heat the oven to 180’c and cook for 11 minutes or until lightly golden.

12. Allow to cool for 15 minutes before tucking in.

TW Sews Scrubs by Catherine Dolan Responding to the widely publicised shortage of scrubs and other PPE in the NHS and care sector, TW Sews Scrubs sprang to life in April.

Within a couple of days, they had a WhatsApp group with 30 members, a listing on the Scrub Hub website, a Go Fund Me page and orders were pouring in.

The list of volunteer sewers, fabric cutters and general helpers quickly increased to over 80 people, with an amazingly impressive cottage industry forming despite complications of social distancing, fabric shortages and the unpredictability of orders and sizes needed!

Neighbours were enlisted to wash and iron fabric donations, family members called on to make deliveries and try on scrubs for size and the WhatsApp group was awash with sewing and cutting tips.

After call-outs for fabric and help via NextDoor and the newsletter of Handmade Workshops, coordinator Catherine Dolan was overwhelmed by the emails and texts pouring in from people offering everything from sewing to fabric donations and help with deliveries. “In such a time of uncertainty,

I think it really helped us all to feel that at last we might be doing something useful and positive”, she says.

To date, the group have supplied at least 300 sets of scrubs and 80 gowns to local hospitals and care homes, as well as GPs, community nurses and charities. Using a mixture of repurposed bedding and new material bought using money donated, scrubs have ranged from traditional blue through to flamingo and leopard print – with everything in between!

The group comes from an incredibly broad range of backgrounds, including a dentist, engineer and accountant, as well as people more used to sewing theatrical costumes and wedding dresses, but quickly formed into a great team. “I’m really proud to be part of TW Scrubs and, despite most people not knowing each other before, of how willing they have been to help each other,” says Denise Lloyd.

Though born out of a terrible crisis, lasting friendships have certainly been formed and community spirit proven to be alive and kicking.

It’ll be wonderful, too, when social distancing is in the past and the group can all meet for the wellearned ‘after party’!

Teddington Dance Studio in Lockdown by Natalie Randhawa so when it comes to a dance class, but the girls and boys have danced their Ballet, Tap, Modern and Jazz classes wherever possible, from in the kitchen to inside the garden shed!

We are now half way through 2020, and what a year it has been thus far. Sometimes I feel as if I live in two different worlds. It is all too easy in the Covid-19 world to become despondent when the future seems so uncertain, and lockdown endless. Once in the park however, any heaviness of spirits lifts - I am transported into a place of beauty and serenity where Mother Nature’s time table for her events is unaffected by the turmoil of the world outside. This is so reassuring. I wish everyone could be as blessed as I am. Hopefully my photos will lift your spirits.

Teddington Society Gives Gear to Lifeboat Crew by Sheena Harold

Ann Sayer, who died in April, was a long time member of the Teddington Society and for nearly 20 years the Leader of our Riverside Group. An extraordinary athlete, she was a champion rower and an award winning long distance walker as well as a geologist, an environmentalist and usually the first to volunteer to help with anything to do with Teddington which she loved.

Looking for a way to commemorate her, what better than to respond to a request from the Teddington RNLI who approached us for funds.

The Lifeboat always turns out for us, whether at the Village Fair or the Christmas Lights, so we opted to donate nearly a thousand pounds to buy them 10 Hi Viz Jackets suitable for their new lady recruits as their current ones are too large.

Following the unexpected death of my husband, the Fabric House coming up for sale was a lifeline, and it gave me the opportunity to find a new focus for my life. I was already working part-time for the existing owner, and looking back, I do feel a sense of being in the right place at the right time.

The business was originally a franchise, but as an independent, I was able to take the opportunity to expand the range of suppliers and update the stock available, both fabric and accessories, adding ribbons, trimmings, and poles, to enhance the finished product.

A new business requires an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of staff. The team has changed over the many years of the business, with some who have been here from the beginning and others who have found their feet and gone on to develop their own careers in the industry. They have all been united in their enthusiasm and commitment to the business, and their knowledge and customer support have proved invaluable.

Over the last 20+ years, we have seen the expansion of customer needs, from the updating of individual rooms, especially in the run up to Christmas, to the redevelopment of whole houses, with specific design requirements. Growth in the interior design market has enabled the development of relationships with other symbiotic businesses. This has given us the benefit of seeing a project all the way through to its conclusion.

So, it is with immense regret that, with increasing age and failing health, I have come to the decision to withdraw from the market place, and hang up my scissors and tape measure.

Hampton Wick Rocks by Karen Tyler What started out as a bit of fun among nursery friends and their families has now swept across a whole community.

A wonderful way of bringing fun and surprise into the kids’ daily walks, fostering community spirit and thanking the NHS - all while allowing those creative juices to flow. That’s the idea behind Hampton Wick Rocks.

The idea is simple:

Managing Stress & Anxiety During Uncertain Times by Aisling Vlasto Managing stress and anxiety during uncertain times.

These are uncharted territories, with unanswerable questions confronting us all. It would be understandable to lose yourself in an endless ocean of worrying thoughts.

Perhaps you’ve noticed your stress levels rising as the weeks roll by, with feelings of anxiety creeping in.

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, be it mild or severe. It is usually a reaction to an imagined future threat. Physical symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, a feeling of knots in your stomach, and shallow, rapid breathing. Emotional responses to anxiety can include feelings of dread, repetitive negative thoughts and a heightened awareness. It can also have a negative impact on sleep. If symptoms are severe, a visit to the GP may be necessary but waiting times for referrals can be lengthy. For immediate relief from physical and emotional symptoms, here are four simple methods to try at home.

This ‘emergency toolkit’ is based on scientific research and when practiced regularly can have a positive, long term effect on stabilising your emotions.

1.

Coherent Breathing: A practice of slowing the rate of respiration to 5-6 breaths per minute. Practice for 20 minutes per day, sitting comfortably or lying down with your eyes closed. You may need to build up to these slower breaths gradually. Begin by inhaling for 4 seconds then exhaling for 4 seconds. If this feels comfortable then try for 5 seconds, eventually building up to 6 seconds for each inhale and exhale.

Counting the seconds up on the inhale and back down on the exhale keeps you focused

whilst occupying the mind from chaotic thoughts. When practiced daily this exercise can provide emotional resiliency. If the anxiety is severe, practice in the morning and again at bedtime.

2. 5-4-3-2-1 Bringing your awareness the present moment: Look around you and acknowledge 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, one thing you can taste. Practice this activity whenever you notice yourself feeling worried or overwhelmed.

3. Mindful walking: Head outside for a walk, into nature if possible. Move slowly, feeling the ground beneath your feet with each step.

Breathe slowly and deeply, listening to the sounds of your inhales and exhales. Become aware of the sound of your footsteps or the birds singing. Try not to let your thoughts take over, focus on your surroundings and stay aware of your breath until you feel calmer.

4.

If you are suffering from hyper-arousal then some strong exercise or movement can offer relief, if appropriate. A yoga sequence can be useful here if you are housebound with small children for example. Follow with a 10-20 minute period of rest or guided relaxation. Yoga sequences and guided relaxations are often free to access on Youtube or Instagram. Always choose a sequence suitable to your age and ability.

Praying in Teddington It has been a tough few months. Research by Teddington based charity Tearfund showed that in May 2020 a third of young adults had watched or listen to an online service or a religious broadcast.

Get to Know Your Neighbour Who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by people who use their hands, tradesmen like tilers and potters. My late Grandad Tom was a carpenter/decorator and he used to make us toys - like wooden stilts and a ping pong table! I think that’s very clever.

What lessons have you learned?

We spent a lot of time at Great Ormond Street Hospital with one of my children. This period was a shock which stopped me in my tracks. I realised I’d been gliding through life unchallenged. It humbled me as a person and made me eternally grateful to our NHS staff.

Nadia Day is an Impressionist landscape artist based in Teddington.

She paints views of nature, predominantly Bushy Park, plus commissions from further afield. Her bespoke offering is to include silhouettes of family members within a client’s perfect view.

What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?

The atmosphere of the great outdoors motivates me to paint, so a school run involving a cycle or jog through Bushy Park ensures an energised painting session later.

Direct. I can’t help but be honest - which is usually funny but occasionally troublesome.

What is your favourite place locally?

I used to work in Advertising but during maternity leave, when I could finally pause and reconsider career choices, I realised I should follow my passion to paint landscapes. The appetite I had for it amazed me – I’d clearly been a frustrated creative for years!

What’s your favourite part of the day?

Enjoying a boiling bath at the end of a day with my nose in a book.

Why We Need to Escape

With summer here and travel restrictions still in force, should we still be booking time off? Doing the same thing day in and day out is wearing, and can also lead to burnout or low mood.

Holidays are essential for both mental and physical well-being. Having something to look forward to energises us; it excites us.

We crave new things and 'rewards'. During the lockdown, there have been many forms of escapism; chocolate, alcohol, cakes, NetFlix, etc.

On the healthier side, exercise that some may never have done before, walking/running visiting places they've never ventured to in the past. The brain and body seek pleasure and new things. Stimulation is so crucial for our well-being holistically.

Official Holidays When we have a day off, let's say a bank holiday, it is important to see it as a bit special. Doing something that you wouldn't normally do, it's a physical and emotional break from the daily grind.

After a day off, we are generally more productive, more focused and energised. We feel as if we deserved our break and got our 'reward'.

There are obvious things you can do right now in lockdown; get your local map, look at places you may never have known about, that are practically on your doorstep. Do something virtual, that you've never done before, yoga, salsa dancing, juggling, anything! Interestingly when the brain is bored and not always fed by social media, that's when it can get more creative and by doing so, feel more purposeful and engaged.

Because the longer we focus on a positive thought/ image, the more it 'sticks' and if done regularly, we feel better (unfortunately it 'sticks' if it's negative too).

While you are experiencing your 'holiday', you are both relaxing and stimulating your brain. The great thing is – you don't even have to pack your cases!!

Imagine Escapism is excellent both physically and mentally. It is only harmful if it's something you are consistently not dealing with. You may be 'escaping' by using substances or habits that may affect your mental or physical well being.

However, when you use your imagination for your good (remember, Einstein, said "imagination is more powerful than knowledge"), you feel uplifted.

Thinking of seeing your best friend and hugging her, or imagining that great holiday you want.

We all know how the delightful anticipation of thinking of the next holiday. That's already an upgrade in thought and feeling, then imagining what you might do there, the scenery, etc. Doing this kind of escapism is excellent stuff. Why?

Normal People and Fleabag’s Hot Priest Support Landmark’s Funding Appeal

A touch of TV magic arrived at Teddington’s Landmark Arts Centre last month when the two leading stars of Normal People and Fleabag’s Hot Priest spent a day filming a special sketch for the Irish version of the BBC’s Comic Relief, which aired on RTÉ at the end of June.

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal reprised their Normal People roles as Marianne and Connell with Andrew Scott’s Hot Priest from Fleabag, to record the sketch in top secret for the TV fundraising show.

Martin Nicholds, Chair of Trustees said: “The Landmark has been dormant since March, because of our enforced closure due to COVID, so it was fantastic to fire it up at again for this special filming with the stars of TV’s two hottest productions. The building really came into its own as the sketch was based around a confessional in a church.”

The filming was a closely guarded secret to avoid any spoilers before it was aired on Comic Relief. The sketch was filmed under pretty tricky circumstances with everyone having to observe social distancing rules throughout.

Martin Nicholds commented: “The film crew heard about The Landmark’s emergency fundraising appeal on social media so they were keen to help, especially as the building totally ticked the box as a location for the shoot.”

“Cast and crew were a delight; Daisy, Paul and Andrew had great empathy for our current plight and offered their support by posing for photos. They also signed an original print by local artist, Jenny Ing, which we will raffle online for our fundraising. Look out on our social media for news on that.”

The Landmark launched an emergency fundraising appeal in April as its enforced closure, due to the COVID-19

outbreak, meant that it faced permanent closure by mid-May. A massive fundraising effort has raised over £50,000, including £2,700 raised in a day by local organisation, Teddington Together, who staged, Rockin The Lockin, when 25 local talented musicians gave up their time to play a 12-hour live-streamed virtual music marathon.

Donations received so far ensures the centre’s survival until November but without knowing when the doors can be reopened again, the fundraising needs to continue.

Meanwhile, the centre has been running virtual classes and hopes to have socially distanced classes in the building this summer. Other virtual events planned in July include a live streaming of comedian Mark Thomas’ award winning show, Serious Organised Criminal, on 9 July and a virtual quiz on 8 July (to register visit landmarkartscentre.org).

14th June was World Blood Donor Day, but what is it all about? It is a day marked in calendars worldwide to raise awareness of the need for safe collection and use of blood and blood products, as well as to say thank you to donors across the world.

Blood is a vital resource, both for planned treatments and emergency interventions and we use it every day in our hospitals. It is used in emergency traumas and accidents, lifesaving roles in childbirth, surgeries, as well as for a huge range of conditions such as cancers and blood disorders.

On our neonatal unit, just 10mls (a couple of teaspoons!) of blood can be used to treat anaemia in our premature babies. Sadly not all the patients can be treated due to low supplies, especially in certain blood groups – so please help if you are able.

Blood Types: There are 8 main blood types, and you can receive blood from the same blood type or one that is compatible with yours. This is the distribution of blood types in the UK:

O positive: 35%

O negative: 13%

•

A positive: 30%

•

A negative: 8%

•

B positive: 8%

•

B negative: 2%

•

AB positive: 2%

•

AB negative: 1%

Some blood types are higher in demand than others. If, like me, you have a less common and less in demand type, there may be a longer wait for a blood giving slot. In contrast, my partner is always able to book a slot as he is O negative - the universal donor type. This means his blood can be given to everyone and is therefore very useful to have on standby in the hospitals for emergencies.

Councillor’s Update Elleray Hall Re-Provision Update The Council’s Adult Social Services, Health and Housing Committee last month received a report on the recent Community Engagement and Consultation exercise on proposals for a new Elleray Hall. They noted general support for the provision of the new social centre but some concern on the use for it of the North Lane (East) Car Park. It was thought that parking issues could be satisfactorily accommodated but this would be separately addressed by the Council as Highways Authority. It was agreed to seek offers and interest from affordable housing providers for the present Hall site and capital finance was approved to bring the process up to Planning approval stage.

Station Lifts Receive Planning Permission The Council has now granted planning permission for the lifts at Teddington Station and Network Rail now need to acquire land, if necessary compulsorily, on the Station Road side where a shed belonging to the nursery stands in the way.
