Portsladers get medieval in the garden

Do you suffer from indigestion? Is knee pain slowing you down? If so, then the Portslade Medieval Gardening project may be the answer. This new project is recreating a medieval herb and medicinal garden at Portslade’s Norman manor house ruins. The 10 volunteers will be planting various herbs and plants used over 900 years ago to both flavour food, and relieve common ailments suffered by Portslade residents back in the 12th century. Thanks to funding from the Portslade Healthy Neighbourhood Fund which is administered by Portslade Together, around 20 different herbs will be planted, including lavender, Jacob’s Ladder and St John’s Wort Clare, Project Leader for Fresh Start Portslade said, “whilst our volunteers will be learning new skills, the garden will also be a valuable learning opportunity for when we have manor open days, our work with three local schools and visits from other groups across the South East".

The gardening project is just one of over 30 different free events being organised by Fresh Start Portslade. Others include: history walks, history talks, medieval cooking class, how to trace your family tree, and health walks. Full details can be found at: www.portsladehistory.co.uk
