0vera long weekend," that's about how long it took Mike Chiurco to become Seton's new varsity football head coach. Although Coach Chiurco's move to Seton was quick, he is no stranger to the game. He has been coaching for over twenty-five years, from the high school level all the way to professional football.

After coaching with the Arizona Cardinals for the past five years, coming to Seton was a bit of an adjustment. "You gotta remember that they are high school kids, not professional athletes." Coach Chiurco said when he came to Seton the team "seemed focused" and "they had some good leadership and they worked hard."

Coaching is what Coach Chiurco loves to do. "At the end of the day I want them to play hard and I want them to be good people.

0 Captain, My Captain Senior captians, Vincent Wallace, Michael Kenney, Michael Van Bruwaene, and Peter Fugger run out to the field for the

toss.

Football is more than wins and losses. I want them to say when they walk away from here that I helped them at some point."

One of Chiurco's main focal points of this season isn't just to win games; he emphasized the idea of "creating an essence of 'team'. We aren't about individuals." Coach Chiurco hopes his players take a lot away from him as a coach, and that playing a sport can teach you a lot of life lessons. "Sports in

general, not just football, teach you a lot of things: how to overcome adversities in your life, how to be a part of a team, and how to be accountable to someone else." He went on to say that there are a lot of working parts to a football play and that "all eleven people need to do their job. So, those other ten people are depending on you to do what you are supposed to do."

The odds for an amateur are one in 12,500 according to golfdigest.com. Mrs. Kathleen Evans, the Seton athletics secretary, was awestruck.

"People just don't get holes-in-one," Evans said. "It's not easy. When you get a hole-in-one in a professional golf tournament, you win a car or something ."

oshua Carnberg and Trevor Snedeker have been described by many as the "peanut butter and jelly" of the cross country team. Their energy is contagious, and their bond strengthens the team as a whole.

Cross country is no walk in the park. The entire Sentinel team trains hard, often running anywhere from 4 to 7 miles in the early morning heat. It takes effort to run, but it takes passion to keep running. Both Carnberg and Snedeker have this passion. Josh recalled, "I

started running probably like 3rd or 4th grade when my morn started taking me to my school's running club." Trevor, on the other hand, did not start running until high school.

They crack jokes together. They laugh with one another. They support each other. These Sentinels will never stop running together.

Don't worry about the route; we'll srow you the way

At practice the cross country team runs to different parks around Seton to get their weekly milage in. The three routes they take are designed so that the athletes run through grass, dirt, sidewalks, roads, and even rocks. The three parks that they run to are Arrowhead, Galveston, and Goodman. The runners run anywhere between 3 to 6 miles per practice.

Ofter a few years of playing volleyball, Maggie Scranton endured a brachial plexus injury, which damaged her spinal cor nd caused pain to travel down her arm. Maggie had to undergo surgery. This injury was difficult for her to accept, but it brought her an opportunity that changed her perception on the situation.

During a volleyball conference in Colorado, Maggie and her mom noticed the paralympic team playing. Her mom approached the coaches and explained her injury. Maggie says that "they were immediately intrigued." She explains that

"people assume you have to have something missing when in reality there are a lot of different things that qualify." The recruiting coach approached her at the conference, and they immediately clicked. In early August, Maggie was invited to the paralympic base camp in Oklahoma. She talks about how different the experience was because of the fact that she played sitting volleyball. It was Maggie's first time playing this version of the sport, and she says that it is a "way different dynamic." She got invited back to a starters camp in October and December to practice with the Olympic team.

Maggie wants to keep volleyball in her life, "not only as a passion, but as a release."

Returning to the gym this season was nothing short of a challenge for Seton's varsity girls basketball team. Their assistant coach, Tiffany Tate-Eckes, passed away on September 29, 2018, after her lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis. Coach Tate was far more than just a basketball coach for her players; she was their motivation. "Tiff was always the person who motivated us when we felt like we couldn't go anymore," senior Megan Giacobbi said. Even though Tate wasn't Catholic, her faith was evident in her coaching. "The biggest thing that she taught me is to play for God and give Him glory whether we win or lose," senior Camille Abele said. Coach Tiff inspired this season's motto, "Battle Born." Megan went on to say that "she fought her battle until the very end and set an example for all of us this season to follow."

Not only was this new season a battle without Coach Tate, but the Sentinels came off a three-peat, and have the same expectation of another state title. With some fresh feet on the team, including freshmen Lee Willis, Sasha Daniel, and Lexi McNabb, the Sentinels have a bright future. Megan, who played her third year on varsity this season, mentioned "the talent on the team this year is really strong, but honestly that doesn't mean anything. We have won games against more talented teams than ourselves simply because we outwork or out hustle them." For the Lady Sentinels, this season comes down to who is willing to fight the battle it will take to make it to that championship.

Seton's varsity boys basketball team had a winning season. Going 16-6, they had a tough schedule, playing nationally ranked Shadow Mountain and only losing by 11 points. They put up a good battle each game. Each loss Seton has had was only ever by three to five points in the end. Although

For Each Other

The girls soccer team has worked very hard on reaching their goals and working together. A large goal for this season was to make it to state. The team has worked towards this goal by strengthening team bonds.Working together on the field is hard to do when the girl's don't have quality relationships with each other.

Alysa Trevino, a junior on the girls soccer team, explains the closeness of the team saying,"Teamwork is very important. Being close helps out with this because the closer we are the better we are going to play on the field. Teamwork is all about knowing each other on and off the field."

Before every team huddles up to pray for each other and chant "FEOFAW!" This translates to "For Each Other Find A Way." The girls have focused their pregame energy into prayer and passion to mentally prepare them for the game ahead. Being close with the other girls on the team makes it easier to be positive and support each other. The team works together on making themselves better as a whole.

he Seton Boy's Soccer team has officially bestowed their title of MVP for the 2018-19 season. The receiver of this coveted honor is senior Harrison Geryk. For years before deciding to play on a high school soccer team, Geryk had already learned the basics of the sport. "I just wanted to play a sport...plus, it wasn't new to me," He says, expressing his reasons for joining, "the environment was fun, and I had lots of friends on the team."

However, before being given the MVP title, Geryk emphasizes that there were steps for improvement. "I had to improve in skills of kicking the ball. And eventually, I got more confident playing the sport." Through practice on and off the field, through playing goalie to playing forward, and "switching positions with other players as the season went on," Harrison Geryk earned his way to MVP.

Geryk says that he will "miss friends and messing around" the most, and wants to give a special shoutout to sophomore Cameron Lowery, hoping that next year's soccer players will take his advice to heart.

"Being a freshman on varsity is amazing because it shows me that the coach sees something in me," Castillo says, expressing his gratitude for being on the team. He states that the sport has "changed [his] life," and hopes to continue his soccer career past high school.

Out of the selection of older boys, freshman Lucas Eviston was voted to become captain of the varsity wrestling team. His seven years of wrestling in a club team helped him stand out as a candidate, although "not everyone respected [him] at the time," Eviston said. Becoming a captain of a varsity team as a freshman is an impressive feat considered by most people, but that doesn't cause him to be arrogant. "It's a pretty good feeling, it's honorable," he mentions. Eviston is seen at practice hyping his teammates up, pushing them to aim higher and try their hardest.

A play put on by Seton is much more work than it appears. Not only do actors spend countless hours rehearsing their lines, but also there is a large part at work going on behind the scenes. Almost half of the students working on the play are actually part of the crew making sure the show goes on seamlessly. This graph depicts the percentage of cast versus crew to give an idea of just how much work goes on to put on a production at Seton Catholic.

Twins James and Luke Ryan have been together since birth both on and off of the stage. In the winter musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," the pair of brothers, proved their talent by each earning themselves a large role. Although James received the starring role, Luke is nothing but happy for his brother's success saying, "I am so proud of James and his accomplishment of getting the lead part." James also comments that the casting was well-fitted to their personalities saying "Luke got a good part for who he is as well." James and Luke are no strangers to drama. In fact, the twins have been involved in acting and

drama for the past ten years. They have participated in every single musical Seton has had to offer the three years they've attended. However, James and Luke agreed that "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was special: "A lot of our friends are in it this year, a lot of people tried it out.. .It 's an especially fun cast," James said. Both of the brothers hope to continue their theatrical career at Seton and encourage those who haven't been in a production yet. Luke emphasized, "You have to at least tryout, because it is SO worth it."

at every chance

ith some of her earliest memories being in a tutu and tights, Veronica Borboa has been performing for as long as she can remember. By the age of nine, she was taking about twelve classes per week consisting of tap, ballet, and other forms of dance. After this period, Veronica began competing on Senior Company, an elite dance company for her age group. She dances for both Varsity Porn and cheer, Seton Catholic Dance Company, as well as the musicals. She says that porn, cheer, and dance have taught her a whole new aspect of who she is, but she emphasizes that the musicals have been "one of the most rewarding experiences" for her. The musicals for her have

connected stories in a "different and more cohesive way than individual pieces" she has worked on. She has become a choreographer at Seton, leading to her taking on the same role at the Chandler Youth Theatre. She will soon be choreographing her third show with them.

Veronica's perception on dance has changed since childhood. She says, "It holds a deeper meaning for me than it did before." She expresses that "it is about the passion that I have for the art, and for the desire I have to find myself through dance." Dance for Veronica has turned into becoming about her "will and dedication," and "for the pure joy and beauty of it."

t JUSt the age of three, Zach Barto began his life changing journey of dance At only two years old, he would watch his sister tap dance in admiration . He would await the day he turned three so that he could be enrolled in these classes

Zach says that just from taking his first class at this young of an age, it became his "favorite thing in the world and still is today." He says "when I dance I feel happy, and everything going on melts away." He continually mentions that his dance teammates have become his "second family ."

Zach says that with each performance, he overcomes a little battle. He says he has had stage fright for most of his life, and dance has helped him conquer this. He always feels thankful after a performance because of the impact he leaves on people. His favorite show is called the "Spirit of Christmas" with the Tempe Dance Academy because of how it "embodies the Christmas spirit and our religion." Zach also travels all over the world with his dance group. He has performed all over Europe

Dance Fl

including Disneyland Paris , Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. This was one of his favorite experiences because he got to see the effects his "talents had on people from different countries."

Zach is a well-rounded student who also plays football. He says that it has given him another family in his life. It has helped him with his agility. He can move his feet quicker in order to do better on the line.

Zach was in last years musical, "Kiss me Kate," and he is also in the winter musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. " He says ,

I have become something b igger than mysel f... because he is a performer and also the dance instructor.

For Zach 's future, he plans on performing his dance team's Christmas play every year, as well as continuing to tap. He wants to keep dance in his life because of the family that he has created. They not only help each other with literal dance moves, but also with anything on their minds.

Which history category is most interesting?

Going Down

rs. Martin, Seton's newest history teacher, has always had an inclination for helping others to grasp certain concepts and ideas, so when it came to career choices, she knew she wanted to teach. Mrs. Martin chose history specifically because she had a love for researching and learning more about historic topics. In the past Mrs. Martin worked at Poston junior high, but she especially loves working at Seton, because "working with highschool students allows [her] the freedom to be able to treat [them] almost as adults, which [she] finds pleasant because [the students] are more understanding, and then [she] can be more understanding of [them]." Mrs. Martin's favorite thing to do with her students is battle reenactments because she gets the chance to show them how the environment affects history, and how, 1f certain battles and events didn't happen, or happened differently it could completely change the entire outcome of history. She enjoys being able to interact with her students and learn new things from them everyday. "I never knew how difficult dancing could be. I never knew football could be as challenging as taking a math test. Different students teach me different things, and all around that's the reason I like teaching, because I get to learn everyday from you guys." She adds with a laugh, "I also love learning, so that's a plus."

'

"I desire that my students know that they are loved. So, when they start to come to that realization, that's my favorite thing."

"I think especially hearing about their struggles and seeing how they persevere, I learn a lot about strength and suffering and strength in difficulty; that is the primary thing I learn from my students."

Ms. Bell's Junior theology class was assigned a project that would change the way the students see each other. Group members Margie Mimila, Claire Spink, Sebastian Sturner, Vali Ornelas, Angel Aguilar, Trevor Snedeker, and Sammi Sabol made the decision to tape inspirational sticky notes and posters around the Quad. They even individually wrote sticky notes for every junior and lass stuck them to their lockers, so they would know they are loved. Their main goal in this project was to make a difference in someone's day. This small act of kindness went a long way. Margie Mimila, a group member, recalls, "seeing the reactions of these people really brought joy to my heart. Knowing that one simple little post-it note changed the person 's day. For example, I saw a girl who was crying the whole day she was having a tough day. So I anonymously put a post-it note on her locker, and then she posted about it on social media later saying that at the end of that tough day, she saw that sticky note, and she felt like God was real. She felt like He listened to her. That made me feel like I was doing the right thing."

nvironmental science is defined as a branch of biology focused on the study of the relationships of the natural world and the relationships between organisms and their environments. This year in environmental science Mr. Cassidy and his classes are recycling one can at a time- against a world of waste- in hope to save God's Earth before it is too late. "We are all responsible for taking care of our earth ... We are the shepherds," Mr. Cassidy said. Although he only has a few students compared to a community producing waste each year, the students in the class do everything in their power to clean up our school campus and give back to the community. Mr. Cassidy stresses awareness to the health of our environment. "Whether you are taking this class or not, we all are responsible" Throughout the year, Environmental Science students have been turning in cans for money to either give the money to a charity or reinvest it back into the community. The class also plans to take a field trip to educate the students further on how Environmental Science is carried out on a bigger platform. Above all, Mr. Cassidy wants his students to be aware and act on the cause.

owards the end of the Christmas Break, Chinese Mandarin students went on an exchange trip to Taipei, Taiwan. During the trip, students had the opportunity to attend a school in Taipei in order lo immerse themselves into a new culture and truly see what it is like to be a teenager in Taiwan. Scott Kinsey was one of the senior students who attended the trip and recalls his time in the city saying, "I loved the city. Taipei had very beautiful architecture, with a population of two and a

half million people. It had everything from small shops to seven storied shopping malls." Compared to other exchange trips Seton offers , which tend to be more European based, the Taiwan trip sets itself apart due to the drastic change in culture. Scott noticed this as well while attending school with the Taiwanese students. When asked what he noticed was different while attending the Taipei school compared to attending Seton, Scott replied , "I noticed that they had a very difficult and different curriculum. Students have to take 14 classes. They also need up to 41 credits to graduate from high school." Kinsey also went on to say that he was interested in returning to Taiwan in the future. One of the phrases he used to speak to others in Mandarin was "Ho ji bu "long time no see," which exactly what Scott doesn't want to say to Taiwan anytime soon .

his school year, Dance II, is as stellar as the previous years.

Sophomore Sarah Lopez would describe the class as, "fun," explaining that she is glad she got to meet new people. The best part about performing is the overwhelming support applause from the family and the friends in audience. Dance has forged many new friendships, and Sarah would definitely recommend Dance class to another student. Sarah is also active in cross country, and says that the two different activities blend well together. She is always in shape for the other. Sarah plans to continue participating in Dance class and is excited for all the upcoming performances

he Downtown Chandler Parade of Lights and Tumble-weed tree lighting ceremony has been a wonderful tradition since 1957, drawing a larger crowd every year. This year Seton's National Art Honors Society (NAHS) was invited to create a float and march in the parade. Students and faculty put in a total of fifty hours of work. With this hard

work they were able to put together a float that reflected their theme: Academic Excellence, A World of Opportunity. All together, the float had a total of 1,500 beautiful lights surrounding a Santa sleigh that was filled with all sorts of different gifts. The gifts were meant to represent the gifts that students receive when going to Seton, such as a good Catholic education, unique programs like engineering and numerous AP classes, and many more.

Proud Sentinels Noah Decaro, Sam Apeji, and Samuel Zadel carry the Seton sign, in front of the float, for the parade. Follow the Leader Mrs. Sweador directs the students in placing the paper flowers, made by the students, onto the float. Christmas Time Quan Nguyen, Alex Nguyen, and Anique Ka1jser get ready for the Downtown Chandler Lights Parade. Star of the Show The float made by students is all lit up and ready for the show.

At the Freshman Retreat, Lucas Eviston, was the star in the Christmas skit. It was given to illustrate the real message of Christmas. His role was to show that Christmas isn't merely about receiving, but the true meaning of the season is giving yourself. Eviston said, "I was the gift. I played a dancing clown and did a little dance." In the skit a family took in homeless people as their own, Eviston gave himself to the homeless.

s the students piled into the ornately decorated church of St. Timothy, one could not help but sit in awe of the mural in front of them. On it, many saints were painted to the utmost accuracy, perfectly capturing their personal qualities in one freeze-frame image. These qualities are much like the different qualities students were given in order to separate them into their retreat groups. Juniors had taken a personality test earlier that week, and their results determined the groups they would be placed in. This was important because these retreat groups would talk about their strength and how they can embrace it. Many students agreed that the results of their test was accurate to their

Bond

personality. Keyshon Upchurch, who was placed in the presence group, said, "I was put in this group because presensence is outgomg and people like you and like to be around you."

Throughout the retreat many seniors gave talks on how they had used their strength to help them throughout the past year since they went on their own junior retreat. This retreat teaches students how to use God's gifts once their find their strengths and weaknesses. Our goal as Christians is to eventually become one of those saints on the wall at St. Timothy's church, and this retreat brings juniors one step closer to attaining that goal.

Being nominated Homecoming Queen and King was a golden moment for the senior Seton couple, Sophia Tomlinson and Connor Ellis. They have been together since the beginning of the second semester of freshman year, through the highs and lows.

While Connor and Sophia take their relationship seriously, they met in a light-hearted way. While buying lunch from school, Connor passed Sophia in line. Her first comment to Connor was he looked like

Arnold Palmer on the tea bottle in his hand. This was the catalyst to what their relationship is today.

No matter where we go, we will

While they are pleased with how their relationship survived through high school, they are both looking forward to college life. Connor and Sophia are planning to attend NAU together while growing into their role as adults in the world.

They overcame, grew and learned over the past few months together and made a truly lasting bond. They came in 4th at Regionals and placed 6th at State, a brilliant accomplishment. They are now preparing for Nat10nals and are bound to do amazing. It is a lot of hard work, but it is worth it due to the beautiful moments they have had together this past year. From the first summer cross country practice Chnstina Joslin showed up to in July, it was clear she was not like most runners. She was welcomed onto the team by the coaches just as any incoming freshman would be, with a quick mtroduction and a thank you for choosing to join Cross Country

Joshn was just 13 years old when she joined the team and immediately caught the attention of those around her. The season hadn't started yet, and she was already keeping up with most boys By the time she was in season, she had moved into the top Varsity girl spot and was running with the Varsity boys during every practice. Before long she began placing at meets, winmng medals, and gaming attention in the cross country world. She went on to win sectionals, automatically qualifying for state.

"When I reached the finish lme, I was overcome with physical exhaust10n and happiness at the same time. After I was able to catch my breath and drink some water, the realization that I had won the race h1t me. I felt like all of the hard work and tireless hours of training I had put into running cross country this season

had been all been worth It. ' When the Division III State meet came along Joshn ran even faster, placing 9th m the state being the only freshmen to place in the top ten. Although her state meet was successful Joslm wasn't quite done racing. The following weekend she competed at the Nike CrossFit Regional Championship She competed in the Small school open race with about 213 other girls.

Not only did Joslin place 25th, but also she set a personal record, increasmg her PR by 42 seconds to 19:29. Joslin is currently ranked as one of the fastest freshman and sophomore runners in Arizona . Although Joslin is only a freshman she 1s already thinking about running in college.

'Although I have not dec1ded wh1ch specific college I plan to attend, I have a narrowed down list based on my interests and desired major. I would love to continue running after high school and challenge myself as an athlete.'

After having such a successful freshman Cross Country season, many are excited to see what potential Christina Joslm has for years to come, especially for the upcommg track season

I

There is no such thing as II magic. Th3re is only the swiftness of the hand.

'!'hese words were uttered by no one other than a part-time magician and mag1c enthusiast, whose secret talent has been passed down through Sentmel hallways ever since his arrival. :"he mystery of the identity of this magician still remains prevalent,

leaving some wondenng who, where, and why? Is it a teacher or administrator? Or 1s it Dr. Sorkin, who has been foolmg us all along? Or maybe Mr. Serna has a secret pastime?

Three and a half years ago, th1s magician's life was changed forever when a family friend who was a cook for a mission trip taught him the art of magic. Ever since then, this Sentinel has developed a passion for magic and taught h1mself a wide variety of mmd blowing tricks with the help of his trusty magic books. This magic enthusiast has also been inspired by the performances of Piff the Magic Dragon and Penn & Teller.

I•

I find it really funny, he said, noting how he values the humorous elements of both of these magicians' performances.

Who knew that this part-time magician could be junior Anthony Accurso. He has been able to utilize this secret talent both in and out of the classroom, whether as a conversation starter or as Accurso describes it to" ... freak people out." In the future, this Seton student hopes to utilize his talents in college as a fun way to earn money on the side. Even after Accurso graduates, his card tricks truly do and will continue to fascinate students and teachers alike for years to come.

You have grown and changed so much in that time. We are proud of the man you are becoming - faithful, intelligent, loving, strong, funny, practical and so much more. We celebrate all that you have done to get to this Graduation Day. At times you have been in some tight spaces, but you always hung in there. We believe your ability to step up to various challenges has equipped you for college life. We are SO proud of you! You are in the driver's seat now, and we can't wait to see all the places you will go, things you will learn, and people you will meet along the way.

Your journey began in North Carolina, and we thought for sure you were going to be a Tar Heel fan However God had a different plan and He brought us to Arizona

As we watched you grow, your kindheartedness and amazing artistry are the two traits that never changed Your fascination over Studio Ghibli took us to Japan and love of Murano beads led us to Venice. We know your love of Art will take you to more places. As you continue your journey, always remember that we are cheering for you.

The 2019 Sentinel was created by the Publications class and Publications club at Seton Catholic Preparatory in Chandler, AZ. This book was printed by Jostens Inc., using Yearbook Avenue, Adobe Photoshop CC 2019, Adobe Illustrator CC 2019, and Google Forms. The theme of

the yearbook was chosen by the 2019 staff. The yearbook adviser is Mrs. Tole. The colors used in this book are VT Papnka , Grayscale , black, and white. The text was printed in AYT Rockingham Light in various point sizes, AYT Maximo in various point sizes, in various point sizes, and ALfT !.fOUKHKUL!.f in various point sizes. The staff would like to thank Seton students, faculty, parents, and other volunteers who provided pictures for the yearbook. Special thanks go to Mr. Foor and his photography students and all the teachers who arranged photos and allowed us to enter their classrooms. We appreciate Dr. Sorkin, Mrs. Grindey, and Mrs. Nowak for providing copyediting feedback. Also we appreciate Mrs. Evans and Mr. Buchanan for helping

provide team rosters and feedback. Dear Seton Community,

Holding the yearbook in your hands for the first time is an exciting moment for anyone. Frantically flipping through pages, first thing many people do is ook for themselves and their fnends before finally sitting down and absorbing the highlights of the year. Most kids enjoy and cherish !heir yearbooks. They save them so they can look back on them in the future and remember their "old h1gh school" days. Others toss them in their closet until the book resurfaces again. For me however, the yearbook is so much more than a memento of the year; it's a representation of Seton community. The theme, "A Touch of Gold," is a metaphor for the ngerprint that each and every Seton student leaves behind when they graduate. This year's staff

Shea Eubanks, Mia Vega, Deanna Garcia-Maxwell, Breanna Mooney, Michael Williamson and the Yearbook Club

wanted the book to reflect the idea that everyone leaves their mark behind, collectively making up the Seton community. After three years on the yearbook staff, I believe that this is one of the best yearbooks Seton has produced. Many people don't realize the amount of work put into making a successful publication. Attending events , gathering information, taking photos, designing spreads, managing deadlines , and editing pages are some of the responsibilities required to put together an outstanding book. I hope that the focus of personal stories and the consistency of cutouts throughout the book cause students to realize their importance in the Seton community.

For the future yearbook staff, I encourage you to branch out to new people and be open to new ideas

that will cross your path. Remember that making a yearbook is a team effort that requ ires patience, dedication, and hard work. When you look back at your yearbook, either by yourself or with other people, I hope that you are able to find the memories and the community you may have forgotten over the years. If I could leave any advice behind for future Seton students it would be to put yourself out there. For me, being able to communicate with the whole community is what really made my experience in Yearbook and at Seton so special.

Sincerely,

oach Tiff

Prom Squad

Throughout the year, Prom Committee has worked hard to make Prom a night to remember. They brainstormed what theme to choose, what color schemes to use, what music to play, what food to serve, and so many other ideas that rolled in. The set-up ended up beautiful in the end. The tables had black tablecloths, white chair covers with golden sashes and golden plates, which added to the "1920s" theme. The sparkly design of the cookies, fancy champagne glasses (filled with water), feather centerpieces and well-written placecards added a classy aura to the night. These elements added up to make an unforgettable Prom night.

Sammi Sabol, asked by Thomas Curtin : He asked her to Prom with a punny poster after the Spring Drama Showcase that said "Can you, me, and the Holy Spirit make a sammie at Prom? "

May Lister, asked by Johnny Nguyen: "I was told to sit down in a chair and close my eyes I opened my eyes and he was holding an awesome poster and a bouquet of flowers . I was so surprised and very excited to have the opportunity to go to prom with a long time friend of mme! "

Valentina Ornelas, Cassandra Stoll, Kyle Mendoza Isaac Faulkner Michael Kenney, Skyelar Clubb, Colten Christiensen, Emily Mangone, and Samuel Apeji pose in their classy clothes at Prom. Michael Krohnert and Lauren Martinez

Veronica Borboa, asked by her boyfriend, Nicholas Doroz: He highlighted lines in a The Great Gatsby book to spell out "Prom?" within the pages. He also gave her flowers and some cute little mementos.

Shear an, Sam Mobisson, James Karam, Giovanna Bautista, and Celene Galvan volunteered at a local outreach center, Maggie's Place. After learning about the effects of trauma and poverty on the women and children in need of shelter at Maggie's Place, the ladies packed gift bags and the men assisted with necessary tasks, such as toy cleaning. In the afternoon, students were given real-life scenarios in which they were tasked to resolve challenge that mothers at Maggie's Place face. When asked what the one word take away was from the day, Celene Galvan said, "Family."

Ambassadors from Tullamore, Ireland and Taipei, Taiwan traveled to Seton Catholic Prep on a week long exchange program. During their visit, the ambassadors stayed with students who are a part of the Sister School Connection Club. Throughout the week they attended classes at school, traveled up to Flagstaff and Sedona, and did many other activities with their host families.

Per tradition, the club held a huge potluck dinner to celebrate their visitors. At the party two ambassadors from Taiwan performed a traditional Chinese dance that encapsulates the beauty of Chinese culture.

Alongside the dance, students from Ireland sang traditional Irish songs that everyone took a part in. One song that excited most students was "The Rattling Bog," a long chant song that involved everyone. The visiting ambassadors and Seton students had a great time dancing and singing the night away.

The following day students from Ireland, Taiwan, and Seton took the journey up to Flagstaff and Sedona. Although plans went awry, the club still had a fun time showing the visitors around northern Arizona. They visited Walnut Canyon National Monument, Downtown Flagstaff, Slide Rock State Park, and the Anthem Premium Outlets. One highlight of the day trip was jumping off the rocks into the freezing water at Slide Rock.

"It was a sad moment to see them go home because over the course of the week we made so many memories," ........""' Miranda Pieper said.

The Power of

Academic Decathlon has come a long way over the past few years, especially this past year. Mr. Decker's Academic Decathlon team was quite small last year, but this year many new intellectuals rose up to the challenge. The students in Academic Decathlon worked so hard to learn, understand, and truly value the 1960's The team is like family, proven when Mr. Decker said, "I am looking forward to working with next year's group, but I will miss our current team because they are great kids."

Cole Stickland : "I would say to read the study guides, listen to lectures, but most of all, have fun! In a great environment surrounded by great people, you can accomplish anything!"

Cara Self: "Study everything, eat food and practice your speech."

John Buessing : "Academic Decathlon is something that anyone can get into. As long as you study the materials and remain determined, anyone can make the State team and win medals at the competition."

Kyle Mendoza : "Try your hardest, and read, read, read, and read some more."

Ani que Kaijser : "It would be best if you read every Resource Guide intensively and then make quizzes. If you don't have enough time, at least learn the Cram Kit. That will get you pretty far."

May Lister, Anique Kaijser, Mariah McNally, and Silas Gadd, Jr. answer a question correctly during the Super Quiz at the Red Mountain tournament. It was team tradition to hold up the mascot to celebrate.

Sentinels lend a hand to those that need it most. This year, members of the Fiesta Club seized an opportunity to reach across the globe to San Jose, Bolivia. Along with helping hands from the Sentinel community, Fiesta Club raised over $828 to construct a new playground for the children of San Jose. The idea was born when Senora Hoff visited her hometown and realized that the old playground needed a helping hand, "It broke my heart, they had no place to play." She sent her niece to ask the town's mayor for funding, but their plea was rejected. Determined to take action, she rallied the Seton community together. Fiesta Club raised funds

through Buck-a-Jeans, and Mrs. Henson even donated $200 on behalf of the Latin Club. The San Jose community gathered to rebuild not only the playground, but the children's happiness. The children could not wait, not even for the paint to dry! The joyful kids played on the wet paint, and it had to be repainted. Twice. Sentinels keep watch; the community even started a neighborhood watch program to keep the children safe. So many children are enjoying their new playground, that Fiesta Club plans to build another swing set in the future. For now, the paint has dried, but the

children's happiness never will.

Global Friendships

yA reyW<

Sentinel Mandarin students embarked on a once-in-alifetime trip this January to their sister city, Taipei. The Seton Young Leader Ambassadors who made the trip halfway around the world were Scott Kinsey, Michael Junek, Abbey Tran, James Ryan, and Luke Ryan. The city of Taipei rolled out the red carpet for this Blue Ribbon school. The students were immersed in the culture of their sister city, and had the opportunity to meet many dignitaries. The Taipei City Council warmly welcomed them with an official banquet. They even met the mayor of Taipei, Ko Wen-Je! They visited multiple high schools including Kuang Jen High School and Saint Francis High School. The ambassadors also visited many famous sites including Taipei 101, the National Palace Museum, and the Shifen Waterfall. These Sentinels not only grew new friendships; they strengthened the existing friendship between Phoenix, Arizona, and Taipei, Taiwan.

Before and After The shde had no ladder and the kids had to climb the bars of the swingset to get on the rusted out slide. The pictures on the right show renovations made to the park. Kids couldn't wait to get on it.

Honors for Honors

The Honors French III students performed an original play, written by themselves, at ASU. They carne up with a storyline, writing it out in English at first, and then later

translating it to French. It took about a week to come up with an idea for what the play would be about. After four weeks of practicing and writing it all out, it was finally time to perform their play. Seton has won first place for fifteen years, except two. Unfortunately, they placed second this time. Madame Noudali said, "The play they wrote was really good." The students worked hard and had fun! The play was based on "And Then There Were None" By Agatha Christie. Madame said that every play has to have a dance scene and a fight scene. Fifteen people participated: Audrey Hutchison, Gabriella Kretkowski, Trang Le, John Martinez, Lauren Martinez, Gabrielle Mittun, Clarisse Moran, Valentina Ornelas, Mariana Rodriguez, Christian Ruiz Lopez, Trevor Snedeker, Jacob Steinkamp, Cassandra Stoll, Elizabeth Wallace and Trinity Williams.

Students of the Month

How Do You Become Student of the Month?

Students of the Month are voted for every month by the teaching staff at Seton. Any student can receive this honor. Students are nominated by a point tally system. Each staff member may vote for three students , a first, second, and third pick. First picks receive five points, second receives three points and third receives one point. This system ensures that all students nominated have a fair chance to win.

Mr Korp

A big technology enthusiast, Mr. Korp is the newest addition to our IT team. His primary task is to repair computers and printers wherever it is needed. He is also an expert at "baby-wrangling!" He has a two-year-old daughter who he interacts with very well, and she enjoys playing with him. Rumor has it that he is Mr. Adney's secret twin brother.

behind the

The Seton community comprises mostly students and teachers, but behind the scenes it takes incredible effort to make Seton as great as it is today. There are people keeping our campus is safe and sound; there are people who ensure the quality of food we get is top-notch; there are people who devote a lot of time to maintain the cleanliness of our school. Here are some of the hard-working people who help make Seton happen every day.

There VV'ren You 1\leed It!. Seton counselors Mrs. Kochis, Mr. Mullin, Mrs Hillebrand, and Mrs Hollerbach. Besides handlmg schedules and grades, they are also trained in dealing with students who experience anx1ety, depression, and other mental issues.

Mrs. Dodaro

You might know her for her charisma during announcements!

Mrs. Dodaro has been working at Seton for about 18 years. Her favorite part of the job is getting to know the students and hearing their stories. Her most embarassing moment?

Mispronouncing names over the intercom on occasions. She enjoys taking pictures of scenery as a hobby and recently, her new grandson Nathan!

Mrs. Ryan

Mrs. Ryan has been employed at Seton for 24 years, and has witnessed our growth from 200 to nearly 600 students! She loves having the opportunity to discover more about students on a more personal level through what foods they like and what they don't. Not many people know about her compelling passion for Italian and Chinese cuisinesteamed fish is her personal favorite dish!

Facilities Department

Q :How long have you been working at Seton?

: I've been working at Seton for 2 years now. Prior to this, I worked at Frank Elementary School in Guadalupe for 35 years and Westwood High School for more than 2 years.

Q:If you had an elephant and you couldn't sell it or give it away, what would you do with it?

: I would let the kids ride it. You can't ask for a better horse! I respect nature and rather than killing it, I share it with other people, so they can enjoy it, too. I rode horses in the desert growing up, and I would want other people to experience that.

Q:One fun fact about you?

: Not a lot of people know I'm a Native American. I originated from the Yaqui tribe. We fled to America from Sonora, Mexico to escape persecution. I am very proud of my heritage and I devote a lot of time teaching our future generations about the culture, including our dances and language.

Mr. Short

UTP Center Manager

Q:Why did you choose to work here?

1£ :I actually work for UTP, which is a company that helps international students in the United States. I was an international student myself, and I missed out on many things. I want to ensure our foreign students here have the best experience that they possibly could.

Q:What interesting thing did you learn while working here?

: I would say learning about Arizona and Phoenix in general, a place I've never been to before! I'm from New York originally, and I made a bucket list of things I want to do before I leave because that day could be tomorrow!

Q :What song best describes your work ethic?

:"Working For The Weekend" by the band Loverboy. It's a little bit cliche. It's a pretty popular song and it's about exactly what it sounds like! It applies to me because I do work on a lot of weekends, and I look forward to taking our students on the trips we offer here .

Head of Security

Q :Whylanyards?

: I know it feels like a pain, but it is a safety issue. We know you are authorized to be on campus if you have a lanyard on. In the case of an injury, let's say you fell on your head. It helps us identify you and take action sooner. If there was an intruder, we can identify who's leaving a lot faster.

Q:What is your guilty pleasure food?

:Definitely popcorn, it's my favorite. How often do I eat it? As often as I can. At the movies, I'm the guy with the big bag of popcorn.

Q:One fun fact about you?

: I spent 25 years on the SWAT team! I started by being a sniper and going to many cool sniper schools where they taught you all about the intricate details, such as wind, velocity, angles and all of that. I was then promoted to Supervisor of the Sniper team, then Supervisor of the Entry team, where they break down doors. I was also an Actions and Explosives Breaching Sergeant, and I learned how to blow holes in walls! I ended off as a Robot Sergeant, we basically used robots to negotiate in tough situations.
