The Hard Hat News - January 2025

Page 1

In a year of change and uncertainty, I am so thankful to share that T.W. Frierson’s Core Purpose remained as steady and active as ever. In fact, “creating a foundation for people to thrive” has drawn upon its strong roots and reached further into lives than ever before. If faith without deeds is dead, then the good people at T.W. Frierson are very much alive in “creating a foundation for people to thrive!”

Earlier this fall, leaders of the organization gathered to envision the future for employee-owners at T.W. Frierson and to carefully plan the execution of our next strategic plan. Confidently drawing upon TWF’s stellar reputation and leveraging the skills of so many team members, the team developed the most rigorous and ambitious strategic plan in company history. While centered on eclipsing our goal of at least 40 ESOP Millionaires by 2040 with reasonable but aggressive financial targets, I am proud to report that the plan is equally as focused on enhancing the experience of every individual associated with a T.W. Frierson project, client, trade partner, craft labor, engineer, neighbor, and so on. With the addition of a sabbatical program and chaplaincy to combat burnout and mental health struggles, T.W. Frierson has taken steps to be the leader in thought and practice for employee care.

In truth though, we all know the culture of the organization is best manifested in the small, perhaps unexpected, moments every day. For instance, in early December, we welcomed 34 retirees and guests together for the Annual Retiree luncheon. The room was filled with hugs, laughter, and the retelling of so many memories. At one point, a former field leader with over 35 years with the company leaned over and whispered in my ear “every company doesn’t do this.”

T.W. Frierson is delighted to partner with The Church of the City to construct The Village on their campus. Not an addition to their operation, the Village is a home and incubator for the multitude of social services to support the foster care crisis plaguing our community. Of the dozens of non-profits supported by The Village, one connects single-mothers exiting the foster care system with donated vehicles so they are able to work and provide for their young families. At our Employee Celebration in November, we were so thrilled to donate a vehicle from the company fleet to this worthy non-profit, and several weeks later, I joined their team as they formally “revealed” the vehicle to the recipient. A single mother of three working at Preston Taylor Ministries in North Nashville, Nicole was overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude as she accepted the keys and climbed into the car, which she called hers for the first time. As we were celebrating together on that cold December day, Nicole hugged me, looked me in the eye, and told me “You do not know what this means.”

We cannot possibly know everything that it means to Nicole, but I am confident in one thing. Through its excellent reputation, commitment to core values always doing what is right, and the incredible heart of so many team members, T.W. Frierson is on the move advancing its mission. With endless thanks to the retirees for laying the foundation, to clients and trade partners for their trust, and to all employee-owners currently pressing hard toward our goals, I am filled with excitement for the future!

PROLOGIS CITY VIEW HOSTS

EDUCATIONAL TOURS, SAFETY EVENTS & INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT

Our jobsite at Prologis has been a hub of activity, showcasing the commitment and professionalism of our team. On October 1st, we successfully hosted two events on-site in one day. Over 30 master’s students from Arizona State University’s real estate program joined us for an educational tour, thanks to Superintendent Griffin Jones, who skillfully escorted a Greyhound bus through the job site.

While the students were on site we simultaneously held our second safety event for this project. During this time we celebrated various safety achievements and awarded many team members with certificates of excellence for their commitment to safety. T.W. Frierson is proud to be dedicated to the safety of our field teams and events like this allow us to take time out of our day to spotlight the importance of prioritizing safe work.

Additionally, in early December, we welcomed BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) for a tour and discussion about the project’s progress. During this event, TWF Project Manager Hope Garbacz spoke about our role in the project, providing insight into our construction processes. These experiences emphasize T.W. Frierson’s commitment to safety, education, and fostering relationships within the industry.

SUPPORTS TRACY LAWRENCE’S 19TH ANNUAL MISSION: POSSIBLE TURKEY FRY

T.W. Frierson had the honor of sponsoring the 19th Annual Mission: Possible Turkey Fry, an incredible event dedicated to raising support and awareness for those experiencing homelessness in Middle Tennessee and beyond. For the fourth consecutive year, we were thrilled to be part of this impactful tradition, which brought together volunteers to fry 1,600 turkeys, helping to feed the homeless and hungry. It was a heartwarming way to kick off the holiday season and make a tangible difference in our community.

Founded by country music artist Tracy Lawrence in 2006, Mission: Possible began with the Turkey Fry as its flagship fundraiser. Since its launch, the organization has fried over 6,400 turkeys, raised more than $600,000 for the Nashville Rescue Mission, and provided over 90,000 meals to those in need. In 2021, Mission: Possible expanded its reach with the Mission: Possible Celebrity Golf Classic, a spring event that has already raised over $800,000. Between these two events and additional contributions, Mission: Possible has raised over $2 million to fight homelessness, fulfilling its mission and advocating for this critical cause.

At T.W. Frierson, we are inspired by Mission: Possible’s unwavering commitment to helping those in need. Events like the Turkey Fry remind us of the power of community and the importance of giving back, especially during the holiday season.

A huge thank you to Tracy Lawrence, the Mission: Possible team, and all the volunteers who made this year’s Turkey Fry such a success. Here’s to continuing this tradition, spreading hope, and supporting those in need across Middle Tennessee.

Gallatin Department of Electricity

We’re honored to continue our longstanding partnership with Brentwood United Methodist Church (BUMC) as we work on multiple projects, including a complete renovation of their sanctuary—a space our team originally built in 1989.

We recently wrapped up Phase 1, which involved the partial interior demolition and renovation of approximately 9,230 square feet of administrative, classroom, and other spaces adjacent to the existing Chapel. This phase included the installation of a new mechanical system, LED lighting, a light hazard fire sprinkler system, limited structural improvements, and significant interior finish upgrades.

We’re thrilled to announce that our creation won the People’s Choice Award, a testament to the hard work and imagination of our talented team.

INSTALLATION EXCELLENCE AT NES CENTRAL SUBSTATION

"The complexity of integrating curved girts and architectural panels into the precast wall sections makes this particularly demanding," says the project manager. "This intricate design requires precise coordination and innovative engineering solutions to ensure seamless integration and maintain structural integrity."

The NES Central Substation project in downtown Nashville is a testament to precision and craftsmanship, with Design Systems Builders, LLC (DSB) completing the installation of intricate metal wall panels as part of the construction. These panels combine functionality and aesthetics, playing a vital role in the substation’s modernized design.

Spanning approximately 10,000 square feet, the 18-gauge perforated aluminum panels feature a mix of straight and radius designs, arranged in a custom four-width pattern. The installation required custom curved steel secondaries to seamlessly align with pre-cast concrete elements, ensuring a flawless fit and finish.

The panels serve multiple purposes, including installations over folding access doors and entryway soffits integrated with lighting. These details highlight DSB’s dedication to blending design innovation with structural integrity.

The Central Substation project is vital to NES’s strategic vision, enhancing power distribution efficiency and reliability for a third of the downtown core business district. The new facility will include cutting-edge infrastructure such as 13.8 kV arc-resistant indoor switchgear and high-capacity power transformers, all while keeping the original 1914 substation active during construction.

On November 7, 2024 the TWF Shop hosted our Annual Employee Celebration. This family reunion style event is the one time a year that every employee-owner gathers to enjoy a meal, engage in fellowship with one another, receive company updates, and recognize our service award recipients and 100% ESOP vested employee-owners. This year, we were proud to support Church of The City with donations for their foster care programs and a vehicle for their support of single mothers.

Congratulations to our employee owners who became fully vested in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan this year!

T.W. Frierson is proud to have over half of our employees fully vested as owners through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This milestone represents our commitment to creating a workplace where everyone has a stake in our shared success. At TWF, we believe that ownership drives dedication, and we’re excited to continue building a strong future together.

In 2024, T.W. Frierson achieved Platinum certification in the Associated Builders and Contractor’s STEP Safety Management System. Founded more than three decades ago, STEP is a world-class safety program that dramatically improves safety performance among construction industry participants.

According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, STEP participants, regardless of company size or type of work, can reduce recordable incidents up to 84%, making the best performing companies more than eight times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average. Ratings range from Diamond, the highest, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participant.

We’re excited to announce that we have again been named an Accredited Quality Contractor by Associated Builders and Contractors, the 4th year TWF has earned the prestigious credential for its commitment to corporate responsibility. “To be a part of the magic of a holiday for a child is why I am involved with Helping Hands. This is my second year as a partner, and recruiting people to help has been a blast. Seeing all the creative trees and imagining a child getting to pick one of them for their room is heart-warming. If you want to experience the true meaning of the holiday - get involved in this event!”

DCI IS A FEATURED PARTNER FOR HELPING HANDS!

At DCi, we believe in the power of community and the joy of giving back, especially during the holiday season. That’s why we are proud to sponsor the Helping Hands initiative in Nashville, a program dedicated to bringing smiles and hope to children and their families spending the holidays in pediatric hospitals.

Helping Hands creates a magical experience by providing beautifully decorated, themed trees for hospital rooms. These trees—designed by talented community members— feature everything from beloved children’s movie characters to superheroes, princesses, and pop stars, ensuring every child finds one that lights up their world.

This initiative is about so much more than decorations. It’s about lifting spirits and creating moments of joy for families facing challenging circumstances. Watching a child’s face light up as they choose a tree that fits their personality is truly heartwarming, and seeing the joy it brings to parents, caregivers, and hospital staff reminds us all of the true meaning of the season.

We’re honored to sponsor this incredible program in Nashville and to be part of the impactful work Helping Hands is doing across the country. Together, we can bring a little extra holiday magic to those who need it most.

We’d like to give a huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Yazoo Brewery to celebrate 30 years of DCi! It was an unforgettable night filled with great conversations, laughter, and memories that remind us of how far we've come and the amazing people who have been part of this journey.
