Honey out of the Rock “The work in this exhibition has been made during the last twelve months and represents a conversation between the landscape, paint and other materials, and myself. I try to convey truthful emotion in my work, a spark of something which speaks to me of the land, of the paint I’ve used, of the way I feel. Some motifs which repeat in my work are intentional, certain skylines and geographical places that are close to my heart and to my home in Shropshire. Other aspects of my work - the way that charcoal scrapes through paint, the sense of land illuminated under a dark sky, the feeling of pattern and balance undergirding the landscape, assert themselves. I work outside, in all seasons. Its a practice which supplies me with the drawings and memories that become the basis for my larger studio paintings. “Honey out of the rock” is a phrase I recently came across in Psalm 81, and it seemed an apt title for an exhibition of paintings around themes of land, quartzite, pollen. It also seemed an apt description of the process of painting itself for me, over the last year.”
