Our space is so important
As I write this column the sun is splitting the sky and the temperature is north of 20 degrees. We’ve already had more good days in 2025 than we had in the entire 2024 and, as sure as night follows day, we will be having hose pipe bans.
But for everyone in the landscaping industry spring is a golden time. All the work that you carried out over the winter months has bedded in and those visions, previously only seen computer-generated on screens, is now there in genuine and real technicolour – complete with the associated smells and bird song.
With war ravaging much of the planet and the economic position of most of the world out of kilter, because of a certain somebody’s love of tariffs, people like to retreat to places of comfort and security and since lockdown that has increasingly been our homes and gardens.
Making the most of our space is so important and that is why the nation’s landscapers have become our saviours. We let people like to think we can turn our hand to most things in the garden but the difference between “home-made” and professional work is stark. A garden or garden feature created and built by landscape designers and contractors will invariably take the Gold Medal and prove to be money well invested.

Mansfield Sand transforms sports pitches at Haileybury
Andy Richards, Grounds Manager at Haileybury School, credits Mansfield Sand’s MM40 with significantly improving drainage and enhancing the overall quality of the school’s sports pitches.

Haileybury sits on heavy London clay, which presents drainage issues, particularly during the wet months.

Mark Gregory joins Perennial’s new ambassador programme

DSV’s PRO pitch delivers for Warrington Wolves
Niall Hazlehurst, Head of Grounds at Warrington Wolves Rugby Club, has seen a remarkable improvement in the playing surface at The Halliwell Jones Stadium since introducing DSV’s EuroGrass PRO Pitch seed mixture.
Niall and his assistant Tom, an apprentice, manage the stadium pitch as well as two natural pitches at the club’s training ground.
“Last year was the first time we’d taken the top off with a fraise mow since before COVID,” explains Niall.
“It was a big deal convincing the board to commit to this annually, so we wanted to make sure we got everything right in terms of nutrition and seed. The results have been fantastic, and the pitch has handled the usage really well.”
When considering the best approach for the pitch renovation, Niall turned to DSV and was introduced to their EuroGrass seed range, which was supplied by Indigrow.
“We decided to use the PRO Pitch mixture, and it has been brilliant. We applied it in August last year, and the colour, wear, and disease tolerance
have been outstanding. Probably the best I’ve used, to be honest.”
Niall states that he was already aware of PRO Pitch being successfully used at other stadiums and private schools, which gave him additional confidence in the product. He also credits DSV for their expertise and support throughout the process.
“DSV is a great company and Sam Horner (DSV Amenity Business Manager) knows what he’s talking about and is someone you can trust,” says Niall. “If you ask him a question, he’ll give you an honest answer every time. He listened to what we wanted as a club and has been to our site a couple of times, even bringing some of the EuroGrass team to take a look at how the seed is performing.”
Since the team returned to training in November, the pitch has endured intense usage.
“We’ve had eleven high-intensity pre-season training sessions— each lasting two hours – from November to early February. That equates to about 15 games worth of wear,” explains Niall. “We only have one small lighting rig, so we

rely on Mother Nature, which can be challenging, but the pitch has stood the test. The shaded areas are the best they’ve ever been, and even the coaches and fans have noticed the difference. There’s grass in some corners where there’s never been grass before.” With the success of last year’s renovation, Niall is already planning ahead.
“We’ll be renovating again in July because we’ve got a good window in the fixture schedule. We’ll be doing exactly the same as last year because it worked so well. The germination and strike rate were excellent, and I have no reason to change something that’s working. I am also in discussions with the company about introducing a different DSV seed mix for the training ground pitches. I’ve got full confidence in DSV.”

Garden designer Peter Donegan announced for Grand Designs Live

The gardening team at familyowned Bolton Castle near Leyburn have their work cut out. With 1,018 metres of hedging, including 545 metres of their renowned privet maze and border edging, Head Gardener Jason Hanslip is keen to retain the family’s ethos of nonchemical intervention, so how does he manage his hedging meterage?
With Bolton Castle opening to visitors from spring to autumn, Jason, and Estate Workers Mike and Paul, need to keep its gardens tip top.
Many of us often experience the feathery cobweb-style covering which affects our Boxwood plants, and its family of plants. Known as Box Blight, Boxwood is particularly

suspectable giving our hedges unsightly brown leaves and stem die back. This fast-spreading fungal disease is caused by two types of fungus; Cylindrocladium buxicoa and Volunterra buxi.
As with any plant damage its always advisable to give the plant some fertiliser to help it recover from the attack.
Award winning Bolton Castle is keen to retain its reputation as one of the most lovely, manicured gardens in North Yorkshire, which also includes hedged rose beds and the acclaimed medieval herb gardens. Here are more of Jason’s top tips to keep fungus and blights at bay, whether or not you have one metre or 1,000:
• Keep all tools clean and sharp, regularly dipping them in bleach or disinfectant while clipping and after use
• Clean up clippings and debris after clipping plants, as the spores on fallen leaves can remain active for six days, bag up clippings and dispose of in your waste bin or centre do not compost these.
• During dry spells use a ‘leaky pipe’ hose to water the base of the plants.
• Avoid watering over the top as
the water droplets can activate and spread the spores.
• If planting hedging, plant them in open sunny spots as the blight can thrive in damp shady areas.
• Cut out any affected areas making sure cuts are nice and clean, it’s advised to go back a little bit further than you might think.
Jason is using Yew (Taxus baccata) more and more as it responds well to regular close clipping, and other plants to consider would be Coroakia x virgata and Podocarpus nivalis.
Jason and the team also maintain two Hornbeam hedges, five Wil-low arbours and tunnel, in addition to the traditional Privet, Yew and Box. Jason adds: “We are lucky here at Bolton Castle that the damp and humid conditions in which these diseases thrive, are rare.
Whilst we have challenges with the location of the castle and garden on an exposed side of Wensleydale, we benefit from the breezes and winds which can make pests and fungal diseases trickier to spread. It’s a constant pressure to maintain these hedges and any tips I have for Bolton Castle are just as relevant to your average garden and gardener.”



No land reclamation job too tough for these contractors
BPG Contractors, based in Oldham and covering the North West, has found the perfect machine for land reclamation in the Reist Landscaper from Campey Turf Care Systems.

This job involved importing and re-profiling materials to create the area, with the materials often containing debris such as bricks, wire, and plastic, as they originated from building sites. “Because the material wasn’t clean, we needed a machine that could handle these conditions without any mechanical issues,” Bryn explains. “This is where the Reist Landscaper’s design shines, as it has no mechanical parts, such as gearboxes, which could be damaged or become tangled with debris.
“The lack of mechanical parts makes the machine perfect for this kind of work. There’s nothing to break, and no need to worry about costly repairs or replacing parts.”

Ecoprotec introduces new porcelain paving enhancer

coats can be applied at rights angles – and with an hour’s drying time between each application –to a maximum of four coats.
The treatment can also be

used on existing tiles and pavers which should first be cleaned with Ecoprotec Intensive Cleaner and then rinsed and left to dry for 24 hours before application.
Being water-based, the enhancer can be applied over residual moisture and is safe to use in unventilated spaces. It is also breathable, so will not trap moisture within the tile or substrate.
To maintain the glossy aesthetic, tiles and pavers can be renovated by stripping the original coating using Ecoprotec Joint Residue Remover and reapplying every 2-3 years. Surfaces should be routinely swept and regularly mopped using Ecoprotec General Cleaner.
Ecoprotec Porcelain Paving Enhancer is available in one litre and five litre units and has an approximate coverage of 30-40 m2 per litre, per coat, depending on the tile texture.

There is a well trodden saying that states: “If you love what you are doing, you never work a day in your life”.
Melissa Morton had a very rewarding career as a chemical scientist in the Department of Colour Science at Leeds University, but in 2012 took the bold decision to give it up for her passion of becoming a Landscape Designer.
Given the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into building Melissa Morton Garden Design over the subsequent 13 years, she might not thank you for suggesting that she hasn’t worked since that
date, but the sentiment of that old saying still holds very true.
It is always difficult to measure progress and meet pre-determined targets and with the pandemic, various wars and now trading uncertainties, that is even more tricky but Melissa can be proud of growing her Ilkley-based company
That pride jumped through the roof last month when Melissa’s APLsponsored “Garden for Gathering” was awarded Best in Show at the annual Harrogate Spring Show.
“It was the first time I’d ever done a Show Garden. I’d always been reluctant to do one mainly because of the time commitment
it requires but with Harrogate being local to me I felt that it was something I wanted to do, as well as support the Association of Professional Landscapers. It also enabled me to support some of the local businesses which I use as suppliers and turn the spotlight on them too,” explained Melissa, speaking a few days after the Show.
Among those were York-based Urbis Design, who lent a water feature, and Lightwater Quarries, from Ripon, who supplied the gravel. The APL landscape contractor was J. Paxman Landscapes, who are based not so very far away in Huddersfield.

Melissa Morton: Gardening plays a big part in family life

Visitors to the Harrogate Show may not have known it but when they were admiring Melissa’s work they were also appreciating a fine example of methodology introduced to the world in 1202 by Leonardo of Pisa – the Fibonacci sequence. This forms the basis for the golden section used by Melissa in the design of the show garden.
For those not familiar, It is a series where each number is the sum of the previous two and it when carried out correctly provides a balance and awareness of space that only the formula can provide. It usually starts from 0 and 1 and goes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, etc.
“It was a small space so basing the garden on a geometry which is used in design and garden design made sense. The feedback from visitors was that, for a small space it felt spacious and balanced. It was the first time I’d used this form of golden section geometry and the curved walling was based on the Fibonacci sequence,” explained Melissa.
In an interesting aside – at least to me – not only was Fibonacci a key element in Melissa’s design, Liverpool’s win in the Premier League two days after the Harrogate Show, also completed the sequence for the honour’s board of league champions. Listing all the winners since it was formed in 1992. Starting with single title winners Blackburn and Leicester City through to multiple
winners Liverpool (2), Arsenal (3) and Chelsea (5) then Manchester City (8) and Manchester United (13). There is the sequence. What a week for one of Pisa’s favourite sons!
As for the Garden for Gathering itself: “I had a very open brief and given that it was a small space, nine by six metres, Garden for Gathering was all about gathering fruit and herbs and a grandparent being able to share gardening knowledge with grandchildren. Also
it was about having people around to share the space. So ‘gathering’ worked in those terms as well.”
“We had a small area under a pergola with a lounge set and then we incorporated a little swing seat opposite which we thought grandchildren might quite like to use. We used gravel rather than have a lawned area purely because of the time demands but also it’s a great example of a material which is good for drainage, is an

} economic option for installation as well as low maintenance.
Being awarded Best in Show is sure to become a landmark for Melissa as she continues to develop her career and her company, If it were needed it is a vindication of the decision to give up her academic career and devote all of her time and energy to landscape design.
The department of Colour Science at Leeds University is a cross over between chemistry and textile chemistry and Melissa was a teaching fellow and coordinated and delivered the laboratory practicals for the various degree programmes.
“Colour science included the preparation of coloured materials and the application of them, whether it be printing or dyeing,” said Melissa,

adding that the understanding of colour perception and colour awareness is something that she has been able to take forward to garden and planting design.
Gardening was very much in the family, with her parents and grandparents keen amateur gardeners, but it was when she moved into a new home in Ilkley that the desire to turn a hobby into a career grew strong.
“I loved our new garden but I wanted to make some changes to it. However I didn’t know how best to go about it. So I signed up for a 10 week evening class in garden design at the RHS’s Harlow Carr Gardens, in Harrogate.
“That introduced me to the whole design process and what’s involved. I loved the creative and aesthetic side of things but there was also the problem solving and an analytical side of things too, which resonated with me and obviously the type of work I like to do,” she said.
“There’s a process to design and the element of being able to reflect on how a space works and how
you work up a layout for a garden. It was then that I decided that I wanted to make a career change. While still working at the university, she threw herself into picking up as much knowledge as she could as quickly as she could.
“I took on a pretty intensive training course in horticulture at an evening class at Shipley College covering the RHS Levels 2 and 3 over the course of a couple of years. Once completed, I took the decision to leave the security of my academic career and try to make a go of things,” said Melissa.
“Subsequently I was putting in 40 hours a week on my ‘part time’ studies in Landscape Architecture at Leeds Beckett University while still looking after two young children,” she revealed.
“Since then I’ve carried on training and have recently put myself through the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers accreditation process and now a fully registered member (MSGLD). The assessment is very thorough and I felt that I would use their

accreditation process to help me deliver designs and communicate them at a professional level.
“With my background I’m the sort of person who loves learning. People say that you don’t need qualifications. While I agree that getting a qualification doesn’t necessarily mean that you can run a business and earn a living, because I have been in teaching I do know and appreciate the value of qualifications.
“It’s not necessarily the piece of paper but it is the learning process and the assessment process that pushes you, and challenges you, on your training.”
Having launched Melissa Morton Garden Design, and working from home, Melissa can well recall her first assignment.
“It was around 2013, I had just set up and all I had was a one page of essentially a business card on my website.
“But it worked. A local resident discovered it and contacted me. He had a very big historic house and a Lutyens style garden and he needed a new planting design. It

was very much in at the deep end.”
That project successfully completed Melissa continued to develop her skills, learning how to tender for jobs, work with contractors and building up her experience base.
Then, in the January before Covid, she transitioned from working from home to having a dedicated office in Ilkley town centre.
“That was one of the biggest decisions and commitments I could take, but it has been great and I have found that having that distinct space means that I am working more productively, separate from home.”
And having spent the first few years working alone she now has company.
“About three years ago I took on an intern, who was studying landscape architecture at Leeds Beckett, one day a week for 12 months. They were a final year student and when they graduated I took on another.
“That was my way of dipping my toe in the water of having an extra pair of hands working on the CAD etc.
“Then last November I took
on a part-time design assistant and they’re working for me two to three days a week.”
Having someone around to bounce ideas off is never a bad idea and it is something that Melissa embraces wholeheartedly
“I became an accredited designer member of the APL (MAPL) about 18 months ago and they’re a very supportive organisation and a great association to be a part of.
Participation on their WhatsApp groups (for members nationally and as an accredited designer) is very useful, as people just generally share day to day questions and support each other constructively.”
With a thirst for knowledge, a brain hot-housed in the world of academia and a constant desire to improve Melissa is very much on the path to more success.
As for more show gardens?
“I have enjoyed it. Yes, but now I need to crack on with some work!”
Work? As we said at the beginning Melissa hasn’t done a day’s work since the moment she set up Melissa Morton Garden Design.

bucket, rake, and flail mower, which make our work far more efficient. The time saved means we can finish jobs quicker and move on to the next one.”
In addition to enhancing productivity, Avant machines have proved invaluable during storm damage recovery. “The storms this year were a real test,” says Tony. “Without the Avant, we would have spent half a day or more clearing debris. With this machine, we can clear it in just an hour or two, making a huge difference.”

Using the lift also means less physical strain on the team. “Climbing trees all day takes its toll, especially as we’re not getting any younger,” Tony says. “The Leguan has taken a lot of the climbing out of the equation, reducing fatigue and the risk of
injury. It’s safer, quicker, and more efficient, and it allows us to get jobs done with minimal physical stress.”
The Leguan 225 also offers the flexibility of operating from the basket or the ground, which has helped improve team efficiency.
“When we’re working in pairs, one person can focus on cutting while the other clears debris. It’s a big advantage, especially on busy days.”

Work smarter not harder with Toro’s robotic mowers
Robotic mowing has arrived and with it comes the new generation of working smarter, not harder, thanks to Toro.

The Toro GeoLink Solutions Autonomous Fairway Mower is a hybrid mower. It has a Kawasaki engine but steering, traction, lift and lowering of the cylinder units are electric. The mower still has a seat and a steering wheel; this is because it has both manual and autonomous modes. In manual it’ll operate just like a normal triplex so if the operator wants to
move it to a new location that isn’t mapped yet or support a different area on the course, they can.
There are three fully robotic models in the Turf Pro range. There’s the choice of three or five cutting heads providing a cutting width of 63.3cm (25ins) in the Turf Pro 300 and 103.3cm (40.7ins) for the Turf Pro 500. They can mow up to 18.5 acres (75,000m2) and there’s a model for use on slopes of up to 24 degrees. They are all-electric, selfcharging and automatically return to the charging station.
And through increased mowing frequency these mowers can purposefully remove less leaf tissue, producing shorter clippings and with adjustable mowing patterns can be utilised to achieve multiple aesthetics.
Jon concludes: “Toro developed this technology and these products in direct response to customer feedback and research. It was clear there was a changing mindset about what was needed regarding labour support, combatting increasing operational costs and how to approach mowing grass. Remote-controlled mowing makes sense
Steep banks, uneven terrain, and hazardous conditions have long made bank mowing a high-risk, time-consuming task. But thanks to the Raymo from Iseki UK and Ireland, Xtreme Mowing Ltd is tackling these challenges with greater efficiency and safety than ever before.
Director of Xtreme Mowing, John Barr, uses the remote-controlled electric mower at numerous sites, including hangar roofs and, in this instance, an industrial estate on the outskirts of Bristol. The estate was developed 15 years ago on the River Severn floodplain, meaning it is all on raised ground with numerous banks leading to the water courses.
Previously, John cut this site with a walk-behind mower, but a desire to embrace new technology led him to the Raymo through local Iseki dealer Votex Ltd.
“We used to use a dual-wheeled walk-behind pedestrian mower on these banks,” John explains. “You can go up to about 45 degrees with that, but it’s basically a 300kilo mower. And when you’ve got greasy banks and things like that, and the machine slides down, you need to try to control that.
“Whereas using a remote control removes the operator from harm’s way and speeds up the process because you don’t need to follow the machine everywhere. So, you can put the Raymo into areas that
would be more risky for an operator.
“On a site like this, it’s about a seven-mile walk using the pedestrian mower and it would take about four or five hours. With the Raymo, you’re reducing that by about 30%. So it’s a lot more efficient, and with a battery, you’ve got no fuel costs or risk of fuel going into the water courses.”
The environmental benefits of the Raymo were a major draw for John, who has seen a trend of customers requesting eco-friendly solutions for

mowing. With four to five hours of battery life per pack and the ability to swap a pack in less than five minutes, the operator benefits and cost-savings of going electric are clear.
However, John is focused on more than just the electric aspect of the machine. Using the FlexiSpike wheels in combination with the SFINX attachment, the Raymo can safely work at 55-degree angles while effortlessly cutting over edges.
John explains: “It’s a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, to be honest. You can be cutting the grass banks behind us, and then you can go straight into a load of light bramble and heavier scrub, and you don’t even need to change the deck height because it is very powerful.
“I think when we’re on some hangar roofs, we are close to 55 degrees, which is why we’ve got the FlexiSpike wheels. Again, that removes any slip of the machine and makes you more efficient because you can track the machine as you want, rather than trying to adjust to the machine’s slide down the bank.
“Previous contractors had guys with strimmers cutting the ends of the hangers, which is obviously the riskiest part. So we go up and over each end with the SFINX on, which then leaves you a 1.2-meter head cut. Then, the SFINX trims all the grass right over each end. So you can go around once with it on, take it off to make the machine lighter, and then crack on and cut the hangar roofs, which then is a lot faster.”

Makita has launched an innovative new battery for its 40VMax XGT range of high-performance tools.
The 4.0Ah BL4040F battery is the first Makita battery to include cutting-edge tabless technology, which allows more efficient power delivery, better runtimes, and cooler running. As the latest Makita F-Type battery, it is engineered for performance on the very highest demand applications.
The tabless lithium-ion cells in the new BL4040F eliminates the bottleneck caused by current concentration by connecting the entire end of the electrode to the end of the cell, instead of connecting to tabs at each end.
With a larger connection area inside the cell, heat generation is minimised. This means that even under high load, the cell temperature is reduced compared to standard designs, which has a positive effect on the overall service life of the battery. A further benefit is that the battery can be charged immediately after intense use, with no need for a cooling phase, meaning shorter overall charging times. BL4040. Like all Makita F-Type batteries, the BL4040F is a highoutput battery designed for enhanced performance and better runtimes on higher drain tools such as chainsaws, breakers and demolition hammers.

The new 4.0Ah BL4040F delivers the same 2.1kw maximum output as the 5.0Ah BL4050F. This means customers now have the choice
of the larger, higher capacity 5.0Ah battery or the smaller, lighter 4.0Ah battery to achieve the high output that demanding tasks require. In fact, the BL4040F is 34% more compact and 28% lighter than the BL4050F.
As with all Makita’s XGT 40VMax batteries, the BL4040F is built for the toughest environments with an impact resistant and shock absorbing casing to protect the battery cells, as well as a triple layer structure to protect against water and dust ingress. XGT batteries also feature Makita’s digital communication system that connects the tool and battery to actively protect against overload, over-discharge and overheating.

Designed for professional landscapers, the HSA 150 R and HSA 150 T are the first single-sided hedge trimmers in the STIHL AP System, comparable in performance to the popular petrol HS 87. Available in lengths of 75cm or 100cm, the HSA 150 comes equipped with a catcher plate as standard, increasing the speed at which the top of hedges can be cut.

150 T has a higher maximum RPM and smaller 30mm tooth spacing, making it better suited to ornamental or fine leaf hedges such as taxus, buxus or privet, where a fine finish is required.
The HSA 150 benefits from a new gearbox design, consisting of a two-step planetary gear. This results in exceptionally high cutting performance and fast cold start up, as well as improved protection of the internal components thanks to the integrated slip clutch.
To help prevent the blades from jamming, the HSA 150 features an innovative anti-blocking system that reverses the motor’s rotational direction to unblock the blades, minimising product downtime and enhancing the efficiency of the tool.
The HSA 150 utilises the same friction optimised, double edged blades that feature on the HS 87 professional petrol models, resulting in long lasting sharpness, a consistently clean cut and ample durability for long cutting seasons. When used with the recommended AP 200 S battery, the HSA 150 R has a maximum working time of 150 minutes; the HSA 150 T’s is up to 140 minutes.

We all do it. We visit a car show room and are seduced by the flashiest, most powerful on the forecourt. A Grand National’s worth of horsepower, 0-60 in less time than it takes to don our designer shades and an engine roar that will make the neighbours green with envy.
Then common sense kicks in and we head over to the four door family salon with good fuel economy and room in the boot for the dog.

chippers which served the tree surgery and arboricultural sectors extremely well. These machines are designed and tested to operate all day every day and are good at it.
The landscape sector use wood chippers too and many invested in Forst machines. However in many cases wood chipping is just one element of a multi-faceted job and the chipper can sit idle for hours waiting to burst into action for a relatively short period of time at the end of the day.
The Forst Cadet 6 has been designed very much with the landscape market in mind but unlike its big, and very successful, brothers it is powered by a 23 HP engine and not a 37HP as in the TT6 or the 40HP in the
ST6P. It carries the same six inch chipping chamber of the more powerful machines so nothing is lost by way of chipping capacity.
Weighing in at just below 750kg means that anyone can tow the chipper with a standard car licence. This has been achieved without losing any strength or production quality, thanks to GRP panels being used to keep the weight down
“The new chipper was developed rapidly, leveraging existing components from our established machines and has been designed specifically to meet the needs of landscapers who require robust, but not necessarily, heavy-duty equipment,” said Forst’s Ben Hennessy.
“It is particularly effective on wet, green, material and offers the durability of Forst’s larger machines in a more compact, affordable package,” added Ben.
The Cadet 6 was introduced to dealers in March and full production has just started with the new chipper expected to be available to the market in June. A tracked version which is of particular interest to the European market has also been developed and should follow later this year.
The new Forst Cadet 6 fits the landscaping market to a tee and proofs that, just with cars, we don’t all need the powerful and the flash to carry out the tasks for which it is needed.
