Welcome to Summer 2022 issue of the Tarner Newsletter After such a disrupted time for all it’s great to see so many community events and activities taking place, we especially welcome the launch of the South East Dance space, also Speak Outs Celebration Day on the 21st July, Phoenix’s Community Takeover in September and the Tarner festival will also be taking place in September. In this issue please see details on page 3 of the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund for small groups and do complete our cost of living survey.

Our brand new home for dance is here and every body’s welcome Tarner’s very own home for dance, The Dance Space opens its doors to the public on 16 July, kicking off a very special Our City Dances 2022 featuring a week of FREE dance classes, shows and events – and you’re invited.

The launch weekend will feature dance shows in and around the new building, including a ‘hip-hop ceilidh’ – a colourful and magical collision of maypole, clogging and breakdance - in the square outside the Dance Space. A week of free taster classes is on offer 18-22 July, including inclusive dance classes for young people with learning disabilities, classical Indian for kids, boys’ movement, and contemporary and street dance for girls and young women. Adults can have a go at contemporary dance, beginners’ rumba and tango, over 50s ballet barre, Pilates for healthy joints, and dementia-friendly dance classes.

The programme has been designed with the help of people and partners based in the Tarner area, including Puffin Nursery, Brooke Mead Extra Care Facility, and Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project.—To find out more visit southeastdance.org.uk or follow on social media @southeastdance

Tarner Newsletter Tarner and Eastern Road Healthy Neighbourhood Fund 2021 -22.

We are very happy to announce the successful applicants for the healthy neighborhood fund from public health.

Small pots of money are given to community groups and projects in Tarner and Eastern Road. The focus is on activities that enhance the health and wellbeing of a range of people and groups in the area. Movement to Music weekly exercise classes

Would you like £500 to help your group?

If you want to start or already know of a group that supports and develops health and wellbeing in the Tarner area, like the successfully funded ones above then you could apply now for up to £500 towards your group! You don’t have to be a constituted group to be able to apply.

Other previously funded activities include: Reminiscence sessions for older people, health and wellbeing volunteering, community gardening and greening projects and projects and activities for young people. The deadline for applications is September 30th 2022.

Fibro Flys is a support group for people living with Fibromyalgia & ME/CFS and their carers.

Community Takeover at Phoenix Art Space You are invited to our annual Community Takeover exhibition, on show in our main gallery from 3rd to 18th September. All our exhibitions are free of charge and we’re open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am-5pm.

Everyone is welcome to come along, find out more about our community engagement work and get involved in a creative activity or workshop.

Artists Daniel Locke and Hannah Chater have been working with residents who live near the Edward Street Quarter redevelopment to create a community portrait of the neighbourhood. On show in the exhibition will be a large scale star chart, made from children’s designs of stars and galaxies.

Other community engagement projects to be showcased in the exhibition include; The Art Club, with probation service users and staff; and our work with young people who attend the Extra Time Project at the Russell Martin Foundation.

Funday and Annual General Meeting

White Street Community Garden The garden on Edward Street is coming along nicely, this time 2 years ago it was just a mass of tall mustard plants with some poppies hiding at the back. Thank you to all the locals and their children, and passers-by who enjoy the garden and give us encouragement, the volunteers, and those who have donated compost, plants etc. Special thanks to Peter Spence for advice, and for encouraging us from the beginning. We have 2 new raised beds which are currently being prepared, so we can soon offer them to less abled gardeners who can't get down on their knees.

It was good to see a steady drift of residents stopping by in early May to see what was happening on our Funday and AGM, exploring the re-generated community rooms and welcoming the mayor, Alan Robins and his consort.

Outside were a bric-a-brac stall, recycled bikes bikes, a ‘Refugees in Exile’ booksale, Clay sessions supported by Graham from The Clay Club and 3 - D pens provided by Kat and Exploring Senses. Inside, the Early Childhood Project were busy with toys, books, and art for smaller children.

There are new steps up to the benches from Edward Street, and a blue slate path from White Street, kindly provided by McLaren. The Toy Library is back!

Tuesday, and Thursday 10am - 1pm. Wednesday 10am 3.30pm The toy library is free, open to families from all over the city and you can borrow toys and books for four weeks at a time, or swap more often if you want to.

We have books and toys for babies and children up to age 8 and lots of ‘how to’ books and information for parents/carers.

If you want to join but can’t make the opening times, we can arrange a toy pack for you to collect from the children’s centre.

Giant mural by award-winning Brighton artist Cosmo Sarson is unveiled at Edward Street Quarter

A giant mural inspired by Brighton’s eclectic art scene has been unveiled on the side of Brighton’s newest neighbourhood, Edward Street Quarter. Designed by internationally celebrated artist Cosmo Sarson, the artwork named Neptune, towers over residents at ten metres high, making it one of the largest murals in the city.

Community representatives, local residents, community groups and art institutions, as well the council were all involved wi.th commissioning the piece.

At 10m high, Neptune will be one of the largest murals in the city and according to Cosmo, the style of the mural also acknowledges the role Brighton plays as a city of sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community.Edward Street Quarter also comprises 125,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, as well as 20,000 sq ft of leisure, retail and hospitality facilities. The development is being jointly developed by Socius, First Base and Patron Capital Partners. Homes at the £120 million development are open for viewings, with a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom apartments - many with outside space and all with access to an impressive panoramic roof terrace.
