USSA Superyacht Summit By Dorie Cox

Innovative solutions are always hot topics in an industry as inherently global and mobile as yachting. At the U.S. Superyacht Association’s Superyacht Summit “The Great Rethink of the Superyacht Industry,” panelists brought ideas. Speakers on Tuesday in West Palm Beach included a yacht owner, a captain, the head of a marina, a boatbuilder and an innovator. Vital to yachting are the buyers, pointed out Michael Weiss, owner of M/Y Lady M. “This industry doesn’t exist without us,” he said, “but we have no parts, no moorings, and fuel is through the roof.” With slips more scarce, Weiss ensures space for his future yachts by buying into dockage with residents who currently own the properties. His focus on boaters who are aging out of yachting also helps them decrease their burden of yacht owner-

ship. “Now I own several slips and when they are older and out of yachting, that is ours,” Weiss said. Capt. Charles DuGas-Standish proposed a solution to the challenge of finding qualified and available crew. He often has to hire crew who “will get us through,” but who are not qualified, he said. DuGas-Standish recommends that the government modify the Jones Act, a federal law that puts yachts under the same regulations as commercial cargo vessels. “We’re talking about a yacht, not a grain, coal, or oil carrier,” the captain said. If yachts were given a different designation, regulations could more closely meet yachting needs, including opening employment to international workers. “Then, if I’m short on American crew, I CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Panelists at the Superyacht Summit were, from left, Andrew Grant Super, founder of Berkeley Rand; Sam Chavers, senior vice president of Suntex Marinas; Michael Weiss, owner of M/Y Lady M; Capt. Charles DuGas-Standish; and Daryl Wakefield, president of Westport Yachts. Diane Byrne, founder and editor of Megayacht News, was moderator.

could allow foreign crew,” he said. Sam Chavers, senior vice president of Suntex Marinas, said marina demand is skewed, and many yachts await parts and service, which backs up others coming in. And larger yachts can’t find appropriate dockage. “We have incredible waiting lists with no future dates,” he said. In an effort to meet these needs, Suntex has acquired several marinas recently to bring a standard level of service, talent, benefits, amenities, and training, he said. But challenges continue as “boats are wider, longer, and more amenityand power-driven,” Chavers said. Daryl Wakefield, president of Westport Yachts, said there was a built-in cushion for manufacturing delays, but supply chain issues have kicked in. “That’s out the window — our three week buffer is gone,” he said. “We used to say exactly how much a yacht would cost and what day it would deliver. I can’t do that today.” There’s a 30% increase with yacht costs, and it’s rising, he said. In response, the company is buying more materials in advance with the help of the customer,

the future yacht owner. And for really forward thinking, Andrew Grant Super, founder of Berkeley Rand design and engineering house, offers destination trips — with no physical yacht. For him, yachting is now “more Disneyland and Star Wars.” Super, who is also founder of Deer Hague Funding, a company that executes metaverse-driven initiatives such as NFTs and blockchain, creates experiential superyacht expeditions using immersive technologies and artificial intelligence. “We create themes for owners of fashion, astronomy, or war,” he said. For example, they see in real time and relive the historical Battle of the Bulge through a variety of technologies. His recommendation for the yacht industry is to adopt technology at every level. An example included how the manufacturing industry could use immersive technology to “go onboard the yacht and sign off on” aspects of the build more efficiently. “I’m shocked how little adaption there is,” Super said. “The industry could change the conversation by 50% overnight.”

The East Coast ICW is the Superyacht Superhighway The glorious and much celebrated Atlantic ICW has become a veritable superhighway for superyachts – and for good reason. Taking boaters on a magnificent journey from Canada, down to the Florida Keys, the ICW is how boaters chase, and catch, perfect boating weather all year long. An added benefit is that boats can travel this protected waterway up and down the East Coast in safety and comfort – completely avoiding the rough seas of the open Atlantic Ocean. Plus, the ICW offers spectacular scenery and wildlife, and endless opportunities for adventure, visiting wellknown, and not so well-known, ports of call.

As boaters thread the ICW, there are select marinas that not only accommodate superyachts, but also have an impressive reputation perpetuated by satisfied yacht owners.
