HISTORY OF JOHNSON CITY

When Lyndon B. Johnson’s Grandfather, Sam Ealy Johnson, Sr., gave up his cattle-driving business (driving cattle up the Chisholm Trail had become unprofitable), he and his brother, Tom Johnson, sold out their interests to a nephew, James Polk Johnson. How Johnson City Got Its Name The nearest post office, mill, and general store were located 14 miles south in Blanco / Pittsburg. There were still renegade Indians roaming the area, so travel over any distance was viewed with great apprehension. For that reason, settlers in the north end of Blanco County began to plan for a city in the northern area. In 1879, a barbecue was held at the springs on Town Creek located on the Johnson Ranch. At this meeting three sites for a town were offered, and the one accepted by vote of the settlers was a 320-acre plot of land on the Pedernales River offered by James Polk Johnson. After the decision, his many friends took him up on their shoulders and cheered both his victory and the decision by the residents to name the new town after him. James Polk Johnson successfully made the transition from rancher to businessman. It was his organizational ability that converted a natural way-station to a settled community and a county seat. James Polk’s Grist Mill was a steam-powered cotton gin and grist mill on Town Creek. Principal crops in this area were corn and cotton. In the ear ly 1940’s, the gin was purchased by George Crofts and converted to a milling and grain operation, which flourished until the late 1970’s.

The First Buildings By the time of his premature death at age 40 in 1885, James Polk had built the first grist mill, the Pearl Hotel and had under construction a building that was to be a general merchandise store (now the Johnson City Bank). This building came to have the first jail in its basement, and served as the first Johnson City courthouse. The first church congregation (Methodist) met in an upstairs room of this building until their church building was constructed, and later Lyndon B. Johnson had his local offices in this building constructed by his second cousin.

The Johnson Ranch on Town Creek, set at an old crossroads, was the site of present day Johnson City. The north-south route from Blanco to the Colorado River was known as early as Spanish times. Bernardo de Miranda y Flores passed this way in 1579 crossing the Peder nales in the vicinity of Johnson City on his way to inspect the supposed silver deposits near Llano. McCarty Spring, just four miles to the northwest of town, was a favored way station for travelers between Austin and Fredericksburg. Andrew Jackson Johnson, an older brother to Tom and Sam Johnson, located his home near this spring in 1858 or 1859. None of the early sites grew into a lasting settlement other than as ranch stations.

Built in 1910, the Junction School served children of rural Gillespie County for 37 years. Students walked to school to learn the “3Rs”—reading, writing, and arithmetic—in a sparsely-decorated room heated by a wood stove and illuminated by kerosene lamps. In 1912, four-year-old Lyndon Johnson began his education in this building. Kate Deadrich taught 30 students ranging from preschool to eighth grade. The future president, youngest student in the school, often sat on Miss Kate’s lap for reading Inspiredlessons. by his brief time in this simple schoolhouse, Lyndon Johnson championed the cause of public education throughout his life. The Johnson Administration saw the passage of over 60 education bills, more education legislation than in any other presidential administration.

“The much-anticipated Texas counterpart to Temecula’s South Coast Winery Resort & Spa and Carter Estate Winery and Resort – which have emerged as among Southern California’s top wineries – the opening of Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa significantly expands the company’s Texas profile,” stated Jeff Carter, president of Carter Hospitality Group. Garnering numerous awards, Carter Creek Winery elevates the Texas winery experience to Napa levels and beyond. The varietals here are especially unique due to a combination of an extremely warm growing season and an early harvest, resulting in softer and more earth driven wines. Highlights include crisp whites such as a blend of gewurztraminer, riesling and muscat canelli for the winery’s gloriosa and robust reds such as a Rhone-style blend of syrah, mourvedre, cinsault, counoise and viognier for the winery’s popular Maverick. The Sparkling Peach is also a favorite and early award winner. A combination of old and new school wine making techniques merge with sun, fertile soil and an idyllic climate to masterfully create some of the nation’s most respected varietals at Carter Creek Winery. With 40 years of wine producing experience, winemaker Jon McPherson is a lifetime oenophile and master winemaker overseeing the production of the broad portfolio of over 50 wines produced at the three family-owned Carter wineries. He was raised in the Texas viticulture industry under the tutelage of his father, Dr. Clinton “Doc” McPherson, a founder and pioneer of modern Texas wine production. While Jon McPherson now resides in Temecula, California, he has returned to his Texas roots to create classic style wines for Carter Creek. A student of old-world winemaking, McPherson focuses on “letting the vineyards speak,” leaning into European varietals.

hill country destination Carter Creek Resort & Spa is nestled within 37 private acres of expansive vineyards in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. The owner & management company, Carter Hospitality Group, LLC, is a family-owned hospitality company with five hotels and resorts, including three wineries across the United States. Carter Hospitality founded the Carter Creek location in 2016, and has been creating award-winning vintages there ever since.

But what makes Carter Creek unique from any other winery in Texas is one detail not yet mentioned and impossible to overlook – they also run an onsite microbrewery and restaurant!

Serving lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, wines from Carter Creek Winery are also available in the brewery and restaurant. On Friday and Saturday nights, patrons can enjoy listening to live music as it’s featured on the stage across the main room from the brewery and bar with fresh beer on tap.

“We don’t just have one beer – we don’t just make Belgian beer or just make IPAs – we like a good, broad selection of beer,” the General Manager added.

Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa is located at 4064 West US Highway 290 in Johnson City, and you can visit them online at www.cartercreek.com.

“In addition to that, we do a lot of collaborations,” said Matt. “For instance, we partner with Garrison Brothers Bourbon, the oldest bourbon distillery in Texas. Sometimes when they juice their barrels, they’ll give us a call. We pick up those barrels and put a brown ale into them to infuse the flavors.”

While offering authentic Texan hospitality and a premiere winery inspired by a founding family of Texas Wine Country, Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa also features two tasting rooms and wine club, a smokehouse, 78 luxurious villas, a pool and hot tub, 24-hour fitness center, corporate event space, multiple wedding venue options and an outdoor event center featuring local & traveling musical acts.

“Mr. Carter had never made beer before,” Matt stated. “Coming out here to Texas, he really wanted to do craft brewing. So he hired Justin Zimmerman as our Brew Master. Justin is a bit of a mad scientist. He makes the beer true to the environment it comes from. So if he’s making a Munich style beer, he’ll get Munich style yeast, and he’ll change the water chemistry to be somewhat of that in Munich. He’s very particular. So when the beer comes out, it’s true to the region it originated.”

Matt continued, “Justin really challenges himself. He wants to make the best beer. I’d say that’s one thing our founder Jim Carter, winemaker John McPherson and brew master Justin Zimmerman all have in common: they want to be the best at what they do. We already have such an awardwinning winemaker, and this is the first year we’ll be entering our beer into competitions. We’re excited to soon be well-known for our award-winning beers, in addition to our already award-winning wines.”

Zimmerman creates tasty small-batch light ales such as pilsners and blondes, medium-bodied pale ales, brown ales and porters and stouts featuring local fruits that pair well with hearty and bold cuisine, emphasizing locally sourced ingredients.

Named after the original highway connecting Fredericksburg and Johnson City, Old 290 Brewery’s namesake is just one way owner Jim Carter chose to pay homage to simpler times. “Mr. Carter harbors a lot of nostalgia from traveling through the country,” reported Matt Kleefisch, General Manager of Carter Creek. “Some of his favorite memories were made in old red leather restaurant booths. So he wanted to incorporate booths just like that into the brewery – that’s the feeling he wants to create when walking in.”

We knew Johnson City is where we wanted to be.” With a tried-and-true menu, Fat Boy Burgers is a whole lot more than just premium burgers and fries. “We’ve come up with new items over the years,” added Rayette. “We have barbecue, fajitas, and also food truck and catering services for wineries, weddings and special events. Then, of course, there is the Friday Fish Special. It’s homemade, hand-battered fish and shrimp, coleslaw, beans, and tartar sauce. It’s a recipe that originated with my mom and dad. Of course, we’ve added our own touches, too.” Giving back to the community the Bibles call home is fundamental to the family. They’re quick to step in when needed and lend a helping hand.

FAT BOY BURGERS Giving back to the community they love is vital to owners Ray and Rayette Bible.

“We give back to Johnson City with not only funds, but also our time,” said Rayette. “Ray is president of the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department. It’s very close to his heart. He’ll get a fire call when he’s working at the restaurant and he just looks back saying, ‘I have to go!’ I’m proud to be a part of Lights Spectacular. It benefits our community and offers enjoyment for our visitors that return year after year.

“Giving back is what is important to us both. At Fat Boy, our true love is to feed our community and those that come to the Hill Country to visit us.”

The best place in Texas to view Mother Nature’s most beautiful floral displays. Every spring the Texas Hill Country comes alive with fields of color. Miles of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, winecups, daisies, pink evening primroses, and prairie verbena create a glorious drive and captivating photos. Visitors will want to plan ahead and early in the year. If there is a milder winter, the wildflowers might start blooming even before March. If Johnson City gets ample fall and winter rains and has warmer than usual weather in February, you might start to see Texas mountain laurel popping out at the end of February. For more information, contact the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce at 830-868-7684 or visit their website at www.johnsoncitytexas.info. Where flowers bloom, so does hope.
