BREWING

Clarence E. Pittman was the original manager of the business. He and his wife Annie Sue Pittman obtained sole ownership in 1958. An Edgecombe County native and WWII veteran, Pittman managed the business for 22 years until 1975 when he stepped away for health reasons.

Pittman took great pride in the restaurant’s most noted dish, the famous pit-cooked pork barbecue, which he chopped by hand with a cleaver. The recipe was passed down to Pittman by his grandfather and included only salt, pepper and vinegar. Pittman rose at 4:30am daily to begin preparing and cooking the pigs in an outbuilding in the rear of the restaurant. Annie Sue worked alongside him.

In 2012 the Lincoln Park Historic District was listed

on the National Register of Historic Places. A historical marker on the corner of the 1000 block

of Leggett Road, the site of the restaurant and motel, describes the historical significance of the

neighborhood and the Lincoln Park Restaurant & Motel. The plaque notes, “While the restaurant was

extremely popular with local residents, visitors reputedly traveled from far away regions for servings of the famous pit cooked barbeque.”

Curiosity was the key The work of photographer Eric Brown has increasingly become a source of pride for the Twin Counties. He and his family moved to Rocky Mount in 2020. Originally from Dortches, Brown lived and worked in Nashville, Tennessee for two decades.

While in Tennessee, Brown established a successful career as a photographer. He traveled the world alongside famous musicians, shooting award winning album and magazine covers, documenting recording sessions and concerts and working with some of the biggest names in the industry.

The transition from Nashville, Tennessee to Rocky Mount, North Carolina was a significant change. It brought on the typical stresses inherent in life’s great shifts. Over the last five years Brown has worked to become reacquainted with his roots while adjusting to a different pace of life.

The challenges of the transition back to North Carolina helped inform his latest collection of work. This year he released ITELDÜ (it’ll do). A collection of photographs that expertly capture the essence of Eastern North Carolina and reflect the underlying emotions of the artist himself.

In the preface of ITELDÜ Brown writes, “We knew that if the move here was going to have even a shot at working out, we needed to be curious.” On the surface, compared to Nashville, Tennessee, Rocky Mount can move at a slower pace. “But who wants to experience the surface? We’d need to get out of the house and see with fresh eyes, what all was waiting for us down these quiet roads,” Brown continues in the preface. Curiosity was the key.

Thus, the title was chosen. Whether Brown and his family stayed or whether they eventually left, “it’ll do for now.” This should not be confused with “complacency,” as complacency denotes a state of internal satisfaction void of motivation to progress. ITELDÜ is quite the opposite. The book and the collection of photographs within captures a state of patience, pause and reflection.

Not being complacent, but being present, curious, and appreciating the moment. Taking time to observe and grow before moving on to the next stage. If a next stage should come.

With that in mind, ITELDÜ is not just a photographic collection but a representation of the deeper emotional struggle with which we all deal. Constantly worrying about the next move. Not being present in the day to day.

In today’s world that struggle is amplified. The pressures of society, work, health, family, faith, finances, all weigh like an anvil on one’s figurative chest. They compound with each day’s race. We ironically strive to alleviate those pressures in an endless loop of longing for a time when we can slow down, be present and enjoy what we have.

The future and it’s perceived pressures will always come again, but the present will not. That is unless we are curious and actively embrace the present.

The photographs that comprise ITELDÜ embody the spirit of Eastern North Carolina. Pastoral landscapes, tobacco leaves, warehouses, waterfowl, rivers, and fields. Brown does an amazing job of capturing aging industrial infrastructure, deserted storefronts, and desolate main streets. Images reminiscent of a time when Eastern North Carolina and the industries and small towns that made it famous were at their peaks. Symbols of small town life once wrapped in the comfort of local commerce and trade now wrapped in kudzu. Signs of the passing of time in a rapidly changing world.

Yet at the same time, the underlying beauty that is captured represents the passion and love Eastern North Carolinians feel for this place. That feeling we get when we stop to gaze at an old silo in a tobacco field, now home to a pine tree peeking up through the tin roof. The juxtaposition of the past and present presented in such a way as to remind us just how novel this part of the country is. A novelty that is too often forgotten as we drive past these structures and fields daily. The exotic becomes the everyday.

As Brown noted to TRA+C, “We forgot how to see it, we just look at it.” Maintaining curiosity for the things we see every day is vital. It helps us to slow down, pause, and reflect on how blessed we are to live in this place. Telling yourself, “ITELDÜ,” gives you the permission to be present. An exercise that strengthens the mind, feeds the soul, and prepares us for whatever the next big transition may be.

It has been a decade since the Rocky Mount Mills campus opened. In just ten years, Rocky Mount Mills has come to represent the heartbeat of the local community. A space where locals and visitors alike can share the experience of what makes the city and its residents so unique. People from all walks of life, sharing their crafts, creativity, and enjoying the best of what Rocky Mount has to offer.

Originally founded in 1818 by Joel Battle as a cotton and grist mill, the location has seen multiple wars, two fires that burned it to foundation, economic downturns and the eventual shuttering in 1996. Thanks to the investment and vision of Capitol Broadcasting Company (“Capitol Broadcasting”) and numerous dedicated individuals, the mill is once again humming.

Not with the sound of looms spinning but of people, music, commerce and most importantly community fellowship.

Capitol Broadcasting acquired the 150-acre site in 2007 with a vision to develop the property into a livework-play campus. At the time, Capitol Broadcasting noted in a press release that, “Rocky Mount Mills is an opportunity to transform an abandoned mill not only into a gateway into Rocky Mount but into Eastern NC.”

Construction began around 2014, first to restore the 55 homes of the mill village. A brewery incubator was added and then work began on the mill building itself. In the summer of 2015 life was officially breathed back into the site with the official opening of Rocky Mount Mills.

“What we wanted was to be able to create a place where people considered it their own, and part of the fabric of the community,” Evan Convington Chavez says. Convington Chavez is Director of Government and Community Partnerships for Capitol Broadcasting. She has been a leading part of the mills project since its inception. “The idea behind it being that sense of community and collaboration,” Covington Chavez noted.

Since its opening, the campus has seen significant historical and economic developments. In 2016, Rocky Mount’s first ever craft brewery, Koi Pond Brewing Company, opened on the campus. In 2018, two hundred years after Joel Battle founded the original mill, the mill building itself reopened as apartments as well as the homes in the rehabilitated mill village. A year later, River and Twine hotel opened on campus, featuring twenty boutique tiny houses. The following years saw dozens of restaurants, breweries and other businesses added, growth that continues in 2025.

Key to the success of Rocky Mount Mills was not just the creation of a space where locals could come together, but also the draw it provides for travelers and non-natives alike. When WRAL Reporter Heidi Kirk originally moved to the area just over a year ago, she was inspired by how vibrant the energy was at Rocky Mount Mills and the city itself. Kirk is originally from Nebraska but has lived and worked in several major metropolitan areas.

Kirk says, “There’s an incredible energy here, full of people with big ideas and a deep commitment to shaping their community. It’s been inspiring to witness and be a part of that.” When asked what role Rocky Mills plays in the city, Kirk said in her eyes, “It’s more than just a campus. It’s a space designed to bring people together.

Whether it’s families, professionals, or visitors, the Mills offers a welcoming and inclusive environment. From grabbing coffee or sharing a meal to staying in the tiny homes, it’s a place where everyone feels like they belong.”

That role of fostering connection and community in the city is illustrated by the events regularly hosted at Rocky Mount Mills where locals can come together to enjoy good food, music, fellowship and a sense of being a part of something larger than themselves.

Whether it’s the Music at the Mills series in the Beer Garden, live music at the breweries, or annual events such as Beans and Brews, the campus fosters a sense of connection in the city. One of the most celebrated events at Rocky Mount Mills is the Annual Tower Lighting. The Tower Lighting brings together thousands of locals and travelers alike to celebrate the holiday season with horsedrawn carriage rides, local crafts, live music, and of course pictures with Santa.

For Covington Chavez, the Annual Tower Lighting represents everything that was envisioned when the project began. She says, “That to me [the Annual Tower Lighting] is such a key moment and point of pride and success for us because that was our whole intention, for it to be something that people were proud to call part of their community.”

WRAL Reporter Heidi Kirk shared that sentiment. Kirk notes, the “Tower Lighting is definitely my favorite event. It always draws a great crowd and gives me a chance to connect with people in person. That face-toface interaction is what makes the Mills so special. The Tower Lighting captures that spirit perfectly, and I find myself looking forward to it every year.”

As far as what is in store for the remainder of 2025, Capitol Broadcasting is currently finishing up restoration on the last of the village homes along Falls Road. Once completed it will increase the total number of village homes from 55 to over 60. Notably, Capitol Broadcasting was able to preserve all but one of the village homes. A true testament to the company’s approach to historic preservation.

For the city of Rocky Mount, community connection is integral to the prosperity and longevity of the city.

Having a space that helps foster that connection is a true asset that will continue to help the city and community grow for decades to come.

rits are a staple in most every kitchen across the South. The Tarheel State is no exception.

In Rocky Mount, a local husband and wife duo have been serving up stone ground goodness on a daily basis for the last five years. For Will West and Mary Beers, what began as a hobby for West’s father in retirement, has evolved into a business shipping this Southern staple across the globe.

The Carolina Grits Company is a family run mill located on the banks of the Tar River in Rocky Mount. It was originally founded by West’s father, Ron West, in 2007 as Carolina Grits & Company. At its inception it was more of a passion project and hobby for Ron in his retirement. A former engineer for Consolidated Diesel Company, Ron was drawn to the endeavor from the engineering angle after restoring an old mill. One project led to another, and a small grits company was born.

West and Beers would eventually take over in 2020 and rebrand as Carolina Grits Company (CGC). They had plans to take the company well beyond just a hobby. For them, taking on a new venture was nothing out of the ordinary. Both were accomplished entrepreneurs already, albeit in the music and fashion industry.

They met in Portland Oregon in the early 2000s.

West is originally from Nash County, North Carolina. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill in 2002 he moved to Oregon where he’d live for the next 18 years, establishing a successful career as a songwriter and musician.

A few years after moving to Portland, West met Beers who then was doing wardrobe styling in the film industry. West actually did soundtrack work for a movie Beers was working on at the time. Originally from Montana, Beers is a freelance wardrobe stylist. She’s worked with talents such as the late Chadwick Boseman, Amanda Seyfried and others. Will West and the Friendly Strangers West was simultaneously becoming a fixture in the Northwest music scene. Around 2010 he began building his band, Will West and the Friendly Strangers. He was nominated twice for Best Male Artist by the Portland Music Awards and best Album of the Year for “Take this Moment,” which the band released in 2011.

At the time, West’s father was looking to step away from the grits company he’d founded. So West and Beers stepped in to take over with plans to grow the business. They rented a six-month lease at Rocky Mount Mills in January of 2020. They planned to give themselves those six months to see how much they could grow the company.

West and the band have shared the stage with big names such as The Lumineers, Ryan Montbleau, Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside, Dirty Revival, Scott Pemberton, Cascade Crescendo, The Druthers, Lewi Longmire and more.

West’s first vision was to operate on a bi-coastal basis. He had shows set for the summer of 2020 in Oregon and planned to return to North Carolina each year to run the grits operation. However, with the state of the pandemic that year, their focus shifted. They rebranded the business and launched Carolina Grits Company in April of 2020.

In 2019, West and Beers refurbished a sprinter van. They spent most of the year on the road with an eye toward Eastern North Carolina where West’s parents still lived in Rocky Mount. They didn’t intend to live permanently on the East Coast but thought they would split time between the Northwest and Southeast.

With live concerts and travel essentially on hold, they focused on growing CGC’s business through advertising on Amazon and building up what would become a significant online audience. Over the next few months as restaurants began to open back up, West and Beers began cold calling, dropping off samples, and working to expand the brand as the economy began to come back to life.

The hard work paid off for them. They were soon listed by Amazon as the “hot new product” in grits and quickly climbed the sales ranks. By 2021 they were in the Top 10 in Grits on Amazon and sales growth doubled. By 2022 sales growth doubled again and they were Top 5 on Amazon, now competing with national brands. They are currently Top 3 and “Amazon’s Choice” in grits.

In just five years they are now shipping grits all over North America and as far away as the Middle East, Portugal and even Taiwan. They ship to chefs all over the Southeast and work with restaurants throughout North Carolina.

Locally, their grits are a staple in the line up at Lou Reda’s an American Table, working with local Chef Malik Williams since 2020. In Rocky Mount, locals can find Carolina Grits Company at Smith’s Red & White and Larema Coffee House.

“Nashville Tennessee…I’ve played the Blue Bird, which is really cool…and if I had to pick one on Broadway, they just shut it down and made it Post Malone’s bar, but it used to be Tequila Cowboy. It was like an old Texas roadhouse, it was underneath Jason Aldean’s bar. But Tequila Cowboy had a pink Cadillac above the bar, full car, it was all wood inside, it was neat. But they shut that down and made it Post Malone’s.”

“Miami Vice, and then my favorite show ever is M*A*S*H. I watch a lot of M*A*S*H…it’s so good. I’ve watched it like four times all the way through.”

If you weren’t pursuing music what would your ideal career be?

“Honestly, I’d probably be a truck driver. I have a lot of friends that are…those guys make good money if you play your cards right man, and I’m single, stay on the road all the time. I love music anyway, so I could get paid to drive around and listen to music all day.”

SHRIMP AND GRITS A RECIPIE BY MALIK WILLIAMS

¾ cups Carolina Grit Co. yellow grits 2 cups milk 2 cups water 1.5 tablespoon salt 1.5 teaspoons hot sauce Lemon Juice ¼ cups Heavy Cream 6 tablespoons butter, separated ½ - pound shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 tablespoon salt 2 tablespoons hot sauce 1 teaspoon garlic, minced ¼ cup black strap molasses ½ cup chicken stock In a medium sized pot, bring milk, water and salt, to a rapid simmer. Whisk in the grits and stir constantly, for 20 mins on medium heat.

As the grits expand add cream, lemon juice, and your favorite hot sauce. To finish add in 2 tablespoons butter and check seasoning.

Over time grits will thicken, if needed reserve half cup hot water or milk to loosen.

In a medium size sauté pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter on medium heat. Add garlic, cook till translucent and aromatic, 2 minutes. Add shrimp and season with salt, cook 2mins.

Deglaze the pan with molasses and chicken stock and remove the shrimp to avoid overcooking.

Reduce the sauce with butter and hot sauce till slightly thickened and shiny, 2 minutes.

In a nice dinner bowl, spoon a nice portion of grits in the center of the bowl. Place the shrimp around the base of your grits.

Pour the sauce over shrimp to glaze Garnish with scallions or parsley for some nice color

n the town of Nashville, North Carolina, there is no shortage of local pride. Any given day you can stroll down Washington Street and feel like you’re back in Mayberry.

In just three short years the Junction has come to represent the pride of the community, bringing locals and visitors alike together to celebrate and enjoy the “Original Nashville.”

The town motto of, “The Original Nashville,” shows just how deep local pride goes. A constant reminder that Nashville, North Carolina, is in fact the oldest in the United States, preceding Nashville, Tennessee.

Located at 723 South Barnes Street in Nashville, the old lumberyard and building supply company has been transformed by Hurt and his team over the last few years.

In recent years Nashville has had another reason to take pride with the development of the Nashville Junction (the “Junction”).

The Junction is situated on the former site of Nashville Building and Supply and provides the perfect local venue for community events, commerce and entertainment.

The Junction was a longtime vision of local developer and contractor Michael J. Hurt.

Hurt, who was named as one of the Triangle Business Journal’s “40-Under-40” in 2024, brought years of expertise, experience and passion to the project and has undoubtedly delivered.

The redeveloped site now includes a performing arts pavilion, facilities for the local farmers’ market, and more recently 20,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and business space.

This year renovations on the Junction’s indoor space were completed and the building is now a hive of activity. The first business to open this year was Studio Glam Salon, a chic locally owned beauty salon. Along similar lines, The Art of Fade held their grand opening in June of this year. A longtime dream of owner Alex Puente, The Art of Fade specializes in men’s premium grooming services.

For young creatives, the Junction now features Edge Dance Complex where children can discover the joy of dance and creative expression. For those looking to sharpen their craft skills, Kozy at Home Studio and Boutique in the Junction sells local goods, crafting supplies and offers quilting classes and services. For visitors seeking something sweet, healthy or refreshing while shopping, Nashville Nutrition offers protein shakes, loaded teas and iced coffee.

Soon, the Junction will also welcome two new tenants providing local dining options.

As of this fall, Carlone Provisions will be the newest tenant at the Junction. Founded with a passion for home-cooked Italian meals and the warmth of gathering around the table, Carlone Provisions will bring a taste of Italy to Nashville. Their specialty shop and delicatessen will offer authentic Italian goods, fresh provisions, and delicious lunch options.

Sawmill Pizza Company will also be setting up shop at the Junction soon. Sawmill Pizza Company will be a woodfired pizza restaurant with beers on tap. Visitors will be able to grab a slice of pizza and a beer and go explore the Junction’s outdoor space, which was approved as a social district this year.

The Junction has just as much to offer outside on the campus as inside, with a constant churn of events on the calendar.

This includes the Nashville Farmer’s Market featuring local goods and crafts for sale as well as food trucks and live entertainment every Friday.

Yet the biggest feature of the Junction as far as community engagement is the Junction’s annual New Years Eve Egg Drop. Hosted by Braswell Family Farms, the New Year’s Eve Egg Drop at the Junction features live music, family-friendly activities, food trucks and beverage vendors for an evening of local fellowship and enjoyment.

The festivities are capped off with an early evening New Year’s Eve countdown, another family-friendly feature, followed by a fireworks display.

This year’s Egg Drop will be the third. The first Egg Drop drew a crowd of over 4,000, topped only by the second annual Egg Drop last year with over 6,000 visitors. This year the Junction is anticipating up to 10,000 visitors joining the celebration. The Egg Drop this year will take place on Wednesday, December 31, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Rocky Mount has seen several new restaurants open or announced since the Spring of this year. There have also been several restaurants that have expanded to new locations or have plans to expand their current operations that will add to the city’s culinary offerings.

The Rustler at the Mills opened in September of 2025 at Rocky Mount Mills. The new steakhouse is a project by Travis Milligan, Joshua Barnes and Patrick Mitchell. All three have extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Mitchell was the owner of Silver Lake Restaurant for over a decade and most recently the chef at Beefmastor Inn. The three worked at Beefmastor together for the last 15 years. The Rustler at the Mills will serve a simple steakhouse menu with high end meat at an affordable price. Diners can choose between a ribeye and filet, coupled with a baked potato and an endless salad bar.

River Walk Coffee Co opened at Rocky Mount Mills at the site of the former Books & Beans coffee shop. River Walk Coffee Co has standard coffee options, specialty coffees and non-coffee beverages including chai lattes, frappes and smoothies.
