ACCS interim chancellor looks to retrain laid off employees for future careers in the ACCS By Mike Woodard

mike@tuscaloosa-shopper.com

Dr. Joan Davis, Interim Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System, sees a great opportunity to retrain laid off workers and prepare them for new jobs in Alabama’s community college system. Dr. Davis spoke in Tuscaloosa this week about where the community college system is and where it’s going. “Pro-ration has cut our revenues by 9%, and next year it’s going to be worse, but we are making a lot of progress.” That progress is coming in several forms. First, there are more high school students taking classes at 2 year colleges, like Shelton State, and are leaving high school prepared to go directly into the work force, or are better prepared to continue on with a college degree. Second, there are more workers being re-trained than ever before. Working with industries in and outside of Alabama who need workers trained with particular skills. Third, there are returning veterans who are being retrained to prepare them for their post military career occupations. Fourth, there are more adults and high school drop outs obtaining their GED’s through 2

UA prof ’s new book tells tale of Chief Tuscalusa By Mike Woodard mike@tuscaloosa-shopper.com A new book edited by a UA professor outlines an interdisciplinary approach to locate the site where Hernando De Soto’s army battled Chief Tascalusa’s warriors. Since the 1540 battle, a host of people have placed dots on maps and declared them as representations of where the 469-year-old fight occurred. None have stood the test of time and science. “One can rightfully say that the lost battle site of Mabila is the predominant historical mystery of the Deep South,” writes Dr. Jim Knight in an introduction to “The Search for Mabila,” published earlier this year by The University of Alabama Press. The 277-page book draws from 15 direct contributors

with expertise in anthropology, archaeology, geology, geography or history. Onethird of the contributors are current or former UA faculty members. The book doesn’t pinpoint the site, but does narrow the suggested scope, highlighting two areas in Wilcox County that warrant a closer look.

year colleges than ever before. The 2 year colleges actually go out into the prisons and help prisoners get their GED and job training so that they are more likely to find work when they are released. “Shelton State is a flagship of the state’s two year college program. It leads the way.” Davis said, complimenting Dr. Mark Heinrich, President of Shelton State. “Our 2 year colleges enable people to have a better life, to live better.” Davis said. The training programs for high school or post high school aged people enables them to find the jobs that are available to day in pipe fitting, welding, nursing, and special industrial applications. The colleges work hand in hand with industries to train workers or re-train them for the newest jobs. There are also new initiatives to maximize the use of the internet for online learning. New programs are also reaching out to veterans to get them involved in re-education and technical skills training. “Two year colleges are the most affordable and accessible of all higher education institutions”

EDITOR’S COMMENTS...

Mike Woodard

“I seize upon my imagination in hopes that it will come to life”. – Mike Woodard. I wrote a few weeks ago that I came up with an idea, searched for it on the internet to see if someone else had already had this idea, and then applied for a patent on it. I hired a top gun law firm in Washington, DC to determine if my idea was truly novel, that no one already has the patent on the idea and to determine if this concept is an enforceable patentable. According to them, it is. But, patent laws are a little hazy in the United States. I now go about the process of affirming rights to my design for a Global Positional System device, ES GPS. This system will save millions of barrels of oil for transportation if implemented. What made me think of the idea? Frankly I’m not sure. I was thinking about GPS systems and thought...these systems could be used in a whole different way. I wrote down what my imagination provided. Now I’ll have to spend thousands of dollars to flesh out this concept. The odds are our twisted system of government and greedy large corporations will steal the idea. Perhaps a weird way to put that...but true. Many people shy away from seizing upon their dreams and ideas. Frankly, I’m scared to death! It’s very likely that I’ll waste and lose a ton of money. And that someone will at least try to steal my idea and use it without paying me for the intellectual property it represents. Actually, there’s a pretty high probability corporations will claim they thought of it first. All it takes is a lawsuit I can’t afford for them to steal the concept. The rich get richer. There are too many people today who have few scruples, and little integrity or morals. Money drives them. They would make big money from my ideas and stick them in their pocket. Never look back or think twice. There is reason to fear in this world. The wolves are always at the door. But, that is not what we were put here to do...to fear. We are to exercise our minds, project visions, and push our endeavors forward. So I position myself on this ledge. One step from disaster. I will fear, deeply and penetratingly, to the depths of my soul. But, do it anyway. Success never comes sure. Usually it comes at grave peril. The combination of preparation, ingenuity, and endeavor help, but success comes hand in hand with failure and disaster. We fear failure and it keeps many from ever trying. But not trying assures failure. So, yet again, after countless attempts in my life to rise up and make a mark on this world...I risk again. Moving in and through the fear. I take my chance at the Sun, in business, for this, and with other new ideas all the time. I’ve failed so many times now I can’t even count them all. But, I still reach for that gold ring and recommend it. It has taught me bravery. Bravery is a scared soldier who continues to do what should be done despite the bombs that fall or bullets that whiz all about him. We all win or fail, when we try. There are no sure things. We must seize upon our imagination that it may come to life. We act upon our dreams in order to prove we were here, even if for no one other than ourselves. Recipes From Candy Taylor

Cheeseburger Bites

I just found this recipe this morning on Razzle Dazzle Recipes, so I haven’t tried it yet. But I already know we are gonna like them. They seem perfect for lunch, dinner, snack or appetizer. I bet they are so cute, hope you enjoy them.

Ingredients 1 Egg yolk -- beaten 1/2 pound Lean ground beef 2 tb Grated onions 1/2 t Salt 1 dash pepper 6 slices Bread 2 cups Cheddar cheese, cut into cubes

Instructions:

In a bowl, combine egg yolk, ground beef, onion, salt and pepper. Shape mixture by teaspoonfuls into 24 balls. Remove crusts from bread; roll flat and cut into 1 - 1/2 inch rounds. Place meatballs on bread rounds; make a depression in each ball and fill with a cube of cheese, making sure bread is covered with meat mixture. Place on baking sheet. Broil in preheated oven about 5 inches from heat 3 - 5 minutes or until no pink remains. Garnish with ketchup, mustard, sliced green onions or sliced dill pickles if desired.

JULY West Alabama Gardening - With Candy Taylor

- Roses. This is a month when Roses typically take a break. There isn’t anything wrong with them...they’re just tired from the summer heat. You can push them with fertilizer and water to produce, but it’s better to let them take a break. Prune faded blooms and cut back weak areas and expect them to come back again in the Fall. Don’t fertilize them now unless you’re willing to water them through the dry days of summer. Wait until around September to fertilize and water a lot again. Then you’ll get a wonderful fall display. This is not a particularly good time to plant roses either because you’ll be expected to water them so much. It’s better to wait for fall. It’ll be easier on you and the roses if you’ll do this. It is a good time to look out for insects and poison them accordingly. Spider mites, Japanese beetles, rose aphids should be treated. Also, soil bound microscopic organisms also attack this time of year. The treatment is at add new soil, compost, and cover with pine bark or other appropriate mulch.

Children’s Corner Kids and their habits: What to do about lying

A new survey shows that the average adult tells four lies a day, or 1,460 lies a year. Is it any wonder that our children tell fibs, too? Yet chances are when your child tells a whopper, it makes you mad. Why do kids lie? Kids lie for lots of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is to avoid punishment. After all, what child likes being grounded or losing privileges? A wonderful mom I work with shared a story about a time her child lied. Her son was in math class taking a big test. When the test was handed out her child also received the answer grid! Her child decided to copy the answers. Later, when the teacher confronted him, he lied and said he had not cheated. Her son was a good student who hadn’t been in trouble before. In fact, he admired his math teacher. He lied not only to try and escape punishment, but also because he was embarrassed and worried what his teacher would think of him. Sometimes kids lie to avoid disappointing adults they care about. Other times, kids will lie to side-step a sticky situation or perhaps to get attention. Sometimes kids tell lies to elevate their social standing among peers or to gain an advantage. Other times, a child may feel threatened, insecure or guilty. So, what should you do when your child lies? One solution is to tell kids who have done something wrong, “You’re going to receive one consequence for the bad choice you just made, but if you lie to me about it, you’re going to receive two consequences.” Normally, this approach will inspire children to tell the truth. When they do tell you the truth, then praise them for taking responsibility for their actions and tell them how much you value honesty. If you sense that the child is feeling threatened, insecure, guilty or embarrassed, you can talk with the child about those feelings by saying, “You seem kind of embarrassed. Tell me more.” You can also say, “That’s not how it happened. I need you to tell me the truth.” Sometimes you may inadvertently be setting your child up to lie. Let’s say that you know that your child just broke your favorite vase and you ask the child, “Did you break that vase?” Chances are that the child will lie to avoid the Punishment and save face. Instead, you could say, “I see that the vase is broken” and then take steps to clean Up the mess, determine a consequence, etc. but the focus of the interaction is on SOLUTIONS rather than BLAME. Or, you can take T. Berry Brazelton’s advice. He urges parents to stay calm and say, “We both know that what you said isn’t true. You don’t need to lie. I can stand the truth and so can you.” And let’s not forget that you are your child’s role model. Perhaps we can all work on lying fewer than 1,460 times per year!

The whole idea with natural makeup is to achieve a radiant face that is prettier than what nature had provided. Rosier lips. Flushed cheeks. Perfect skin that is soft and smooth and radiant. Long lush lashes. Bigger eyes. The works. That can be achieved with makeup. Only difference is how obvious do you want it to be that you are wearing makeup? Ideally, you should look prettier, yet look like you are not wearing any makeup at all. Is that possible? Ironically, it takes the full slew of makeup to look like you aren’t wearing any. You would need a makeup base, foundation, concealer, translucent loose powder, powder blusher, lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara, koh and a facial spray. The result is as if you aren’t wearing makeup, but you look so much prettier than you normally do when your skin is really makeup-free. Makeup is all about enhancing your beauty, not detracting from it. Done right, skin looks radiant, eyes bigger and brighter and lips so much more kissable. Great makeup application does that for you. Yes, you can go adventurous with dramatic eye makeup, or go for the gothic look, but hey, won’t it be more fun to have them guessing whether you were born naturally gorgeous? Ready? Step 1: After cleansing, toning and moisturizing your face, dot on makeup base and blend it with finger tips over your entire face. Step 2: Get a foundation that matches your skin exactly. Test the color on your jawline. It should disappear completely. Dot that foundation on your face and blend it in so it disappears into your skin. Step 3: Are any blemishes visible? Are your dark circles still obvious? If you really need more coverage, use a concealer that matches your skin. Dab on just enough with a brush onto the blemishes or dark circles and blend that in until the concealer vanishes completely. Step 4: Pick a blusher in a natural color -- the pink of your cheeks when you blush, or after a great workout. Or the golden glow you get on your cheekbones after a day out in the sun. Take a blusher brush and apply the blush on cheeks, forehead, chin and tip of your nose for all over radiance. Step 5: Choose an eyeshadow in a natural brown, peach or beige a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone. Apply that over your entire eyelid. Take another eyeshadow a few shades darker and appy into the crease of your eyelid to make eyes bigger. Step 6: Dust the entire face with loose translucent powder to set the makeup so that it looks more natural. Step 7: Spritz face lightly with a facial mist to set the makeup. Lay a kleenex over your face for a second. Step 8: Draw a fine line with kohl on the outer half of the upper lash line to make eyes look a little bigger. Smudge the line to soften it. Step 9: Apply a coat of mascara to open up the eyes and make lashes look lush and long. Step 10: Pick a lipstick that is the same color as the inside of your lip. Apply that with a lip brush. Blot the excess with kleenex.

Musings On Faith With Tom Woodard

Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com

I have always been intrigued, in reading Galatians 5:22-23 - “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (KJV)” - by the word ‘longsuffering’. Looking up ‘longsuffering’, one finds that the word in the original Greek texts is ‘makrothymia’. Makrothymia means many related things, including patience, endurance, constancy, steadfastness, perseverance (especially as in bearing troubles and ills), forbearance, and slowness in avenging wrongs. It not only encompasses “the temper which does not easily secumb under suffering”, but also “the self-restraint which does not easily retaliate a wrong”. It is opposed both “to cowardice or despondency” and “wrath or revenge”. Wow! What a word! I believe that most Christians, when reading Galatians 5:22-23, and understanding ‘love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance’, just sort of read over that word ‘longsuffering’. Thus it remains “one of those words” in the Bible which we never really come to grips with. I determined a meaning and understanding, but oh, how far short of the full meaning and depth of the word I was! Is there not something in makrothymia (longsuffering) for all of us? No matter our make-up or personality type, this word concerns some shortcoming in our individual natures, and speaks to us in quite revealing terms. For example, the phrase “the temper which does not easily succumb under suffering” strikes at the heart, for I have a bad temper, though most people who know me have never seen it. Therefore this verse, and especially the word ‘longsuffering’, will speak to me in a more powerful way than ever before. What part of the meaning of the word speaks to you in that same special way? From now on, I’m going to strive, with the help of the Lord, to be more longsuffering, exercising the fruit ‘makrothymia’. May we all! The Lord has illuminated our pathway so beautifully. May we look for the light. Yours in Christ, Tom

It seems, years ago, I simply reacted when hunting season came. The preparation phase lasted only about a month. The reason was because I hunted area farms. Unlike many hardwoods areas, farm land hunting is fairly predictable. The deer are basically going to be there from year to year. I know this cuts out the need for a lot of scouting articles, but the truth is the truth. For instance, I have heard all of my life that oak trees only produce acorns every three years or so. Now, I’ve not studied this, so don’t send me mean emails. What I HAVE discovered is this….. if there is an oak tree on the side of a field, and that field is fertilized by the farmer every year, that tree will have acorns every year. I have also noticed this….. if said farmer has several cows and those cows fertilize around that oak tree every year (if you know what I mean), that tree will have acorns every year as well. Things just are a little different on the farm. And what about that wonderful spring gobbler. I’ve hunted them in the deep woods and on the farm and I can tell you that, once again, if that farmer has cows and he feeds those cows a little sweet feed; he is creating one of the best management areas for turkeys. What each hunter needs to realize is that each cow pie is actually a natural bait pile that a turkey will eventually find. Somehow I just can’t see this technique being given print space in Field and Stream; but again, that’s life on the farm; a little different and, in my opinion, a lot better. The farmer has learned that nothing is wasted – even waste. He has learned that what the rest of the world sees as worthless and even unmentionable, is the catalyst for growth and the medium for consistency. He has learned that waste is not waste, it is “fertilizer!” What all of us need to remember is there is nothing that happens in our life that is useless or worthless. God never looks at something that we have done and says, “I can’t use that.” He uses EVERYTHING and has promised that even the things that we consider of no use, He will use to grow our life into one that is consistent in bearing spiritual fruit year after year. What looks like cow pies to you, is fertilizer to God.

World Watch with Mike Woodard mike@tuscaloosa-shopper.com

It’s only money. Boy those words come hard when you fought you guts out to have it and it disappears. And when we watch our government, and some in private enterprises like banks or financial institutes, who have power over our money, take it, waste it, and act stupid with it...it can really burn you up. I’ve listened to many working in or for governments lately. They say their revenue streams are down. They’ll have to raise taxes in order to continue services. They apparently believe that they should be immune to striving for greater efficiencies, or sharing the burden of a down economy. It’s as if they are saying that no matter what all government must go on. I beg to differ. In my businesses I’ve had to cut back, reduce my paycheck, and find every possible way to survive against the odds, and the government is talking about they need to take more so they won’t have to exist in the same world I do? It is they who must get a grip. The salary and benefits of government workers today are much more than private citizens typically make. I’ve started trying to figure out a way to get government to fund something for me rather than finding money from the private sector. Now that’s a long way from the way Mike Woodard used to think! Our state is going into red ink, as other states in the nation are, and in a much bigger way the federal government is. My businesses are in red ink...that seems to be the order of the day. The politicians are all talking about the need to raise governments revenues, but they’ve found a way to do most of what they do in the most inefficient means possible. There are no private enterprises that could match the government for stupidity in fiscal responsibility. You’d think somebody somewhere within our government would start thinking about doing what they do for less money. That might mean paying the average federal government worker, that now “earns” $70,000 per year a little less to match the reduced incomes of the common private citizen. It might require them to work more years before they can retire, they might have to pay more for their benefits...all things being done in the private sector. After all, they are supposed to serve us, and to reflect us as a nation...right now they’re on borrowed money and time...and so they want to come after our blood money. Sorry Sam, I don’t have it to spare now.
