KENTUCK FESTIVAL FEAST FOR THE EYES -Mike Woodard Kentuck was the original name for Northport Alabama. Imagine today saying…”I live in Kentuck”. Each year a fantastic event occurs in Kentuck, err, Northport, at the Kentuck Park out towards the Tuscaloosa Airport. A group of artisans and musicians present their works for public viewing (and purchasing) in a grand festival. This year’s version will feature around 300 craftsmen and is expected to draw around 30,000 visitors. The opportunity to stroll about watching these artisans create their crafts is, for some, about as good as life

gets.

I’ve been to many Kentuck, and you’ll probably see me at this one. And I’ve always been struck with how it reminds me of the ole days. Back before automated machines created our goods, and the hands of man touched all that we wore, used in our homes and businesses, and entertained ourselves with. You will see the results that can be obtained by hands and eyes trained over years of study...there is art in life. But it a chair, a coat, a what not, a

fiddle, a hat, a belt...you name it, and someone has figured how to make it creatively. Kentuck is a feast for the sensations. You don’t really have to buy as you have to experience it. It’s a great environment for kids to see these people who have devoted themselves to creation. It’s an inspiration! There will be training sessions for children too! The Tuscaloosa Symphony will conduct a “Musical Petting Zoo” where children can pluck or blow into various

instruments. It’s certainly a family event. It’s a culinary surprise as well. There’ll be lot’s of original recipes for tasting. Musical events include: October 18, 11:00 am Afrissippi, 12:30 pm Willie Sunny Boy King, 2:00 pm Guthrie & Martin, 3:30 pm Panorama Jazz Band October 19, 11:00 am Hooley, 12:30 pm, The Figs, 2:00 pm Ruthie Foster. There’s a reason Northport has been named one of “100 Best Small Arts Towns In America”...and it’s Kentuck. Hope to see you there this weekend.

Ole Miss. Tuscaloosa. Game seven. Oh boy! This should be a doozey. Makes it great to be from Tuscaloosa. The quad will be full. Some mighty nice folks from Oxford, MS are visiting. I hope they go home happy they came to Tuscaloosa….but not with a victory. Yet, there is more than just football this weekend. If you’re a handicraft type person there’s the Kentuck Festival in Northport. Open air fun, food, music, and all the hand made crafts you can shake a stick at. It’s worth the price of admission just to look around. There’ll be lot’s of folks in town this weekend and that’s good for our local economy. There’s a lot of talk about the economy being down...and I see that the stock market is...but we have so much activity going on here I think we can afford to forget about our troubles for the weekend. One very bright spot in the economy this week is the drastic reduction in gasoline prices. Heck, I might even be able to crank up the old Enola Gay (my F-150 pickup) here directly. There’ll be nothing better for the economy than for people to feel like they can afford to get out and about again. Of course, I recommend setting your sights on a new, or newer at least, gas saver vehicle as soon as you can because you never know when the prices will go back up and by how much. I enjoyed my visit to Fayetteville, NC this week. Our Kidsville Literacy Initiative now has the backing of the Our Kids Can Read Foundation. I was up there for a training session on that. It’s a good thing! Not as many people feeling charitable these days, with all the bad economic news on TV, but the charities still need funding. We’ll go about finding the funding to start providing the Kidsville literacy publication for the children in the poor rural counties around Tuscaloosa like Hale, Fayette, and Greene. There’s a lot of work to do out there in those rural counties, and Our Kids Can Read may be just what the doctor ordered. The United Way annual fund raising drive has cranked up. So don’t forget to help those less fortunate than you and those who are trying to do good things for others through their charities with your donation. Lot’s of people stirred up about this coming election. And the last 30 days or so are pretty rough in the national elections in the last month these days. I guess elections always were ugly around the end. But, thankfully, this too shall pass. So folks are worried about their retirement funds with the stock market going down...but if you just don’t look at the statement you’ll be surprised how little it matters. And one day in the future you’ll look at it, and low and behold, it’ll be back up where it was. I just remind everybody...when you get about five years away from your retirement ole Mike suggests that you take your money out of the stock market and transfer it into regular old interest bearing bank accounts and CD’s that are insured now up to $250,000. Remember, between now and retirement and always. Buy low, and sell high! It’s a glorious fall in Tuscaloosa Alabama. Man what a town. Enjoy this weather, the Bama game (Roll Tide!), Kentuck, and every day of life. Mike Woodard Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun & Shopper

Women and Menopause: Spotting the first signs

Menopause is an essential part of all women's lives. Women and menopause cannot be taken apart. Women face many complications during this process which are determined by several internal and external factors. Menopause is defined as that period in a woman's life when she losses her power to reproduce due to the discontinuation of her menstrual cycle. In fact, the word literally stands for the termination of the monthly cycle, having its origin in the Greek words meno and pausis, which means month and halt respectively. Humans and mammals go through the same process. Menopause is a part of the natural process of a woman's life. This phenomenon occurs with age as the ovaries slowly become unproductive, generating lower quantity of hormones-estrogen and progesterone. This takes away a woman's power to become pregnant. The average age for menopause varies from woman to woman. In some women, it can happen prematurely around the mid-thirties and in some it can get delayed till the age of sixty. The average age for this process to start is roughly around fifty-two. If you do not have periods for an entire year, then you can say that you have had menopause. Women and menopause cannot be differentiated and this process cannot be considered as a medical problem like an illness or a disease. It is a natural process which every woman goes through. Nevertheless, some women have a hard time during the process. As mentioned earlier that the time for menopause varies from person to person influenced by various physical factors. Menopause occurring below the age of forty is known as premature menopause. Premature menopause can also happen as a result of medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This can be very depressing for those who plan to have children late in life. There are many symptoms of menopause but it also differs from person to person. Few women have only moderate symptoms while others might have severe symptoms: Menstrual irregularities: The most glaring sign is the irregularity of the menstrual cycle or the change in the density of the blood. Night sweats: A sensation of heat spreading throughout the body from chest to the face, accompanied by nausea and sweating is called night sweats. They last for about thirty seconds to five minutes. Alcohol, anxiety and hot spicy food can exacerbate these feelings. Sleep disturbances: Night sweats are the primary reason for sleep disturbances. Women try to adjust their clothes according to their body temperature which causes a disturbance during sleep. This can result in sleepless night for many. Urinary problems: Infection in the urinary tract as a result of menopause is very common. The symptoms for this disease include frequent urination and a strong odor in the urine. Joint and muscle aches: Morning stiffness accompanied with joint pains in the knees and shoulder is very common during menopause. Most of these above mentioned symptoms goes away at the end of this process. However, there are many factors that influence women and menopause like lifestyle, genetics, diet and social and natural factors surrounding them.

Having your second child is an exciting time, however it can also be stressful for your first child, who suddenly goes from being your one and only child, to a big brother or sister. Whether your only child is 2 or 10 there will be an adjustment period for him or her. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do as parents to help prepare them for their new role. Here are just a few ideas: Big brothers and big sisters are special. Speak in positive terms to them about what it means to be a big sis or big brother. Really play up their new found role and help them to feel special and needed. You will want to discuss how they can be your helper and how much the baby will need them. You may want to assign them a specific task, something age appropriate. For a younger child, fetching diapers for you might be a good one. Help your child to appreciate how much you need their help. At the same time, don't go overboard and talk about the baby too much. Your older child is unique and needs to understand that your love for him is secure. Don't plan any other major changes. This would not be a good time to introduce any other major changes into their life, such as potty training, different sleeping arrangements or any other similar changes. You don't want to overwhelm them nor add any added stress to their lives or yours. If your toddler is still nursing, there is no reason to stop during your pregnancy or even afterwards when the new baby arrives. Many moms have found that tandem nursing (breastfeeding siblings who are not twins) is very rewarding and a wonderful way to ease the transition for the older child. When they are assured of your place in their lap, they are not as likely to be jealous or resent the new baby. Talk to them. Children understand more than we think. So, spend some time talking with them about the big event. You can tell them about what will happen when you go to have the baby, where they will be staying, and what they can expect. If you are having the baby at home or in a birthing center, you might want to consider allowing them to be with you at the birth. Children who are close by the mother during her labor are more likely to view the new baby as "ours" instead of an alien intruder! Some parents have found it helpful to read books that talk about getting a new baby in the house. These often explain how new babies need constant care and feeding. Get help. Going from one to two (or two to three, and on and on!) is a wonderful time to ask friends, family, Grandparents and others for a little help. While you and the baby are resting, could someone play with your toddler, arrange a playdate or take them to the park for a couple of hours? A little extra one on one time with a beloved adult can make up for the fact that you are going to be giving the toddler a little less attention for awhile. This is a time for Dad to step up too. While he does need time to bond with the newborn, this can be a time of growth in the older child as he embraces Dad as someone who can also meet his needs. Watch your language. When the baby arrives, be careful how you phrase things. If your older child asks you for something and you can't help them because you're caring for the baby, don't "blame" it on the baby. Say something like, "My hands are busy now, but I can play with you in a few minutes. Why don't you come snuggle next to me and I'll read you a story?" Another tip that some moms have found helpful is to talk up the older child to the baby. We moms love to go ga-ga over our babies, but why not brag on the older sibling? "Ooh look at what big brother is doing! He's building a block tower and it's sooooo tall!" This can make the older child's heart swell with pride. Don't feel guilty. It's very common for moms to feel guilty about displacing their older child, but children have been dealing with the arrival of siblings since the beginning of time! They will be just fine, and will gain a playmate and perhaps a lifelong friend. Be positive about the transition and your child will likely pick up on your emotions.

Living on the border of three states has its advantages. I often tell folks I get to hunt in three states and never leave home. I do, however, have to buy two nonresident licenses. And that ain’t good. Another inconvenience is keeping up with all the diverse seasons and when each starts. Each of these states begins their deer season at different times. And while one may allow a muzzleloader, the others may be archery only. And then there’s the harvest limits. It’s all a small price to pay, but it is awkward at times. It’s really all about the law. I can truly understand how at times, someone can make an honest mistake. But I’m sure the game wardens are not interested in our sincerity. There are laws and it’s our job as hunters and fisherman to know them because they are the standard by which each one of us will either be innocent or guilty. Game and fish laws are not too burdensome. Each state’s requirements fit nicely into a small magazine type book, unlike for instance, tax laws that fit nicely into a Volkswagen Beetle. Our society is one of laws. Our relationship with God is not even though many individuals and churches have made it that way. I used to think that if I did the things that I was supposed to do, and didn’t do the things I was not supposed to do, I would have a right relationship with the Lord. I thought it was all about me DOING things. I realized one day that there was no relationship in that. With that, I am nothing more than a person trying to keep more laws. The Bible says that Jesus fulfilled the law. That means He met every requirement and then closed the book on them. His relationship with me now, would be one of grace and thus freedom. I could not keep the laws, so He paid the price for my guilt, done away with the law, and set me free. But does my freedom give me license to act any way I want to? No, but my relationship now is one of “want to” and no longer one of “ought to.” Think of it this way. If, when I got married, I gave my wife a list of rules, and said, “Teresa, I love you so much and I know you love me, so I’m going to ask you to do some things. Each morning I want you to fix my breakfast when I get up. I would like you at, ten o’clock, to go tell someone how great of a husband I am. I also don’t want you to have too much fun, because after all this marriage thing is serious stuff. At least three times each week I want you to come to certain place. I’ll tell you what time I want you to be there. And please put on a happy face when you get there. I need you to give me part of your paycheck each month as well. And by the way Honey, I love you.” My friend, that’s not a relationship, that’s a business agreement! And perhaps the reason that you have never given the Lord a try, is because someone told you, you have to keep more laws. Jesus put it this way, “He, whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.” Free to have a real family relationship, as a son or daughter to a loving, caring, and accepting Heavenly Father.

What is our austerity, when there is Christ, What is want, even hunger or deprivation, What burden God’s call to selfless sacrifice; Where is the pinch throughout the Nation, What does it matter, when there is Christ? It matters, little, no, it matters none at all, Our collective lessening of material wealth, What, then, if all our earthly treasures fall, When we have God, family, freedom, health; So then answer we the Master’s service call. Do we not have wealth measured in eternity, Treasures scales cannot balance in gold, The blessings of peace, love, salvation, we, Carry and are carried by, resolute and bold, Knowing as with our God always we will be? Father, we thank you for abundant blessings, Many the world cannot see or understand, As we humbly bow before you, confessing, How we have failed to heed your commands; Forgive us, healing by Christ’s intercessing. So then, what austerity, when we have Jesus, Where is our want, hunger or deprivation, In light of knowing the Lord God will lead us, Knowing we rest securely in His salvation, What hardships matter when there is Jesus? Yours in Christ,

Tom

World Watch with Mike Woodard

My Dad once told me that “A house is not an “investment”, it’s a roof over your head. I think a lot of folks got that wrong over the past few years. They built houses as “investments” to finance for other people, or an mansions thinking they’d go up in value by tens of thousands of dollars per year. But, Dad was right. A house is a place to hand you hat. A house is a place to make your home. The “subprime” market crash has been blamed on people forcing banks to make loans to people without credit, it’s been blamed on Wall Street bankers, it’s been blamed on Republicans by Democrats and Democrats by Republicans, it’s been blamed on a lot of things...but I know what cause the whole mess. Everyone had bought into the idea that a home was an “investment”, and a darn good one at that. Everyone thought a house was an investment that would ALWAYS go up in value. But, low and behold, we find out what my Dad said was right all along. People need houses...not to “flip”, or to “turn over”, or to “speculate” with. People need houses to have a roof over their heads. The folks that need houses are the people who can afford to pay for them. That’s because the investment is not the house...it’s the people buying the house. Boy, is America learning a hard lesson in economics or what? Shamefully, some folks in New York, on Wall Street packaged those slimy loans, after they realized they were going to blow up in their face, and sold them to unwitting investors around the world. Our government, asleep at the switch (boy that can cause a mighty powerful train wreck), didn’t notice a thing. Now those folks in Europe, Iceland, Japan, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia...well, all over the globe, they’ve gotten a bad shake from the US economy. They aren’t going to loan us any more money for a while...and when they do, they’ll want double proof of real good collateral. That means they want to see a person with real good credit is the one having the money loaned to them. Nope, the world isn’t going to loan us money, our population is running short on cash, and the government is going to need trillions, that’s with a T, to cover the fall out of banks, state governments, industries, and people for houses and unemployment checks. Our federal government is, if you forget, just as broke as a haint. They haven’t save a nickel since Clinton was president...and far worse went into debt enough to make our government the largest debtor nation in the world...that’s before this all happened. So where is our government going to get the money? They are going to print it folks. Well, they’ll add some zeros to their bank account anyway. Look out inflation…because, here it comes. At first it won’t be so bad….because everybody needs money...but then. Katie bar the door.

TALLADEGA RACE GREAT THIS WEEKEND MARTINSVILLE Oh Boy...we had a ball at the Talladega race. This week is the Martinsville Quik Pak 500. Sunday at 12:45 Gotta tell ya. Talladega was everything I’d every hope of. Cautions, wrecks, 200 mph laps, a record number of lead changes...lot’s of high profile leaders knocked completely out of the race...and then a photo, controversial (kinda) finish with Tony Stewart winning the pennant. Honestly, that was as good as it gets for a NASCAR fan. We had Turn 4 pass wrist bands...and we were walkin tall! This cup race has gone plumb crazy. I don’t know who’s going to win it with all this going on. Races like Talladega’s and the

three before it, just shake up the bottle and fizz goes everywhere. I think anybodies guess is as good as the other if the races continue freakin’ like this. However, Jimmy Johnson, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle are in 1, 2, 3 for the cup. So, Jimmy still has his eyes on the triple crown. I like Jimmy. He’s a great racer. He’s always strong on the cup side of the schedule. But with things as they are, with races tossing drivers around like this...Tony, Clint or Jeff Burton could pull a surprise. But, I think that was it for Earnhart, Gordon, and Busch. I just don’t see them coming back in time now. That Talladega...what a race. That was simply as good as it gets.

AUBURN HAS NO OFFENSE, TO MEET WEST VA OK I was wrong. Vandy beat Auburn. I picked Auburn to win by 7. Then Tuberville checked his offensive coordinator. Who’d of thunk that!? And then Arkansas beat them!. Arkansas ain’t got nothing!

how many games was Joe Kines Alabama’s head coach? A: 1,

right after Mike Shula was fired as head coach.

Q: For

Auburn, at least, has a world class defense. Now Auburn meets West Virginia. My pick: Auburn 17, West Virginia 7. Oh, Auburn’s offense might just surprise us this week! Don’t ever count out the Mississippi Riverboat Gambler.

OCTOBER West Alabama Gardening With Candy Taylor - Trees. Everybody loved the color changes of the leaves in the fall. It’ a good time to see what your trees look like in the color change to see what other trees and colors you could add to your yard or forest to enjoy even more colors. Maples and gums are typical eye openers with their impressive display. It’s a great time to plant trees, except for evergreens, and you can plant for a variety of reasons. Where do you need shade, which areas are open and need new growth, which areas have diseased or dying trees and need a new generation understory to fill the gag when that tree dies? And, of course, where do you want fall color and which colors to you want to create the perfectly beautiful fall display? Don’t be surprised if your ever greens start shedding needles this time of year...that’s normal this time of year. You may notice that many of your trees have developed holes and cracks. Once it was thought that you needed to fill these gaps to protect the tree...but now it is known that trees created covers themselves and compartmentalize damaged areas. Check out the fall colors of Ginkgo, Red Maple, Japanese Maple, Crapemyrtles, Black Gum, Sweet Gum, or Chinese Pistache for your color variety.
