Apoprotein A1 and B comparative relations with LDL-, HDL- and total cholesterol

Abstract It is well known that lipids play an important role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Apoprotein A1 is the primary apopotein of HDL and apoprotein B is the primary apoprotein of chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, and LDL. It is well established that higher apoprotein B (as LDL-cholesterol) levels and lower apoprotein A1 (as HDL-cholesterol) levels are associated with coronary heart disease. Some studies have shown that apoprotein A1 and apoprotein B and the apoprotein B/apoprotein A1 ratio is more effective in predicting the risk for heart attack than LDL-cholesterol, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol or cholesterol/HDLcholesterol ratio. The aim of this study was to compare the relationships between apoproteins A1 and B to total-cholesterol, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol. Statistical analysis was performed using MS Excel 2007 program. A strong correlation was found between apoprotein B and LDL–cholesterol and between apoprotein B/apoprotein A1 and cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios; medium correlation was found between apoprotein A1 and HDL-cholesterol. This study was conducted within the framework of the applied research study „The impact of coffee consumption and vegetarian diet on the results of blood tests and bone mineral density” performed at Tartu Health Care College.
