LAIKA & THE COSMONAUTS

Surf-revivalists and Finland’s Numero Uno instrumental rock combo serves up a heaping portion of original spy-surf-instro tunes combined with ultra-cool covers.

Lead guitarist Mikko Lankinen’s playing would give some of the top guitarists today a run for their money. Not only is his playing fast, but also passionate and melodious. Complemented by the second guitar and the farfisa organ (Matti Pitsinki) that introduces an intriguing dissonance, they not only play great surf, but also make it somewhat experimental. You’ll never see anyone so efficiently use a tremolo. The drumming (Janne Haavisto) and the bass work (Tom Nyman) are very tight and mesh well with Lankinen’s wizardry.

The group issued its debut album C´Mon Do the Laika! in 1988; Surf’s You Right! followed two years later, and in 1993 Laika & the Cosmonauts resurfaced with Instruments of Terror. Subsequent efforts include 1995’s Amazing Colossal Band and 1997’s Absurdistan. Laika Sex Machine followed in early 2001.
