Amid Uncertainty, Jobs Are the Popular Solution—page 3

President’s Message Amid uncertainty, jobs are the popular solution Everywhere you look, jobs are being offered as the solution to our economic problems. I am glad to see so many rally around the importance of jobs in our cities, across the state, from one U.S. coast to the other, and even around the world. For decades, TwinWest has adopted a jobsfriendly agenda, and frequently our response to finding the resources needed to satisfy our societal cravings has been jobs and their growth. You have probably heard me say a time or two that if we want strong schools, good roads, and solid social infrastructure, we need more good jobs. Governor Mark Dayton agrees. This fall the Governor toured the state, topped off by a Jobs Summit in late October where 800 people spent the day discussing how to get job creation moving. At that summit, former Medtronic CEO Bill George said that Minnesota still has the resources to become a national job creation leader. A day later the Governor announced $100 million in new funding for small businesses in Minnesota, citing the need to give businesses tools to increase jobs. Also in October, Minnesota Representatives Connie Doepke and Sarah Anderson visited TwinWest’s Government Affairs Committee a week after House Speaker Kurt Zellers and Representative Ryan Winkler discussed Reform 2.0 at a Legislative Breakfast event. Representatives Doepke and Anderson asked a packed room for ideas on how to streamline government and foster job creation. Those ideas will be considered as the Legislature convenes in 2012. President Obama recently released his proposed ―American Jobs Act,‖ and Congressional Republicans have a ―Plan for America’s Job Creators.‖ Open the newspaper, editors are writing about jobs. Turn on the radio, jobs. Blogs...jobs. TwinWest is pleased to see the value of a job understood and sought after. Now we need to get down to the real work of sorting out what will truly grow jobs and get the economy moving.

TwinWest Foundation A Legacy of giving nears $1 million in support to our community & workforce TwinWest is known as one of the most active and involved chambers of commerce in our area. From providing over 100 networking events per year, to its comprehensive advocacy work at both the local and state level, the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce offers a lot to its member businesses and organizations. What some members might not know is that TwinWest is also home to Minnesota’s largest chamber of commerce Foundation. Thanks to the generosity of the business community in the western Twin Cities area, the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce Foundation has distributed over $900,000 in scholarships and community grants since its inception in 1982. What’s more, the TwinWest Foundation will surpass the one million dollar mark in giving later this fiscal year.

Committee vetted applications and met with selected finalists to determine the scholarship award winners. Last year alone, the High School Scholarship Committee vetted 176 applications from eight area schools and awarded over $50,000 to 45 graduating seniors. This is a lengthy process and none of it would be possible without the dedication and hard work of the volunteers on the High School Scholarship Committee. In the later part of the 1990s the Foundation raised $100,000 to create a Legacy Endowment that offers one $5,000-$7,500 scholarship to one student every year. To date, the TwinWest Foundation has awarded over $50,000 in scholarship funds through the Legacy Scholarship program alone. Career Path Scholarships

High School Scholarships Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s the TwinWest Foundation offered community grants for different initiatives throughout the communities that TwinWest serves. In the mid-nineties, the TwinWest Foundation’s Board of Directors elected to become more involved in the organization’s giving program. Volunteers from the Foundation’s Board assembled to create the High School Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship

Several years ago, the Foundation’s Board of Directors saw there was a need to help adult students heading back to school to pursue additional job skills training or accreditation. Today, the TwinWest Foundation’s Career Path Scholarship Program has funded more than $125,000 in scholarships to over one hundred students. Last year, the Foundation granted $30,000 in scholarships to 30 adult students in our area. This year’s award recipients are studying auto mechanics,

medical coding, and massage therapy among many other pursuits. Again, none of this would be possible without the hard work of the volunteers who make up the Foundation’s Career Path Scholarship Committee. A Lasting Legacy Perhaps what’s most impressive about the TwinWest Foundation’s success is the organization’s sustained commitment to its mission and our community at large. Throughout the recent economic downturn, the dedicated volunteers who drive the TwinWest Foundation have gone the extra mile to make sure the Foundation maintains its community impact and offers significant scholarship funding year in and year out. What’s equally impressive, is the local business community’s foresight and willingness to step up to the plate and do what’s needed to make sure that we invest in tomorrow’s leaders today. Profile

Minnetonka Mayor Terry Schneider Elected: 1991 elected to the Council; 2008 became Mayor; 2009 elected to a 4-year Mayor term City: Minnetonka Contact Information: tschneider@eminnetonka.com, 952.939.8389 Education: BA degree in Architecture and MBA degree from the University of Nebraska Family: wife Beth; five adult children; seven grandchildren Committees/organizations you participate in as Mayor: Regional Council of Mayors, MetroGIS Policy Board (chair), Homes Within Reach (treasurer), Southwest Light Rail Management Committee, Sensible Land Use Coalition (treasurer), MetroCities Metropolitan Governance Committee, League of Minnesota Cities Land Use & Transportation Policy Committee What initially sparked your interest in running for public office? When I first arrived in Minnetonka in 1971 I became involved in the Minnetonka Jaycees, where I chaired the creation of Big Willow Park on Minnetonka Boulevard. Due to that involvement, I was appointed to the Park Board which I served on for four years, two as its chair. I was then was appointed to the Planning Commission which I served on for eight years, four as its chair. I was then

encouraged to run for city council and did so in 1991, being elected as an At-Large council member. What are the biggest issues facing your city? While the city is in a very sound financial position, many of our residents would like their taxes reduced. Our biggest challenge is to continue to provide quality services that our citizens value while keeping costs under control. What is your favorite part of being mayor? When I get a call form an upset citizen and have an opportunity to either help resolve the issue that has them upset, or explain the background and reasons why the city handles the issue they way they do and with that background and explanation the citizen ends up being supportive of how the city handled the issue. What initiative are you most proud of during your time on the city council or as mayor? Reconstituting the Economic Development Authority as an Economic Development Advisory Commission that had an expanded membership with specific skill set to focus on business development and job creation in the community.

What advice do you have for members to make an impact in city government? Other than serve on boards and commissions or the city council, I would recommend learning more about how the city works and the thought process that the council and city manager goes through to make key decisions. One good way to do that is to enroll in the 8 week Citizens Academy that the city offers each year. What is your favorite city landmark? The Burwell House on Minnetonka Boulevard and Plymouth Road. What is something from your past or present that people would be surprised to know about you? I have a fairly extensive collection of antique cast iron toys. Link | City of Minnetonka
