February 2021 Vol. 1 Issue 6

Fall in Love with the Good The month of February is better known by many as the month of “love.” It is a month marked by Valentine’s Day (2/14) - a special day whereby there is an exchange of flowers and cards in the hopes of winning, or maintaing, the affection of a loved one. It is also a day where True North participates in the giving of Virtue Grams. Virtue Grams are sold in support of True North’s girls’ 3rd / 4th-grade competitive soccer team (where a portion of the sales goes back to True North). A Virtue Gram is a way to recognize virtue in the lives of True North faculty, staff, and students. The virtues recognized are Core Virtues celebrated at True North. In addtion to the Virtue Gram card, students are given candy and inspiring messages - all wrapped up in a beautiful, transparent, lace packaging. This year, we had an overwhelming level of participation, which resulted in 100% of Virtue Grams being sold out. Due to the generosity of our Titan families, our True North 3rd / 4th-grade girls’ competitive soccer team was able to compete in two tournaments. The girls made it to the Dmitri Cup U10 Gold Division Semifinals and won the Weston Cup U10 Gold Division championships. The Weston Cup is the largest soccer tournament in the State of Florida! Congratulations girls! We are proud of you! The theme for this year’s Virtue Grams was “Falling in Love with the Good.” It offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on the meaning of these words and what each True North Titan is called to. The mission for True North has always been to instill in its students a love for truth, beauty, and goodness. But what does it mean to love the good, and how do we fall in love with it? To love the good means: 1) there is a clear recognition of an objective standard for goodness; 2) this standard resides outside the individual; 3) we can know, intellectually, this standard of goodness; and 4) we can “fall in love” with the good, and thus willfully conform our lives to it. This is a noble and worthy pursuit. Some may say... the only thing worth pursuing. At True North, it is the first and most important pursuit and brings to light all other pursuits: academic, athletic, or otherwise.

For if we fail to fall in love with the good, if we fail to conform our lives to the good, we fail at everything else. So what does the good look like? The good is embodied in the virtues celebrated in our Virtue Grams. When we recognize virtue in another, we are not saying that this or that person is the complete embodiment of a particular virtue. We are saying that this or that person has reflected - to some extent - what is understood as the objective standard of that virtue. Each time we reflect a virtue, we participate in a different aspect of goodness. The more virtues we reflect, the more we participate in goodness itself. The goodness that makes all things good. But to fall in love with the good takes a risk - a choice that must be made freely. It is a risk because if we accept the good, we must make changes in our lives in order to conform to it. It is never easy and often uncomfortable. Yet, this is the call of all our True North Titans - a call to fall in love with the good, embrace the good, and always remember to be...VIRTUOUS!

High School Art Exhibit!!

Sports and more!!

A

t True North, we are working towards getting back to “normal” - as much as possible - while still following CDC, local, and State guidelines for Covid safety. In the month of February, True North Art students hosted a retrospective art exhibit in the amphitheater. Thank you to Ms. Paula, Mrs. Alfaro and all who made this evening special for our students and their families. As seen on the adjacent page, True North art scholars beautifully captured realisitic artwork from ancient, medieval, and modern times. Our True North soccer teams soared with our competitive 3rd / 4th-grade girls soccer team winning the Weston Cup U10 Gold Division championship game and our boys soccer team who shut out AIE Charter with a 5-0 victory. Below is Elizabeth “Betty” Gerber who did an excellent job as Headmaster of the Day at our Dadeland Campus and our MS art scholars thanking the Women’s Club for their amazing donations to our art program.

2nd-Grade Hamster Adoption!

T

rue North 2nd-grade classes, Ms. Roca and Ms. Dominguez, each adopted a baby dwarf hamster as a class pet. The students were beyond excited to pick out their baby hamster. All 10 baby hamsters have been adopted by True North staff and / or families. All that’s needed - food, water, a place to sleep, play, and exercise, and a lot of LOVE!
