History Focus - Some Teddington Celebrities Last month’s edition on the lost Film Studios raised a few memories from readers and I thought it was time to take a closer look at some of the names in entertainment who have made Teddington their second home.

The death of Dame Diana Rigg immediately recalls the days when The Avengers was made in Teddington. In the early days of the Studios, there was no licensed bar on the premises and as a result, most of the local pubs did a roaring trade from the actors and production staff. I clearly remember one episode in which Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) had to fend off a “baddie” with a judo throw.

The baddie was wrestler Jackie Pallo, playing a rogue gravedigger, and the stunt went slightly wrong with Jackie ending up being knocked out in the grave! The resultant party in the King’s Arms (The Clockhouse) must have gone on all night.

The King’s Arms was home to another star when the show was revised as The New Avengers and Patrick Newell, who played “Mother” the head of M15 was frequently seen propping up the bar with Dennis Price after a day’s filming.

The series was originally devised as a vehicle for Ian Hendry who played Dr David Keel in a spin-off of his previous series Police Surgeon. Patrick Macnee was in a supporting role as John Steed but for whatever reason, Ian Hendry did not sign up for a second series and Patrick Macnee took over the main role. Anglers” when not filming.

Another very long running TV series is Doctor Who and Teddington can claim several connections. Firstly, Patrick Troughton who played the second incarnation of the Doctor.

He was put up for the part by William Hartnell, the original Doctor and went on the play 125 episodes in the part. At the time he and his family were in a cottage in Park Lane. Leaving the show to avoid becoming typecast, he continued to work solidly until his untimely death in 1987.

He was attending a Science Fiction Convention in the USA when he suffered a massive heart attack and died instantly. His ashes were flown home to England where his widow scattered them beneath some newly planted trees in Bushy Park.

A few years after Patrick had left the show Jon Pertwee was in the role of the Doctor and a new adversary was added to the proceedings – The Master. After making a career of playing villains in most of the British adventure series of the day : Danger Man, The Saint, The Champions, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), The Avengers and as Mendoza, the Spanish ambassador in Sir Francis Drake, the actor with the surprising name of Roger Caesar Marius Bernard de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto or plain Roger Delgado to you and me, took on his most famous villain. Jon and Roger were close friends and were often seen Cont. Page 8

at “The Tide End Cottage” after filming. During this timer, Roger and family were happily ensconced in Park Lane. Tragically whilst filming in Turkey, Roger’s car went off the road and into a ravine killing him and the two Turkish technicians. Jon Pertwee was so upset by Roger’s death that he did not agree to do another for another series.

Speaking of The Master, we must not forget the original Master – Sir Noel Coward. After a long search, it was confirmed that Sir Noel was born at Helmsdale, 131 Waldegrave Road on 16 December 1899. It had been previously numbered as No. 5. Unfortunately there is no account of his ever having visited Teddington. He does leave us with this Personal Reminiscence : “I cannot remember I cannot remember The house where I was born But I know it was in Waldegrave Road Teddington, Middlesex Not far from the border of Surrey An unpretentious abode Which, I believe, Economy forced us to leave In rather a hurry.”

The truth of the matter was that his parents were broke and behind with the rent and a silent “moonlight flit” was necessary. The family left Teddington for Battersea in 1908 and never returned.

our older readers was Thorley Walters. He probably defined the English character actor although his parts were many and varied. He spent much of his life in Teddington and would frequently be seen walking the streets. His principle comedy roles were in : Carlton-Brown of the FO, Two-Way Stretch and the St Trinian’s films. He played the role of Dr Watson four times but never Holmes.

David Croft offered him the role of Captain Mainwaring in Dad’s Army but he turned it down and it went to Arthur Lowe.

The proximity of the Film Studios brought many stars to Teddington and my brother and his mates used to play football regularly on a Sunday morning at Broom Road Rec with the likes of singer/actor Tommy Steele, actor Patrick O’Connell from The Brothers and Robert Powell. After the game the young lads went home Patrick and Robert went round to the public bar of “The Railway Hotel”.

We have been blessed with many famous and household names both living and working in Teddington and I will be reminding of some more of them next month.

Saving Beth - Lousie Hamblin, Teddington Resident I held a life long belief that sport was not for me, and then during a routine medical I was told that my metabolic age was 74, a rude awakening for a 61 year old. This coincided with the beginning of lockdown and it became clear that being overweight and a habitual worrier would not serve me well.

Some months previously I had joined the Surrey Outdoor swimmers and had begun swimming in the Thames. As a way of coping with lockdown I began walking to Teddington lock and swimming daily, at first very short swims and then as the river temperature began to climb from 6 degrees centigrade I extended my time in the water. The river was a place where I began to find peace and physical well being and I began to think of her as Dr Thames.

For some time I had been fund raising for a friend who has Ehlers Danlos syndrome and needs an urgent life saving operation. I thought about doing a sponsored swim but didn’t have the confidence.

As my swims grew longer and more adventurous, my self belief and resilience also grew and in July I decide I would announce a 61 km swim in aid of Back Beth (https://www.gofundme.com/f/savingbeth-life-saving-surgery-fund).

Having made a public commitment I had to start .

My first swim, 21st of July , started on the Thames next to Hampton Court and was 900m and at the time of writing ( mid August) I have reached Henley swimming 36km in total, my longest swim to date is 3 km.

The health benefits have been amazing, I have lost 20 cm from my waist and whereas I used to hate walking up hills I now relish the challenge of a brisk uphill walk. More importantly I have now got body confidence and a positive can do attitude .

Life at 61 is good, I have made some fantastic friends in Surrey Outdoor swimmers and can’t thank them enough for all their support and encouragement on the way.

The Royal Parks

Be kind to your parks and they will be kind to you.

The parks have never been so important as a refuge where people could spend time in nature, boosting their physical and mental wellbeing. We’ve seen an increase in people coming to the Royal Parks to soak up the incredible natural environment and enjoy relaxing.

But you may have seen in the news that recently two fallow deer were caught on camera nosing through plastic bags filled with food waste, left by picnickers in Bushy Park.

We want everyone to have a good time in the parks – that’s what they’re here for - but sadly, this year, following the lockdown we saw an unprecedented rise in the amount of litter left.

We calculated an increase in litter of around a third this summer compared with last year. And there have been all sorts of things left behind. We’ve seen whole parties left behind – glass bottles, pizza boxes, plastic bags bursting with food – as well as plastic gloves and masks.

than last year, and this took staff 685 hours to clear away.

This is despite staff increasing the number of bins left in Bushy Park following lockdown by fifty percent, and on occasions grounds staff were staying until 9pm to clear rubbish.

Litter spoils the beautiful landscape. Collecting and disposing of litter takes time and money. The Royal Parks is a charity and we’re responsible to raising around 80 % of our own income - and money spent on clearing litter can’t be spent on other ways to keep our parks beautiful.

Dumped litter presents a huge risk to wildlife which is attracted to picnic scraps and sadly can accidently eat plastic bags along with the food. The plastic can block their digestive system causing a lingering death from starvation.

So we’re asking everyone who visits the parks to spread a bit of kindness and help us look after the environment. Binning litter or taking it home will keep the parks beautiful places for everyone to enjoy – and will help ensure that our incredible wildlife continues to thrive and stay safe.

And we can all do our bit to help the environment too by recycling what we can. Don’t forget to follow the bin labelling to make sure that only recyclable waste is placed in recycling bins so that it can be properly processed.

So please enjoy your visit to the beautiful spaces in our parks, and spare a thought for the wonderful wildlife which lives there. Be kind to your parks and they will be kind to you.

Tagliolini with White Truffles

Does it really matter how much it costs?!

This has to be one of my favourite times of the year when I get that first knock on the door from our truffle hunter. She walks in with a refrigerated wheelie suitcase, full of golden nuggets of deliciousness that fill the restaurant with an aroma best described as nutty, oaky and with a hint of succulent sweet but savory black olive. The real and only way to eat white truffles is as simply as possible, you don’t want to interfere with their flavour, so finely slice them wafer thin, either onto pasta, eggs or rice.

We may need to hold out a little longer, I anticipate that first knock to be around the middle of October and from then we should see them on the menu until Christmas. Keep an eye on our social media platforms to know when they have arrived, so not to miss out on the first batch.

We all know truffles are expensive and can reach several thousands of pounds per kilo, but when you know the truth, that you won’t get a nicer bowl of pasta, does it really matter…

Ingredients

Makes 4

• 500g x ‘OO’ flour • 180g x Egg yolks • 10cl x Olive oil • 1x Pinch of salt • 150g x Unsalted butter • 250ml x Chicken or vegetable stock • 80g x Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese • 6/8g x White truffle per portion

Method The Pasta 1 Sieve the flour on a large work surface and make a well in the flour.

2 Add the egg, salt and oil to the centre of the well and with a fork combine.

3 Once the dough is formed, knead for 5/10 minutes to form a firm ball.

4 Wrap in cling-film, allow to rest in the fridge overnight or a minimum of 4 hours.

Fix your pasta roller onto the side of a table securely. Cut the dough in half and slightly flatten with a rolling pin. Start to pass the dough through your pasta roller on its thickest setting. Then fold each sheet on itself and repeat at least 3 times, thinning it each time on a finer setting until the pasta is

just about thin enough for you to see your hand through it. Cut the sheet of pasta about 30cm long, and pass it through a tagliolini cutter. If you don’t have one of these you can always use a knife to cut the pasta into baby spaghetti; I quite like doing it this way as it gives a nice rustic and homemade feel to the dish.

The Sauce Add the stock to a large sauté pan and place over mediumhigh heat to bring to the boil.

Reduce the liquid by one-third, then turn the heat on low, add the butter, and gently move the pan back and forth over the burner until the butter melts and is incorporated into the stock. Season to taste with salt and remove from the heat.

Add the tagliolini to the boiling water and immediately stir to prevent the pasta from sticking together.

Cook for around 2 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente. Set aside a ladle of the cooking water and drain the pasta.

Carefully rewarm the sauce over a low heat. (If it gets too hot, the sauce will split; if this should happen, swirl in some of the reserved pasta water to reemulsify.) Add the pasta and some grated ParmigianoReggiano, and toss well to coat.

Divide the pasta among warm plates. Use a truffle slicer or a small handheld mandolin and thinly shave the truffles over the top.

DESiGN You can meet Cassandra and Rebecca at 141 Stanley Road, TW11 8UF Just a couple of months before lockdown, local Print Designer Rebecca J Mills and Stylist & Everlasting Floral Designer, Cassandra King launched an exciting new home interiors pop-up shop in Teddington.

The shop has affectionally become known as the Design POP UP and is a rich cornucopia of visual treats. We talk to the design duo as they announce their space will be here to stay!

Tell us why you originally set up the space: As local residents ourselves, we know that this area is design savvy and design hungry! We wanted to

combine our brands to create a new concept immersive retail space which would first and foremost showcase our designs - but was also part studio, workshop space and a local design hub where we want to support and showcase the best of other TW design talent and run workshops around design, flowers and interiors.

Can each of you describe your businesses?

Cassandra - I’m a florist and interior stylist and owner of Immortal Botanica, a uniquely different new brand of fearless and beautiful designs for your home and

retail spaces using florals that never die. I also provide a styling service for people’s homes and design floral installations for events and commercial and retail spaces.

Rebecca - I specialise in contemporary print design, applied to home decor, fashion and gifts; products include- cushions, lampshades, wallpaper, fabric, activewear and loungewear.

My prints are inspired by the amazing everyday, bringing a splash of beauty to your world.

What are your backgrounds?

Rebecca - My passion for pattern, interiors and fashion drove me to devote the first two decades of my career immersed in this world, where I worked for some of the world's leading brands, as a Buyer and Product Developer.

Cassandra - I have a background in photography, film and television and have worked in Hollywood alongside iconic film director David Lynch before casting comedy for television. I’ve been designing and working with everlasting florals for several years now and have been lucky enough to work with some incredible brands and publications.

What does the shop sell?

Rebecca’s designer fabrics, wallpapers, lampshades, cushions, rugs, and her newly launched loungewear

collection. We also have what we believe is the best stocked dried flower bar in West London and a large curated collection of favourite faux florals and house plants. We also sell Cassandra’s room scents she developed for the shop space, vases and Rebecca’s printed gift collection such as water bottles and bags.

What makes having the shop different to your online services?

It’s all about the client experience in store. The colours, textures - and even the smell as you walk in! We want you to have a really personalised customer experience and are on hand to offer advice on how to use Rebecca’s prints or fill your favourite vase you bring to us with faux flowers. Our customers often show us images of their homes and we can adapt our florals and designs to make them bespoke and unique to them.

we’ve had a ball! We call it our happy place!

Tell us a bit about how you have continued to operate through Covid.

The shop closed - but we carried on! We have offered kerb side collection and local delivery. Cassandra offers a FaceTime floral consultation and can make up your bouquets with you showing her ideas as you chat. We use a local network of makers, upholsterers and small businesses and it has been so important we try to continue supporting all those people as far as we have been able.

Collaboration and working with other small business in these times is key. And the area is stuffed full of incredible talent.

And going forward - what are your plans for the Design Pop Up? We can’t wait to be able to start offering our workshops again, and also plan to headline other local designers with their own POP UP section in the shop. Right now it’s important the shop is kept spacious and safe as we circumnavigate these crazy times. What we do know is that we are all loving our homes… and as far as we can we want to be here to be able to support you doing that!

School in the Time of Coronavirus - Darryl Wideman, Head of Radnor House School I am writing this after less than two weeks back at school for the autumn term. Although there have been pupils in school throughout the last few months – just a few children of keyworkers at first, then Year 6, followed by Year 5, Year 10 and the Lower Sixth in June – this is the first time that nearly 500 pupils and staff have all been in our school building since March.

We have been very fortunate at Radnor House that we were quickly able to develop a robust and effective remote learning programme. Taking on board feedback from what happened in March we have created a hybrid approach of teaching and learning both in class and at home for this term.

This means that both teachers and pupils who have to self-isolate have continued to be able to deliver and receive lessons from home, using the MS Teams platform and, increasingly, webcams and video feeds.

The experience for pupils, parents and staff will obviously vary from school to school, but I hope the following points will be applicable in most scenarios:

We have already had the first positive Covid-19 test, when a member of staff began to feel unwell not long after the start of term. It was a timely reminder to the whole school community that people can be ill without showing any symptoms and that we cannot afford for a moment to drop our guard on social distancing, risk assessment and the essential hygiene messages that we have all been told about from the outset. The frustrating lack of quick and effective testing means that schools have no choice but to err on the side of caution at such times, to ensure everyone stays as safe as they can.

It seems inevitable that the next few months will only bring more incidents and further difficult decisions. Schools are full of people with coughs and colds through the winter months, so the addition of coronavirus will only add to the anxieties and uncertainties that people will face.

Until a vaccine can be developed, we are all going to have to get used to managing the risks of living with the virus and deciding where our priorities lie. If we all agree that we cannot go back to a 38 | To advertise please call Christiane on 07974 500895

Trust your child’s school: If your school is anything like ours, the staff will have spent hours and hours carrying out risk assessments, measuring classrooms and public areas, installing sanitising dispensers and developing strategies for remote learning. There is a host of guidance for schools to follow, most of which is clear and sensible. While the staff at your child’s school may not always act in a way that you fully understand or agree with, I can assure you that it will not be for want of trying.

Be patient with the school: The head teacher and other senior leaders may have to make some difficult decisions, for example about sending children home or asking staff to self-isolate. Any disruption to normal routines can be frustrating for all concerned. All schools want to be open, with a full cohort of pupils and staff; but there will be times when this is simply not possible in the coming months. The health and welfare of the whole school community will always be at the heart of any decisions that are made.

Be prepared for fast developments: Most parents will no doubt have been delighted to send their children back to school, either so they can go back Cont. Page 40

to their place of work or operate more effectively in the home environment without being distracted as often. However, it will not take much for everyone to have to revert to a lockdown situation, even if we all hope it will not be for as long as last time. I would recommend that parents have up to date contingency plans ready at all times, because the situation in a school is likely to change very quickly if something serious happens.

Keep calm and carry on: A lot has been written about a ‘lost generation’ and six months of missed education, much of which is grossly exaggerated, particularly in those schools where an extensive remote learning programme was in place throughout the lockdown. If the road is bumpy in the coming months, I would strongly recommend that parents try not to worry. Most children in

supportive homes, with parents who can engage with them about aspects of their learning, will not fall behind their contemporaries to any significant degree.

Don’t worry about tests and exams: If you have children sitting public exams next year, I would be confident that they will treated fairly, not least because the government cannot afford another fiasco like the one in August. Selective senior schools will make appropriate allowances for those sitting entrance assessments, and any gaps in learning can usually be filled very quickly for the vast majority of pupils, not least because teachers are far more capable and children are far more resilient than the media sometimes give them credit for!

The portraits create a snapshot of the UK over lockdown, the amazing images convey humour,

grief, kindness, tragedy, and hope – all of which I am sure we shared at stages of our own experience.

In her new normal Millie (5 years old) made a cut out of her much-loved grandma (73 years old).

Millie sees grandma almost daily and lockdown prevented the pair from seeing each other. As a retired teacher, grandma would have made the perfect partner to help Millie with home schooling.

The bond between this grandma and granddaughter is truly a special one.

Roger McGough Annual Poetry Prize 2020: Identity The Roger McGough poetry prize is a national poetry competition welcoming submissions inspired by this year’s theme of identity.

Winning and shortlisted poems will be published in an anthology, with featured poets receiving a free copy.

Artist and tutor Karen Iredale Lucas has a Masters in Drawing, plus a PGCE, working internationally in Australia and Singapore before settling in Teddington.

She has experience in multiple mediums, such as watercolour, oil and collage to create images of landscape, still life and life drawing. Professionally, she has exhibited at Bankside, Royal Festival Hall and many other galleries in London, including more locally Turner’s House and Strawberry Hill House. Karen is also an exhibiting member of the Richmond Arts Society, with many pieces in private collections around the world. She participates in Richmond Arthouse Open Studios every year, encouraging and enabling her students to do the same.

Karen has successfully continued teaching throughout the Coronavirus crisis and has adapted to the challenges of the pandemic, using zoom and video tutorials to teach her students. Teaching this way has provided stability for her students, safety for those who are shielding, and a much need escape into creativity in these unusual and trying times. In-person teaching has now been resumed on Thursdays at the Langdon Arts Centre, plus an on-line class on Fridays.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Karen got her local community involved in a ‘rainbow themed’ art project to keep everyone’s spirits up and show support for key workers. The resulting artistic street was featured in The Guardian newspaper, and on the Richmond council website.

Soul Midwifery Our birth and our death are two of the most profound experiences unique to us as individuals.

At the time of our birth, there is the expert guidance and support of the midwife, (and others when necessary). We are all familiar with the Midwife at birth, but less so with the Soul Midwife who provides companionship, practical, emotional and spiritual support to those with a life-limiting illness and their families too.

Soul midwives can help formulate death plans, (just as an expectant mother makes a birth plan), which states their choices on such things as where they would choose to die, who would be present, and more. It is a very real privilege to be of service to those with a life limiting illness, helping them achieve a loving, peaceful, dignified death and as the birth midwife works alongside other health care professionals, soul midwives work alongside multi-professional teams too.

Likening the role of the soul midwife to the birth midwife is an easy way to explain what they do.

A birth midwife has an in-depth knowledge of the development of the baby, how to nurture the expectant mother and family during the pregnancy, has an in-depth knowledge of the process of labour and delivery, and the care of mother and baby afterwards.

In the same way, a soul midwife has an in-depth knowledge of the dying process, skills to help the dying prepare for their death whilst continuing to live as well as possible, and supporting their families also. They may help care for the body after death, and continue to support the family in bereavement.

Lastly, soul midwives also work to take the taboo out of talking about death and dying by being available to talk to anyone, with or without a lifelimiting illness on a 1:1 basis or in groups.

Memorial Quilt Project Proud Sponsor Of “Like during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, many people are looking for ways to capture their feelings and thoughts during the time of the Covid19 pandemic. They may want to pay tribute to lost loved ones, to key workers, to neighbours.

They may want to express that, for some, this was a moment where they discovered hidden wells of good humour and resilience. By creating a patchwork square, Richmond residents of all ages can express those thoughts and feelings.

The square will be fashioned into a quilted wall hanging representing the lockdown experience of the residents of Richmond upon Thames. The finished quilt will go on display at the Museum of Richmond.
