Retaining top performers before it’s too late When times are tough, employers often neglect their key talent because they are too busy focusing on other areas they think require more attention. By the time the company is back on its feet, these highly qualified employees are eager to leave and make a fresh start elsewhere. The price of replacing good employees can be costly: The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that it costs a company at least one-third of a new hire’s annual salary to replace an employee. But there still is time for business owners to develop long-term strategies to keep star performers.

Rebuild trust. Communication can be an effective tool to help build trust. Openly talking to staff on a regular basis helps to ensure everyone is on the same page. Encourage career fulfillment. Top performers want to be challenged and grow with a company that helps them maintain a successful career path. They need to know how they can improve and what opportunities are in store for them.

Hold leaders accountable. People want to work for a boss who clearly defines job expectations and provides balanced feedback. A boss who is constantly late for his own meetings, is never accessible or does not provide employees with the tools and resources they need is not going to be highly regarded by good employees. Recognize hard work. Showering employees with simple thank yous or small tokens of gratitude can make all the difference in the world. Good employees are less likely to look for another job when they know how their current employer greatly appreciates them. Business owners must shift their focus and make top performers their main priority. They are critical to the future success of the company and worth every ounce of an employer’s attention.

profiles

Senator Ron Latz: District 44 We had a chance to catch up with Senator Ron Latz, District 44, to get his take on the legislative issues as well as a glimpse of his personal profile.

Year Elected: 2006 to Senate; 2002, 2004 to House Number of Terms Served: Senate: 1 Legislative District: 44 Home: St. Louis Park Education: J.D., Harvard Law School; B.A. University of Wisconsin-Madison -- w/Honors/ Phi Beta Kappa Occupation: Attorney, Ronald S. Latz, P.A. Family: Wife Julia; children Nathan (11), Miya (8), Yana (2) Committees: Business Industry & Jobs; Public Safety Finance Division (vice-chair); Higher Education Policy and Finance

What prompted you to seek public office? I believe in the philosophy of representative government whereby the people self-govern by electing representatives to a governing body to make collective decisions on behalf of the community. This is my way of working to make society a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family. This approach has undergirded my work on campaigns since I was a young child, my service on many community boards, and my public service in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, the House of Representatives and now the State Senate. I grew up in a political family, so I have always had a positive view of the value of public service, and this route to achieving it. What accomplishments are most notable, or are you most proud of, as a state senator? The Freedom to Breathe Act expanded the statewide indoor air smoking ban under the Clean Indoor Air Act to restaurants, bars and service clubs. I chief authored the bill for four years in the House, and we passed it my first year in the Senate. I also carried the Senate legislation to compensate the survivors and families impacted by the 35W bridge collapse.

What tools does the legislature have to help Minnesota’s business community best compete in a global economy? We have many tools, including: providing for an educated and healthy workforce through early childhood, K-12 and higher education, along with health insurance coverage and public health activities; creating a vibrant environment for entrepreneurship, including tax incentives for investment and research; and maintaining and building out a multi-modal transportation system that facilitates the efficient movement of goods and people. Why is the business community important to you? Businesses provide jobs and income for our community, as well as the goods and services people need to live happily and productively. They also provide the resources - directly and indirectly - for the community to act collectively through government to advance the tools described above. What should be a top priority for the legislature during the 2011 session? We must restructure the budget for long-term balance between revenues and expenditures, so that we do not continue to lurch from one budget crisis to the next. This includes accounting for inflation on both sides of the ledger for more honest accounting, continuing to scrutinize expenditures carefully, stabilizing the revenue stream with enough resources to meet the needs of our state, and fairly distributing the revenue raising burden (i.e., restoring a progressive tax system) that reflects ability to pay and the social costs of certain kinds of activities. What is something past or present that people would be surprised to know about you? I played the trombone in the University of Wisconsin-Madison jazz ensemble for 4 years during college.

B u s i n e s s B allot In an effort to gage the views of business leaders, TwinWest produces a monthly business ballot on various issues. Results below are from the Legislative Breakfast on April 9, 2010. The Balanced Budget Amendment is a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would require a balance in the projected revenues, and expenditures of the United States government. Most such proposals contain a supermajority exception allowed for times of war or national emergency. While no balanced budget amendment has passed at the national level, every U.S. state except Vermont has a form of Balanced Budget Amendment. 87.5% - I support Congress passing a Balanced Budget Amendment 12.5% - I oppose proposals for a Federal Balanced Budget Amendment

Congressional earmarking is a legislative provision that directs approved funds to be spent on specific projects or that directs specific exemptions from taxes or mandated fees. Earmarks can be added on to appropriations bills (causing more money to be spent) or they can be “carved out” of bills (the same amount of money is spent, but restrictions are placed on how the money is spent). Democrats, who control the U.S. House, recently announced a ban on earmarks directed to private companies. Democrats said they still would allow lawmakers to direct billions in federal spending to nonprofit and government entities, such as universities. The following day, U.S. House Republicans imposed upon themselves a one-year moratorium on all earmarks. 10% - I support Congressional earmarking 90% - I oppose Congressional earmarking

TwinWest Foundation awards $45,000 in scholarships to our future leaders On April 20, the TwinWest Foundation was pleased to announce $45,000 in High School Scholarships to 51 area graduating seniors. Award winners represent high school seniors from Benilde-St. Margaret’s School, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Providence Academy, RobbinsdaleArmstrong, Robbinsdale-Cooper, St. Louis Park, and Wayzata high schools. “The TwinWest Chamber of Commerce Foundation is pleased to award college scholarships to outstanding graduating high school seniors this spring. The Foundation is proud to support and invest in tomorrow’s business and community leaders,” says Jim Snoxell, an attorney with Henningson & Snoxell, Ltd. and chair of the TwinWest Chamber Foundation’s Board of Directors. “Each scholarship recipient is an outstanding person deserving of our financial support to help meet the high cost of a college education.” At the top of this year’s recipient list is the 2010 $5,000 Legacy Scholarship Award winner, Zach Sperry, a graduating senior at Wayzata High School. “Zach Sperry stood out in all areas as the scholarship committee reviewed applications. His academic achievement was top of the class. Zach displayed leadership, skill and depth in his extracurricular activities. His commitment and leadership in volunteering was exceptional. His employment experience showed maturity, effort and focus toward his higher educational goals,” says Charlie Jacobson, Liberty Diversified International, chair of the Foundation’s High School Scholarship Committee. “Most of all, Zach was selected for the TwinWest Foundation Legacy Scholarship because of the character and charisma he brought to his interview. We appreciated the wisdom and responsibility he shared in his choices and vision. “ Zach will be attending the College of Science and Engineering at the University of MinnesotaTwin Cities next fall where he plans on studying biomedical engineering. “I decided to study this because, from what I’ve read, the field is nearly limitless, and has so much potential for creating good in our world. I also want to find ways to make biotech more affordable so that ‘optional’ life-improving devices become accessible to those who need them most. Who knows? Maybe I will end up founding my own biotech company. Everything is so wide open.” True to the grounded and thoughtful perspective he shared during his scholarship interview, Zach understands what the Legacy Scholarship will mean for his future. “The main thread of advice that I’ve gleaned from adults who have gone to

college before me is the importance of keeping college debt low. The debt, they tell me, is a crippling economic factor that leaves them less freedom to pursue their goals. The generous scholarship that TwinWest has awarded me is one more step in the process of opening up my future so that I can be all that I am able without as much hindrance in financial areas.” The TwinWest Foundation is the oldest, and one of the most active, Chamber of Commerce philanthropic institutions in the State of Minnesota. Since its inception in 1982, the Foundation has raised and awarded more than $850,000 to individuals and community projects in the region. While TwinWest members are known for their sustained commitment of time and resources to support lifelong learning, their dedication has been tested during the recent economic

downturn. Fortunately, these members and volunteers who work closely with the TwinWest Foundation also recognize the value and benefit the foundation brings to the community. “During these tough economic times budgets are very tight. It’s important to make sure that we direct our resources to programs and initiatives that will have a lasting and profound impact in the community,” says Connie Bakken of Citizens Independent Bank. “We are proud to support tomorrow’s leaders.”

Congratulations to these 2010 TwinWest Foundation scholarship award winners and thank you to the generous donors! Stephanie Cadmus is TwinWest’s May Volunteer Superstar! Stephanie has been extremely generous with her time and her talents. As the graphic design sponsor for the TwinWest Chamber’s annual Gala, she and the designers at Mod&Co did a fantastic job promoting the event. Their save the date cards, invitations, and advertisements all maintained a glamourous and consistent look. Stephanie was also on the Gala décor committee. Her chic sense of style and practical logic made her a huge resource for that sub committee. The 2010 Gala was a great success thanks in large part to Stephanie and her team. TwinWest is very fortunate to have Stephanie involved. Thank you for all your hard work!
