DEAR FRIENDS AND PARTNERS, Like arts organizations across the nation, we faced our fair share of obstacles in 2022. While we had already begun the process of reopening our Trust venues in September 2021, we still found ourselves on an uphill journey as we sought to fully relaunch our in-persons events, continue to safely refill our venues with audiences, and carefully rethink the way we presented art to reflect changes in expectations and behaviors. We turned this time of transition into an opportunity for us to grow—a year of new beginnings. Thanks to all of you—our guests, partners, funders, staff, and volunteers—we were able to begin our recovery from the hardships of the pandemic while successfully navigating this new environment. Your eagerness allowed us to reanimate the Cultural District, infusing this season of programming with an electric energy that continues to inspire us as we forge a brighter future. Our positive momentum was not only signaled by the fact that our stages, screens, and streets were lit up once again, but it was also underscored by strong numbers. Overall, the number of tickets sold and number of productions across the Cultural District exceeded 80% of pre-pandemic levels, which shows us that we are on the right track in our recovery. Throughout 2022, we have felt your support in so many ways, including your incredible response to our comprehensive Capital Campaign, Trust: Building on the Dream. Despite the difficult circumstances brought on by the pandemic, you stepped up and enabled us to exceed our initial goal of raising $150 million over three years. Instead, we brought in $175 million in commitments—allowing us to weather these last few years, remain fiscally responsible, and become a more forward-looking organization in the years to come.

Another factor that fed into our 2022 success and helped us through challenging times was our Shared Services program. For many years, this program has united us with Pittsburgh Cultural District member organizations as we increase efficiencies and decrease costs across our operations. This initiative has strengthened our respective financial standings and, in turn, makes it possible for all of our organizations to enhance the Pittsburgh arts scene. The end of 2022 was also marked by a historic milestone as our President & CEO for the past 21 years, Kevin McMahon, announced his retirement. Kendra Whitlock Ingram, alongside our incoming Board Chair, David Holmberg, was selected to lead our organization into the future. We would like to extend our most heartfelt thanks to Kevin for all he has brought to this organization and to the Pittsburgh community. Now with Kendra and David at the helm, we are excited to see how we continue to gain momentum at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust as we embark on this next chapter. Finally, we must express our deepest gratitude to the backbone of our organization: our staff and volunteers. With doors open and programming back in-person, the Trust celebrated a successful 2022 season filled with eager audiences, new offerings, the return of fan favorite events, and an outpouring of support from the community.

Year Peak in Dance Council Subscriptions

The Pittsburgh Dance Council celebrated a strong season, reaching its highest subscription rate in over 15 years. Its most attended show—STREB Extreme Action—attracted over 10,000 guests across four performances at the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The Dance Council also broke new ground with its presentation of Intensional Particle, created by choreographer and multidisciplinary artist, Hirokai Umeda. This performance, held at Wood Street Galleries, was the first-ever collaboration between the Dance Council and the Trust’s Visual Arts programming line.

Performances at Liberty Magic

Liberty Magic offered more programming than any year prior, with 16 different theatrical magic shows and over 350 performances. The venue also made its first foray into children’s magic with Mr. Messado’s School of Magic for the Young and Young at Heart, which quickly became the venue’s longest running and most consistently sold-out show. Magicians were not the only artists to take the stage. Liberty Magic also served as the cold weather home for the Trust’s BNY Mellon presents JazzLive Series and provided entertainment during Highmark First Night Pittsburgh and the Gallery Crawls.

260 Days Open at Our Galleries

Art was more accessible than ever, as the Trust’s five Visual Arts galleries were open 260 days of the year and experienced record attendance. Another first, SPACE Gallery welcomed a Pittsburgh-based artist, Ian Brill, for a solo show. The Juried Visual Arts Exhibition, part of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, was installed and stayed open for a full six weeks—a longer run than ever before. Programming also continued in 820 Liberty Gallery, 707 Penn Gallery and 937 Liberty Gallery, housing installations including The Bennett Prize, a solo show by Jo-Anne Bates, and a group show with Boom Concepts.

In 2022, the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival made its debut appearance in the Cultural District—marking the festival’s first location change in decades. Over 10 days, the festival attracted hundreds of thousands of guests and generated millions of dollars in economic activity for Pittsburgh. Audiences were treated to the most diverse lineup of featured music performers in festival history and the grand opening of the Giant Eagle Backyard as a summer-long destination for arts and entertainment.

Highmark First Night Pittsburgh 2023 brought thousands of people into the city streets to ring in the New Year. The Trust continued to present the festival completely free, eliminating ticketed entry and keeping the majority of the activities outside. The Ice Maze by Rich Bubin and and INEZ, the festival’s headliner, both drew large crowds with 1,200 guests and 5,000 guests, respectively. Other festival favorites like the Giant Eagle Parade and the AHN Family Area were presented alongside new offerings like backstage tours at our historic theaters and Hirokai Umeda’s Intensional Particle in Wood Street Galleries.

Shows at our Hybrid Festival

The Trust’s Children’s Theater Series and Bridge Theater Series relaunched its in-person events with three productions at the Byham Theater—delighting over 3,000 children and adults. Due to COVID restrictions, this was the first season to fully take place in the Cultural District, with no performances occurring in suburban venues.

Guest Services greatly improved accessibility for patrons across the Cultural District. For the first time, guests who needed ASL interpretation could purchase those seats online, allowing for a more convenient ordering process. At the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, ASL interpretation was present at all mainstage performances and free wheelchair rentals were available at information booths. During the EQT Children’s Theater Festival, six performances of “Starshine!,” a sensory friendly program, were offered. In addition to programming improvements, Guest Services also coordinated four accessibility training sessions, which 70 District staff members attended.

Volunteer Services grew its volunteer program to include over 500 active volunteers, with 82 “Diamond” volunteers logging 500 hours or more. The department also increased trainings and expanded its volunteer outreach to wider demographics by launching its student volunteering program, Beyond The Stage, in partnership with 30 students from Pittsburgh CAPA. The grand total of volunteer hours completed in 2022 at the Trust was over 72,000.

Title 1 Schools Served

The Trust’s Arts Education Department continued to make a significant impact in schools, early childhood centers, and community organizations across 16 school districts and 5 counties in Western Pennsylvania. Through a variety of programming, Arts Education engaged with 23,501 students and 1,120 educators. The department focused on partnering with under resourced schools— 78% of all schools engaged were Title 1. The department also celebrated the reactivation of Disney Musicals in Schools, a 17-week program designed to develop sustainable musical theatre programs in elementary schools. Pittsburgh Faison, Pittsburgh Dillworth, and Turner Elementary participated in the relaunch.

On the Real Estate front, the Trust focused on improving its outdoor spaces across the Cultural District. Its efforts included enhancing green spaces with new trees and fresh landscaping, beautifying public art and spaces, stepping up efforts to keep the streets and sidewalks clean, and making improvements to the Giant Eagle Backyard at 8th and Penn.

Through the efforts of the Development Department, the Trust raised $10.4 million for operations in 2022. The total number of individual donors was 13,491, an increase of 46% over 2021—signaling a rebound to prepandemic levels. In the fall, the Trust: Building on the Dream Gala exceeded its goal by raising $436,000, thanks to the wonderful support from lead sponsor PPG and chairs Wanda and Michael McGarry, along with over 400 attendees. Lastly, The Chocolate Bar, a popular fundraising and membership event, returned in person, attracting hundreds of attendees.

New Art Partners at Gallery Crawls

Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement brought audiences back into the Cultural District with long-standing events alongside innovative, new initiatives. Returning to an in-person format, the quarterly Gallery Crawls were enhanced with the addition of 56 new artistic partners. BNY Mellon presents JazzLive, a free weekly series, attracted 6,300 attendees with shows in the Giant Eagle Backyard and Liberty Magic—both first-time venues. The department also launched two new initiatives, the PNC Broadway Pittsburgh Talk Back Series and the Trust’s 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop Celebration—a celebration that kicked off with the Trust’s first-ever Hip Hop Summit in partnership with 1Hood Media and Rivers of Steel.

He was also instrumental in helping the Cultural Trust become renowned for its ability to attract over two million people each year to more than 2,000 events.

CREATING AND RENOVATING ARTISTIC SPACES Several arts venues and creative spaces were built and renovated while Kevin was at the helm, including the building of the Greer Cabaret Theater, SPACE Gallery, Future Tenant Gallery, the Trust Arts Education Center and Peirce Studio at the James E. Rohr Building, 937 Liberty Avenue performance and gallery space, Arcade Comedy Theater, and Liberty Magic Theater. In addition, public art blossomed with such installations as Magnolias for Pittsburgh, FLOW, Cell Phone Disco, Water Cube, Duo, and the installation of artistic bike racks in and around the Cultural District.

It was this belief that sparked the comprehensive Capital Campaign, Trust: Building on the Dream. Completed in 2022, this campaign has already unearthed many possibilities for the Trust to expand upon the vision of our founders, fuel the economic recovery of the Downtown area, and launch the Cultural District into the next phase of its evolution. Thanks to your help, the Trust exceeded its $150 million goal and concluded its campaign with $175 million to support these priority areas: 1. PROGRESS IN MOTION Your generosity is already making a difference in our Cultural District. BENEDUM MARQUEE RESTORATION In December 2022, the Stanley Photoplay marquee was removed for repair and restoration to increase energy efficiency while maintaining its classic look. This project has been made possible with generous funding from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and others.

GREER CABARET THEATER In May 2022, we announced that the Greer Cabaret Theater would undergo renovations to elevate the guest experience. Since then, we’ve been preparing for a grand opening which will occur in the late summer of 2023.

937 LIBERTY AVENUE Over the summer of 2022, we renovated the building’s interior to improve its accessibility and safety as well as to provide a platform for other arts organizations. We reopened the gallery space in 937 Liberty Avenue in late 2022 with the exhibition, “Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realist Painters.” Once renovations have been completed, the building will also include a fully outfitted 100-seat theater on the first floor. The third floor will house a 50-seat flex space / rehearsal stage / artist’s studio.

In 2022, the Trust’s ongoing partnership with the Cultural District’s member companies continued to enrich the vibrancy and diversity of Pittsburgh’s arts and entertainment scene.

PITTSBURGH BALLET THEATRE Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has built a legacy of excellence and innovation since 1969. The Ballet strives to be the source of and ambassador for extraordinary ballet experiences.

PITTSBURGH CLO The CLO is dedicated to the preservation, creation, and promotion of the American musical theater art form.

PITTSBURGH OPERA A vibrant force in Pittsburgh’s art community, Pittsburgh Opera continues to produce a wide range of high-quality work within the operatic repertoire.

PITTSBURGH PUBLIC THEATER The Pittsburgh Public Theater continues to deliver artistically diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality at its home in the Cultural District’s O’Reilly Theater.

THE AUGUST WILSON AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER The August Wilson African American Cultural Center is dedicated to sharing the African American experience and presenting artistic expression that reflects the prestige, authority, and vision illuminated in the work of August Wilson, whose birthplace was Pittsburgh, PA. The center has been open to the public since 2009.

PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs music at the highest level of expression and artistic excellence, providing stellar experiences for audiences at Heinz Hall.

ARCADE COMEDY THEATER Founded in 2013, Arcade Comedy Theater elevates and advances the art of comedy in Pittsburgh. In 2017, the troupe continued to thrive in its new location at 943 Liberty Avenue, a multi-use visual arts and performance facility owned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

BRICOLAGE PRODUCTION COMPANY Founded in 2001, Bricolage Production Company brings immersive theater to the Pittsburgh theater scene.

PITTSBURGH PLAYWRIGHTS THEATRE COMPANY Since 2005, the company has been producing works by local playwrights, from accomplished masters to promising new talents. Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company nurtures a racially and culturally diverse community of playwrights, directors, actors, and technical specialists.

The 2022 fiscal year was a positive start to our multi-year journey of recovery—even as some of our more traditional revenue streams continued to be impacted by the pandemic. Spurred on by the challenges of 2022, we were inspired to find new ways of ensuring a long and stable future for the Trust in an unpredictable environment.

CREATIVE FUNDRAISING To fill the gaps in our revenue streams, we needed to fundraise smarter. These efforts included our Capital Campaign, which not only solidified the Trust’s annual operating budget but also allowed for the growth of our endowment.

CONTINUED COST SAVINGS Since its inception, our Shared Services program has played an integral role in saving costs for our organization and our resident companies. By deploying, administering, and managing an integrated ticketing, fundraising, and marketing platform, we have provided an essential resource for other organizations which has saved the community millions of dollars each year. Looking ahead, the Trust remains committed to building for the future as we recognize the importance of adapting and evolving in the face of uncertainty.

LOOKING FORWARD On February 1, 2023, the Cultural Trust’s Board of Trustees named Kendra Whitlock Ingram as the third President & CEO in the organization’s history. A Scranton, PA native, and Duquesne University graduate, Ingram held senior roles at some of the country’s most venerable arts institutions over the past 20 years. David Holmberg, Highmark Health President and CEO and Cultural Trust Board Trustee who chaired the committee searching for Kevin’s replacement, said: “We were very fortunate to attract a highly qualified pool of candidates from around the globe.
