Welcome

Thanks to the MRC Warwick for their help and for putting our newsletters in their online catalogue, and the WCML again for allowing us to photograph, this time around the builders (OBS) trowels.

If all goes to plan, we will be looking at the brass and metal workers unions in the next edition so if you have anything to add please send them in.

We do need your assistance, there are lots of collections, knowledge, and info to tap into!

So, Articles, photos, badges to sell/swop, ideas, and suggestions for future publications can be sent in at any time, this is important if we are to sustain four publications per year.

A special Congress of the TUC led to the formation of the GFTU in 1899 and 124 years on the GFTU is affiliated unions at their National Office in Quorn and they offer the very best facilities to undertake their training programmes for Union officials and reps.

As previously reported the TUBCS was asked by the GS Doug Nichols if we could assist in the cataloguing of his large collection of Trade Union and Political Badges, gathered from various campaigns, delegations, demos and unions over the years, and assist in setting up a permanent display at their HQ Quorn Grange Hotel.

unlike some others who pay no heed to Union badges (Symbols of Solidarity) has undertaken this project which will be of benefit to all who attend GFTU for training and other union activities.

National Union of Water Works Employees

The union was founded in 1906 as the Metropolitan Water Board Employees' Association.

The union was initially a staff association/company union for London’s Metropolitan Water Board board's chair acting as the association’s president.

The Water Board employees were joining the National Union of Corporation Workers Metropolitan Water Board branch in increasing numbers which had applied for recognition.

The NUCW had recruited a third

In 1920, the union changed its name to the National Union of Water Works Employees to attract members from outside London.

The union affiliated to the TUC in 1964 and for the remainder of the sixties and early seventies was subject of a number of TUC inquiries over clashes with the other water unions NUPE, TGWU, GMWU, NALGO and the craft unions.

In 1971 the union disobeyed the instructions of the TUC and registered under the Industrial relations act and so was expelled from the TUC.

The union began talks regarding a merger with the GMWU in 1969.

In 1972 the union transferred its engagements to the GMWU.
