Takes: 10 min Serves: 2
• 40g SPAR butter
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 punnet mushrooms, chopped
• 4 slices of crusty bread or sourdough

2 Toast the bread in a toaster or under the grill, then transfer to the pan and fry for 2 mins, letting it soak up any residual garlic butter, then place on plates. For (optional) extra indulgence, smear the toast with cream cheese before piling on the mushrooms, Parmigiano Reggiano and a little fresh thyme.

• The tradition of decorating eggs comes from Ukraine, where it started as way to honour the gods of health and fertility.
• The largest ever chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in 2011 – it stood 10.4 metres high and weighed 7,200kg - that’s taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant!

Blitz a handful of SPAR almonds in a blender (or chop finely) and stir into the mix along with 5 tbsp SPAR olive oil and a handful of SPAR Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve with your favourite SPAR pasta, or store in a jar in the fridge for up to 4 days. Delicious slathered on rye crispbread with SPAR cream cheese.

Pour the cheese sauce evenly over the top, then bake in the oven at 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6 for 30 mins until bubbling and browned. Amazing served with juicy gammon or roast chicken.

Soak up spring in this lovely 140-acre park for places to play, walk, run and potter - and that applies to dogs just as much as humans! From the car park you can wander straight into the park, choosing from lots of different trails, through community allotments and pretty wooded areas, towards the scenic lake that’s a wetland habitat for invertebrates, fish and birds. As well as outdoor gym equipment, kids’ play areas, dog agility trails and a visitor centre and café, there’s plenty of open green space if you just fancy a spring picnic amidst the birdsong.

1. Daffodils! The first real splash of colour after a dull winter.
2. Hibernation: in the UK, hedgehogs, dormice and bats hibernate – so at this time of year (best seen in the evening) they’re starting to come out again – keep your eyes peeled!
3. The dawn chorus: the wonderful sound of early morning birdsong is a heart-cheering reminder that summer is coming. Keep your ears out for the call of the cuckoo, a migratory bird that arrives back from Africa at this time.
4. Pond spawn: Head to the natural ponds and lake and see if you can spot frog spawn (which appears in clumps) and toad spawn (which appears in long chains).
5. Rabbits, hares, bees and butterflies: Spot rabbits frolicking in the fields, and female hares ‘boxing’ to fend off over-enthusiastic males. Queen bees are coming out of hibernation at this point too, and the first butterflies of the year are also taking to the skies
6. Wild garlic: A carpet of green and white, in spring the unmistakeable scent of wild garlic can be found mostly in woodlands that are old (listen out for woodpeckers too!)
At SPAR, we’re committed to giving back to the communities we serve, which is why we support sports teams and events that truly make a difference to our neighbourhoods. And what better way to do that than through food? Last year we provided thousands of tasty breakfasts and packed lunches to people participating in the Riverside Cricket Festival, the Leicester Tigers U10 matches and the Welsh Athletics’ Summer Camps. It’s been a privilege to be part of their sporting journeys - and we look forward to continuing our support in 2025.
We’re thrilled to be partnering with Leicester Tigers rugby club. From serving up sausage sarnies to U10s, to providing breakfast for 2800 participants last autumn, lunch for primary school multi-sports camps in Leicester, sweets for clubs to sell, and prizes for multiple events, we loved helping Leicester Tigers with all sorts of enterprises last year. In the run-up to Christmas we also supported a Christmas party the club held in conjunction with Leicester City Council for underprivileged children. We look forward to continuing these heart-warming initiatives into this summer and beyond.

As partners with Glamorgan Cricket club, we’re proud to sponsor the team’s shirts, and work with them to grow cricket in Wales. Last summer we collaborated on various community engagement activities and skills camps, and this will continue this summer.
“We are delighted to welcome A.F. Blakemore and SPAR to the Glamorgan Cricket family as an official partner,” said Ed Rice Glamorgan Cricket Head of Commercial. “They are a business which shares our community values and we’re looking forward to working closely with them.”

With thousands of athletes and spectators in attendance, this brilliant cross-country event (the UK’s only World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold Label race) featured thrilling races across all age groups, from grassroots competitors to elite international athletes. We provided goodie bags to junior podium finishers, as well as SPAR vouchers at the merchandise and registration tents. Well ran!

In partnership with Disability Sport Wales (DSW) since 2019, we’re proud to be at the forefront of promoting inclusivity in sports by helping them deliver the annual insport Series events across Wales. These events enable thousands of disabled people of all ages to try out a range of sports in their local communities - and their success depends on the enthusiasm, dedication, and energy of a vital yet often unsung group: the volunteers.
The insport Series events are designed to be fully inclusive, giving disabled people the chance to discover hidden talent, gain confidence or simply have fun in sport. Each event
is hosted in collaboration with local inclusive sports clubs and National Governing Bodies.
Recognising the pivotal role that volunteers and coaches play in them, DSW has partnered with SPAR to enhance the volunteer experience. As the official food and refreshments provider for the insport Series, we ensure that those giving their time and energy are wellfed and hydrated throughout the events by providing nutritious snacks and drinks.
“SPAR’s involvement has been transformative. Their support ensures that our volunteers and coaches feel valued and cared for. By providing the essentials they need to keep going, SPAR is not just fueling their energy but also

their enthusiasm. This partnership underlines the importance of community in making inclusive sport a reality,” says Nia Jones, Project Manager at DSW.
If you see an insport Series event in action, take a moment to appreciate the fabulous volunteers and the network of support behind them. It’s their dedication that makes these events a triumph of inclusion and opportunity.
