Students, of all ages are enriched by the enthusiasm of the horses, volunteers and friends. “The smiles on their faces are true evidence of their feelings. It is very contagious and fulfilling,” said Robbie Hamrick. “Our horses are volunteers also, and are a very special bunch. They know the good they provide and sense the reward.” Individuals can volunteer by leading a horse, being a sidewalker or helping around the barn. holders, crayons and folders. Then families walked with their kids to the next table where each child was able to pick out their choice of backpack. Costco donated a number of backpacks to Polk County Schools, which then passed on 150 to Outreach, Reedy said. Reedy then purchased another 350 bags through Buy Way in Columbus, which offered them at a significant discount to Outreach. For the families who made it by early in the day, there was a selection of backpacks with designs of everything from Hannah Montana to Spongebob and even outdoorsy green bags to suit a child’s preference. “I want the kids to pick out their bags because it’s fun for them and they get to be who they are with the bag they carry,” Reedy said.
Reedy said her aim with the supply drive this year was to make the event a fun affair for the entire family. She said she didn’t want it to feel like just another charity event. “I think this year we wanted to provide a good atmosphere for the kids and the parents,” Reedy said. Numerous area health organizations – Baker Chiropractic, Collins Dental Clinic, Edney Eye, Polk Fit Fresh and Friendly, the Polk Wellness Center and St. Luke’s Hospital – were also on hand to provide screenings and health information to families. The Columbus Fire Department even showed up with plastic firefighter hats, which most of the younger kids wore out of the building as they left. At the end of the day, Reedy said Outreach was able to assist more than 200 children in preparing to go back to school. Classes open back up on Aug. 27 in Polk County.

When you can’t wait until the next day, we’re here. When Colleen Stich started feeling bad one evening, she decided she needed to see a doctor. Since her primary care office was closed for the day, she opted to go to The Clinic at Walmart. “I hurt all over,” Colleen says. “I had never had strep before, but the nurse practitioner said she thought it was strep and tested for it, and it was. It’s nice to we have this option. I didn’t feel rushed, but yet I was and out quickly. The staff was very professional.” Colleen’s sister, Cathleen Kress, was so amazed by Colleen’s experience that when she, too, became ill, she went to visit The Clinic at Walmart. “I’m a nurse, and I was completely impressed because the nurse practitioner never took her eyes off of me as she put my information in on the computer and she washed her hands numerous times.” The Clinic at Walmart is open every day, offering day and night hours, for your health and convenience.

Lula C. Staton
Lula C. Staton of Saluda went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012 at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills in Landrum. She was born Oct. 2, 1912 to M.T. (Tom) and Bessie Summey Staton and lived the majority of her nearly 100 years in Saluda. She was of the Baptist faith and spent many hours each week listening to her favorite TV preachers. Before the gradual loss of her sight, she loved to crochet and watch her favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves. In recent years, she was still able to share many hours on the phone talking with family and
friends and was faithful in keeping up with the sick and shut-ins. Lula worked in hosiery mills in Tryon and East Flat Rock and for Autumn Care in Saluda before retiring to care for her parents. Over the years, she said she would rather take care of children than to eat when she was hungry. That was evident by all the special love and care that she gave to her nieces, nephews and several generations of their families. In her early years, she also cared for numerous children of many friends who cherish the time she spent with them. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Monty (M.C.) Staton and two sisters, Emmie Staton Gilbert and Isabel Staton Holbert. Lula is survived by her nephews James Gilbert and wife
Linda, and nephew Tom Gilbert; nieces, Sandra Gilbert McCall, Brenda Gilbert Durham, Belva Holbert Morrow, Anita Holbert Newman, Suzanne Staton Bane and Becky Staton Rhodes and sister-in-law, Louise Staton. Also surviving are numerous great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews who all referred to her lovingly as “Boober.” She will be missed greatly by her faithful friend and companion, her cat Frisky. Special thanks go to two very special care givers, Michele Phillips and Jackie Huffman for the many hours of special care and love given to Lula, Hospice nurse Jane Foster, the staff at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Dr. Kim Bridges, Libby Carter with the CAP program of Polk County, the staff of Amazing
Grace, extended family, friends, neighbors and Rev. Henry Vegter and wife, Wilma, who all showed a special love and support for Lula. The family will receive friends from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home chapel conducted by Rev. Henry Vegter. Burial will follow in Saluda Cemetery in Saluda. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, 260 Fairwinds Road, Landrum, SC 29356 or to Friendship Baptist Church, P.O. Box 505, Saluda, NC 28773. The family is at the home, 156 Frost Road, Saluda. Condolences may be left at www.pettyfuneralhome.com.
Christ Community Church celebrates Polk Baha’i first anniversary of Cowboy Church Aug. 10 quotations Christ Community Church celebrates the one-year anniversary of the Cowboy Church Friday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. Over the past year or two, the Cowboy Church has grown to be the third largest Cowboy Church in the upstate. The event will feature a visit from the North Spartan Baptist Association’s Party Wagon. It offers a bouncy-house and various
ball game equipment, including a corn-toss game, as well as all the cotton candy, snowcones and popcorn the kids can eat. The Party Wagon recently sponsored a block party on a mission to Portsmouth, Ohio to encourage and uplift area youth. In addition to the Party Wagon, the Cowboy Church will open its new game room filled with billiards, foosball, air hock-
ey and ping pong. A concert will also be offered, featuring Catlin Tierce, Southern Faith, Greg Lambert and Tracy Henderson. Christ Community Church is located at the old Brannon’s restaurant, Hwy. 14 on the state line. For more information, call 828-289-2224. – article submitted by Beverly Bryson

More than 50 take part in Landrum Cheer Camp
Future Cardinals cheerleaders donned their red and black as they filled the Landrum High School gymnasium last week for the Landrum Cheer Camp. More than 50 campers took part in the multiple-day event where they learned cheers and chants for their favorite team. “I tell everyone to get their mammograms — you can tell one person and that might be the nudge to get them there, and may be what saves their life.” - San Toye Yelton, a patient at The Mammography Place
Your well-being is the focus of our care. San Toye Yelton of Rutherfordton has always gotten mammograms, but the importance of the screening didn’t hit home until her mother had a routine mammogram that showed she had breast cancer. “My mom was 79 and had never had a mammogram,” San Toye says. “I was coming for mine and convinced her to come have one too. They called her the next day with the results and she had her mastectomy immediately. The doctor said she had probably had breast cancer for at least six years.” Now, getting the routine screening has become even more important for San Toye. She says she’s much more conscious of the importance of prevention. “When it touches you that closely, you really are much more aware.” The Mammography Place and its technologists are fully accredited and certified by the American College of Radiology to provide the highest quality screening mammography services to the women of Rutherford County and the surrounding area.

August may mean lazy days of summer for many but for the Green Creek Hounds it is filled with fun and anticipation. Young hounds are being introduced to the sport of foxhunting, and new members are learning to ride behind the pack. All begin to recognize the huntsman’s calls both of voice and horn. Horses new to hunting settle in and prepare for the winter season. One of the highlights of summer comes at the end of August, when Green Creek Hounds celebrates the coming of fall with Hunt Week. This year it will be Aug. 23-25. Hunting will take place on Aug. 23 and 25 at 7 a.m., followed by a breakfast both days. On Friday evening, Aug. 24, Green River Plantation will host a “Day In the Country” party, which includes square dancing lessons. For more information about this event or membership in the Green Creek Hounds, contact Deborah Bundy at dkbfox@gmail.com or 828-894-5131. (photo submitted by Deborah Bundy)

Sol Driven Train performs in Rogers Park Aug. 10 Sol Driven Train (www.soldriventrain.com) of Charleston, S.C. will fill the stage and – if past performances are any indication – the entirety of Roger’s Park with high-energy music for young and old alike on Friday night, Aug. 10. Sponsored by Green River Adventures, the show is the fifth in Tryon’s 2012 Summer Tracks Concert Series. The show begins at 7 p.m. with Sol Driven Train’s award-winning children’s show. The band’s first children’s CD, “Tajar Tracks,” was voted Best Children’s Album of 2005 in South Carolina. The group’s dynamic collection of personalities and quirky combination of strings, horns and inventive lyrics make it a favorite with children and parents. “We have a lot of kids at our community and festival performances,” said Joel Timmons, singer, guitarist and songwriter with the group. “It is the cool-
