Beginning Your Research

Begin at TSC’s Homepage Hover over “Current Students” and scroll down to “Library”
Click on “Library”

By

You can immediately start your search with or without refiners

By entering keywords or the title of an article here, you will be taken to the results page, related to your search

clicking “Digital Library Scholarly Search”

This is the page where you can begin your search by clicking “Digital Library Scholarly Search.” You may enter keywords in the box or begin an advanced search (explained in future slides)

Entering a broad term (keywords) and clicking the Search button may produce many results. Here I am using “world war ii” by itself in a “Basic Search.” The next slide will show the results

Over 5 million results?!

Far too many to sift through. We will need to filter

!!Filter, Narrow, Refine, Limit(er), Expand(er) all mean you are reducing or broadening the amount of results that you receive.

By clicking “Advanced Search” on the previous page (also seen here)

You can begin narrowing your topic to receive results that are better related to your research topic. Here I am including “Yalta” in a separate box with the Boolean word (operator) AND. **For more information on Boolean Operators check out this website: Boolean Operators | Quick Guide, Examples & Tips (scribbr.com)

I am also narrowing results by choosing “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals,” (Left) “Full Text” (Right) and “English” as my language (Dropdown, (Lower Right)

This narrowed my results to about 2000, much better, but still more than I want to look through

In the bracket on the left side of the slide are more ways to narrow a search.

More choices to narrow

Clicking on an article will bring you to the detailed record. Make sure to read the

ABSTRACT to ensure that the article fits with your research topic. On the left you have choices of viewing the article in HTML or PDF format. On the right are tools you can use to save, print, email, cite, etc. the article

HTML is displayed on the same page as the

Detailed Record. Find it by clicking

“HTML Full Text” or by scrolling down the page. HTML does not include page numbers and sometimes places graphics in odd places.

The PDF of an article looks like the print journal pages. It includes the page numbers and all necessary information needed for citing

On the Detailed Record/HTML of an article, you will find a list of icons to the right of the screen. These can also be found on the right side of a PDF version of the article. You may save the article in different ways, print, email it to others or to yourself, etc. A popular icon is the “cite” icon. By clicking on the icon, you will be brought to a page that includes many different citation styles of this article

This is the scroll down list of citation styles for the article. Be aware of the edition that is showing and that these are created electronically with only the information that the computer program has been given. These citations can be copied and pasted into your paper, but if you are unsure of anything to do the with citing, be sure to consult your professor.

If you like to keep URLs to get you back to your articles, make sure to click “permalink” at the right side of the page and copy the link provided. DO NOT save the URL at the top of the page, you will not find the article again if this is saved.
