President’s Report Stu Byman Hello fellow breeders, I hope everyone is doing well! With renewed optimism from the abundant snowfall and some hopeful spring rains, ranchers will be rewarded with abundant grass and feed this summer. First of all, I want to touch on this past fall’s success with shows and Congress. It was fantastic seeing everyone out promoting and showing Maine-Anjou cattle at Farmfair and the Congress at Agribition. It was sure nice to see old and new faces out; the enthusiasm was surreal among Maine breeders in these covid times. Not only was it evident ranchers were happy to be out promoting their livestock, but the interest in the modern Maines was very apparent from the traffic and business through the isles and obviously the World sale.

MAINE MAIL | VOL. 12 ISSUE 1

The Maine-Anjou breed is on fire, and there is an extensive demand right now for those high-quality genetics. The opportunity for new breeders breaking into the breed and older breeders is great.

4

Get well-represented quality photos and videos of your genetics and get them out there. So many people

picture and video livestock for a living and do a tremendous job; it is well worth your time doing it. These commercial guys and feeders really see the dividends back on using Maine influence genetics on their cows. More pounds and carcass premiums add to the bottom line, and that’s what ranching is all about, making a sound, economical living. When everyone is focused on sustainability and the environment, MaineAnjou cattle, which are known for their feed conversion to pounds and high yielding carcasses, really are relevant for the times we live in. Maine-Anjou is the most sustainable breed! On that note, I’ll touch on a few things. The board and office things are still a bit slow on the turnaround on DNA because of COVID19, so please get them in early. The same goes for registration and transfer; it’s nice to get them in sooner than later. You can always get set up on the new online registration system. And lastly, the AGM will be held in Alberta this year. I look forward to seeing everyone then, as well as out and about at shows and sales! All the best, calving and selling Maine genetics!

CMAA NEWS

Herd Book & Data Services Report Ciara Mattheis Hello from the CMAA office! I hope calving and bull sales have been going well for everyone and that your families have stayed healthy through the winter months. The fall was an exciting time for our breed with Congress hosted in conjunction with Agribition 2021. We had a great turnout and a fantastic group of show animals to represent our breed throughout the shows and sales that week. It was so great to see everyone! The diversity in representation of fullblood and percentage Maine-Anjou cattle and junior members that are just getting started versus members that are approaching retirement from years of involvement with the breed – it was great to be surrounded by all.

MAINE MAIL | VOL. 12 ISSUE 1

We certainly have a fraternity within the Maine-Anjou breed to be proud of! Through the good and the bad

for our members, there is a sense of community that always shines through. This has been demonstrated so clearly in several instances over the past few months and I am so proud to work with every member of this great community. In a world with so many uncertainties, this is a community our members should be proud to be a part of and represent. The Letter for 2022 born animals is K. We look forward to receiving your registrations in the coming months. Please let Ciara, at the office, know if you would like to try entering your calf data yourself rather than on paper in the new ILROnline system. We are working to set up our members so that you will be able to enter data conveniently from your computer at home if desired in the new user-friendly system that will ultimately replace the old online registry.

Paisley Dawn Hansen, of Weldon, SK passed away unexpectedly at the family home on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the age of 8 years old. Although Paisley’s time on earth was not long, her impact was profound and farreaching. From the beginning, she fought to survive and through her courage, she taught values of compassion, acceptance, and respect for differences. Throughout her life, Paisley was surrounded by the love of her family, especially cherished by her Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister. On the farm she got to experience many things, like a kitten sitting on her lap, riding in the tractor, cows mooing in the field, and Coy the family dog always made sure he was looking out for her. Paisley’s brother and sister always loved to spend time with her, making sure she always had toys to play with, snuggling with her on her bed, and complete with a blanket to tuck her in. Paisley is survived by her loving parents Myles and Colleen Hansen; her brother Rhett; her sister Dawsyn; her grandparents Merlene Hansen and Howard and Meridee Robertson; her great grandmother Anna Robertson; her aunts, uncles, and cousins Marilee (Lynne) Taylor (their children Colter and Madelyn), Aaron (Jennifer) Hansen (their children Courtney, Kylee, & Brady), Matthew (Melanie) Robertson (their children Quaid and Brandt), & Erin (Tyler) Libke (their children Dax and Reese). Along with numerous extended family. Paisley was pre-deceased by her grandfather Lorne Hansen; her great grandfather Merle Robertson, who was a part of her life. Along with other great grandparents and extended family. A private family memorial was held. Condolences can be sent to the family on our website at www.mackenziechapel.ca.

ALLEN KENT PITCHER, beloved husband of Donna Pitcher passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Calgary, Alberta on February 21, 2021 at the age of 79.

Southern Alberta breeder passes LYLE TAYLOR on Nov 25, 2021, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 80. Lyle was born in Calgary, grew up on the family farm near Cochrane and lived briefly at Barrhead, before returning to Cochrane.

Kent was born in Cardston, Alberta on May 23, 1941. Kent’s passion was farming. He loved planting crops and calving out cows. He loved the feel of the soil and was a diehard farmer and rancher to the very end. He especially loved his Maine-Anjou cattle. He often commented that they would be the only breed of cattle allowed in heaven.

He made friends easily and developed long friendships in all the areas he participated in, including within the Southern Alberta Maine-Anjou community, the Royal Canadian Legion, Cochrane Curling Club, Cochrane Old-Timers Hockey, and the Brushy Ridge, Jumping Pound and Springbank communities.

A Private Family Service was held on Feb 27, at 2:00 pm. Interment in the Cardston Cemetery.

Great time to be a Maine-Anjou breeder In Australia we are nearing the end of a long summer, and so far, most of the country has experienced unseasonable, but most welcome wet weather. Commercial cattle prices are up and relying on weight for age to increase the profit margin means this is great time to have a herd of Maine-Anjou, or crossbred Maines. With bulls like Maine Park Robert showing weights of 604kgs at 12 months (birth weight 40kgs unassisted), things are looking up for Maine-Anjou breeders. With Maine Park Robert. More commercial cattle producers are now using Maine bulls over their commercial herds.

examples like cattle shown here, more commercial cattle producers are now using Maine bulls over their commercial herds. After all, we’re paid on weight, right? A group of twenty Angus-cross cows calved to the Maine-Anjou (pictured here). Not one birth was assisted. These youngsters grew on to make an average of just over $2200 AU at 8-9 months of age (grass fed). A first-time user of the Maine-Anjou, the producer was cautious and A.I’d only half of his herd to the Maine that year, (Maine Park Black Moocha and Maine Park Black Mamba) he was so impressed with the calves, that he has used a Maine-Anjou bull over his whole herd since.

Home to great bloodlines of fullblood and purebred lineage that quickly link back to France. The red and white herd grazing on the hillside is an invitation to learn more about Gary and Sandy Graham’s commitment to the breed. Gary offered his take on the industry with the following words.

Where did you first discover Maine-Anjou? I first discovered Maine-Anjou cattle when studying cattle breeds from Europe. The Maines caught my eye as they were advertised as the largest breed in France. It was certainly an unusual name, but I did like their size and colour. I bought my first halfbloods in 1970, from Rutledges through Harold Biensch who brought in Cunic and Epinal. These halfbloods were from

Livestock show in France, what are they like? We attended a few cattle shows. What I appreciate about their shows is they are, in my opinion, what a cattle show should be about. It’s not a beauty contest. It’s a cattle breed show where you actually see what an animal really is and what a breed of cattle looks like. The French are proud to take out mature animals, like four and five year old bulls. You definitely see the structure and confirmation along with muscle and breed characteristics; it’s not a fat show like here. Big performance cattle have always played a role in the French shows. This is what we

have lost in North America. Nowadays, you could take the halters off four breeds, including Maines and no one would know what they were looking at. It would be a guess at best. I am not alone here, I’ve talked with commercial guys saying the same thing. North American judges have pushed purebred breeders to believe they have the recipe for the perfect cow. I disagree. I have seen excellent cattle from several breeds outside North America and they do not fit this criteria. Breed characteristics are a good thing, they’re not to be made into one generic type.

Manitou Lake stretches out behind some of the Graham herd.

Recent world events have changed how consumers shop. Many looking to stock up on items have shifted their buying power to local producers. It seems sticker shock isn’t going away any time soon so for savvy steak (and more) shoppers the Shuckburghs at Stettler, AB decided to offer top quality Maine-cross beef. Kevin and Christel, along with their kids, Faith and Cole, had seen quite a few farmers and ranchers selling beef off farm since the rules changed due to a lack of beef in the grocery stores at the beginning of COVID19. Cutting out the middle-man made sense, saved time and customers garnered a far superior product. This began as a family venture, starting with an animal from Faith’s herd, with money raised going to her university fund. Shuckburghs had a lot of interest from former 4-H buyers that were looking to supplement their supply while they waited for the next 4-H sale and Maine-cross beef fit the bill. If the topic of grass-fed versus grain-fed comes up, they have the answer. Shuckburghs educate inquirers on the small differences such as the fact that most of beef is grassfed, 4-H beef being grain-finished for more fat/marbling. The opportunity to teach about agriculture is welcomed by the family. The top seller seems to be sirloin, but consumers want hamburger as well. Customers are coming from as far away as 200 km for Maine-cross beef. Shuckburgh finds marketing is key. He notes it is important to get some out the door, once people taste Maine-cross beef, they love it and will be repeat customers. They often give a package of hamburger to try and shoppers always buy more. Getting people to share how much they loved it is important as well. With BBQ season just around the corner, Shuckburghs are prepping to move more
