Celebrate Truro! Commemorative Directory New Photo Dates Available by Bob Tate Did you ever hear those jokes that start out with “I’ve got some good news and some bad news, which do you want me to tell you about first?” Well, the good news is that we are putting together an updated commemorative pictorial directory which will prove to be a valuable tool for all of us as we transition to a temporary facility next year. This directory will be part of our Celebrate Truro! event of June 10, and will include a lot of great memories of our rich past (along with all of our pictures). So what could possibly be the bad news? Well, it’s like this: when we first informed the congregation about putting together this updated directory, we frankly had a fairly low turnout, significantly lower than pictorial directories of the past. We had less than 300 entries, and we typically get well over 400 entries. The manufacturer only gives us about 25 more directories to give out over the total number who had their picture taken, so if we want or need more, we will have to buy those at significant additional cost. There is absolutely no obligation to buy additional pictures from the photography studio, and your picture counts towards the grand total of copies the manufacturer will give us. So that’s one practical reason why we need your support. Additionally, when we first announced the creation of the directory, we did not then intend to make this a very special commemorative edition in conjunction with “Celebrate Truro!” But when “Celebrate Truro!” was conceived, we realized we had a golden opportunity to do something much bigger than just put together another pictorial directory. So, for those of you who already had your pictures taken, a big Thank You is in order! For those who were not able to have their pictures taken, we have managed to convince the photographers to set up one additional set of dates which will allow you to have your picture taken and to be included in this historic directory as well. Truro Anglican Church is starting a great new chapter in our history, and your participation in this directory will show the world that we are a church family that remains united in Christ’s love and are joyfully looking forward to the days ahead—our best days are yet to come! Celebrate Truro! Volunteers Needed! Decorating and preparations are underway for Celebrate Truro! on Sunday June 10 and your help is needed to make it a beautiful event. If you can jump in and assist, whether in a little or big way, it would be greatly appreciated. We have a serious hunt going on for hydrangea for the floral arrangements — any color, or size. They will need to be cut June 7, 8, and/or 9. Other opportunities include set up, take down, filling balloons with helium, making bows, covering tables and helping to serve the food. As many of you may already know, Derek and Cathy Rust and their family will be moving to Australia in June for a time of refreshment and renewal, kind of a sabbatical for the Rusts in their important ministry work. Financially they would very much appreciate some financial support to ensure they can take care of basic expenses whilst in Australia. If you would like to help out with a one-time or a recurring donation, you can send Derek a check in whatever amount you feel so led, and make the check payable to “Derek Rust”, and mail the check to Derek Rust, P. Although any support you can offer would be most appreciated, any such donation cannot be considered official donations to the Church and cannot be claimed as a tax deduction so would not be tax deductible. Truro Church cannot accept checks made payable to Truro Anglican Church with Derek Rust in the memo line, and if we receive such checks we must return them to the sender.
J2J picnic on the lawn! Help support the J2J team this summer! On the first Sunday of the month the J2J team will be selling lunches, starting June 3 (that’s today!). Bring your picnic blankets, spread them out on the lawn and share some quality time with your church family. If you can’t stay to picnic they are a great grab ‘n’ go quick lunch. Selections will vary each month.
John Howe’s Latest and The History of Truro Parish Re-released Just in Time for Celebrate Truro! Thanks to Christian book store owner, Lyn Adams, we have been made aware of two books that expand on the Celebrate Truro! theme and should be of interest to many at Truro. Anointed by the Spirit written by former rector of Truro Church, Bishop John Howe and the recently re-released A History of Truro Parish will be available for order and/or purchase at Lyn’s store, Joy Unlimited in the City of Fairfax, on Sundays in the Rector’s Forum, or at the Celebrate Truro! table outside, if the sun is shining. 3

Acolytes: Serving in Worship Today we recognize more than 40 young people who serve Truro every week as acolytes at Sunday worship services, weddings and funerals and special services during Christmas, Lent and Easter. They work behind the scenes as well as behind the rail— carrying the cross, torches and flags in the processionals and recessionals, lighting and extinguishing the candles, helping with the offering and assisting the priests during communion. Their faithful service week after week enables our congregation to enter more deeply into worship together. Truro has eight acolyte teams, four for each of the two services in the sanctuary. Each group is led by a crucifer—an experienced acolyte chosen for leadership gifts and a servant heart. Acolyte teams include two torch bearers who carry the candles and one or more altar acolytes who light and snuff the altar candles and help set the communion table. Teams rotate, serving about once a month. This year, we have nine seniors who are graduating and heading for college. So we’ll need many new acolytes to replace them. Another critical role in Truro’s acolyte program is the parent coordinator. These parents sit with the acolytes each week and assist them during communion. Their guidance and encouragement to our acolyte teams is invaluable. Our acolytes will be sitting together in the front at each service this Sunday and then celebrating with their families at a barbeque on the front lawn after the 11:15 service (or in the
Upper Room in case of rain). As you see the acolytes, please let them know how much you appreciate their service and thank them for a job well done. Thanks to Our Senior Acolytes! We especially appreciate our graduating seniors, several of whom have served for six or more years as acolytes. Each of them will be receiving a memento of their service and a prayer book with their name engraved. We are deeply grateful for your faithful service and leadership, and we’ll miss you next year. Our seniors include Madeleine Ball who will be studying pre-med at NOVA; Keegan Collins majoring in physics at the University of Notre Dame; Abigail Fleming studying elementary education at the University of Mary Washington; Jake Hess focusing on economics and political science at Marquette University; Emily Hunt majoring psychology at Christopher Newport University; Sam Merkel studying kinesthetics and biology at NOVA to become a personal trainer; Justin Niles majoring in engineering at Virginia Tech; Jake Snyder studying engineering at the University of Michigan; and Kaitlyn Wagner majoring in biology at James Madison University.
New Acolytes Welcome! Over the summer, we will be reformulating teams for next year and recruiting additional acolytes. We welcome youth from 10 up, from fifth through twelfth grades. Each fall, we hold a training session for all acolytes so that new team members understand their roles and older acolytes get a refresher or practice as they move from serving as an altar acolyte to a torchbearer to a crucifer. We will be in touch with continuing acolytes over the summer to share next year’s schedule and teams and the date for fall training. parish happenings What Makes Acolyting So Rewarding? “I believe acolyting not only allows one to glorify God,” says Justin Niles, “but it also provides a perfect example of what a veritable leader should be. Crucifers lead acolyte teams not because of personal credentials but because of personal work and commitment. Crucifers were at one time torches; torches were one time altars; and altars one time had no idea what an acolyte was.” Justin adds, “And if the humbling and God-exalting experience is not enough, you can also receive community service hours for this simple, yet fantastic job of acolyting.” An acolyte since he was 12, Jake Hess especially remembers the December 2006 service when Rector Martyn Minns announced the vote to leave the Episcopal Church. He says, “Joining acolytes was one of the best decisions I made during my middle school and high school years. I learned to have a deeper appreciation for church tradition. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving and teaching the younger acolytes along the way.” “I think more kids should be acolytes,” asserts senior Madeleine Ball. “It is a great way to meet new people and work with them to serve God. . . . Having something in common with someone is always fun; it gives a connection that breaks down the barriers for shy people looking for new friends, and outgoing people are able to have another outlet with more Christian friends that they may not have in school. God reveals himself to us through others in our Christian community, and when the community is expanded with acolyte service, you are surrounded by his image and his love.” “I love being able to serve God with my friends,” said Abigail Fleming. “I love seeing everyone come forward to receive communion. When we take communion together, I sense the strength of our community.”
Team Truro Haiti 2012 Is Booked! Team Truro Haiti Mission 2012 continues to prepare for its mission trip in the summer, August 13–20. The latest news about the mission trip is that our airfare has been purchased so we are booked and ready to fly to Haiti as soon as August 13 gets here. It’s been an exciting journey to see how our team has formed out of members from Truro Anglican and its Comunidad Hispana. Some of the team members were committed as soon as they read about this short-term mission opportunity to serve God’s Littlest Angels in Petionville, Haiti. Others came on board later on, but we have a team that is precisely what we have been praying for all along—a servant-hearted, committed, humble and joyful team. We are meeting once a month to pray and study the Book of Acts and a little but valuable resource to help us prepare as a mission team, the book Vacations with a Purpose. We want to ask your continued prayers for team members (picture above from left to right) Agustín Martínez, Shelle Ames, Lulu Cooper, Aronica Glover, Georgene Assur, the Rev. New York Philharmonic Cellist Wei Yu in Concert Benefit for Sudan Sunrise Friday, June 22 at 7:30pm The opening concert to kick-off our Genesis! Summer Arts Camp, cellist Wei Yu is a member of the New York Philharmonic cello section, and active recitalist and chamber musician. Performing with New York pianist, Keuna Lee, Wei will play a variety of works for cello and piano. A freewill offering will be taking with net proceeds to benefit Sudan Sunrise. Genesis Arts Camp Singer, actor and teacher, James Myers currently serves as our bass section leader in the Truro Parish Choir. This summer he’ll be teaching two classes for 7th-12th graders, one on Theatre Improvisation, and the other a Musical Theatre Workshop where students will learn a song and dance number to perform for the Friday night showcase: James has worked in a variety of mediums including opera, musical theatre, and film. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University and a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from George Mason University. While at GMU, he had the honor of serving as adjunct faculty teaching a group voice class. He has worked extensively in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, The Signature Theatre, Theatre of the First Amendment and The Washington Savoyards. He has also performed abroad with The Middle Saxony Opera Company in Freiberg, Germany in their productions of The Marriage of Figaro and Street Scene. Red Barn Summer Worship and Healing Services Victory Thru Jesus Ministry began its summer Saturday worship services June 2 at the Red Barn on Charles and Kathy Strother’s farm in Delaplane, Virginia. Services run 6:00 – 9:00 pm and include praise, teaching, and personal ministry. Brandon Showalter will lead worship and Stephen Burke will speak. Stephen serves as director and founder of “The Lord Will Provide.” He left his 18-year career in advertising to pursue God’s call upon his life and to share what The Lord is telling him about the coming times. Library News The latest additions to the Truro Adult Collection are the DVD, Courageous, the newest book by Bp. John Howe entitled Anointed by the Spirit, and a book donated by the Anglicans for Life ministry at Truro, Unplanned. Courageous is another great movie from the church in Georgia that produced three previous films, including Fireproof. It is about five men who discover how the Lord is leading them to be better fathers and husbands. It follows in the tradition of Promise Keepers. John Howe’s book, Anointed by the Spirit, is subtitled, A Study of the Ministry of Jesus and His Followers. The forward by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, includes this statement: “[T]here are no super spiritual Christians, only people like you and me who have learned that a powerful Christian life is Christ’s gift to us and one he longs for us to possess.” Unplanned, by Abby Johnson, was published as a collaboration between a major Protestant publisher and a Roman Catholic publisher. It is the true story of a young woman’s journey from being a college volunteer at Planned Parenthood, to becoming director of a clinic in Texas, to the revelation that she had made the wrong choice in supporting abortion “rights.” A compelling story of God’s grace, it presents both sides of the issue with insight and courage. Prayer Chain: The Intercessory Prayer Team responds to all prayer-line phone calls, prays for parishioners and visitors, and passes prayer needs along to the prayer chain.
