DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST,

The arts are back! We persisted together through a year and a half truly unlike any other—the most difficult time in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s history. Thanks to the support and loyalty of our members, audiences, and funders, we were able to reopen our indoor venues in September 2021 after a successful inperson Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival in June.

The timeline that allowed us to bring audiences back to the Cultural District tells an amazing tale of resilience, creativity, and hope. Normally we produce our Report to the Community annually, we decided that the stories of 2020 and 2021 could not be told separately, so we are instead presenting you with the 2020-21 Report to the Community.

2020 began like many years in the Trust’s history, as we raised the Future of Pittsburgh Ball at midnight on December 31, 2019, to welcome in the new year as part of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh. We tap danced with Sarah Reich in the Greer Cabaret Theater in January, explored Derek Hughes’ bag of tricks at Liberty Magic in February, and rocked the Benedum Center with Brit Floyd in March. With such a strong start to a new decade, who could have guessed what would come next?

On March 13, 2020, our world turned upside-down. We were halfway through our PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh run of the Tony Award-winning musical The Band’s Visit when COVID-19 became too much

Arts and culture organizations around the world faced unfathomable challenges in 2020 and 2021, and the Cultural Trust was no exception. Our staff and volunteers made the best of an unsettling situation, doing whatever they could to make sure the Trust was still standing when the danger of gathering together was past. We cannot acknowledge their loyalty, sacrifice, and dedication to our organization enough. We are all so grateful to be able to welcome millions of people back into the Cultural District each year to share experiences in the arts that connect us like nothing else can.

A PROMISING NEW YEAR

Pittsburgh’s Cultural District was thriving at the dawn of the new decade— vibrant and filled daily with eager crowds ready to experience unforgettable performing and visual arts from touring and regional artists alike.

The PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series continued into the new year with performances of Jesus Christ Superstar and Miss Saigon at the Benedum Center.

Liberty Magic welcomed quintessential funny man Derek Hughes to the intimate 66-seat theater.

At the Greer Cabaret Theater, pop culture tap ambassador, Sarah Reich, showcased tap as the main percussion element within a jazz ensemble.

YEAR

Part of the EQT Bridge Theater Series, An Elephant in the Garden presented a story about the importance of love, resolve, and hope in wartime and anytime.

In addition to theater and festivals the Cultural District is home to a handful of world-renowned art galleries. Each quarter a new art exhibition occupies each gallery. These transitions are commemorated by the quarterly Gallery Crawls which activate the Cultural District with unique and engaging art experiences.

The year started with the Crawl on January 24, 2020 the newest exhibitions at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s galleries; Tulips at SPACE Gallery, Misplaced Fortunes at 937 Gallery, and Meshes at the Wood Street Galleries.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

While winter was winding down in Pittsburgh, activity in the Cultural District was in full swing—business as usual. The Trust celebrated Black History Month with special events, Oscarnominated shorts rolled at the Harris Theater, and the Trust’s signature series continued to attract tens of thousands of guests to downtown.

Black History Month

Black History Month programming, Patterns of Pride: A Celebration of African American Arts and Culture, was a huge success. Trust teaching artists provided a variety of activities connected to African American art traditions for approximately 1,500 students and educators, at the Trust Arts Education Center in the James E. Rohr Building, Pittsburgh Minandeo, Pittsburgh Carmalt, Pittsburgh Brookline, and Sto-Rox Upper Elementary School.

AS THE WORLD SHUT

In March, as the Trust grappled with the reality of COVID-19 along with the rest of the world, stage curtains lowered, gallery doors closed, and ghost lights were all that illuminated the Cultural District’s venerated venues.

Just as quickly as scheduled performances and festivals were forced to postpone or cancel, however, the Trust became dedicated to exploring and mastering the virtual stage. The remainder of the year was dedicated to finding new ways for art to connect communities.

SETTING THE VIRTUAL STAGE

Finding ways to make connections virtually, when we could not come together in the Cultural District, became a full-time focus for the Trust.

The Arts Education department created one of the first virtual offerings by the Trust in the form of Creative Connections and Creative Curriculums, which were designed by regional teaching artists. The programs asked students to use materials that most people have on-hand in their households, were aligned with Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards, and covered visual arts, movement, music, and theater arts activities in video and downloadable file formats.

April also saw the launch of Harris Theater @Home and Liberty Magic @Home—extensions of two of the Trust’s signature programs created specifically for at-home enjoyment.

These two free offerings reached 10,000 students and educators during 2020.

APRIL 2020

During 2020, Trust Arts Education served 71,000 people through in-person and virtual arts education and arts integration activities in the Trust Arts Education Center, schools, and throughout the region.

Buzzword Pittsburgh, supported by PNC Foundation and The Heinz Endowments, postponed all in-person events in the community during 2020. Buzzword Pittsburgh produced and distributed 1,000 Buzzword Buzz Boxes to families in Homewood and the East End.

Buzz Boxes were physical kits that featured a vocabulary word, a book recommended by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, multiple activities with directions and art supplies for the children to use at home. The Buzzword Pittsburgh collaborative partners include the Carnegie Science Center, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy and Trying Together.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

The Trust’s volunteers play an essential role in helping the organization to further its mission of creating and fostering a downtown Cultural District serving the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is grateful to all the volunteers for their dedication and support of the arts and welcoming our guests to the Cultural District.

Kevin Wilkes, Vice President and Chief Security Officer for the Trust, made special deliveries to two volunteer households during April as part of National Volunteer Appreciation Month and the Trust’s “This is Just Intermission - Volunteer Appreciation Pizza Party.” Long time volunteers, Edith Kress, and Dottie and Bill Shuty were grateful to Kevin for making this special delivery and shared they could not wait to see everyone again in the Cultural District.

A VIRTUAL DEBUT

The Trust’s virtual festival production kicked off with the EQT Children’s Theater Festival @ Home in May.

ENSURING OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSION

Our nation and people around the globe expressed sorrow and protested for change and justice over the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. This deeply disturbing incident brought us face to face again with racial injustice and authoritarian brutality, as well as deep rooted cultural prejudices that cried out for everyone to acknowledge and take action.

The turmoil of the time further fueled the ongoing, diligent work of the Trust’s 5-year-old Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) Committee. The Committee, composed of a diverse group of full-time staff members, helped to refine the Trust’s DEAI Statement, as well as detail its anti-racism values and commitments to action published at TrustArts.org/DEAI.

“The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust values diversity, equity and inclusion as an organization, as an employer and as host to performers, artists and audiences from around the world. The Trust is deeply committed to providing diverse, high-quality programming and meaningful experiences that engage and enrich the community, expanding an appreciation for and a knowledge base of other people, cultures, values and perspectives...”

Each evening, the Festival presented livestreamed events on the Dollar Bank Digital Stage enabling a realtime communal experience. Additional performance videos were available on the 24/7 Stage to be enjoyed at visitors’ own pace, any time during the Festival’s 10 days. Performances included music, dance, and literary art.

A fully customized virtual Artist Market presented the work of 350+ artists who had been juried into the in-person Festival earlier that year. Virtual guests were encouraged to explore the artists’ work at TrustArts.org/TRAF.

Seventy-five percent of participating artists sold work online, including 20% of artists generating more than $1,000 in sales.

Long-time Festival concessionaires, food trucks, and other local restaurateurs embraced the spirit of the Festival by making special boxed lunches and other food offerings available for sale in-person in downtown Pittsburgh.

150 individuals and families made donations to support the Festival.

The Juried Visual Art Exhibition featured 52 works by 40 artists selected by an esteemed panel of jurors that sought to “explore ideas about altered realities, utopias, and challenging the status quo.” Web pages were custom-built for every work in the virtual show, including audio clips from participating artists explaining more about their work that appeared in photos and video.

DIFFICULT DECISIONS

The Trust was forced to make difficult cost-cutting decisions as a result of the pandemic’s effect on business, including the furloughing of all parttime employees in March and just under 40% of full-time staff at the end of July. Remaining staff members absorbed significant pay cuts.

$30 million.

These measures were necessary to maintain basic levels of business operations. The Trust began 2020 with an operating budget of $65 million, 83% of which was funded through earned revenue. When virtually all earned revenue ceased in March 2020, the result was a loss of $30 million. Of 2,000 events planned for 2020, the Trust cancelled 1,500. Some costs remained fixed, however. The Trust manages more than 1 million square feet of space in the Cultural District. In order to maintain the theaters and other artistic spaces, the Trust spends upwards of $250,000 every month.

When earned revenue came to a stop, the Trust took a financial loss of of 2,000 events planned in 2020, 1,500 were cancelled.

In addition, the Trust maintains Shared Services functions for other Cultural District organizations, as well as Tessitura, the premier customer relationship management software on the market which processes more than $100 million worth of ticketing and fundraising transactions annually. These services are typically funded through ticketing fees remitted by all participating organizations. With no ticket sales, the Trust had to advance close to $2 million to keep these mission-critical functions operating for itself, the resident companies, and other arts organizations.

The Cultural Trust hoped to remind gala attendees and viewers out of the bleak universal moment we were experiencing by providing a reminder of the culture, art, community and togetherness we work to inspire, and dream about arriving in that space once again.

Thanks to Lead Sponsor PNC and other sponsors, and the generous support of individual ticket buyers, the event met its fundraising goal, an important step in keeping the Trust operational until we could gather again in the Cultural District.

CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY TO MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE IN A DISCONNECTED TIME

The Pittsburgh Humanities Festival, a production of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Humanities Center at Carnegie Mellon University, had originally been scheduled for March.

It was delayed to October, and the virtual version was presented completely free to all. Among the “smart talk about stuff that matters” was Robert “Faruq” Wideman discussing his collection of essays and other writings, Life Sentences: The Amazing Journey of Walking Out of an American Prison. Wideman was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in a 1975 murder; his sentence was commuted and he was released on July 2, 2019.

The Open Call winner was Boaz Frankel with his discussion topic Don’t Google This — Offline Curiosity in an Online World.

Staycee Pearl, co-artistic director of PearlArts Studios and STAYCEE PEARL dance project, discussed the topic, Dance Maker: Blackness in White Spaces.

As the DEAI Committee’s work continued, executive management convened an additional group of full-time employees charged with creating a comprehensive audit program to assess the Trust’s programs, policies, procedures, and practices through a DEAI lens.

Through a partnership with more than 20 other performing arts centers across the country, the Trust presented Live from the West Side: Women of Broadway.

One live-stream performance from New York’s Shubert Virtual Studios took place in each month October through December. The series featured two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone, Tony Award winner Laura Benanti, and critically acclaimed actress and singer Vanessa Williams. The performers thrilled audiences with Broadway showtunes, pop songs, and personal stories from their lives.

Jonathan D. Moreno explored an unprecidented revolution in health care and explains the problem with America’s wanting everything that medical science has to offer without debating its merits and limits in Everyone wants to get to heaven but nobody wants to die.

The DEAI Audit Task Force sought to quantify and benchmark the Trust’s status on DEAI issues to reveal opportunities for progress and allow the organization to chart a course into the future.

The DEAI Audit Task Force identified several constituencies as priorities for assessment and focused on two of them – Trust staff members and artists hired for performances, exhibitions, and festivals – as focus areas for 2020 and 2021.

The Black Violin: Impossible Tour Virtual Education Field Trip was a huge success throughout November and December.

Highmark First Night Pittsburgh 2021

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust refused to let the calendar flip to 2021 without marking the occasion and attempting to bring the community together through the power of the arts. Long-time media partner on New Year’s Eve, KDKA-TV, worked with the Trust, Highmark, and other partners to produce a one-of-a-kind TV-only version of Pittsburgh’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

The live show was available on KDKA-TV and streamed online by CBS Pittsburgh. It featured an array of national and regional artists performing live from the Cultural District and from locations around the country. The festivities extended into homes as First Night Friend VIP Experience packages were mailed to supporters—replete with celebratory noisemakers, fine chocolates, holiday greeting cards, and more.

Created in partnership with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, this public art installation shared a collective visioning for the future of health and wellness in this region. Through its visual program, Streaming Space brought together a compilation of images and sound pieces that activates memories of humankind’s relationship to the planet, settles the chaos of the present, and allows space for healing and care in the future.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

The Trust hosted a reimagined Volunteer Celebration Zoom Call during the month of December with over 175 participants. The call consisted of various Thank You messages from the staff including Kevin McMahon, President and CEO, and Rona Nesbit, Executive Vice President, which were greatly appreciated by the volunteers. The Celebration was highly successful with tremendous feedback from the volunteers.

ROADMAP REOPENING TO

What would it take to reopen theaters, galleries, and public spaces for the community to gather in the Cultural District once again? What health and safety protocols would be required?

For months, a taskforce of facilities operations, programming, patron services, ISTS, administration, and marketing had been meeting to discuss what the roadmap to reopening looked like, in concert with the national and international conversation.

JANUARY

In early 2021, the Trust’s executive and operations staff continued to review the many details for maintaining its venues and facilities and focusing on best practices to achieve the highest level of health and safety upgrades as part of the road to reopening. As part of that plan, the Trust applied for the International Global Biorisk Council accreditation (GBAC) for the Benedum Center, Byham Theater, and Greer Cabaret Theater. Applications followed for the Harris Theater and O’Reilly Theater. This 20-step process resulted in a global certification of all these venues accrediting the facilities for using the most up-to-date cleaning and disinfection practices currently available in the industry.

In addition to the GBAC accreditation, the operations plan included Batronix electrostatic disinfection equipment use, touchless restroom fixtures being installed; and environmental alterations surrounding the existing HVAC systems, with research being done into best practices including but not limited to needlepoint bipolar ionization, enhanced filtration, and increased outside air intake.

Evolv Edge contactless guest screening units were ordered. The contactless guest screening units were one of the many tools utilized to welcome returning patrons back to a healthier and improved guest entry experience. This, coupled with recently vetted training on contactless security screening measures for Trust screening personnel, was one important part of COVID-19 mitigation practices used to instill confidence in audiences, staff, volunteers, and artists for the safe return of Trust events.

A NEW CONSTELLATION

IN CELEBRATION OF BLACKNESS AND BLACK PITTSBURGH

Many cultures believe that constellations are created by the stars, planets, and other objects of light in the cosmos. However, some Indigenous communities of the Americas, like the Inca, found constellations in the dark spaces between the light.

This was the inspiration for 202021: a new constellation, an exhibit curated by local artist and writer Tereneh Idia. It featured 11 Black artists in nine locations throughout the Cultural District that could be viewed safely outdoors. The exhibit, the art, the space between, and the act of the viewer moving to each installation, created a new celestial body, a ground constellation. Though the Trust’s galleries were still closed, viewers were able to immerse themselves in the art in celebration of Blackness and Black Pittsburgh.

In addition, the #notwhite collective’s We Are The Global Majority window installation at SPACE celebrates the dreams and vision of 13 women artists who identify as non-white. This exhibition was made possible by a generous grant from The Heinz Endowments.

FEBRUARY 2021

CONNECTING HYBRID ART EXPERIENCE TO A

MARCH 2021

The Trust’s Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement department launched the Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District Virtual Edition .

The virtual Crawl provided the Trust an opportunity to amplify the work of local artists —most of whom identify as BIPOC.

The Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District Virtual Edition enabled the Trust to engage with 70 local artists. All were able to showcase their art to the Crawl audience and were either paid directly or provided a platform to sell their work to the public.

The Crawl was comprised of three “stops” – the first showcased the public art exhibit 202021:A New Constellation, curated by artist Tereneh Idia and featured the work of 11 Pittsburgh-based artists. The second stop, launched in April, showcased the work of Jordan Montgomery of Driving While Black Records, Ryan Brown of Make Sure You Have Fun, performing artist, Kelsey Robinson, and Chris Boles of Redfishbowl who are all members of the Trust’s Community Leaders Advisory Committee. The stop also featured several other Pittsburgh based visual and performing artists and makers. The final stop showcased the public art exhibit We Are The Global Majority, featuring the allwomen artist group, #notwhite collective.

BROADWAY BRACKET BRAWL

In March, the marketing team launched Broadway Bracket Brawl, which pitted 32 musicals from our PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series against each other in a March Madness-style tournament.

Over the course of the campaign, more than 430 brackets were submitted, and a cumulative total of 31,000 votes were cast. Hamilton won the tournament and was crowned Pittsburgh’s Favorite Musical

Broadway fans were invited to submit their predicted winners for each match-up prior to the start of the voting period to a chance to win a grand prize. From March 18 - April 2, participants voted for their favorite musicals on the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s social media channels.

DEAI AUDIT TASK FORCE

In its ongoing pursuit of benchmarking where the Trust stood on issues related to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion, the Task Force issued a staff survey in February of 2021.

The survey solicited staff views on the organization’s DEAI efforts, which provided the most substantive quantitative and

qualitative data on these issues in the organization’s history. Simultaneously, the Task Force developed a first-of-its-kind method in the industry for benchmarking diversity among hired artists and recording measures of equity related to those presentations—all to enable continued analysis and improvement on this key initiative.

HEALTH TAKES

CENTER STAGE

Preparing for the in-person Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival two months later, the Trust’s Roadmap to Reopening working group continued to develop health and safety protocols for Cultural District venues. It also outlined a request for guests to do their part. The Guest Pledge was developed to ask for commitment from Cultural District visitors to keep the entire community healthy and safe.

Since there is no “zero risk,” there is not one individual control method that will eliminate the Trust’s risk.

Guests will play a major role in this process, being asked to stay home when sick, follow policies, wash hands, and wear a mask. Modifications to HVAC systems, improving air filtration and fresh air intake, touchless restroom fixtures, mobile ticketing and implementing a gold standard cleaning plan with the use of Batronix will be implemented. The Trust has received the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council for the efforts thus far.

After months of deliberation and consultation with health and safety experts, the Trust and its partners announced in April that the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival would be produced in a hybrid format, welcoming guests to the Cultural District for in-person arts experiences for the first time in 15 months, while also providing virtual experiences for guests preferring to connect from home.

SAFETY REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY

For the second consecutive year, the annual EQT Children’s Theater Festival took place on the virtual stage, welcoming artists from around the globe.

The Trust continues to demonstrate its thought leadership in the safety and security space as Kevin Wilkes, the Trust’s Vice President and Chief Security Officer (CSO), was featured in the cover story of Security Magazine, the nation’s leading publication and resource for security practitioners and protection professionals. The Trust’s CSO served as a source contributor for the article, “Ensuring the Security of Arts, Museums and Cultural Heritage Facilities During Lockdown and Beyond.”

COMING TOGETHER

It was a great scene each day to welcome everyone as they gathered again in person during this year’s festival. The festival’s long-standing tradition of connecting and uplifting us through the arts is truly inspirational, and even more important now more than ever. I express my gratitude to the many organizations and individuals who made this event possible and look forward to continuing to build upon this legacy for our community and future generations.”

In another moment of positive momentum toward reopening the Cultural District, the Trust was pleased to invite guests to celebrate the dedication of a parklet to Trustee Jane Arkus, her late husband Leon, and prominent sculptor James Rosati. Jane and Leon Arkus donated Rosati’s sculpture DUO to the Trust to enhance its portfolio of public art. The sculpture and dedication plaque are at the corner of 9th Street and Penn Avenue.

The plaque reads: James Rosati (1911-1988) was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He moved to New York City in 1944 to perfect his artistic trade. Rosati is perhaps best known for his sculptures in stone from the 1960s, and the 1972 stainless steel Ideogram that stood over 23 feet tall on the plaza between Towers 1 and 2 of the World Trade Center in New York City. He has over 40 monumental pieces of sculpture located in the United States and around the world.

2021 came to a close on a high note. Revelry in the streets of the Cultural District was not just a communal celebration of guests being together again in-person, but also an expression of hope for what was to come in 2022.

As some sense of normalcy loomed, the Trust’s plans for the future began to come into clearer view.

In addition to bringing back its full complement of arts programming in 2022, plans were crytallizing for the bold announcement of a comprehensive capital fundraising campaign that would transform the Cultural District and ensure its viability as a world-class destination for arts and entertainment into the future.
