Coffee consumption and its association with age, chronic diseases and physical activity

Abstract The level of chronic diseases in general population has been increasing due to unhealthy eating habits, decreased physical activity levels, and increased tobacco use. The prevalence of lifestyle dependent conditions and diseases, e.g. obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stroke and some cancer types, has been increasing. These diseases are remarkably important causes of disability and premature deaths. The aim of this study was to assess the coffee consumption and its association with age, chronic diseases and physical activity. The study was carried out during the period from November 2012 to May 2013 in 6 colleges and universities in Estonia. Altogether 512 students and their parents were involved in the study. The participants younger than 30 years of age were identified as students, the participants older than 30 years of age were identified as parents. All participants were divided into three groups: no coffee consumers, average coffee consumers: 1-4 cups per day and excessive coffee consumers: ≥5 cups per day. One cup contained ca 200 ml coffee, and ca 100 mg caffeine. Based on current physical activity the subjects were divided into three groups: inactive – physical activity <150 minutes a week; and very active – physical activity >300 minutes a week. The middle group was defined as optimal physical activity group – 150–300 minutes a week. The study showed that the amounts of consumed coffee do not depend on the presence of chronic diseases.
