Daylight Saving Time (DST), the yearly practice of setting clocks forward one hour between March and November has been observed in much of the United States since 1966. The idea behind DST is to “save” natural light, since spring, summer, and early fall days typically get dark later in the evening compared to late fall and winter days. The non-DST period between November and March is known as Standard Time.

When DST starts at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2022, we’ll set our clocks forward one hour, resulting in one less hour of sleep that night. Then, at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2022, we’ll set our clocks back one hour.

While adjusting the time by one hour may not seem like too drastic a change, sleep experts have noted troubling trends that occur during the transition – particularly in March when we “spring forward.” The change can impact your mood and overall health, increasing your risk for gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches and joint pain, blood sugar and insulin system disruption, high blood pressure, seizures, and hallucinations. Diminished sleep can also create problems during sleep, causing sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and other sleep disorder symptoms.

“With most adults needing 7 to 8 hours of good-quality sleep every 24 hours, when we lose even one hour, we build up sleep debt that can impair our performance and be detrimental to our health,” says Alex McDonald, D.O., a primary care physician with Grandview Medical Group in Hoover. “The only way to pay off this debt is to get enough sleep.”

Dr. McDonald suggests these simple actions you can take in advance of the time change to help ease the transition and enhance your health over time: • Gradually Alter Your Bedtime: Two to three days before the transition to DST, consider waking up 15-20 minutes earlier than usual. Then, on the Saturday before the time change, set your alarm clock back by an additional 15-20 minutes.

Adjusting your wake-up time in steps can help the body make a smoother transition.

• Practice Good Sleep Hygiene: Sleep hygiene refers to practices that can influence sleep for better or worse. To ease the time change transition, refrain from consuming alcohol before bed. While drinking can cause you to feel sleepy initially, alcohol also causes sleep disruptions and poor sleep quality.

• Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine: Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day – including the weekends – is a healthy practice that can also prepare you for time changes.

• Spend Time Outdoors: Exposure to natural light can alleviate feelings of tiredness that often accompany time changes. Spending time outside during the day also suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone released in the evening to help you feel tired and ready for bed.

• Nap in Moderation: People who experience sleep debt as a result of DST may find some relief by taking short naps during the day. Limit naps to 20 minutes or less; otherwise, you may wake up feeling groggy. Rather than adjusting your wakeup time on Sunday morning of the time change, consider a nap that afternoon.

• Avoid Caffeine Too Close to Bedtime: Studies have found caffeine consumed within six hours of bedtime can disrupt your sleep cycle. Moderate amounts of caffeine in the morning or early afternoon should have less of an effect on your sleep.

“Good quality sleep plays a large role in promoting good health and success in life,” says Dr. McDonald.

HTHS Cheerleaders place 5th in the Nation!

Our Hewitt-Trussville High School Competition Cheerleaders traveled to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at The Walt Disney World to compete at the 2022 National High School Cheerleading Championship which took place February 11-13. The NHSCC is produced by Universal Cheerleaders Association, and is the “pinnacle of cheerleading competitions for high school cheerleaders across the country”. All teams invited to attend the NHSCC must qualify at a regional competition in the fall of 2021.

Over the course of three days, HTHS Competition Cheerleaders competed four times. Their last performance was Sunday, Feb 13th at finals. They performed a flawless routine and landed 5th in the nation!

There was a 0.6 difference between the first and the fifth placed teams.

2022 Dance Team Tryout Information

There will be an optional pre-clinic for those interested in trying out for the HTMS dance team on February 7 from 3:15-5:00. Clinic will be from March 7-9 from 3:15-5:30. Coach Ryan learned of this accolade recently through the Metro South Conference President. Coach Ryan led the Hewitt-Trussville Middle School Wrestling Team to win the Metro South Championship for the 2021-2022 season.

Congratulations to him and all of his student-athletes for representing Trussville so well!

TCS Foundation Casino Night Shatters Fundraising Record

More than $20,000.00 was raised at the Trussville City Schools Foundation’s (TCSF) 3rd Annual Casino Night - breaking all previous fundraising records. The event-packed evening, hosted at Ferus Artisan Ales in the new Trussville Entertainment District, included games, a live auction, incredible student-crafted culinary creations, and more.

More than 150 supporters showed up for this great cause, which raises money that gets directly invested into Trussville City Schools classrooms. In its first year (2020), Casino Night collected $7,000.00.

In 2021, the event raised $12,000.00.

HTMS Student Earns Art Contest Accolades

Student Sophia Kibby conceptualized and realized an art design so compelling that it brought home top state honors to Hewitt-Trussville Middle School for two years in a row.

For the second consecutive year, HTMS has brought home Alabama Youth Art Month (YAM) Flag Design Contest (middle school division).

YAM emphasizes the value of art education for all children, encourages support for quality school art programs, and promotes art material safety.

HTHS Scholars Bowl Team

The Hewitt-Trussville High School Varsity Scholars Bowl Team has officially qualified for the 2022 NAQT National Championship in Atlanta.

This is the cream of the crop when it comes to quiz bowl tournaments and we are proud that our young scholars will represent Trussville City Schools in such grand fashion on the national stage. Earlier this month, the Varsity Scholar’s Bowl Team broke the school’s record for points per game average.

The TCS Facility Dogs (Skye/HTHS and Bullet/HTMS) were the featured guests at this week’s Trussville Daybreak Rotary Club meeting. Handlers (and TCS counselors) Laura Stalls and Krista DeMent spoke on the partnership between TCS and Service Dogs Alabama, which began in 2021. Skye and Bullet are trained to assist with intervention tasks and breaking patterns of disruptive behaviors in classrooms, counseling sessions, and in testing spaces. Research has indicated that dogs can impact student performance by reducing stress and increasing motivation, focus, and task persistence.

2. Your blood pressure is rising.

High blood pressure is a serious matter. Your blood pressure should be below 120/80. 1. Your workout seems harder than usual.

Exercise intolerance is often a sign of early heart disease. 3. Your resting heart rate increases.

Your heart rate is a measure of how hard your heart is working to pump blood throughout your body. A normal resting heart rate is between 60100 beats per minute. In general, the stronger your heart, the lower your resting heart rate. An elevated heart rate may be a signal that you’ve been neglecting your health, and your heart is paying for it.

Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cancer Patients with Radiation Damage Last year, half of the nearly 2 million people diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. underwent radiation therapy to destroy malignant cells. Thanks to new developments in radiation oncology, many patients end treatment and start a new life chapter. However, even though radiotherapy is very good at killing cancer cells, it can also impact nearby healthy cells. Some patients experience delayed radiation injury – painful and occasionally life threatening side effects that present themselves months or even years later.

Approximately 30,000 of the 2 million U.S. cancer patients treated with radiotherapy last year will eventually report symptoms including significant pain, infection, bleeding, and physical discomfort. Radiation damage can occur just about anywhere on or within the body including the head and neck, chest wall, abdomen or pelvis. For example, patients who receive pelvic radiotherapy for urological cancers may experience significant abdominal pain, urinary frequency or urgency, and blood in the urine. Patients with head or neck cancer can suffer from osteoradionecrosis, a condition in which bone tissue weakens and deteriorates.

It is an unusual but serious complication that can result in death of the bone and surrounding tissues and can lead to bone exposure through the skin. Again, these symptoms can appear years after treatment.

The likelihood of radiation damage depends on several factors including a patient’s sensitivity to radiotherapy, the type and dose of treatment, and the location of the cancer. Scarring, infection, and a lack of blood supply to treated areas can result in damage or death of surrounding tissues.

Rotary Announces Student, Teacher of the Month

Radiation injury can greatly impact a patient’s quality of life; therefore finding symptomatic relief is worthy of investigation. For some patients, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can eradicate long-term damage, allowing them to get back to their lives and/or successfully undergo additional reconstructive procedures such as breast or facial surgeries. With limited treatment options for radiation damage, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a viable non-invasive treatment to consider.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Providing Symptom Relief for Patients with Radiation Injury First used in the U.S. in the early 20th century, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has emerged as a very effective treatment for patients suffering from the late effects of radiotherapy. HBOT can revitalize damaged tissues by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the areas that need it most through the growth of new blood vessels and increased circulation. This stimulates the healing process and can greatly improve the patient’s quality of life.

During treatment, the patient is given 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized hyperbaric chamber. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation while allowing new blood vessels to form in affected areas. In other words, it speeds and promotes healing.

“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is very helpful for patients suffering from radiation injury because exposing the body to high levels of oxygen under pressure increases blood flow and vascularization to the area, which promotes healing,” said Dr. G. Blaine Bishop at Grandview Wound Care Center. “Increasing oxygen concentrations in the blood can be a tremendous help for people with radiation damage or chronic wounds. It offers a huge potential benefit with low risk.”

The Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club is pleased to announce its Don Haisten Student of the Month (SOM) for February, Michelle Martinez-Barrera. Michelle is a senior at Clay-Chalkville High School and has been involved in such clubs as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and HOSA, an international student organization which promotes career opportunities in the health care industry. She helps with blood drives and sock drives, and she also tutors students who need to learn English and other subjects. She received the academic achievement award her freshman and junior years, as well as the outstanding freshman award and student of the month for March 2020. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta.

Her selection for Teacher of the Month (TOM) is Mrs. Farah Bridges. Says Michelle, “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to work in the medical field. I thought I might want to be a doctor but Mrs. Bridges has helped me learn about other professions through her patient care technician class. I now want to pursue a career in nursing. I will never forget her shining nature.” Mrs. Bridges has previously been selected by her students as Rotary’s Teacher of the Month, which speaks to her ability to connect with her students.

Million Dollar Spaghetti Casserole

1 lb. of Ground Beef 28 oz spaghetti sauce 8 oz of Cream Cheese 1/4 cup of Sour Cream 1/2 lb. of Cottage Cheese Whole Stick of Butter 1lb pasta such as elbow noodles or rotini Bag of shredded cheese or Mozzerella optional: diced onion, garlic Preheat oven to 350. Boil the noodles. Mix together the cream cheese, sour cream and cottage cheese in a mixer to thoroughly mixed together. Set aside. If you have chosen to use onion saute for 3 minutes then toss in the hamburger meat. Brown hamburger meat in a skillet with garlic and drain. Add spaghetti sauce and mix together. Put a few slices of butter in bottom of a 9×13 casserole dish. Layer half of the noodles in the bottom of the dish. Spread the cheese mixture over this layer. Then add the rest of the noodles on top of this with a few pats of butter. Now pour the red sauce and meat on top and spread. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and spread cheese on top and return to oven for 15 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Caprese Salad with Balsamic Reduction

1 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup honey 3 large tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 (16 oz) package fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 1/4-inch slices 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Stir balsamic vinegar and honey together in a small saucepan and place over high heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer until the vinegar mixture has reduced to 1/3 cup, about 10 minutes. Set the balsamic reduction aside to cool.

Arrange alternate slices of tomato and mozzarella cheese decoratively on a serving platter. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper, spread fresh basil leaves over the salad, and drizzle with olive oil and the balsamic reduction.

Pasta Cacio e Pepe

12 ounces spaghetti 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temp 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 2/3 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until just al dente, 8 to 10 minutes.

While the pasta cooks, mash the soft butter with the olive oil and Pecorino in a large bowl to form a paste.

When the pasta is cooked, reserve ½ cup of the pasta cooking water and drain the spaghetti.

Add the spaghetti directly to the bowl with butter mixture. Toss well to coat, adding the pasta water as needed to make a thick, creamy sauce that coats the pasta. Season to taste with salt and lots of freshly ground pepper. Divide pasta among four plates; serve immediately.

Lasagna Roll Ups

1 pound ground beef 1/4 white onion, chopped 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 (26 ounce) jar chunky tomato sauce (such as Ragu®) 3 tablespoons white sugar 18 lasagna noodles 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese 1 egg, beaten 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 (12 ounce) package shredded mozzarella cheese, or as needed 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Cook and stir ground beef, onion, garlic powder, and oregano in a large skillet over medium heat until onion is tender and beef is browned, about 10 minutes. Add tomato sauce and sugar; simmer until sauce is heated through, about 10 minutes.

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.

Mix ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, and 3/4 cup Parmesan cheese together in a bowl.

Place a lasagna noodle on a work surface. Spoon one layer of ricotta cheese mixture, one layer meat sauce, and one layer mozzarella cheese atop the lasagna noodle; top with another lasagna noodle.

Roll up the stuffed lasagna noodles in the jelly-roll style; place in the prepared casserole dish. Repeat with remaining lasagna noodles, ricotta cheese mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

Spread a spoonful of meat sauce atop each lasagna roll; top with remaining mozzarella cheese and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted and bubbling, 30 to 35 minutes.

Italian Wedding Cookies

1 1/2 cups unsalted butter 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups finely ground almonds 4 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar for rolling Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

Cream butter or margarine in a bowl, gradually add confectioners’ sugar and salt. Beat until light and fluffy. Add almonds and vanilla. Blend in flour gradually and mix well.

Shape into balls (or crescents) using about 1 teaspoon for each cookie. Place on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake for 15-20 min. Do not brown. Cool slightly, then roll in the extra confectioners’ sugar.

Lemony Pork Piccata

4 pork chops 1/2 cup all-purpose flour salt and ground black pepper to taste 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons sliced shallots 1/3 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup chicken stock 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon capers Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

Pound pork chops between 2 sheets waxed paper or plastic wrap until very thin, about 1/8 inch.

Mix flour, salt, and pepper together in a shallow bowl. Dredge both sides of each pork chop through flour mixture, shaking off any excess flour.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat until butter starts to sizzle. Add shallots and pork chops in 1 layer, working in batches if needed.

Cook pork chops until golden brown and almost cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer pork chops to a baking dish and lightly tent with aluminum foil, reserving the shallots and browned bits of food in the skillet.

Bake pork chops in the preheated oven until cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 145 degrees F (63 degrees C).

Pour wine and chicken stock into the skillet and bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom with a wooden spoon.

Reduce heat and simmer until sauce is reduced by half, 2 to 5 minutes. Stir lemon juice into sauce.

1 cup butter, softened 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon garlic salt 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground paprika In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic and parmesan cheese. Season with garlic salt, Italian seasoning, pepper and paprika. Mix until smooth.
