ockbridge County has many opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Helping promote this path is Live Healthy Rockbridge, a coalition of local organizations, government agencies and private citizens.

“We take a pretty broad look at health, recognizing that it’s more than just the absence of disease and injury,” said Holly Ostby, community health coordinator of Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital and chairman of Live Healthy Rockbridge. “We have a lot of community partners who are not necessarily thought of as being part of the healthcare world, such as law enforcement, the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce and our local schools.”

Ostby said Live Healthy Rockbridge conducts community health assessments every three years, and develops a community-wide strategic plan to address the most pressing needs in the community.

Accomplishments include: • A former free clinic in Lexington transitioned into a federally qualified health center, enabling it to greatly expand services.

• An assessment determined the need for urgent care, leading to the construction of two urgent care centers by Carilion Clinic.

“We have advantages that some other small rural communities don’t have, because the hospital here is associated with Carilion Clinic, which is one of the larger health systems, so we are able to bring in specialty services that you would not normally get in a small community,” Ostby said. “The hospital is a critical access hospital, which means that even though we are a relatively

Ostby described Rockbridge County as having many opportunities to enhance one’s personal health and wellbeing. “The county is a healthy community and a fantastic place to live,” she said. “Lexington has been designated as a HEAL city (Healthy Eating, Active Living) and Rockbridge has shared its healthy living strategy with other communities. There is a great variety of outdoor recreation, and an overall healthy lifestyle.” w

QUICK FACTS Our Name Rockbridge County was established in October 1777 from parts of now neighboring Augusta and Botetourt counties, and the first county elections were held in May 1778. Rockbridge County was named for Natural Bridge, a notable landmark in the southern portion of the county.

ecent trends in public relations and technology have demonstrated to all age groups the benefits of living in a small community. Still, some young professionals eager to advance their career may misperceive the charm and benefits. Often we hear that millennials and now Gen Z attend college and migrate to metropolitan areas to start their careers.

It’s exciting and a chance for them to be on their own.

While the Rockbridge Area has that experience, we have had a turn of events in recent years. Some of our home grown residents in their twenties and thirties have have chosen to stay in Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County, rather than trend away. Others, feeling the tug of the charm, have decided to return to the area after living in larger cities. These young people are raising their young families here, joining family businesses or striking out on their own as entrepreneurs.

Why stay or return to our community one might ask? Quality of life is certainly 14

one answer. Small towns are a safe place to raise a family, our educational systems are top-notch and access to the outdoors is as easy as walking out your back door.

A stroll through downtown Lexington or Buena Vista will find families dining out, shopping in stores, or getting exercise pushing a stroller.

T

oday’s curriculum looks very different from what a traditional education may have looked like 20 years ago.

“Because many of our students will someday be employed in careers that have yet to be invented, we connect students to real-world problems with an overarching emphasis on communication, collaboration, creative thinking, critical thinking and civic-mindedness,” said Superintendent of Rockbridge County Schools Phillip Thompson. “When these skills are taught in tandem with maintaining high expectations and delivering content-rich curricula in a rigorous academic and Career & Technical Education (CTE) program, students will be better prepared for life in the 21st century world beyond high school graduation.”

To this end, Rockbridge County Public Schools continues a transformation of CTE offerings at both the middle school (four programs) and high school level (18 programs) to 21st-century programs.

The school district’s goal is for interested students to begin their CTE educational experience at the middle school so they may earn industry certifications earlier during their high school career.

These early certifications will, in turn, lead to internship and work-based learning opportunities prior to high school graduation, creating a more prepared workforce for business and industry.

Rigorous academic expectations are a 16

standard of Rockbridge County Schools. In spring 2019, 89.8% of the 118 students who took an AP exam scored a three or higher.

Comparing this level of success to the Virginia average of 64.3% meeting this same standard, the district takes pride in always putting learning first for its students.

meeting place,’ ” Jenny said. “People come in to visit, to see what we’re up to. Customers know each other. They can stay for a half hour and talk, which I love.”

The couple enjoys the feeling of community they created within their store. “We want it to be a comfortable, non-pressure, fun place,” Jenny said. “Mark and I love meeting people.”

RETIREMENT

T

he Lexington area is a sought-after retirement destination due to its historic charm, breathtaking scenery and change of seasons, as well as affordable home prices and a low crime rate.

Mark and Jenny Nelson felt a kinship on their first visit to the area 30 years ago, and decided early on they would make their retirement home here.

The Nelsons, owners of Yesterday Once More in downtown Lexington, were living in Maryland when they visited the area for a horse show. At the time, they traveled the country showing horses with their daughters.

The first time they showed at the Virginia Horse Center, the couple knew they’d found their new home.

“We fell in love with Lexington and we knew this was where we were going to retire,” Jenny Nelson said. During the break at the horse show, the family ventured downtown to explore the community and were impressed with the peaceful atmosphere and cleanliness.

“The people were so friendly,” Jenny said, and the spectacular scenery wowed them as well.

A John Muir quote summed up their feelings, Jenny said: “The mountains are calling and I must go.”

In Maryland, Jenny worked a corporate job. Mark, after serving as a Prince Georges County police officer, retired from the force and moved to a corporate position while also building custom homes.

When it came time to retire, the Nelsons looked at other areas of the country, “but Lexington kept calling us back,” Jenny said.

“We are from the water, on Chesapeake Bay, and we moved to the mountains,” she added with a laugh.

The Nelsons had settled on Rockbridge Baths. “We built our house here before we retired,” Jenny said. “We’d come down here on 18

weekends,” enjoying the escape from the city and high-pressure jobs. Though just a fourhour drive from their Maryland home, the Virginia community was a world apart.

In June 2012, the Nelsons retired and moved into their Rockbridge Bath home permanently, taking a few months to decompress. They then soon realized they were ready for a second-act endeavor. They sold wares through antique booths, then decided to open their own store.

In 2014, they opened Yesterday Once More in the heart of downtown Lexington. Yesterday Once More specializes in unique antiques, 1930s and ’40s reinvigorated mahogany furniture and a collection of shabby chic pieces. Their store also features oil paintings, lamps and classic vases and sculptures.

The Nelsons have built a strong customer base, with people driving to their Lexington store from Lynchburg, Tennessee; and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Their store formerly housed a car dealership and is next to the Lexington-Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce. Chamber membership is important, Jenny noted, saying she appreciates how the Chamber supports the business community. “The networking group is fabulous. They let you know what’s going on. They’re positive and they work hard.”

Lexington is a Virginia Main Street community, and the Nelsons are involved in Main Street Lexington, which presents popular community events such as the July 4 Bike Parade, Downtown Trick-or-Treat and the Christmas Parade.

“That’s the key to success: supporting the community and getting support from the community,” Jenny said. w

“We sell old and new,” Jenny said. The Nelsons travel all over to select wares for the store.

“We go down to North Carolina to buy floor models, some in boxes,” she said. “We just mix it up.”

Their store unites a love for fine craftsmanship and passion for preserving the past, and the husband-and-wife team blends their skills seamlessly. Jenny has always had a flair for interior design, and Mark’s carpentry skills, honed through custom home-building, earned the couple a reputation for supreme quality. Their home décor collection blends Mark’s custom designs with Jenny’s eye for details.

The Nelsons are thrilled to be a part of the downtown they admired decades ago. “What’s really unique about the downtown business district is that it’s a community. We all work well together,” Jenny said. “We send people to other businesses, and other businesses send people to us.”

And it’s the people who make the business worthwhile, they say. “We call our store ‘the

L

exington, Buena Vista and Rockbridge County is a year-round arts and culture destination. Not only does the region roll out the red carpet the first Friday of every month to showcase the recent works of our artisans, but it also welcomes an array of musical talent in myriad places.

Lime Kiln’s flagship program is its Summer Concert Series, composed of 10 to 12 events running from May through September.

These shows feature well-known performers specializing in what McElroy described as “roots music,” a mix of bluegrass, newgrass, Americana, folk and country music.

Lime Kiln Theater, a small natural amphitheater near Lexington, may not be the best-known music venue in the country, but its reputation and natural setting has made it a favorite of performers while drawing rave reviews from music lovers.

The theater is becoming well known among roots music performers around the country.

Each concert features a nationallevel act. Many are accustomed to playing larger venues, but they are thrilled to book a gig at Lime Kiln because of the unique experience.

Likened to a miniature version of one of the most unique outdoor venues in the country, Colorado’s Red Rocks, Lime Kiln Theater is considered a hidden gem in Virginia, but its reputation as an entertainment venue has spread beyond the state’s borders. About 25% of its audience comes from out of state.

Lime Kiln’s sellable capacity is just under 700. McElroy noted the concept is quality over quantity and that has proved to be successful. The theater averaged 99 percent of capacity for the 2019 season.

The theater’s name derives from its location: the 12-acre site of a 19thcentury lime kiln and quarry. It is a natural amphitheater nestled in the woods. The main performance area is next to rock structures that had been part of the quarry and the entire venue is surrounded by beautiful trees.

“The vibe is natural and intimate, with tasteful lighting and excellent sound” said Spencer McElroy, the theater’s executive director. “Every seat is good and the acoustics are fabulous.”

“The idea is to do two or three shows per month, but to have them be sellout shows,” McElroy said.

Expansion of the theater is under consideration, McElroy added, but it would have to be done in a way to preserve the natural setting, and the infrastructure would have to support it.

“We are sort of in a sweet spot right now. Given the size of our site, we have flexibility to do larger scale events. We do private events, such as private concerts for local colleges that have 1,500 people attending, with temporary stages set up around the grounds.” ›

hen my husband, Brian, and I were dating years ago, one of our favorite places to escape the hectic city life of Houston, Texas, was here in Lexington. This quiet, historical, small town kept beckoning us back with its natural beauty and wonderful people. So much so, that we started searching for a piece of property that we could eventually retire on here.

After much discussion and planning, we decided to build a beautiful, timber frame barn venue, which could support a variety of events. This would be a way to make a significant, positive impact in our community and a way to share our incredible property with those that visit.

We chose a name for our property, even though we hadn’t found it yet. The name was based on what our vision of the property would be – secluded, with incredible views. Thus, the hunt for The Seclusion began.

WHEN WE DROVE UP THE LONG, WINDING, GRAVEL DRIVE AND REACHED THE TOP, OUR FIRST WORD WAS “WOW”

On one of our vacations to Lexington in 2014, we stumbled across an interesting property listed with a local Realtor. When we drove up the long, winding, gravel drive and reached the top, our first word was “wow.” The views were simply breathtaking and we knew we had found The Seclusion.

In September 2015, we moved from Houston to Lexington. After several seasons of clearing trees and brush, we were finally

I joined the Lexington Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce the first month I purchased the business, and continued to be a member for the entire 22 years.
