Annual Report Empowering Leaders with Purpose

Letter from the Executive Director Dear friends and supporters, What wonderful progress our community has made this year expanding and broadening our impact. I am thankful each day for the deep engagement of our faculty, staff, and students as they join in experiential learning to improve themselves and become our future leaders. I am particularly humbled by the generosity of our alumni and friends, giving time, talent, and treasure.

Together, we are demonstrating how the selfless actions of individuals can collectively drive our community to higher achievements, especially when we each focus on making other people heroes. Rallying around our mission, “Empowering Leaders With Purpose,” we doubled the number of classes in our pre-college programs. We expanded the number of undergraduate academic courses and added a new minor, Foundations For Future Leadership. This increased undergraduate enrollments by almost 20%. We also launched our newest graduate program, the Master of Science in Technology Management and Leadership, in addition to adding new content to our existing programs. We empower purpose-driven leaders to see the world anew, collaborate for innovative solutions, and act entrepreneurially. Our comprehensive programs equip graduates with practical skills in problem-solving, systems thinking, strategy, operations, finance, management, leadership, marketing, and effective communication, fostering empathetic leadership for a better world, whether in startups or established enterprises, for-profit or non-profit. Thanks to the generosity of Chuck Auster (A73), with a $4M gift, we launched the Auster Center for Applied Innovation Research (known as the AIR Center), adding a new university resource for the encouragement of transdisciplinary applied innovation across the university, which aims to address our world’s toughest challenges. Additional gifts and grants have enabled us to expand our co-curricular programming, making our pillars of innovation, entrepreneurship, leadership, management, and purpose, more accessible to more people across the university.

03

We’ve been fortunate to continue to attract high caliber, industry experienced faculty and staff to join our community, adding additional diversity and depth to our team. Most important of all, we’ve been able to leverage alumni who, besides living high impact professional lives, have generously returned to campus as advisors, coaches, mentors, judges, speakers, panelists, and instructors, bringing fresh and contemporary insights to our students. They are all wonderful role models for leaders living lives with profound purpose. I thank all of you for your support throughout the past year; with your ideas and engagement, I look forward to continuing to expand our community of transformative leaders with heart, helping to make our world a better place.

With deep appreciation, Kevin Oye

Pre-College Summer Programs Marketing Essentials This summer, 49 high school students participated in the Marketing Essentials Pre-College program, run by TGI in partnership with University College at Tufts. The goal of the Marketing Essentials program is to give students an introduction to fundamental marketing concepts and a practical hands-on approach to the application and use of marketing tools and ideas.

Whatever path they choose to take next, the Marketing Essentials Pre-College summer program will give students the skills and learning that will hopefully ignite a lifelong interest in the dynamic field of marketing.

MSIM Success Our MSIM students go through a unique, accelerated year-long program where they gain the knowledge needed to become a leader, innovator, and entrepreneur. Some of our students go on to work for established enterprises (a handful pictured to the right) and some continue on with their ventures to create their own company (see next page).

I’m currently working as a Manufacturing Specialist at Moderna, which has been a fantastic place to apply the “innovator’s mindset” I developed in the MSIM. Being at a company with cutting-edge technology in the process of scaling up is the perfect opportunity to start applying everything I’ve learned at TGI into my career.

MSEM Success Our MSEM students come from a variety of backgrounds when it comes to industry and experience. Many students continue their education while working at their current place of employment (some of which are pictured to the right). This past year, we had an exciting spike in students receiving career advancement while they were enrolled in the MSEM (see bottom right).

I’m continuing to lead my subsection and be a core team member to this day. My confidence in managing higher level projects has certainly increased as a result, and I’ve gained new skills in project management and increased my business acumen.

DEC is a full service entrepreneurship center that complements our award-winning academic programs with a suite of co-curricular programs, events, competitions, prizes, in-company learning opportunities, student funding opportunities, and the Tufts Venture Accelerator (a full-time summer accelerator for students and young alumni).

Our Offerings Community

Funding & Accelerator Infrastructure

Derby Entrepreneurship Center (DEC) is part of the Tufts Gordon Institute. DEC focuses on the "entrepreneurship" pillar of TGI. We develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skillset among our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members.

Our co-curricular offerings are available to undergraduate and graduate students across all 11 schools and colleges at Tufts. Our ambition is to build entrepreneurial leaders at Tufts, giving them the training and confidence to realize their ambitions, wherever their careers may take them.

Tufts students are incredibly creative and innovative. They have passion, drive, and hunger - but they don't always know where to begin. We give them the tools and mental models to take the first step, to turn an idea into action. I absolutely love seeing the light in a student's eyes when they realize 'I get this, I can do it, and I know how I can realize my purpose and impact!' Program Highlights: Competitions & Prizes Competitions and prizes have a crucial role to play in our program portfolio; they act as a forcing function that encourages aspiring innovators and entrepreneurs to start developing their ideas. Through the application, pitch practice, and competition process, students work on business fundamentals, hone their communication skills, and most importantly, gain self confidence. All of these are skills that our students find useful long after competitions have concluded and prizes have been awarded.

Tufts Venture Accelerator's impact on our venture has been profound, opening up new possibilities and honing our entrepreneurial mindset. Connecting with mentors through TVA allowed us to explore new avenues for growth and a brighter future. Nikita Vardiparti & Sushant Swami, Tufts Venture Accelerator 2023 & Fletcher D-Prize Awardee

Applied Innovation Research Innovation and entrepreneurship education at Tufts University just received a big boost. A generous gift of $4 million from alumnus, Chuck F. Auster, A73, the Chairman of the Board of Advisors at the Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts (DEC), will create the Auster Center for Applied Innovation Research (AIR). The AIR Center at Tufts Gordon Institute will promote innovation in solving complex societal challenges through a transdisciplinary approach that spans social sciences, natural sciences, and technology for the public good. Through its research, it will enhance our understanding of how innovation can be systematically fostered and applied to future challenges. The center will support and fund Tufts faculty, students, and staff to explore novel ways to solve big problems and achieve impact through applied innovation. The Auster Center for Applied Innovation Research will be part of the Tufts Gordon Institute (TGI), and complement the work of its sister organization, the Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts (DEC).

I am extremely excited to be able to give back to my alma mater and provide this gift to support innovation and entrepreneurship among the students, faculty, and staff at Tufts University. This cause is very dear to my heart, and I am both honored and humbled that this new center will play such a pivotal role in advancing applied innovation research at Tufts. Alumni Giving Back Here at Tufts Gordon Institute, we are lucky to have a large community of alumni who are willing to volunteer their time to come back and support our students, staff, and programs. There are many ways our alumni stay connected to the TGI community – here are just few: - Volunteer to be on a panel as a speaker - Return to campus for an in-class fireside chat - Join industry leaders as a judge for our Innovation Sprints - Become a member of the Industry Advisory Council - Donate a monetary gift - Teach a class as a professor or a guest lecturer

Three TGI alumni, Ted Yuan (MSIM), Katrin Knauf (MSEM), and Sarah Drury (MSIM) volunteered to judge our May 2023 MSIM Innovation Sprint Finals.

43 Sandy Rosenberg, Tufts University alumni 1990, joined the Tufts Gordon Institute team this past year as our first Executive in Residence (XIR). As XIR, Sandy will serve as a mentor and resource to any students, faculty, or staff at Tufts Gordon Institute and the greater Tufts community seeking to launch a new venture, scale their existing startup, or grow professionally through a career transition.

Every February, we host a mentor matching event for our MSIM students. The purpose of this event is to introduce our students to professionals who can help them move forward with their Innovation Sprints. This past year, Ryan Flood (MSEM), Eric Campbell (MSEM), and Catherine Bannish (MSEM) volunteered to become mentors.

In November, the Derby Entrepreneurship Center hosted the Ideas Competition finals where students pitched their venture ideas for prizes of up to $1,000. ENT minor alumni Hillary Sieber, Timi Dayo-Kayode and Sam Kessel volunteered to judge the competition.

To start off the school year, our orientation included a panel of MSIM alumni: from left to right: Beverly Kodhek, James Aronson, Ben Webb, Laura Taraboanta, and Jean Pham.

MSIM Discovery Fund The MSIM Discovery Funds enables alumni to give back in a way that pays it forward to help the next generation of students find their way and discover their potential to develop personally and professionally during their time at Tufts Gordon Institute and as part of the MSIM program. The funds will specifically allow students, both as individuals and teams, to finance a variety of activities related to their Sprint projects and other opportunities that may arise during their studies; whether that is attending a conference, building a prototype, entering a competition, or acquiring new skills or special equipment, to name but a few.

Above are photos of past Innovation Sprint teams at conferences. These are examples of events the Discovery Fund would help students attend.

The Tufts Entrepreneurial Network (TEN) is a volunteerlead community that works closely with Derby Entrepreneurship Center to build a vibrant ecosystem for innovators and entrepreneurs among Tufts alumni across all business, professional, and educational sectors. In coordination with DEC, TEN hosts multiple networking and small-scale events per year around the world, as well as virtual speaker events and networking opportunities throughout the year.

Networking Night

This year, Tufts Gordon Institute renewed its' focus on community-building with in-person events that celebrate the diverse TGI community, forge new connections among alumni and students, and provide an opportunity for everyone to share their unique insights on topical issues. One such event was the ChatGPT Networking Night, which featured a community discussion panel made up of students and alumni about the real impact ChatGPT has had on their work, updates on the latest news from Tufts Gordon Institute, and a social hour with plenty of opportunity for networking.
