Developing Affection

Journeying through time together, growing affection, and deepening bonds... In this way, these 3 stories show how owners continue to develop relationships with their one-of-a-kind "partners". What are the various ways that affection comes from the time working on their partners?

In daily life we encounter many "things". But there probably aren't many things that fill us with a special feeling and that we want to have by our side.

And so, when we find something that excites us, we want to cherishingly and carefully grow a bond. With the flow of time, we try to enjoy the changing shape of the form of affection.

Tsuchiya Kaban Staff - Masaaki Ohno | 1 year of affection

My favorite sweater casually brightens my mood every day. Going to see it with my wife who had been wanting me to get it for a while, I fell in love with it the moment I tried it on. Because there's no worrying about how I look, I can feel natural. Wearing it I can relax comfortably and feel satisfied anytime.

This is a joy that can't be found any other way and I want to keep it for as long as possible, so I never forget to brush it each time I put it on. When I start brushing it from the top bit by bit, just seeing it look better puts me in a good mood. It goes well with my wife's things in different designs that she loves, and every time I take care of it my attachment to it deepens. I hope I can keep wearing it for a very long time.

Antique Shop ATLAS owner - Genta Imura | 12 years of affection

I found this 100-year-old cutlery at a flea market in France, and 12 years have passed since it came to my home. The owner of a second-hand shop taught me to wipe it twice with a dry cloth whenever it gets discolored. It's a bit of a nuisance, but if I don't do it the second time the shine isn't quite the same. I'm happy that the amount of effort I put into it is given back to me.

It has some scratches, but most were made by the previous owners. "I wonder if you were used at a feast celebrating when Paris was liberated." I enjoy talking to the cutlery like that while I'm polishing it. The scratches are proof that it was loved while being used by its previous owners. When I think about that I love it even more.

My love and gratitude for leather shoes deepen every time I take care of them.

Tsuchiya Kaban Staff - Jun Shimatani | Half a year to 6 years of affection

For me, leather shoes aren't just things to wear, they're like a part of my body. My morning routine is to confirm my condition for that day using the "feet familiarity" of my shoes. In that way, these shoes are important to me like a partner so I always take care of them very conscientiously and with a sense of gratitude.

They have smooth and solid molding that can be felt when applying cream. The leather has a look that's full of life and a beautiful shine. This time I spend intently absorbed in taking care of leather shoes reminds me of the times I spent with each pair and my attachment to them deepens even more. When the maintenance is finished, I put my feet in and nothing is more comfortable than that feeling of unity the shoes give me.

If we smile, we become happy. If we're hurt, we become sad. Because its existence is important, we focus on it, work on it, and want to bring out its rich look. In that way, while building a comfortable relationship, we can hope to always walk together.

Brown | 1 year of affection

I chose this because I wanted to buy something to remember my first paycheck after graduating. Since it's my workbag, I use it every day, so it's picked up a few scratches and kinks and whatnot. The time I've spent with it showing in the leather, and it's interesting how the look of the bag has changed at times. I like that. The bag feels more like a partner than a thing and I'm extremely happy to have had the experience of owning it.

I like that I can use this in both my professional and private life, and while it might look simple at first glance, it has a really unusual shape if you look closely. It'd be nice if the "Olive Brown" color transformed to a shade that has a deepness like a military uniform.
