Codeveloped by a University of Alabama botanist and licensed through UA’s Ofﬁce for Technology Transfer: “It’s like moving your landscape about 200 miles further south” said Dr. David Francko, a professor of biological sciences. The spray won “Best in Show” at the 2009 Independent Garden Center Show in Chicago. FreezePruf will soon be available in garden stores.

Moundville Feather Art -Jay McGirt is sewing thousands of feathers onto a piece of burlap. The decorated fabric will stretch across the top of a Native American palanquin – a litter carried by four men in an exhibit at the Moundville Archaeological museum, McGirt said “This is a labor of love. I wanted to show folks in Alabama that there are people who care about tribal art.”

You don’t even have to have tickets! That first game showed our stuff first on national TV….and boy have we got it! This game is to crank up the party in Tuscaloosa. It’s Bryant Denny Stadium and the Quad in all their glory. Fans might not be up for the game itself. After all, Florida International is not supposed to be a contender for titles. This is to be a game for relaxing and having fun after last week’s stress fest. The number of businesses and organizations which are hosting parties on the quad for this one is at an all time high. There will be more tents and parties than ever before. Sorry Florida International fans who’ve picked this paper up…but I don’t think the football gods are going to smile on you this Saturday. Saban and our team plan for you to go home as you expected to. Alabama’s just too strong this year. But, we love you for coming to T-Town, and are glad to have you here in our wonderful city. You’ll find pleasant fans and lot’s of happy people during your visit. The next real test of Bama should come when Arkansas comes to town September 26. That won’t just be a party, that promises to be a nail biter. Don’t expect Saban to be looking far down the road. The task at hand is to dispatch the Florida International team. And that’s what will happen. That’s not to say FIU is a bad team, actually they are a good team...it’s just that Bama has another National Championship contender team. That’s up in a rarified air. After the VT game, the nation’s on notice...this Bama team is for real. There’s been a lot of distractions of late...fishing trips that someone wanted to try to make a big deal out of... wonder who that was? Some injuries….all this following the book resale fiasco early this year. But, these things are to be expected in these times. Bama looked REAL good in Atlanta, see my story in the sports section inside this issue. There is no better place on this planet to enjoy SEC football at it’s best than Tuscaloosa Alabama. This town knows how to do the deal, on the field and off. So welcome my Crimson Tide friends...and you Panthers, this is Alabama football. I could predict a score, but rather, I’ll just say Bama wins this one.

LITERACY POWERLINE’S MARGARET DOUGHTY SPEAKS AT LITERACY SUMMIT

-Mike Woodard mike@tuscaloosa-shopper.com Margaret Doughty, of Literacy Powerline, spoke in Tuscaloosa this week at the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club and at the Literacy Summit. Doughty is a leading authority on literacy and has consulted across the nation and around the world. Her message sounds a lot like work! She works with literacy service providers, educational agencies, employers, grant writers, tutoring services, organizations and community leaders in a concerted effort to improve the quality of education. She said “Literacy is not the goal, but it is a tool to reach the goal of self-sufﬁciency.” She noted that the predominance of jobs lost in the current recession are by people with low literacy levels. Doughty says the mission is to “work with educators, business and labor leaders, philanthropies, civic and faith based groups, policymakers, literacy providers and students to demonstrate that everyone thrives when the community is committees to 100% literacy”. Tuscaloosa’s Literacy Council is committed to improving literacy in west Alabama. Bringing in quality resources like Doughty, are designed to organize the resources to improve literacy in our area

Serving as a pall bearer for my good friend Johnny Winters as his father was laid to rest brought to the surface of my soul thought of the passage of time and our lives. There seems to be so much consideration of accumulation of wealth, and time spend toiling for material wealth and survival, that thoughts of the heart are pushed aside, to the back burner, and only now and then do we face them eye to eye. And in that consideration is the value of a man. In this world of pecking order, who’s got what, there are men who I admire most...and they are the ones who live life to the full. Johnny’s dad was such a man. My father was. I’ve know many who’s life was not about having but being. I remember Mr. Winter’s buck dancing a thing he called the crow dance or crow step or something...and, was it a sight to see! And in laying this man to rest, with the teary eyes abounding, there was a feeling of celebration in my heart. That we all go here. It’s how we got there that counts. Did we touch hearts along the way? It all seems so short as my days multiply. What once was such a long way away seems so close now. Closer anyway. We all hope for a long run of life, but we all face the same result. Energy, letting energy fly…that’s the call of man. It started with the first flames of camp fires, and the dancing began. And it seems we try to rise above that dance with technology and power of positions obtained and resources owned. And God knows you can’t out earn or out own a dishonest man. Those who would take advantage of those they consider lesser, they can climb above in position and capital. But can they master the art of living? And today I honor the highest position of all in my world. That of a loving father, a true friend, a loving wife, a happy family, and the strength to succeed in ways which can not be acquired or purchased from a purse. Mr. Winters had an easy smile, and energy to live life as full as it gets. And that is not based on where you lay your head, or what you possess...except to say what you possess within. The spark of caring, the spark of curiosity, and the will to dance. And that easy smile and gentle touch that warms hearts can be more important than the heat of an endless fire. For all who have loved and lost, love again. For this is short, these trips around the sun are limited. And though we can not put aside tomorrow to live all in this day, we as well can not live for tomorrows possessions and postpone the glory of each day. I hope we can find both in our life. We are visitors here. Hopeful of another chance on another shore. With our only passage the one we all will face. And since it the way, and the only way, we should embrace it. And love in death as much as we love in life. I live with memories everyday. Of my lost father, and my lost son. And I still try to give as much to life as I did before...and yes, it’s tough. But, these are my trips around the sun, as well as yours. We can spend them as we wish. Some to and of themselves, others for the world about them. Super Easy Chicken Enchilda Skillet The name says it all, super easy, chicken and Mexican, some if my favorite things. It really is easy and when you add cheese and ranch to chicken you can’t go wrong. Enjoy.

Ingredients 1 Tsb oil 1 lb. boneless chicken breast-bitesize 1 can chicken broth (14 1/2 oz) 1/4 cup ranch dressing 2 Tbs flour 6 flour tortillas 2 cups shredded four cheese Mexican blend 1/2 cup salsa

Instructions: 1. Heat oil in large deep skillet on medium-high heat. Add chicken, cook 7 mins or until cooked through. 2. Mix broth, dressing, and flour until well blended, gradu ally add to skillet, stirring constently. Add tortillas, strir to combine. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, simmer 3 mins. 3. Sprinkle with cheese, cover simmer 3-5 mins or until cheese is melted. Top with salsa.

(NU) - When Yennie Shyu, a 12-year-old from San Jose, Calif., tried to visualize peace, she immediately thought of e-mail. “In this age, technology and computers are very popular, so I thought about combining technology and e-mail with spreading the message of peace and love,” said Shyu, whose poster, which depicts little girls e-mailing olive branch-carrying doves, won the 21st Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest. Shyu describes the image as “little fingers typing big messages, spreading love and peace worldwide.” Shyu’s poster, which was selected from 350,000 entries from 70 countries, portrays the theme “Peace Begins With Me.” As the grand prize winner, Shyu received a trip to New York City for a special award ceremony during Lions Day with the United Nations. “Lions in many nations have embraced the Peace Poster Contest as a hands-on way to promote peace and to support the young people in their communities,” said Lions Clubs International President Al Brandel. “The contest is another example of Lions being everyday heroes in reaching out and listening to the young people of this world.” During the past two decades, more than 4 million children from ages 11 through 13 have artistically shared their visions for peace through the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. VT was not in the same league as Bama, and they were ranked number seven. The big news for Bama’s was on both sides of the ball. First, the defense is big and fast...when a veteran speedster like Tyler, VT’s scrambling quarterback, could only make one decent run all night because the Tide’s defense was boxing him is and running him down...that’s fast. To be so big, Bama is extremely fast. This defense will get better as the season goes, so I’ve got nothing but good to say about them. And, Bama has depth. The numbers seemed to get jumbled up now and then. I didn’t know if 72 or 67 was on the field from one play to the next. The option to put in top flight players with fresh legs for a whole game...it’s a coaches dream situation and that’s the situation Saban’s got. On the offensive side of the ball...McElroy is da man. You’d of thought this was his third season as starter instead of his first! Accurate passes, got rid of the ball when it was necessary, scrambled for yardage when no one was open…he has professional quarterback written all over him. And Ingram, frankly, he’s ready for the pros right now. And when Jones was double teamed the whole night, Mays stepped up as alternate receiver. I’m sure Jones was none to happy to have two guys on him all night, but it sure proved that can’t be done with effect by other teams. You double up on one man and another guy is open...and if the other guys can catch the ball...that’s who you have to throw the ball too. Jones needs to realize that’s what happens when you’re as good as him. OK, #25, let’s not name names, messed up big time and practically gave VT a touchdown...first games of the season, you just have to expect this type of snafu. And ball protection from arm rips needs a little attention. That Bama handled VT so well gives the Tide faithful hope that we’ll see Florida in the SEC Championship again, and this time Teebow won’t be able to hide. NASCAR ON TO A exciting and great race in Atlanta (can’t remember so many caution flags in my life!) moves on to Richmond for another night run this Saturday night at 6 p.m. Just roll straight from Bama’s game onto the race. Kasey Kahne did a super job pulling Atlanta out, his car was red hot. We’re close to the chase...the final run ten races for the cup. It’s gettin’ good. “If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load (Galatians 6:3-5, NIV).” The King James translation of verse 4 says “But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.” Oh, the messes we get in when we get to thinking that we are ‘something’! Pride, indeed, does go before a fall. I would almost say that anyone who hasn’t suffered the ill effects of his or her own pride has not lived, or not lived very long. It is a prevalent human condition. But the pride, or “rejoicing in himself alone” which Paul is speaking of here is not that sort of pride. Rather, it is the inner peace (which, if shared, often becomes the humanistic pride of Proverbs, and is then destroyed) which comes from a spiritual fulfilling brought about by testing one’s self as against no other man or woman, but by the loving wishes of the Lord for our service and well-being. Even in the Church (or should I say, ‘especially’) we can stumble and fall when we become prideful of our position or service in the Church, as compared to others in the congregation. That is a violation of the admonition not to compare ourselves with somebody else. Avoid it, dear friends! Failure to avoid it dampens our witness, lessens the blessing of our works, and can even harm the faithfulness or worship of others in the Church. In the same way, it can lead to disruptions in all avenues of our daily lives. Let humility be the watchword. Let our service, insofar as possible, be in secret, or at least without fanfare. Otherwise, we may very well fall into deceiving ourselves. And where, then, is our reward? It has vanished, as the chaff in the fire. “If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. And who, pray tell, is ‘nothing’? All of us, apart from the mercies and grace of God! Therefore, let us not compare ourselves to others, for in some cases it can lead to humanistic pride, and in others to a feeling of defeat, when we determine that we don’t measure up. Either way, it is an unhealthy thing, and to be avoided. Let us “Each one . . . test his own actions” against themselves, and against no one else. For we live by faith in the only One who measured up, Jesus Christ. No deception there! Yours in Christ, Tom

We are quickly coming to everyone’s favorite time of year. The signs of summer’s close are the start of school, Labor Day, and another deer season. Autumn brings cool mornings and warm evenings. It’s the days that country folks enjoy the screen door and open windows. The air seems cleaner and fresher, and the hazy skies are now clear as a mountain stream. The most prominent signs of fall are the leaves that change from hues of green into colors as different as the trees themselves. My part of the country is known for the beautiful fall colors that cover the mountains like Joseph’s coat of many colors. During the summer months, from a distance, every tree looks the same. The hills seem covered with one big blob of green. And while the evergreens may stand out from their needles, the rest of the landscape is uniform. Each tree thrived under the conditions of spring and summer. When the pressure of fall comes, each tree begins to show its own unique colors. Fall is not the time of plenty; it is the time of lack. This lack is what causes the leaves to turn. We might say that when each tree is under the pressure of a lack of sustenance, it begins to show its true colors. The same can be said about us. Many times in our life we are forced under some pressure. One of the most common pressures is the one that comes from a perceived lack of what we need. As with any pressure, we are squeezed to the point that what is inside comes out. We show our true colors. Now this doesn’t mean that one bad moment is the determining factor of who we really are. But pressure that is put on us OVER TIME will reveal what we are made of. What we need to understand is that many times it is God who is applying the pressure to us. He is not doing it so He can find out what we will do – He already knows; but He is doing it so WE can know and so that WE can see what is truly in our heart and if we really trust in God who has promised to provide everything we may need.

But, the core message of: The United States is spending double on health care what any other nation on earth spends and has higher infant mortality, shorter life spans, and less healthy people than most of the industrialized nations that do provide health care to all of their citizens. Now I could be a coward and go along with the common man on the street, who has by now been scared slap to death that the government is taking over health care and can’t run it. But I don’t see anybody called for the end to Medicare, which provide senior citizens health care via the United States government. Sometimes the debate has simply left me in awe of the power to lie and deceive the American people by corporations and media. Frankly, this is as impressive of a display of misinformation I’ve seen in my lifetime. Without doing anything...I mean, if we don’t do something. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Because, unchecked, your health care bill will climb to 20% of every dollar you spend...and then, give it a few more years and it will be 25% of every dollar spent in America. Now, you measure than against under 10% for every industrial competitor we have, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for our nation being the least competitive industrial nation on the planet. And if you think every dollar of medical expenditure is “value” then I invite you to take a ride on lake Tuscaloosa to visit the multitude of million dollar homes owned by those who make their money from health care. It’s a gravy train 95% of our citizens only imagine in their wildest dreams. The mansions have grown larger, into castles, and they belong to people from all walks of the medical industry...and if you think they won’t run ads, push politicians, do just about anything imaginable to prevent health care reform….you better think again. So there. I touched the hot potato. Dog gone, I hate it when folks get mad at me for me having an opinion. But, frankly, if we don’t do something about the cost of health care in America….we’re all going to go bankrupt trying to pay for it. Right now, medical care is the #1 cause of bankruptcy in America….how do you rise above #1. Perhaps someday when it’s the only cause of bankruptcy in America we’ll get it. The bottom line is...at this rate, unabated, someday, those who control the medical ﬁeld would own everything. Perhaps we should consider doing something about that?
