The Association of Scientific Technical & Managerial Staff ASSET was formed in 1917 as the National Foremen's Association (NFA) by a small group of foremen to cover foremen and those who held an equivalent position.

Membership covered engineering, shipbuilding, railway workshops and armaments.

In 1920 it affiliated to the TUC and in 1923 amalgamated with the Amalgamated Managers' and Foremen's Association, which had also been formed in 1917, and retained the title NFA.

In 1942 the NFA changed its name to the Association of Supervisory Staff and Engineering Technicians and then to the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians in 1946.

In 1935 a number of socialist scientists joined the Association changing its position back towards trade unionism.

The National Union of Scientific Workers was founded in 1918; It competed with the Institution of Professional Civil Servants, British Association of Chemists and the National Association of Industrial Chemists.

While the other organisations had members only in the civil service or industry respectively, the NUSW recruited senior academic scientists, junior public service and industrial scientists. Scientists tended to join one of the civil service or industrial specialist unions rather than the ‘general’ NUSW.

During the war the association recruited a large number of scientists and technicians in the defence sector and post war in public services and industry.

In 1968 the Association of Scientific Workers and the Association of Supervisory Staff Executives and Techicians amalgamated to form the Association of Scientific Technical and Managerial Staff

In response to the poor recruitment it changed its name to the Association of Scientific Workers in 1927 and claimed to no longer be a trade union.

At the first ASTMS rules revision conferences a number of former ASSET branches attempted to change the unions name to the Association of Scientists Supervisors Executives and Technicians or ASSET but failed.

ASTMS grew by organising and arranging mergers with smaller unions and staff associations.

The first merger took place in 1969 with the National Association of Footwear Supervisory Staff and the last in 1986 with the Sun Alliance and London Staff Association in 1986.

Clive Jenkins the ASTMS General Secretary target senior managers in industry for organisation claiming he was organising the middle classes.

He also brought in staff associations that were neither scientific, technical or managerial.

The mergers consolidated its membership in the NHS and gave the union a foothold in banking and insurance which went on to be the unions largest section.

The Community and District Nursing Association The Historical Directory of Trade Unions wrongly lists the formation date of the District Nursing Association as 1939.

The District Nursing Association was formed in 1971 and was based in Edinburgh.

Nursing Association keeping the same badge but with the new name.

The CDNA affiliated to the Trades Union Congress in 1997.

The District Nursing Association represented district nurses but was not represented on the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council,

In 1984 the union opened its doors to all community nursing staff and changed its name to the Community and District

The GMB had a working relationship with the CDNA and provided education services advice and support.

In 2010 the union voted to become part of the GMB,

Trades Union Councils ***

Local groups of trade unionists elected by union branches who live/work in the area, and Trade Union branches can and do affiliate to their local TUC branches.

`

Trades Union Councils promote working- class solidarity in local communities and play a crucial role to the trade union movement.

TCs activities are guided by an annual programme of work determined by their annual conference, they include joint campaigns on health, education welfare and Transport.

The UK Alliance of Organised Trades, founded in Sheffield was the immediate forerunner of the TUC.

And the Councils are always prominent and out in staunch support of local Trade union disputes and of course Mayday Galas and demos.

The first use of the term Trades Councils was recorded in 1837 at the United Trades Council of Manchester & Salford

Manchester & Salford Trades Union Council were instrumental in the formation of the TUC in 1868 and played a significant role in the Manchester area, in fact still do to this day.

The same can be said regarding Glasgow Trades Council who helped form the STUC in 1897 Trades Union Councils leading the way.

Derby Silk Mill The original Silk Mill was built in 1717 formerly known as Derby Industrial Museum, the redevelopment scheme started in 2016 and the museum reopened under the new name of the Museum of Making in 2021 This is no ordinary museum; it has been created and built by the people and Industries of Derby.

The Derby lock-out strike of 1833 is considered to be a key moment in working class identity and is commemorated every year on June 23rd in Derby 1833 was also the year of the formation of the Grand National Consolidated Trades Union (GNCTU)

Glasgow Trades Council Calton Weavers May Day

Calton weavers strike of 1787 was the earliest industrial dispute in Scottish history when troops fired on demonstrators killing six, Calton at the time was a hand weaving community just outside Glasgow.
