Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 2

Panhellenic President’s Letter

Hello,

Welcome to California State University, Fullerton! My name is Caiya Calero, and I am the Panhellenic President here at CSUF. It is my honor to welcome you to campus and to this exciting next chapter of your life.

As you become acquainted with Fullerton, I highly encourage you to consider going through primary recruitment this fall. Being part of a Panhellenic sorority can lead to lifelong friends, connections and deep personal growth, and is a great way to get involved on campus and the community at-large.

Being involved on campus and the surrounding community through Panhellenic has been one of my greatest joys during my time at CSUF. I have met my best friends and been involved in amazing philanthropy opportunities, and it has made my overall time at CSUF unforgettable. If you are an incoming or returning student, we look forward to meet you through fall recruitment. Our Panhellenic community welcomes everyone with open arms, and our chapters cannot wait to meet each and every one of you.

Signed,

California State University, Fullerton 3

PANHELLENIC

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 6

What is Panhellenic?

Panhellenic is the governing body for the six National Panhellenic Conference womens’ sororities here at California State University, Fullerton: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Made up of members from different sororities, the Panhellenic Executive Board is responsible for maintaining a standard of academic excellence and intellectual development, as well as personal and professional growth. We do so through community service/philanthropy, scholarship programs, and other events designed to promote sisterhood and loyalty throughout our community of 600+ women.

Panhellenic is here to help any and all PNMs, and the goal of Primary Recruitment is to ensure that you match with the chapter that is your best fit. This guidebook hopefully answers all of your questions about recruitment, but please feel free to reach out through our Instagram or email a member of the Recruitment Team if you need more clarification!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to attend every recruitment event?

Yes! By attending every event you are invited to during recruitment, you will maximize your chances of finding the sorority best for you and receiving a bid.

Will every woman going through recruitment get a bid?

Unfortunately, going through recruitment does not guarantee a bid. You are still able to COB afterwards/in spring, and we encourage you to sign up for recruitment next fall!

Do I have to be a freshman to participate?

Transfer and current undergraduate students are welcome!

When does Registration close?

September 3rd, 2023 at 11:00pm, PST.

How much does it cost to be in a sorority?

The cost of dues will vary between chapters. During the recruitment process, more specific information on finances will be offered.

If I go through recruitment, am I obligated to join a sorority?

No, you are not! Please read through the MRABA section for more details on what this means for your future eligibility, but you are free to decline a bid/drop the recruitment process at any point in time, for any reason.

What if I only want to be in a certain sorority?

Please keep an open mind! You might find that you like another chapter better, and focusing on only one sorority will severely limit your chances of receiving a bid.

How much does it cost to register for recruitment?

Recruitment will cost $65 this year, covering t-shirts, meals, and three days of recruitment.

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 10

What if I’m a Legacy? Will that guarantee me a bid?

We’re so excited to have you participate! There will be a spot to indicate your status on the registration form, but it will not promise you a bid to that specific sorority.

Where can alumnae recommendations be submitted?

There are links in the @csufpanhellenic Instagram bio. Each one will be labeled with a specific sorority –– alumnae recommendations are not necessary, but always welcome!

Financial Information

Sororities do come with a financial commitment. Generally, finances are paid out in the form of what we call ‘dues’, which are monthly charges that will pay for chapter operations, and may include merchandise, social events, philanthropies, and even overnight trips.

Every sorority has a different cost of dues. Generally, one-time fees such as badges/furnishing fees will make your first semester or year slightly more expensive. Living in a chapter house might also affect the cost of your dues.

Full financial transparency will be provided during orientation and recruitment, but the cost of the first semester can range from $950 to $1,250. Most, if not all, sororities also offer payment plans, where you will able to pay your dues in installments –– all at once, weekly, biweekly, etc. –– depending on your financial needs.

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 16

Dear Potential New Members,

My name is Genevieve Khoury and I am the Chapter President of Alpha Chi Omega. I am so excited to meet all of you this recruitment season! Your experience here at CSUF is what YOU make of it and going Panhellenic is a great way to get involved!

When I joined Alpha Chi Omega, I was a freshman amid the COVID-19 pandemic. I was unsure about what to expect from an online recruitment process, but nonetheless, I ended up running home and finding my forever best friends in Alpha Chi Omega! I was welcomed with open (yet virtual) arms and I couldn’t have been happier. If you would’ve told me three years ago I would be on the executive board, let alone the Chapter President, I would’ve never believed you. Yet here I am today, proudly leading my fellow sisters and serving my chapter because of the encouragement and love I receive from them every day.

Some of my most memorable moments so far have come from serving on the executive board and living in the AXO house. Through event planning, representing AXO in community events, or just hanging out on the couch, I met every single one of my best friends in Alpha Chi Omega. We’ve laughed, cried, and created so many memories together that I will cherish always. I am eternally grateful that I decided to go through recruitment because it led me to meeting my forever people.

Alpha Chi Omega has transformed me into the strong woman I am today. This organization has truly helped me grow as an individual, friend, student, sister, and leader. I know that going through the recruitment process may seem intimidating and even nerve-wracking, but my best advice is to be your own authentic self. We are thrilled to meet the REAL you. Always remember to trust the process because you will end up exactly where you are meant to be. Get ready for an experience that you will never forget!

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 18

Dear PNMs,

My name is Lauren Bernard and I am the Chapter President of the Zeta Alpha chapter of Alpha Delta Pi here at CSU Fullerton. I am so excited to get to know all of you as recruitment season gets closer. When I joined Alpha Delta Pi, I was an incoming freshman and my biggest fear was feeling isolated in college at a commuter school. That fear faded immediately as I went through recruitment and met the sisters in ADPi. Every member I met was so welcoming from the start, and running home to Alpha Delta Pi is still one of my favorite memories in college. I met my best friends that day, and I knew that I was home.

ADPi’s philanthropy is the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This foundation provides housing and resources to children and their families who are in need of medical care. My favorite thing about our philanthropy is being able to actually visit our local Ronald McDonald houses and getting to meet the residents. I love that we are able to support RMHC not only through fundraising, but through actual tangible experiences such as hosting events or cooking meals for the children at the house. This is a really special experience that allows us to connect with those in the community that we are supporting.

Going through recruitment can feel like an intimidating process, and I promise you are not alone in that feeling. The best advice I could give you is to stay true to yourself and enjoy the process as much as possible. I encourage you to trust this process and you will end up where you are truly meant to be. We all cannot wait to meet you, so please remember to relax, take a breath, and enjoy this experience, as there is truly nothing like it. I am so excited for you all, and I wish you the best of luck in finding your forever homes!

Loyally,

California State University, Fullerton 19

Dear PNMS,

My name is Sofia Valadez. I am the Delta Zeta president for 2023 at our Iota Upsilon chapter at CSUF. I am a senior with a Double Major in Civil Engineering and American Studies. Through my major I realized I wanted to join a community that uplifted women, and that is when I found Delta Zeta. I want to first commend you for being interested in going through the recruitment process –– it is truly an experience that will build you up and lead you to many great friendships. Delta Zeta has created a college experience for myself that I never imagined possible, as well as it has given me the opportunity to grow through different leadership positions before having the honor to lead as President. The experience I have had in Delta Zeta is one that I hope all of you can have in whichever chapter best fits you.

Not only has Delta Zeta helped me create lifelong friendships and take on leadership positions, it has given me the opportunity to give back to those around me. Our philanthropy supports speech and hearing and through this Delta Zeta works hard every semester to create events so we can donate funds to our philanthropic partners.

As you think about going through recruitment all I ask is that you keep an open mind and be your authentic self because at the end of the process I promise you you’ll end up with those whose values align most with yours. The sisters of Delta Zeta wish you the best through your college endeavors and hope you can find your forever home here at CSUF!

Truly,

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 22

Dear PNM,

My Name is Matie Dool and I am the Chapter President of Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Delta! I am so beyond excited that you have interest in joining the Panhellenic community at California State University, Fullerton! Going through Recruitment is such an unforgettable experience and has been one of the best decisions I ever made throughout my college experience! Walking into Gamma Phi during recruitment was the best feeling in the world and I wish that experience for everyone. I was so excited and felt such a genuine connection. Those feelings have truly never faded.

I joined Gamma Phi in Fall of 2020 during the pandemic. I was so nervous to leave my hometown and jump into the world but joining a sorority made that transition easy! In Gamma Phi, I have found a second home and sisters who motivate me, challenge me, and care about me and the ideals of Gamma Phi Beta. Through this chapter I can truly say that I have met my friends for life, the girls who will stand next to me on my wedding day. The bond I share with every woman in this chapter is one that will never be replaced and I am so thankful to be a part of it. Though Recruitment is so much fun, I know how intimidating it can be at first. Just remember, the best version of yourself is when you are being yourself! Also, do not forget to have fun! Opening your bid and running into the arms of 100 new sisters who will have your back through everything is an unforgettable experience, and I cannot wait for you to experience that too! I have been given so many opportunities because of this chapter, and I can’t wait for you to experience what Gamma Phi has to offer you and meet all the genuine girls I get to call my sisters. We can’t wait to meet you!

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 24

Dear PNM,

My name is Henna Siddiq and I am the President of Sigma Kappa, Epsilon Tau chapter. I am so thrilled to get to know all of you as we near recruitment! My sophomore year, I moved to Fullerton and was placed with roommates I didn’t know, while having a completely virtual campus life. My new home felt very foreign to me. New people, new personalities, new structure - it felt like a new life. My next semester, campus life was beginning to go back to normal. That was the semester that I decided to take a leap of faith and join Sigma Kappa. I quickly found myself in a home that I knew that I belonged in. The incredible people that I’ve met during my time in Sigma Kappa have become family to me, and I am so proud to call them my sisters.

Our five philanthropies, The Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine Seacoast Mission, and The Alzheimer’s Association, are the heart of Sigma Kappa. The Alzheimer’s Association in particular really resonates with me and my family and gave me an emotional connection to Sigma Kappa, knowing that we are supporting a cause to one day find an end to the disease.

Going through recruitment can seem intimidating and I know you might be a little anxious, but it’s normal to feel this way, and I remember feeling exactly the same before I first joined. My advice to you is to be your truest self and be open-minded to find the home that will best fit you. Have fun, enjoy the experiences getting to know the Panhellenic community, your fellow PNMs, and cherish the memories! I cannot wait to meet you, and I am so excited for you all to find your home away from home!

See you soon,

California State University, Fullerton 25

Dear PNM,

My name is Tessa Aldridge and I am the Chapter President of the Theta Phi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha. Recruitment is truly a special and exciting time for everyone involved and I cannot wait to meet you all and give you a place to call home. My recruitment process looked a little different as I had joined during the Covid-19 pandemic, but even due to these unfortunate circumstances, I was able to create bonds and friendships that I know will never be broken. I was welcomed with so much love and enthusiasm that I knew Zeta Tau Alpha was the right place for me. My sisters and I are so excited to be able to show you what our sisterhood is to us and to you all.

As an organization, our main purpose is to educate all on our philanthropy which is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. Breast Cancer affects 1 in every 8 women and so our members have very personal connections to our cause. We are lucky enough that through national partnerships, campus, and community initiatives, we can spread education and awareness as we are determined to find a cause to end this disease.

Going through recruitment can be a bit scary, but through the process you’re able to find a place to be your second home and make friendships that will last a lifetime. ZTA is excited to meet you all and give you an opportunity to show us the true and authentic self that you are! We cannot wait to welcome you all with open arms during Fall Recruitment and tell you what ZTA is about!

With Love,

RECRUITMENT

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 28

Vice President of Recruitment’s Letter

Dear PNM,

Welcome to Cal State Fullerton! If you already attend CSUF, thanks for checking out the Panhellenic community! We’re happy to have you!

We are thrilled to embark on the the journey of primary recruitment with you. Finding a community at college is an exciting experience, and we want to do everything we can to help you find your home with us at CSUF. Our six Panhellenic sororities were established to uplift each member and support one another as we pass through our collegiate years, finding our footing in life. We also like to have fun in the process, with sisterhood bonding events, formals, and FSL (Fraternity and Sorority Life) bonding events. We do our best to support our community by raising money for different philanthropies as well. The Panhellenic community has so much to offer during and after college.

Our hope is that whether or not you find a Panhellenic sorority to call home, you will find a supportive community with friends that will last a lifetime during your time at college. A big goal of ours for this year’s primary recruitment is to do everything we can to help each member feel empowered to be themselves throughout the process. We hope you find a sorority where you feel comfortable being yourself, and I can’t wait to see how you all bloom and grow in whatever community you find at CSUF!

Sincerely,

California State University, Fullerton 29

How Recruitment Works

Fall Primary Recruitment in 2023 will take place from September 8th to September 11th, from Friday to Monday. Every Potential New Member (PNM) going through recruitment is obligated to meet with all six chapters, and may be offered a bid from only one during the formal process. The full recruitment schedule will be released on Instagram @csufpanhellenic over the summer, and will be reviewed at Orientation.

Times will vary per day, but please think of Friday through Sunday as full day events, and keep that weekend fully open! Friday will be split into morning and afternoon events to accomodate for classes. The event on Monday will also begin around 4pm, and last through the evening.

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 30

Orientation (September 5th & 6th, 6-8pm) Both orientations will take place in TSU Pavilion BC.

Day One (Friday, September 8th)

Every PNM will meet with all six chapters, in short blocks of time we call “parties”. After attending all six parties, you will rank the chapters in preference order. Please let us know on the application form if you have a Friday class.

Day Two (Saturday, September 9th)

On the second day, you will recieve a list of up to four chapters that you will meet with during slightly longer parties with a focus on each group’s philanthropies. Afterwards, you will be able to rank those chapters in preference order.

Day Three (Sunday, September 10th)

The third day is also known as Preference Night, where you will get to meet with maximum two chapters at their individual houses. These parties are more serious. Transportation from campus to the houses will be provided. Afterwards, you will submit your final ranking.

Bid Day (Monday, September 11th)

This is the day when you will find out if you’ve received a bid to join a sorority. The Running Home ceremony, where bids are opened, will take place around 4pm on campus. Your new sorority will then take you to a separate venue to celebrate!

California State University, Fullerton 31

Recruitment Guides

Recruitment Guides are active members from each sorority who have temporarily stepped away from their chapters. This is in order for them to become Panhellenic representatives with the purpose of impartially guiding PNMs during the recruitment process.

During recruitment, you will be split into groups and assigned a Recruitment Guide. Your Recruitment Guide will reach out to you after your application has been submitted and recruitment weekend is closer.

Please let your Recruitment Guide know of any problems, and rely on them for guidance/support. They have been trained to counsel you during recruitment, and will give you unbiased advice based on your best interests.

If you are having problems relating to your Recruitment Guide, please reach out to @csufpanhellenic or email our Vice President of Recruitment Guides, Christina Soares.

Recruitment Tips

– Be yourself! Sororities want to meet the real you –– trying to be someone else will only hurt your experience in the future. You want a bid from the chapter that appreciates you.

– Be careful when talking about sororities to those around you. You never know what connections people have, and many Panhellenic active members have friends in other chapters.

– Social media is not everything. To add to that, don’t listen to what other people tell you about a sorority’s reputation/ rumors being passed around. Stay neutral, and form your own conclusions based on the conversations you have during recruitment.

– Be excited to meet people! Being positive always makes a better impression, and it never hurts.

– Make friends with the other girls going through recruitment! Even if you don’t end up in the same sorority, Panhellenic friendships can be just as lifelong.

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 36

Managing Expectations

Throughout the formal recruitment process, it is probable that some PNMs will not receive an invitation to their topranked chapter(s), or not receive a bid from their first choice house on Bid Day. Please keep an open mind throughout the entire recruitment process. Each chapter has its own set of values, personalities, and opportunities, which you might not be aware of until you meet them.

Additionally, not every PNM will be able to move through all three days or receive a bid. Recruitment is a mutual selection process, and just as PNMs do, chapters will submit lists to determine who they would like to invite back. Please know that not receiving an invitation from what you feel are your top houses can happen for a myriad of reasons, and contact your Recruitment Guide for support if needed.

California State University, Fullerton 37

MRABA

The Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) is a document that you will sign after Preference Night, and before you receive a bid. Signing this document means that you are willing to accept bids from whichever sororities you list (up to two, as you are only eligible to receive a bid from a sorority you attended Preference Night for).

Until you sign the MRABA, you are able to drop out of the recruitment process at any time, for any reason, without reprecussions. If you sign the MRABA, receive a bid, and choose not to accept it, you will not be eligible to join a sorority until next fall recruitment in 2024. This means you will not be able to receive a bid from another sorority through COB or spring recruitment.

Signing the MRABA does not guarantee that you will receive a bid. If this happens, you will be contacted before Bid Day occurs.

Panhellenic Recruitment 2023 38

Before Making Your Decision

For those of you who were invited to two chapters on preference night, you now have a huge choice to make! We would like to reiterate the importance of keeping an open mind. Recruitment may not have gone exactly the way you expected, but it is still an extremely unique experience, and can impact life beyond your college years.

Panhellenic’s advice is that the only person you discuss your choice with is your Recruitment Guide. She is here to be unbiased. Rank chapters according to how connected you feel to them, and not based on your friends, social media, or any other outside pressure.

Additionally, please rank as many chapters as you are invited back to on Preference Night. Only listing one chapter when you have attended two parties is known as ‘suicide bidding’ or ‘single intentional bidding’. This will bump you to bottom priority when giving out bids, and will hurt your chances of getting your top choice. Rank chapters just as you did on the first two days, and trust the recruitment process!

Continuous Open Bidding (COB)

If you do not complete the formal recruitment process, or do not receive a bid, you may still have a chance to join one of our chapters. Chapters that do not reach maximum membership during recruitment may still informally recruit members to fill open spaces. Women interested in COB can let Panhellenic know, and may be contacted by the participating chapters through social media (Instagram, etc.).

Please note that both after recruitment/in spring NOT ALL CHAPTERS will be recruiting informally. Your best opportunity to ensure you meet all six chapters is to participate in primary recruitment this fall.
