Auroraprisen deles ut av Tromsø Internasjonale Filmfestival i samarbeid med Norsk Filminstitutt. Prisen er på 100.000 norske kroner (12.300 EUR) og skal sikre at prisvinneren får ordinær kinodistribusjon i Norge. 75.000 (9.200 EUR) går til den distributør i Norge som kjøper filmen og 25.000 (3.000 EUR) går til filmens regissør som et stipend. Aurorastatuetten går til filmens regissør.

Aurora er personifikasjonen av morgenrøden. I følge gresk og romersk mytologi er hun datteren til titanen Hyperion, søsteren til solguden Helios og månegudinnen Selene. Hun er mor til kveldsstjernen Hesperus.

Aurora er et lyspunkt, og hun har da også fått nordlyset oppkalt etter seg: Aurora Borealis.

Tromsø Internasjonale Filmfestival arrangeres på tampen av mørketida, mens det ennå er fullt mulig å observere det fascinerende nordlyset. Festivalen avsluttes 21. januar, den offisielle soldagen i Tromsø, når ildkulen for første gang er synlig på himmelen igjen etter at den forsvant i november.

Auroraprisens jury utpekes av Norsk Filminstitutt. Juryen skal bedømme alle filmene i konkurranseprogrammet samt et utvalg filmer fra Horisonter og Kritikerserien.

The Aurora Award is presented by the Tromsø International Film Festival and the Norwegian Film Institute. The award of NOK 100,000 (EUR 12,300) is intended to secure a Norwegian distributor for the film. NOK 75,000 (EUR 9,200) goes to the Norwegian distributor that buys the film, while NOK 25,000 (EUR 3,000) goes to the film’ s director as a scholarship. The Aurora statuette is presented to the director of the film.

Aurora is the personification of the morning light. According to Greek and Roman mythology, she is the daughter of the titan Hyperion, sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene. She is the mother of the evening star Hesperus.

The northern lights have been named after her: Aurora Borealis.

The Tromsø International Film Festival takes place at the end of the dark season, but the fascinating northern lights can still be observed. The last day of the festival is the official sun day in Tromsø, when that fireball becomes visible again after two months’ absence.

The Aurora jury is selected by the Norwegian Film Institute. The jury evaluates all the films in the Competition Programme, as well as a selection from Horizons and the Critics Programme.
