TwinWest’s Ambassadors and Emerging Leaders make us a better business community The depth of TwinWest’s benefit offerings are such that you can attend a year’s worth of activities based on your interests and not come close to meeting many other active members. TwinWest has two groups that work across all areas of the Chamber that I want to introduce you to today: our Ambassadors and our Emerging Leaders. Both of these groups bring leadership and energy to TwinWest as an organization, are connected to the business community at large, and work across TwinWest’s public policy, networking, education, and community connection platforms. As you get ready to review your TwinWest participation options for 2011 and are looking for great business community connection opportunities, I encourage you to investigate these groups.

TwinWest’s Ambassadors The TwinWest Ambassadors are the public relations arm of the Chamber. When a business is celebrating a grand opening, conducting a ribbon cutting, or experiencing anything of a celebratory nature, the TwinWest Ambassadors are there to help. Nearly 70 members serve as Ambassadors under the leadership of Pat Bedell, owner of Sign-a-Rama, in Crystal. The group ensures that area business events are promoted by TwinWest and are well attended. In addition, the Ambassadors take part in many philanthropic endeavors benefiting area nonprofit organizations. The Ambassadors don’t meet as a group on a regular basis, rather they gather when called to action. As an example, in October the TwinWest Ambassadors participated in six ribbon cuttings without having an additional set meeting. TwinWest’s Ambassadors believe that businesses should be celebrated for their great contributions to our neighborhoods and our economy. Our young professionals group was one of the first started by a chamber of commerce and communicates with 250 area professionals interested in establishing business connections, developing professional skills, giving back to the community, and growing their presence in our communities. One of the flagship offerings of the Emerging Leaders group is a monthly “On the Fast Track” Luncheon. With a theme focused on educating emerging leaders on the culture of the Twin Cities through TwinWest, topics for the upcoming year include understanding philanthropic options, speed networking, effective networking, and building a personal brand. Caliber Development Corporation is a full service commercial real estate development company. I grew up on a farm and I took that experience, combined it with my real estate development expertise, and started this division. Would you be inclined to step forward and interact with any of them?

Without realizing it, many people make these same business blunders every day when meeting with potential clients, trying to close a deal, or just having lunch with colleagues. Unknowingly, we give negative, non-verbal clues about who we are and where our values lie just by the way we dress and by our demeanor.

Blunder #2: Poor Non-Verbals Maintaining eye contact while talking can be a difficult thing to do, especially when meeting new people. But a person who purposefully avoids eye contact by gazing around the room or looking down at the floor makes for an uncomfortable encounter. Likewise, a limp handshake shows a lack of confidence and is poor business etiquette.

To avoid the most common business blunders, you must first become aware that you’re guilty of the crime. Here are the top three mistakes most commonly made, and ideas for avoiding them.

Next time you meet someone or greet a current client, extend a firm handshake while looking in their eyes. Both are a sign of respect for the other individual and will instantly tell them that you’re confident and professional.

Blunder #1: Poor Dressing Still wearing your favorite Peter Pan-collared dress or plaid suit from the 1970s? Or maybe you’re taking the concept of “business casual” too far, thinking the tennis shoes you garden in are also fine for work. You may think that these items look fine on you, but you’re projecting an image that screams, “I could care less what I look like.”

Blunder #3: Poor Phone Etiquette Cell phones can be both helpful and a hindrance. If used inappropriately, such as during an interview, a sales call, or even while standing in line for coffee, cell phones can quickly turn into an annoyance for those around you. By answering your cell phone during inappropriate times, you’re telling others that they are unimportant to you at that moment.

Your Involvement in TwinWest – Your Voice in Government The TwinWest Chamber mission statement is clear. TwinWest is an advocate for business. We are the voice of business in government and provide our members opportunities to grow their businesses and improve their communities. In addition, one of TwinWest’s Value Statements includes “advocacy.” TwinWest impacts the business climate. We involve and inform members and influence public policy. We provide opportunities for members to advocate for one another. Business leaders understand that public policy decisions directly impact the cost of doing business. At TwinWest, we are actively working to ensure the business voice is heard loud and clear to promote a strong climate for member businesses. We encourage you to get to know your elected and appointed officials who make public policy decisions that impact your community.

Unfortunately, with busy, packed schedules and keeping an eye on the bottom line of your business, you may wonder if you have time to devote to getting involved. If you have time, how can you get involved in the public policy and political process? TwinWest makes it easy to be engaged in a variety of ways that promote a stronger business climate and provide steps toward economic growth. The Business Agenda & Government Affairs Committee TwinWest supports legislation that creates an improved business climate for our members, our region, and the entire state of Minnesota. Each year, the TwinWest Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Mike Lehmann of Ferguson Enterprises, Inc., develops policies to drive the Chamber’s efforts during the

legislative session. These policies are published in our annual Business Agenda, available online (www.twinwest.com/businessagenda) and in print. The Business Agenda is intended to give business leaders a tool to better understand our positions and to get involved in bringing our message to the Capitol. Leaders cast their vote on the impact of the elections on business and TwinWest Across the country and in Minnesota, voters in the November 2 elections changed the face of politics. Voters returned Republicans to the majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives. In addition, voters gave Republicans a majority in the State Senate for the first time since 1972. As of press time, the gubernatorial race is undecided, with Mark Dayton in the lead by nearly 9,000 votes over Tom Emmer. This vote margin triggered an automatic recount under state law. To understand the impact of the elections on businesses, the business community, and on TwinWest and its sister organizations, TwinWest asked key member leaders for their perspective on the results of the elections. Here is what they had to say.

Dannette Coleman Vice President and General Manager of Individual Business, Medica Chair of the TwinWest Board of Directors 1. How do you see the results of the November 2 elections impacting Medica? The health care industry is undergoing significant change given the recent health care reform that came out of Washington. Much of the implementation of that reform is left to the states to manage. One significant example is the requirement for each state to create health insurance “Exchanges” where individuals and small employers can shop for health insurance. There are different models that states can follow with varying degrees of government intervention. For example, a state could create an Exchange model where government dictates prices and does not allow a market outside of this apparatus. On the other hand, the state could create a model where there are multiple options for consumers and prices and they can shop inside or outside of the Exchange with prices determined by the market (which would be subsidized inside the Exchange for families of certain income levels). Although the outcome of the Governor’s race is yet unknown, I am confident that the now Republican controlled House and Senate will recognize the value of a market-driven Exchange that will promote competition and value for consumers.

2. What do you see as the impact of the elections on the business community in general? I think that regardless of the outcomes of this election, the challenges to the business community will be great in the upcoming year. A nearly $6 billion deficit will need to be addressed and regardless of the make up of the legislature, everyone will share the pain that is coming. One re-elected legislator was recently quoted as saying “the people have spoken, I just wish I knew what they said.” What the people said was that jobs and the economy are their number one concern. I applaud Representative Kurt Zellers (R-Maple Grove) for his remarks the day after the election in which he articulated a focus on job creation and the elimination of unnecessary regulation. Again, the challenges ahead for the business community and the state are immense, but I am confident that the legislature will look at every budget-balancing proposal through a lens that considers the impact on jobs and the economy. 3. Given the results of the election, will the work of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce change on January 1, 2011? I don’t know that the outcome of the election will greatly impact the work of the Chamber. The TwinWest Chamber will continue to focus its legislative agenda on the same issues that it has in previous years; tax policy, state government spending and redesign, transportation, health care, energy, education, and local government. We are prepared to come to the table and offer our ideas and solutions and provide leadership in this incredibly challenging time in our state’s history.

I still think we are several months away from measurable growth in the small business sector, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel after this election. What do you see as the impact of the elections on the business community in general? This election gives small business a cautiously optimistic outlook. We have a hard road ahead with the budget deficit in Minnesota and across the United States, including the federal deficit. If nothing is done to curtail new spending and to draw back current spending taxes will be going up in Minnesota and in the United States. With a more balanced government the hope is we can get spending in line at the state and national level and avoid tax increases that would inhibit a recovery. Given the results of the election, will the work of the TwinWest Foundation change on January 1, 2011? The TwinWest Chamber Foundation will not be changing what we do, but we will be doing more of what have done in the past. The TwinWest Foundation has had a few tough years and I think this year will be just as challenging. The need for the scholarships we distribute has increased while our donor base has run into financial challenges. We will be calling on a larger donor base to continue to meet the scholarship needs of our community.

We are currently soliciting nominations for our 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year and Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year awards. These awards give attention to those who not only take the risk of starting and running businesses, but are also dedicated to the success of their communities. Candidates for these awards are judged on business strategies, financial success and community involvement. Our Small Business Awards Task Force, made up of TwinWest members, will select the finalists in March 2011. These finalists will be featured on the cover of Directions magazine, and we’ll announce our winners at our annual Small Business Awards Luncheon on May 20, 2011 at the Doubletree Hotel Minneapolis Park Place in St. Louis Park. TwinWest Foundation 2011 High School Scholarship applications available Each year TwinWest Foundation scholarships are granted to graduating high school students from TwinWest member school districts and private schools. Students are evaluated based on their academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, community service, work history, and financial need. Typical college scholarships range from $500 to $1,500. The Foundation’s Legacy Scholarship, ranging from $5,000 to $7,500, is awarded each year to one outstanding high school senior who exemplifies positive leadership attributes and is a wellrounded student role model. The TwinWest Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Breakfast series is Minnesota’s premier legislative and political forum. Business Day at the Capitol

TwinWest joins the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, and chambers of commerce from across the state, at Minnesota Business Day at the Capitol. This day is set aside to provide all sizes and types of Minnesota companies the opportunity to see the Legislature in action and to influence public policy decisions. Over 800 business leaders gather for a day of education and lobbying at the Capitol. This year Business Day at the Capitol will be held on March 16. TwinWest will provide more information as the event date approaches. TwinWest business leaders hear from Legislative Leadership and the Governor on what priorities are being addressed and what impacts they will have on the business community. Public policy experts take participants through a quick pro-business priorities session to help educate members on pending legislation and initiatives. TwinWest then plans a session for members devoted to meeting with local area legislators to have a dialogue on the Business Agenda and specific policy interests of the business community. Registration for Business Day at the Capitol is required.

The old saying is true – government will either do something for you or it will do something to you, but it will do something. To be effective in today’s business climate, you need to understand how government works and how you can influence the process. Every other year, TwinWest offers a dynamic, four-session series called Inside Politics to teach you how government impacts your business and how you can proactively impact government. Participants learn the inside scoop about our political process from Minnesota’s top political experts. Our faculty includes U.S. Congress members, state legislators, county commissioners, city officials, school board members, administration officials, and lobbyists. These insiders unlock political secrets from city hall to the U.S. Capitol and explain how things really work using language you’ll understand. The class returns in 2011, with sessions on the second Tuesday of October, November, January and February from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. TwinWest will provide more details in the spring of 2011 with registration and participation information. TwinWest Business Councils

The series strikes a balance between public policy and intriguing dialogue while presenting the opportunity to develop strong relationships with TwinWest region legislators and public officials. Some of the big names and featured topics from past Legislative Breakfasts include: Governor Tim Pawlenty; a session preview with House Majority Leader Tony Sertich and House Minority Leader Kurt Zellers; Congressman Erik Paulsen; political insights from the chairs of the DFL, IP, and GOP political parties;

TwinWest hosts two local Business Councils. The Crystal/New Hope Business Council, chaired by Pat Bedell of Sign-A-Rama, and the St. Louis Park Business Council, chaired by Dan Goldman of Twin Realty Investment Co., offer monthly meetings to engage in conversations on timely topics with city, school, county, and state public officials. The Crystal/New Hope Business Council meets on the third Thursday every month at Liberty Diversified International in New Hope from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The St. Louis Park Business Council meets at the Wolfe Lake Professional Center in St. Louis Park on the first Thursday of every month from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. No registration is required. What do you see as the impact of the elections on the business community in general? The election itself will not help the general business community unless Congress and Minnesota’s legislators work together to improve our economy. Business owners need to be convinced that government will help grow this economy. This will mean control of government spending and deficits, control the increase in taxes and control of business regulations. 3. Given the results of the election, will the work of the TwinWest Chamber Political Action Committee change on January 1, 2011? If so, how? The TwinWest Political Action Committee endorses political candidates for state constitutional, state legislative, and county offices whose platforms support private enterprise and work to improve economic conditions in the Twin Cities for the State of Minnesota. We will continue to help elect pro-business candidates to the Minnesota Legislature.

How do you see the results of the November 2 elections impacting Larkin Hoffman Attorneys? My firm’s growth generally tracks with the growth and successes of our clients. I think that many businesses will see this result as providing more certainty and predictability in the marketplace and as a result will “get back in the game.” If our national leaders are able to extend the Bush tax cuts in full, I think that it will be a huge benefit to many of our small business owner clients and we will see significant growth in our practice in the short term. 2. What do you see as the impact of the elections on the business community in general?

There remain a number of significant issues that need to be resolved, including health care, extending the Bush tax cuts, and pulling back the stifling regulatory environment, but I think that the business community will see this election as providing leaders who are more in tune with resolving these issues in a pro-business manner and, frankly, leaders who will provide them the certainty and predictability they need to get back to work. 3. Given the results of the election, will the work of the TwinWest Emerging Leaders Council change on January 1, 2011? If so, how? The role of the Emerging Leaders is to provide education and business development opportunities for folks in the first half of their careers. I expect that there will be significant changes in the way government interacts with business, which will keep us busy providing new programming. Further, as the economy recovers, there will be a lot of opportunities for our members to pursue. Hopefully we can assist them in making the connections that will help them succeed in their businesses.
