Kulpiyam wins NPA Cup final STORY BY ALF WILSON and PICS BY TALEI ELU

Badu side Kulpiyam defeated Malu Kiwai, 22-6, in the grand final of the Dan Ropeyarn Memorial NPA Cup rugby league carnival held at Bamaga last weekend. Nine men teams battled it out over four rounds of qualifying matches played on the first two days of the three day carnival. Sunday’s decider was a promoter’s dream between two sides jam packed with talent. The Roy Baira-coached Kulpiyam included former NRL Dally M Medal winner Ben Barba, Travis Waddell with lots of NRL experience, star Queensland Cup speedster Yamba Bowie, Maipele Morseu and veteran Steve Singleton. Ironically Barba was lined up last week at the Mackay Indigenous carnival for GH United, who beat Kulpiyam in the final. A week previously Barba played for Mulga at the Zenadth Kes Cup on TI and in early October for KASL United at Townsville’s Bindal Sharks carnival. In Sunday’s quarter finals Kulpiyam 28 d Eagles United 6, Injinoo Crocs 18 d West Coast Mariners 0, Malu Kiwai 34 d East Coast Brothers 8 and Napranum Bulldogs 18 d FNQ Balas 14. Semi finals saw Kulpiyam 18 d Napranum Bulldogs 4 and Malu Kiwai 18 d Injinoo Crocs 16 in a cliffhanger. A courageous Injinoo Crocs were going for five titles in a row 2016-2019. Last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19 regulations. Full results and pics P11 and 12 
