This has been the year to do the same thing but differently.

It has been unique and challenging but also rewarding.

On 23rd March we took the decision to keep our Teddington office open. As we prepared Wills we were essential workers and our offices allowed us to have 3 members of staff spread out and away from each other. We changed our working hours to 7am to 3pm so that we could go home and have our hour of exercise and eat well and relax. We took over the daily cleaning of the offices and we are still doing that task!

We were open every day and found ourselves preparing more Wills as clients now wanted to complete that task. We were also sadly dealing with many more probates. We found ourselves dealing with Statutory Declarations and Affidavits for new clients one of whom reported that if we had not agreed to see him the next solicitor who could help was in Upminster.

We wore gloves and had masks and special procedures to witness documents whilst keeping our distance and we installed screens. We updated our procedures as we went along as more became known about Covid 19.

It was reassuring to us and to clients to have that ‘voice on the phone still in the office’ and in some ways life continued as ‘normal’. As a result it has been a very busy year for us in Teddington. Our staff have been fantastic just coming in everyday and getting on with the work in hand.

Working for Refugee Action Kingston

Following my retirement from the NHS in April 2016, I had one of those chance conversations with a friend who worked for Refugee Action in Kingston (RAK). ‘They’re looking for volunteers,’ my friend said. It transpired that RAK was a local charity, supporting refugees and asylum seekers in the Kingston area. It was just the kind of voluntary work that appealed to me.

So it was that I was interviewed and accepted as a volunteer at RAK in September 2016.

Having spent some time teaching within the NHS, I joined some other volunteers already teaching in classes of between eight and twelve students. The nationality of students is varied; they include Syrians, Afghans, North Koreans, Sudanese, Albanians, Iranians and Iraqis. Students are in classes that reflect their ability and can move through the classes as their English improves. We aim to advance education and training opportunities so that students may more easily integrate and participate in their new community.

Of course, as we sadly all know too well, Covid-19 struck in March this year and all our lives were turned upside down.

As in many other communities throughout the UK, we set up a WhatsApp support group for our road. This gradually evolved into a fantastic opportunity for us all to request help and assistance for various groups, including homeless charities, foodbanks, educational support and so on. We linked in with other local WhatsApp groups and charities. One day, I put out a request for writing materials, 6 | To advertise please call Christiane on 07974 500895

books, pens and paints for refugee children, to help with their studies and recreation. The response was both swift and generous.

Within two or three days we had a hallway full of bags of useful materials of all kinds, and the donations continued for about a week. One of my neighbours was working for Crossroads and helping out at the Anglers pub in Teddington (which was doing great work for foodbanks), and she asked if RAK could use some excess frozen meals. The answer was ‘yes’ and the meals were kindly delivered by Ben, at the Anglers, to Piper Hall, which had been set up as a collection point for anyone in the area needing food.

In addition to all of this, neighbours got involved in many other projects, such as collecting fabric to make PPE bags for NHS staff and carers, and donating food parcels for AGE UK and toys for children who had very little during lockdown. During such a difficult time, this example of how communities work together was replicated in many areas and helped us all to feel we were able to make a difference, however small.

For the future, I think we are all hoping that life will return to some semblance of normality in the not too distant future, and I, for one, will be much happier teaching my lovely students in person rather than on Zoom!

Ken Howe: The Man Behind the Words Regular readers will be familiar with Ken Howe’s trademark wit and warmth through his columns in TW11. Last month we proudly published Teddington TW11 – A Collection of Local History Articles to coincide with Teddington Together’s local history trail. The book brings together Ken’s magazine articles over the past eight years, showcasing his ability to educate and entertain, and taking readers on a journey to the Teddington of old.

Familiar to many in the area, Ken has lived in Teddington all his life. He started to take a serious interest in local history when he became “too old to be knocked around the park every Saturday playing rugby”, as he puts it. After joining the History Section of The Teddington Society and the Borough of Twickenham Local History Society, he spent countless hours in the Local Studies Library, digging into old files and books to research Teddington’s history.

It’s clear that Ken’s many years of work and dedication to the subject have been a labour of love that’s given him great satisfaction, but what about the man himself?

We asked him to share a few details about his own life: • Ken spent his career in the insurance business: “It was something I drifted into after being blocked on going to Teacher Training College, although I suppose it was the right move in hindsight.”

• He lives with his wife, Teresa, plus “a very scheming cat, Felix, who is the real owner of the house.” An army of nephews and nieces keep them busy and, admits Ken, “it’s hard work keeping up with them all!”

• History – particularly local history – has always been a very keen interest of Ken’s and one that has grown over the years: “Fortunately my wife has always shared this interest, which has avoided some confrontations,” he quips.

friends of The Teddington Society and produced “Teddington Past and Present” in 1994. Since then, he has had several picture books published – his last major work was “Edwardian Teddington” where he edited the journal of a lifelong Teddington lady.

• His pet subject was the Bronze Age Barrow in Sandy Lane, leading to a paper being published in 2005 and culminating in the siting of a Teddington Society Local History Plaque in 2018.

• Ken’s favourite spot in Teddington is Bushy Park, even though, as he points out, most of it is actually in the parish of Hampton. “It’s always been my playground, since childhood. After breakfast I would call for my friend Mick next door and we would wander off to the park and not return until tea-time.”

It’s great to hear that Ken has no intention of hanging up his storytelling hat anytime soon. “I have met many wonderful people in the course of writing my articles, all of whom have contributed something towards the quality and continuity of my work…Thank you all. I love meeting and talking to you and acting on what you have to tell me. Keep the stories coming.”

History Focus - Some More Teddington Celebrities Last month’s dip into memory lane seems to have awakened some reminiscences amongst you readers.

In addition to the stars I hadn’t got around to writing about, there are now a new wave of Teddington characters to consider.

Knightley !” I gasped. She smiled and simply said “Yes.” For once I was absolutely speechless and we both went our separate ways. I am pleased to say that this encounter did not prevent her from becoming one of Hollywood’s highest paid actresses.

When writing about the Film Studios, I mentioned my favourite comedians — Dave Allen, Benny Hill and Windsor Davies. But I must not overlook the man who was surely to become the new master of situation comedy — Richard Beckinsale. Richard got his lucky break with Paula Wilcox in The Lovers which ran for 13 episodes. He was then cast in two of the funniest comedies of all time; as Alan Moore against Leonard Rossiter in Rising Damp and as Lennie Godber with Ronnie Barker in Porridge, It was quite a common sight to see Lennie Godber coming out of his house in Waldegrave Road or just shopping in Broad Street. His sudden and unexpected death was a great loss to British comedy.

Teddington has also been home to many musicians and singers over the years. Some of our older readers will no doubt remember the BBC Light Programme with the music broadcast Semprini Serenade which ran for over 25 years and was presented by concert pianist, Alberto Semprini, popularly known simply as Semprini. Despite the obvious Italian name, he was born in Bath and spent nearly all of his life in England. For him Teddington was well placed for London’s West End and he made the journey from his house in Park Road daily. He was also a popular recording artist and his version of the film theme of Exodus was well known.

I dare not go any further without mentioning Keira Knightley. A born and bred Teddingtonian who progressed through Broom Road School to an early screen career as a child actor before moving on to the full block-busters we all know from Bend It Like Beckham, Atonement, The Duchess and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. More recently she has earned critical acclaim for her parts in The Imitation Game and Official Secrets. I once had the misfortune (or fortune) to bump into Keira. It was a cold December morning and I was running late for work. I flew out of the front door without looking where I was going and collided with Keira knocking a bundle of Christmas cards out of her hands. Apologising profusely as I helped me pick them up, I suddenly realised who she was — “Wow ! You’re Keira 16 | To advertise please call Christiane on 07974 500895

Apart from Semprini, I have been reminded by Eddie Lillo that we and many others were driven to school by the “Cockney Sinatra.” This wasn’t strictly true as the driver — Matt Munro — was a North London boy and not born within the sound of Bow bells.

The actual limousine in question was a No 27 bus which ran from Teddington Station to Highbury. I don’t recall Matt ever singing whilst driving but he won so many talent contests that he was banned from entering them. Illness cut short his career or else he would doubtless be with the great crooners of all time.

Teddington has long been the home of young actresses even before Keira’s timeo Dodo Watts was a famous film star of the 1930s with over a dozen major films to her credit. After the 2nd WW she moved into the administration side of filming and became the principal casting director for ABC Television. It is Cont. Page 18

her that we have to thank for casting Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in The Avengers. She died at her home in Broom Road in 1990, aged 79.

Another well known name was Christine Norden, who achieved fame for her singing, dancing and acting. She was discovered by Sir Alexander Korda in a cinema queue, aged 200 She appeared in all of the main West End Theatres and was a star on both sides of the Atlantic.

She was the first entertainer to visit and perform for the troops after D-Day which made her a hit with the forces. She was almost as famous for the number of her marriages (five) as for any success in her career and with husband No 3 she moved to the USA and took American citizenship. In 1967 she caused a sensation by becoming the first actress to appear topless on Broadway. She returned to Teddington in the 1970s, still appearing on the London stage and with husband no 5 — a retired mathematician named George Heselden. She died in 1988 after heart surgery, aged 63.

In recent years, many celebrities have chosen over the border Strawberry Hill as their place of refuge. Starting with Rob Brydon who achieved fame as Geoff in his series of monologues about the cuckolded taxi driver. He then cropped up as Uncle Bryn in Gavin & Stacey, moving on to The Trip series with Steve Coogan whilst remaining the anchorman of the popular panel show Would I Lie to You. Hot on his heels were the established pair of Keeley Hawes and Matthew Macfadyen. They met on the set of Spooks in 2002 and moved to Strawberry Hill shortly afterwards. Keeley has had a remarkable run of television in the last 20 years. Apart from

Spooks, she has enjoyed starring roles in Ashes to Ashes, Upstairs Downstairs, The Missing, The Durrells, Line of Duty and Bodyguard. Matthew’s credits have been as numerous, starting with Pride and Prejudice opposite Keira Knightley, Ripper Street (36 episodes), The Pillars of the Earth.

Any Human Heart, and more recently as the Coughing Major in Quiz.

Finally the Tennant family — David, Georgia and their five children. What hasn’t been said about David Tennant clearly isn’t worth saying and so I shall leave it to another opportunity to concentrate on him.

Happily Teddington’s connection with the Arts continues with local actors Amanda Root and Tim McMullan. A rediscovered work by Rosina Filippi at the British Museum inspired Amanda to get together a group of friends to produce this work entitled Playing Jane as a COVID-19 busting performance to boost the work of the Landmark Arts Centre. Two shows were staged over two nights to packed houses. Tim McMullan, better known for his appearances in Foyle’s War and The Crown made an excellent Mr Collins in the memorable episode from Pride and Prejudice and the other members of the cast performed their parts admirably, It is to be hoped that Amanda will keep this company together and to repeat the experience of live theatre at the Landmark with another such masterpiece.

It’s all about the squeak!

The easiest and best way I find to cook artichokes is to steam them. Boiling artichokes tends to water-log them, whilst steaming artichokes cooks them with just the right amount of moisture. We add herbs, garlic, vinegar and lemon to the steaming water to infuse the artichokes, adding more flavour. A few things to look for when selecting an artichoke, first is the weight - the heavier the better, next is to check all the leaves are closed and are not loose, finally, and my favourite, is to give them a little squeeze, if you hear a squeak you’re in business!

I often get asked the best way to eat them simple, pull off the leaves and get dipping!

Just tear off the outer leaves one at a time and dip the white fleshy end into melted butter, a vinaigrette or hollandaise sauce, delicious.

Finally take out the choke by using a spoon and discard the inedible fuzzy part (the "choke") that sits above the artichoke heart.

Lots of guests forget about the heart, trust me, it’s not to be forgotten, it’s the best bit!

Ingredients • 1 or 2 large globe artichokes • 1 garlic bulb, cut in half (can leave skin on) • 2 bay leafs • 4 sprigs rosemary • 1 lemon (cut in half) • 2 litres white wine vinegar • 2 litres water

Method 1 Cut off the tips of the leaves.

If the artichokes have little thorns on the ends of their leaves, take a pair of kitchen scissors and cut off the tips, snipping them off will make the artichokes easier to handle.

2 Using a serrated knife, slice about 3/4 inch to an inch off the tip of the artichoke.

3 Remove the small leaves at the base and cut off the woody stem.

4 Rinse the artichokes in running cold water. While you rinse them, open up the leaves a little so that the water gets inside more easily.

5 Set up the pot of water with the vinegar and aromatics.

6 Place the artichokes on top of a steaming basket. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil.

Finally reduce heat to simmer.

7 Cook for around 25 - 45 minutes depending on the size of the artichoke. Keep an eye on the liquid, you may need to add more water if it starts to evaporate too much.

8 With a thin bladed knife, insert into the base of the artichoke heart, if there is no to little resistance, you’re good to go.

9 The liquid can be reused, just strain it through a sieve, pop it into the fridge or freezer for use another day.

The Chancellor’s Autumn Statement The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, set out new measures in response to the continuing economic impact of Coronavirus. Many of these build on announcements made earlier over spring and summer.

Income Tax

Under Mr Sunak’s earlier measures, income tax payments on account due 31 July 2020 could be deferred until 31 January 2021.

Now, these can be deferred further by spreading payments over 12 instalments with final payments due 31 January 2022.

Many small businesses have seen profits dip over the year. Claims should be made to HMRC to reduce payments on account due 31 January 2021 and 31 July 2021.

VAT

VAT that was due for payment to HMRC between 20 March 2020 and 30 June 2020 could be deferred until 31 March 2021.

Now, these payments can be deferred further by spreading over 11 interest free instalments.

Bounce Back Loan

The scheme is open to applications until 30 November 2020 offering loans up to £50,000 and repayment terms of 10 years. Although borrowers are liable for the loan, the government acts as a guarantor. The interest rate is fixed at 2.5%.

In the first year, borrowers make no repayments and the government pays the interest. They can pause repayments for 6 months if they have previously made 6 repayments, with no effect on credit ratings.

A new loan scheme will be launched in January 2021.

Reuse, Recycle and Reduce Waste at the Richmond Furniture Exchange - by Kate Chesshyre A recent British Heart Foundation survey reported only two in five adults buy second-hand furniture, whilst nearly half of Londoners admitted they have thrown away good quality furniture, electrical items and homewares rather than donating or selling on. Similar to the rapid growth of ‘fast fashion’ in the last twenty years, the ‘fast furniture’ industry encourages regular home interior updates whilst frequently overlooking the ‘where next’ for discarded short shelf-life purchases.

How to Boost Your Hormones

If you thought Social Distancing is tough, spare a thought for Puerto Ricans. In a public setting, such as a cafe, they would typically touch each other 180 times per hour! In case you wonder, in France it’s 110, and in England... zero. Really? Did they not count these long bear hugs even the French started copying?

Also surely Twickenham must be above the average, aren’t we?

gently skimming the skin with the tip of your fingers, is a great way to release another hormone: Endorphins. Its principal function is to inhibit the communication of pain signals. Beyond soothing, it can even produce a feeling of euphoria, because it binds to our opioid receptors.

Well, let’s hope we can soon make a new study of this type because, for the last nine months and counting, we’ve been severely restricted on the haptic (i.e. touch) front. The consequence has been a drop in our level of oxytocin, a powerful hormone linked to social bonding.

Reaching beyond the purely physical, all the following will release oxytocin: • Laughing, of course: so keep watching those funny videos. My personal favourite is Snowball, the cockatoo with 14 dancing moves.

• Being compassionate, first with ourselves (it always starts within), and then with others.

• Empathising with someone • Sharing positive stories, memories and feelings.

• Simply thinking about people you love, as long as you genuinely feel it.

Oxytocin is the chemical that shoots up after giving birth, making love, but also generally rises when touching others. Its level will affect • how we speak to people • our ability to listen and relate to others • feeling safe and supported • providing a sense of belonging As human beings, we need a sense of belonging, and our bodies need community, acceptance, and trust.

Could lower oxytocin levels explain some of the unkindness, anger and resentment we’ve seen around us? According to a Doctor I heard on a podcast, yes.

The great news is that even with social distancing, we still have many ways to boost oxytocin.

If you are lucky to have other people in your household, then hug, kiss and massage generously.

Health Corner - Dr Yuheng Zhou With the changing weather, the constant handwashing and use of alcohol gel and antibacterial sprays, eczema has been affecting a lot of people.

It is a common condition, affecting 1 in 5 children in the UK, and it is seen usually first in primary care by your GP. Some patients require referral to paediatric or dermatology outpatient clinic. Others may even require inpatient treatment. It can start in early infancy and continue throughout adulthood.

It is important to look after your skin at all times of the year, as it is the biggest organ in your body and vital part of your defence system.

What is eczema?

This is a non-contagious, inflammatory dry skin condition often running in families. There are many different types of eczema, but the most common is atopic eczema. The need to scratch can be overwhelming, and especially difficult to control in young children! Flare ups can result in red, cracked skin that is sore, and open to infection. This can lead to a deteriorating ‘itch –scratch cycle’ – we need to break this cycle to manage eczema effectively together and to improve quality of life.

What are the treatment options?

Reducing exposure to triggers Emollients : these are moisturisers, to prevent dryness of skin. Pump bottles are best to avoid dippings fingers in pots.

Ointments contain more oil than creams so can be greasy but is more effective for very dry skin.

Lotions contain the least amount of oil but can be less effective. Creams are in between. Check ingredients to avoid allergens.

Steroid creams: these are by prescription of varying strengths and reduces inflammation in flare ups.

Treating infection: this may require antibiotics or antiviral medication. Signs to watch out for are: oozing of fluid, yellow crusting on skin, fevers, pain or swelling, or if the rash changes in appearance – be sure to see a doctor or nurse for review.

Specialist treatments : by dermatologist including specialist medications/bandages or body suits/UV light.

Emollients: use liberally! Smooth in the same direction as hair grows. Some children will need new applications every few hours.

Steroids: ensure emollient has soaked in at least 30mins before applying steroid cream. We follow the Finger Tip Unit method (FTU).

Young Writers’ Festival 2020/21 Competition Launch Arts Richmond’s Annual writing competition for all young people in the borough.

Deadline for entries Friday 4th December 2020.

Arts Richmond Young Writers’ Festival is open to all young people who either live or attend school/clubs in the Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is a chance to demonstrate writing skills of any form: Stories, descriptive writing, poems, playlets, lyrics for songs - whatever the imagination can devise.

Entries are judged in four age groups with prizes for all winning entries. In addition, Arts Richmond appoints a Junior and Senior laureate who will be given opportunities during the following year to write about events taking place in the borough, for possible publication.

All shortlisted entrants will be invited to a gala awards event in a prestigious venue Spring 2021.

Entry rules are simple: Entrants may write about any subject of their choice, in any format (e.g. a poem, story, play script, News Item etc.) not exceeding 500 words or 25 lines for a poem, ENTRIES MUST BE IN TYPED FORMAT (Hand written entries will be disqualified) Extracts from longer pieces will be accepted. Let’s Go Outside & Learn CIC

Let’s Go Outside & Learn is a Twickenham based Community Interest Company that delivers nature based projects across the London Boroughs of Richmond and Hounslow.

The organisation uses nature to promote wellbeing and help tackle social isolation.

Let’s Go Outside & Learn works across all age groups including families and schools, however, since Covid 19, the main focus of their work has been with adults.

Let’s Go Outside & Learn have once again started leading outdoor sessions in LB of Richmond. Stroll & Chat sessions are taking place every Wednesday from 11am. The sessions are 45 mins long and allow individuals to join a social group and take a gentle stroll at their own pace.

WRITING A WILL BEWARE OF THE RULES OF INTESTACY Earlier this year, the set amount of money (‘statutory legacy’) left to the spouse of a person dying intestate without a valid will, and who also leaves surviving children, was increased slightly to £270,000.

Relying on the intestacy rules is often problematic for various reasons, including the following: 1. Most married couples with children prefer to leave their estate to the survivor outright, to ensure the surviving spouse has the maximum available capital in their old age.

Even where a couple prefers to leave their estate in trust for the survivor during their lifetime, passing down to their children on second death, the intestacy rules provide an immediate arbitrary split of the estate over and above the statutory legacy on death.

2. Inheritance tax allowances are not used effectively.

Depending on the size of the estate, the deceased’s available tax allowances and the value of the estate passing directly to the children, there could be a significant tax bill.

If the estate comprises mainly of property with little available cash, it may be difficult to find the funds to pay this.

If a will had been made, the tax liability could have been mitigated or delayed

until the death of the surviving spouse.

3. With the rise in couples cohabiting, the problem is amplified as a surviving cohabitant is not entitled to anything on their partner’s death. This is likely to cause extreme hardship for the survivor, who would need to hope for a successful claim for reasonable financial provision through the courts.

In the event the deceased does not leave a surviving spouse or children, the intestacy rules apply an order of priority for surviving next of kin. This is unlikely to have reflected the wishes of the deceased. In the absence of any immediate family, the deceased might have preferred to leave most of their estate to charity, thus saving up to 100% of any inheritance tax liability.

Therefore, it is vital to make a will and ensure this is kept up to date.
