With the 2013-2014 school year quickly coming to a close wanted to recap some of the things we accomplished so far this year. Last semester we had our accreditation visit. Seton Catholic Preparatory (SCP) is accredited by both the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) and AdvancEd, formerly known as North Central.

The process of accreditation actually began with an in-depth study last school year. Mr. Sorkin, our Assistant Principal of Academics, ably took on the task of coordinating the multitude of surveys sent to our different constituencies, compiling this data and using it to develop our action plans.

Comprised of representatives from both organizations, the visiting team spent three days on campus interviewing the different constituencies of the SCP community, verifying our study results and validating our action plans.

Our successful accreditation results serve to affirm our path for the future.

Other campus news, last year, Seton had the opportunity to evaluate the ways Seton is perceived to the outside world. Through focus groups consisting of students, parents, teachers, alumni and members of the Chandler community, two areas were determined to be in need of attention. The first was our website. It was clear the website had become too cumbersome to navigate, so this past fall we undertook the challenge to simplify and update it. Be sure to check out the redesigned www. SetonCatholic.org.

The second area of focus was SCP’s logo portfolio. Through feedback from focus groups and working with professional graphic designers, SCP has a refreshed set of the logos that reflects our commitment to the Catholic faith and speaks to our Sentinel Pride.

Sentinel Pride is front and center as we begin preparation for the 60th Anniversary of Seton Catholic Preparatory next fall. Seton Catholic was founded by Fr. Joseph Patterson in 1954 to make a high school education available for both the migrant workers and Catholic teens of the East Valley.

Fr. Patterson brought the American Sisters of Charity up from Salpointe High School in Tucson to carry out his vision. Under the very capable leadership of Sister Mary Ronald, Seton Catholic High School was established. SCP opened at its current location in 1982, after surviving a fire at our downtown Chandler campus in 1980. Today we continue our mission to provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others as we build for the future.

If you find yourself in the area, stop by for a visit. I would love to show off our beautiful chapel, the creative and technologically innovative things going on in our new fine arts classrooms and our latest project—the new concession stand/restroom facility we added this year.

Habemus Papum, we have a Pope! On March 13, 2013, the bells rang in St. Peter’s Square in jubilation at the announcement of our newly named Pope. Pope Francis has stressed for all of us the importance of performing loving service in the spirit of Christ – something the Seton community has exemplified for decades. This year has been one of growth and positive change at Seton Catholic Preparatory.

The Board of Trustees held its first retreat, and its new members bring additional talent and dedication to Seton’s mission as well as a relentless passion for Seton’s future.

At our last All Boards meeting, Assistant Principal David Sorkin shared the results of the recent 2013 Western Catholic Education Association Accreditation Report. The results were positive and highlighted Seton’s commitment to academic excellence and Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s charisms of love, faith, courage and determination.

The report recognized the administration’s vision and work to ensure that Seton continues to grow into the future in a positive

and innovative way.

Finally, the report acknowledged our success in implementing a strategic plan that includes all boards and volunteers who dedicate their time and talents. Special thanks to the administration and staff for demonstrating great skill and professionalism in navigating our many constituencies.

From an organizational perspective, traditions have been developed which include All Boards meetings twice per year, Board of Trustee member retreats, and, the development of a strategic plan for each board. The board strategic plans have further evolved into a school-wide strategic plan mirroring many of the findings in the accreditation report.

Enhancements to Seton Catholic Prep’s identity system and the roll out of a state of the art website are additional examples of the many positive developments stemming from the mutual collaboration of all of our groups.

wiTh Tommy Lasorda

Tommy Lasorda of Major League Baseball fame graced the Seton Catholic Prep community with his presence on the evening of March 8th. The Sentinel Booster Club hosted this special event, “Take Me Out to the Ballpark with Tommy Lasorda,” complete with a presentation from Mr. Lasorda in the Fine Arts theater, an autograph signing, photo opportunities and ballpark fare on the patio. With humor, colorful stories and inspiration, Mr. Lasorda spoke of his Catholic faith, his marriage of 64 years, his passion for the game—and winning—as a time-honored manager for the L.A. Dodgers.

Thank you to Seton parents Logan and Deena White for bringing Mr. Lasorda to campus for a night baseball fans will always remember. Mr. White is Vice President of Amateur Scouting for the L.A. Dodgers.

ike has the swoosh. Target has the bullseye. Ever notice the arrow in the ubiquitous FedEx logo? These brands simply want you to just do it, expect more and pay less, and be confident your package will arrive anywhere in the world on time. They conjure a motivational lifestyle, a unique shopping experience and a global service we can’t live without.

When we set out to zoom in on what truly makes Seton unique, internal focus groups and market research told us we needed to share the core attributes of our outstanding school in a deliberate and meaningful way with a new generation of students and their families who have many choices in selecting a high school. In short, while people on the “inside” know how great Seton is, people on the “outside” don’t. As one student so eloquently put it, “People do not know the greatness that is Seton.”

One of the ways we are conveying the greatness of Seton is by promulgating strong and memorable imagery that

captures the brand essence of the school. When used in an uncluttered and consistent, the set of complementary logos serves to amplify our school and make it easily identifiable— especially for those who may not know Seton.

“Frequent and consistent usage of our school’s strong brand images will help us build recognition of, and appreciation for, all we stand for,” said Principal Patricia Collins.

The set of logos, or brand identity system, was unveiled in February and is accompanied by a Style Guide available at SetonCatholic.org/news/brand-guidelines. The Style Guide is for use across Seton—from uniform and print vendors, to Athletics and the Spirit Store, to student and parent clubs— and presents the proper usage guidelines to keep our brand strong—and unforgettable—for years to come.

The Main Logo of Seton Catholic Preparatory is the most prominent public face of the school; it is the leading emblem of our brand identity system. This artful logo proudly proclaims that it is yours alone. It invokes a sense of Catholicity, community and heritage.

The stacked version of the Main Logo carries the same brand prominence and symbolism as the horizontal version, but has been slightly modified for apparel usage and other applications where design calls for a stacked logo option.

A source of pride, history and crowning achievement in sports at Seton Catholic Prep, the 2014 Sentinel Mascot is an integral part of the brand identity system. The logo is in keeping with the school’s notoriety on the field and court, and all places where Seton Athletics teams compete. It is a striking Sentinel that is yours alone, upholding the Seton Catholic Prep tradition.

n Monday, February 10th, the new Seton website debuted to the world at the same address, SetonCatholic. org. Visitors to the new SetonCatholic.org can learn about Seton Catholic Prep’s unique offering as the only Catholic high school in the East Valley. The site showcases Seton’s college preparatory curriculum, championship-quality athletics and wide-ranging fine arts programs, to the many extracurricular activities available for students to explore special interests and develop their talents.

The homepage of the new site welcomes visitors with a visual display of photography and bold colors set against a clean, uncluttered backdrop. Content is easily organized into seven main sections featuring separate microsites for Athletics and Fine Arts. This, in addition to utility navigation links located above the main navigation bar, allow for past, present and prospective families to access the information they need.

“Our new website signals an exciting time in the history of Seton Catholic Preparatory,” said Principal Patricia Collins. “As we approach our 60th year serving students of all socioeconomic, ethnic and faith backgrounds, we are committed to sharing the core qualities that distinguish our Catholic faith-based school with a new generation of students and their families.”

The new SetonCatholic. org is part of the school’s branding initiative to share the Seton experience in a meaningful and engaging way. The new website features the refreshed brand images that convey the school’s heritage and future promise. These include the main school logo (in the upper left corner of the site), the Sentinel mascot and SCP monogram (both featured on the Athletics homepage).

The new SetonCatholic.org was developed by Creative Arc, a web design and development firm in Minneapolis specializing in website creation for private education and religious clients such as Parish of the Annunciation, Providence Academy and Westminster Seminary California.

Logo CREST

In keeping with the name recognition of Seton Catholic Preparatory as the most prominent part of the brand identity system, the Seton Logo has been designed with students and spirit wear in mind. It is a contemporary collegiate-style representation of the school.

For specific use, the monogram or initials-only version of the logo has been developed to complement the Seton Logo. The SCP Monogram is to be used only when the full school name is not necessary, such as for internal audiences/events or places such as the school gym, or when there is high familiarity with the Seton Catholic Preparatory identity, e.g., sports games.

The Seton Catholic Preparatory crest holds symbolic meaning for the school, its heritage and patroness, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American saint and a pioneer in parochial education. The 2014 School Crest coordinates with the main logo; SETON CATHOLIC PREPARATORY is in the same font style.

Amanda Kahler,

my dad, Joe Kahler, had been a picture of health for so many years and that is why his cancer diagnosis was such a shock to all of us. My dad has taught us all to rise above, trust in our faith and never be bitter.” says Seton graduate Amanda Kahler ’04. Kahler and her sisters have all graduated from Seton Catholic Prep with Kahler graduating in 2004, her sister Candace (Kahler) Campbell in 2002 and youngest sister, Shelli, in 2012. Kahler received her bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Northern Arizona University and continued on to complete her Master’s degree in Communications. Kahler began her writing career early, which evolved into a speaking tour. Her first book, “Out on my Own...College Bound” was published in 2009 and she began speaking at Arizona high schools and colleges to help students transition from high school to their first year of college.

In 2011, her dad was diagnosed with Stage IV appendix cancer and life changed for the entire family. The family has honored their dad’s wishes to maintain their strong faith and belief in God’s plan. Kahler credits her father and her mom Sherrie, for keeping the family positive and drawing on one another’s strengths. Along with being supported by each other, Kahler shares that her

entire family has relied on the Seton Catholic Prep community for support, strength and prayers. Kahler said, “Whenever we needed anything, someone from Seton was right there.”

Recently, Kahler was surprised by CBS Channel 5 award of a “Pay it Forward” gift of $500. With this money, Kahler, her dad, mom, sisters and 300 others celebrated a Daddy-Daughter Dance which raised over $15,000 for cancer

After the event, Kahler, with help from her family, finished her most recent book, “Pulling the Cancer Card: Playing the Hand You’re Given”. She’s excited to begin speaking to organizations and helping others who are experiencing a difficult diagnosis.

Kahler and her sisters, Candace and Shelli, reflect on their time at Seton Catholic Prep…the teachers who challenged them, instilled faith, courage and determination in them, and who loved them as individuals.

All three fondly remember Dr. Betty Krings and her patience with teaching high level mathematics. The girls remember softball coach and counseling director, Jerry Mullin, for his calm and inclusive patience with girls new to the softball field. All three sisters also said “Mrs. Pattock is a true gem at Seton Catholic Prep!” They remember the teachings from Seton and how that experience strengthened their faith and helped prepare them for life’s challenges.

Claire Evans of Gilbert completed over 200 hours of community service through Hugh O’Brian Youth’s (HOBY’s) Leadership for Service Program.

HOBY is recognized worldwide as one of the nation’s foremost youth leadership development organizations. For her service, Evans, a senior at Seton Catholic Preparatory, has earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Evans completed her community service hours through a combination of volunteering at local organizations, attending HOBY Community Leadership Workshops and participating in clubs at Seton Catholic Prep.

As a volunteer, she has touched local organizations such as St. Mary’s Food Bank, Desert Rivers Audubon, Temple Emanuel Preschool and the Holy Cross Catholic Church youth choir in Mesa. At Seton, Evans is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Mentors Club, Sentinel Ambassadors, Spanish National Honor Society, Art Club and Red Kettle Club.

“Claire has not only been recognized for her tireless service at the highest level from our nation’s president, she is an exceptional role model in bringing our mission to life here at Seton of leadership and loving service to others,” said Patricia Collins, principal of Seton Catholic Preparatory.

Along with HOBY and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the Corporation for National & Community Service and the Points of Light Institute are proud to recognize and certify Evans for her hours of service.

“Claire has shared in the spirit of kindness and warmth of community through an immeasurable contribution of time and effort,” said Javier La Fianza, HOBY’s president and CEO, in a letter for Evans’ college admission officer. Evans plans to attend the University of Arizona in the fall 2014.

The goal of the Christian Service Program at Seton Catholic Prep is for students to recognize and demonstrate that serving others is central to our call as Catholic Christians. This Gospel-rooted service is essential to every student’s experience at Seton Catholic Prep and allows them to provide loving service to others while developing their own spirituality.

Rob Curtis, Seton Catholic Prep’s Campus Minister, shares, “We teach our students they are called to serve as we have recently been reminded by Pope Francis. We challenge our students to get outside of themselves and see the world through others’ eyes. Our students embrace this philosophy and with their loving volunteer service truly make a difference in others’ lives as well as their own.”

My current Christian service project is with Etipser, LLC, a local organization dedicated to serving the special needs community with dignity and respect; offering summer programs and sessions. I assist mentally disabled kids by helping them with their motor, reading, and social skills. I chose this service because I love seeing the joy and innocence of kids with mental disabilities. The experience has made me realize I also want to work with mentally disabled kids when I’m older. Through this project, I am challenged to step out of my comfort zone and connect with a new group of people. This Seton Catholic service project has helped me see the “gift is in the giving” of my time and talent to these wonderful children.

I always try to work as hard as possible in all I do whether it is school work, sports, or volunteering. I always want to be the best person I can be and am determined to work hard in all I do.

For my service project, I chose to volunteer at St. Anne’s Catholic Church by assisting anyone who needed to prepare for an event in their department. I usually helped with preparing the Church for weekday Mass. During weekends, would also help the staff of the Catechism school prepare for classes. My personal goal was to complete a service project knowing that I made a significant difference in my own parish community. I selected this particular project because it fulfilled my personal goal. Because I was working in the same parish where I attend Mass, I was familiar with most of the people I worked with, however, by working with them towards the same objective, we automatically developed a connection. Working with the staff gave me the time to get to know them better and to develop a stronger connection to my faith.

I always like to show love towards someone by giving them a compliment or being positive around them. I do this because I feel that joy is contagious. I believe that if you show compassion towards someone, then they will feel an inclination to show compassion towards another. My Christian service project has truly been a way for me to share this charism of love and service within my parish community.

Seton Catholic Senior, James Ariola, was presented with a scholarship award for his winning essay in the VFW Post 8053 in Sun Lakes Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program. James audio essay on “Why I’m Optimistic about our Nation’s Future” was judged on originality, content and delivery. James will now go on to compete in the state competition.

Teacher of T he y ear

Tina Larsen, a third grade teacher at St. John Bosco Catholic School and the mother of Seton Catholic Prep students Daniel (’14), Patrick (’15) and Thomas (7th grade SJB) was awarded the Private School Teacher of the Year for the State of Arizona by the Arizona Council for American Private Education (AZCAPE). More than 200 private school leaders were nominated for this prestigious award.

officiaLLy speaking Exceptional Character

Don Cerimeli is an official with the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) for more than 23 years. During this time, he has worked state football and basketball state championship games. Below is an excerpt from his posting on AIA365.com during football season:

Our crew would love to work a football game where we threw no flags. It would be a blast to just spot the ball and let two good football teams play within the rules. As officials we talk about this utopia all the time. On Thursday, we got close, only throwing a total of four flags in our varsity game all night long. Then our crew worked the Snowflake at Seton Catholic game on Friday. We expected a great football game between two great teams and it was. However, after calling 22 fouls, as a crew you walk off the field with an empty feeling. As the game’s final seconds counted down, with Snowflake taking a knee to secure the win, I braced myself for a few cold stares and maybe a negative word or two thrown our way about how the officials cost Seton the game.

Larsen was selected for her exemplified criteria as having passion for education and serving her local community. She began her teaching career in San Diego, CA and shortly thereafter chose to take a hiatus to raise her family. Larsen returned to teaching at St. John Bosco Catholic School seven years ago.

Asked what motivates her to be an exceptional teacher, friend, mom, and wife, her answer was clear, “My faith, my family, my friends and those smiling little faces each morning as we begin the school day, so eager to learn!”

But, to my surprise, it didn’t happen at Seton. Seton’s players, led by Quarterback Kyle Johnson, went out of their way to shake my hand and to tell me “good game.” The Seton Catholic coaches and administration all thanked us and appreciated our efforts even though they came up short on the scoreboard. I honestly was surprised by this tremendous display of sportsmanship and respect for the game.

Upon returning to the locker room, our crew discussed each foul we called and some we didn’t. We reviewed a few rules and mechanics that will help us as a crew get better in the coming weeks. I asked each member of the crew to watch the game film over the weekend and grade each call and be honest with each other. After all the review I am sure we as a crew got most of what we called last Friday night right. The same can be said about Seton Catholic Prep as it relates to the character of their kids….Seton got it right!

It has been 80 years since the first Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill brought their educational, parish and outreach ministries from Greensburg, Pennsylvania to Arizona. They continue their active engagement today in Tucson and Phoenix.

The sisters’ commitment to the Church of the Southwest has been multifaceted. It expressed itself in education (kindergarten through high school), catechetic, work with Native American and Hispanic communities, at the diocesan level, in pastoral ministry, outreach, music and liturgy, hospital chaplaincy, art, Hispanic deacon formation, care for the earth, counseling and social work. They have consistently shared the Gospel impelled by the love of Christ.

Their work in Arizona led them to serve in many parishes and schools as well as hospital facilities. They have also served at the Phoenix Diocesan level and lent support to many church-based programs. While celebrating their 80 year traditions, they continue to serve the Church of Arizona because, in the words of their motto, “The charity of Christ urges us.” Seton Catholic Prep is blessed to have the continued support of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill.

Kristen (McLaughlin) McKnight ’05 and her husband, Dr. Alex McKnight were fortunate to start their marriage off in a very special way by receiving the newlywed blessing (Sposi Novelli) from Pope Francis in May of 2013.

Gillean Osterday Barkyoumb, ’06 was recently named Employee of the Month by Isagenix International where she works on their Research and Development Team. Congratulations!

Valerie Echeveste, ’07 is currently working with Congressman Ed Pastor on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Valerie and Stephanie both attended World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this past summer.

Caolan Ronan ‘07 is currently attending Elon University Law School in Greensboro, North Carolina. While pitching for Division I Baseball at LaSalle University, he had the lowest ERA his last year and graduated in 2012 with a degree in Criminal Justice and English. Meagan and Pat Sullivan, both Class of 2007, welcomed their first child, Declan Francis Sullivan, on October 10, 2013.

Congratulations to Amanda Russell ‘07, and Joseph Roberson ‘07, who were married on November 8, 2013, in Corolla NC. They both graduated from Arizona State University and now reside in Queen Creek. Amanda is the founder of Klury, an on-line upscale designer store and Joseph is in management with QuikTrip Corporation.

2010s

Joe Cusimano ‘10 - a medicinal biochemistry major with a 4.0 GPA at Arizona State University and a member of Barrett Honors College. Currently applying to pharmacy school in fulfillment of his plans to pursue a PharmD and a PhD in drug research.

Michael Polowski ‘10 was awarded a 2013 Provost Fellowship at Loyola University in Chicago. He is researching “Mapping the Humanities: Intersection between History and Digital Media.”

Amanda Veals ‘10 attending University of Arizona studying environmental science and wildlife conservation. Amanda just returned from study abroad in South Africa.

McKenna Ronan ’11 is currently a junior at Mercy College in New York, majoring in Media Studies with emphasis on journalism. She also has completed her third season as starting setter for their women’s volleyball team, setting a record for service aces and assists.

Briana Bricher ‘11 is studying at University of Dallas for a BS in Biology. She graduated in 2010 from CGCC with a degree in Associates of Science and she played 2 years of basketball with the Coyotes.

Caroline Pennison ’11 was selected by Louisiana State University’s Panhellenic Executive Council to serve as a Gamma Chi for 2013 Fall Sorority Rush. She led a group of 17 girls through Rush and was then reunited with her chapter, Zeta Tau Alpha.

Chris Cusimano ’11 is serving as a Specialist in the Arizona Army National Guard and has recently been awarded the 153rd Brigade Support Battalion Soldier of the Year for 2013. Chris is a Dean’s List junior at ASU studying Criminal Justice and also serves as a Chandler Police Explorer.

Megan Molloy ‘12 and Eric Pfafffenberger ‘12, were just recently engaged. Megan attends ASU studying Tourism and Special Events and Eric is studying Fire Science at MCC. Congratulations!

Jen Cox ‘12 attending the University of Arizona majoring in sports medicine and planning to become a physical therapist.

Courtney Rodriguez, ’12 received the Bear Down Scholarship award after exceptional academic excellence during her freshman year at the University of Arizona. Congratulations!

Andrew Polowski ‘13 was a member of the Northern Arizona University Lumberjack Marching Band this fall. The band performed shows for all home football games, performed for alumni at Homecoming and hosted NAU Band Day. He is now a member of the pep band and plays at home basketball games. Go Jacks!

Alyssa Garcia, ’13 representing the Ak-Chin Indian Community, was crowned Miss Indian Arizona 2013-14. She is attending the University of Arizona seeking her degree in Physiology.

Megan Farinella, ’13 was awarded the ariZoni Theater Best Actress Award for her role as Aida in “Disney’s Aida” with the Actors Youth Theater.

This production also won the ariZoni Award for Best Musical Production.

Vicky Taverna, ‘13 received a scholarship for cross country at MCC. She competed in the fall during her freshman year running her best time at a 20:12 for the 5k and ran at NJCAA Nationals in Iowa. She is currently competing indoor track and will attend the Indoor

in NYC.

The Alice C. Hintze Scholarship was created at the Catholic Community Foundation by Carl and Alice Hintze as a perpetual endowment, to provide a scholarship to be awarded annually to an 8th grade student from St. Mary Basha Catholic School who will attend Seton Catholic Prep. Each year a new award winner will be selected based on academic achievement, an essay and financial need by a scholarship committee at St. Mary’s. Members of Carl and Alice’s family presented the award in their parent’s memory at the St. Mary’s graduation ceremony

last spring. The legacy they created calls witness to the value of Catholic education and their love of the Catholic faith.

The Hintze’s lived in several cities in Arizona throughout their lives. They moved to Chandler in 2004 and became parishioners of St. Mary’s. They cherished the Catholic education they received and that their children received. Four of their children attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and five attended Gerard Catholic High School prior to its closing. Some of their grandchildren have attended St.

Mary-Basha Catholic School and Seton Catholic Prep. Married for 69 years, Carl passed away in October 2011 and Alice passed in December 2012. They were survived by 8 children (Carl Hintze Jr., Andrea Seminara, Cindy Cooper, Janice Western, Barry Hintze, Craig Hintze, Therese Gateley and Cristin Allen), 31 grandchildren and 36 greatgrandchildren. We wish to acknowledge and thank Alice and Carl for their commitment and loyal support of Catholic education and Seton Catholic Prep!
