Come out and discover Bellville ... you’ll be glad you did!

The Bellville Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome you to visit our quaint Texas town with a big Texas heart! We are centrally located and ideal for a quick getaway where you can leave the city behind. Nestled in between Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Bryan/College Station, Bellville is only a few hours away.

Bellville is rich in history and recently celebrated its 175th year in 2023. Bellville is the county seat of Austin County and was named for Thomas B. Bell, one of Stephen F. Austin’s Old Three Hundred that came in 1822.

There are so many things to do in Bellville between the wonderful eateries, coffee houses, and pubs you can stroll and shop downtown. Walking distance from the square is the Austin County Jail Museum and the Phenix Knives blacksmith shop that was originally started in 1891. Bellville is also home to a castle built by one of our very own, called Newman’s Castle.

On the first Saturday of the month you can find the town abuzz with not one market but two! There is a Market on the square that has many vendors selling wares from woodworking, clothes, candles, artwork, crochet works, and many other unique items. We also have one of the largest Farmers markets full of handmade and homegrown items. You’ll discover fresh produce, soap, canned goods, fresh eggs, plants and handmade items not to be found elsewhere.

There are multiple annual events to come check out like our Chocolate Walk in February, Car Show in March, Texas Select and German Fest in April, County Fair in October and Small Town Christmas in December. Don’t put off your visit, as a matter of fact, plan on coming back again and again! It’s really hard not to fall in love with this town! #DiscoverBellville

BELLVILLE, TEXAS: A

Charming Small Town with Deep Roots

Nestled in the heart of Austin County, Bellville, Texas, offers visitors a warm welcome and a rich sense of history. Founded in the 1840s and named for early settlers Thomas and James Bell, this picturesque town blends frontier legacy with German heritage, making it a perfect getaway for travelers seeking both charm and authenticity.

Bellville became the county seat in 1848 after the Bell brothers donated land to help centralize the local government. That move sparked a transformation from scattered rural homesteads into a true town center, attracting farmers, tradespeople and entrepreneurs eager to build a new life in the Republic-turnedstate of Texas.

The 1850s and 1860s were formative decades for Bellville. As German immigrants settled in the region, they brought with them traditions of craftsmanship, music, food, and communal values that still echo through the town today. Early businesses included blacksmith shops, dry goods stores, and gristmills—many operated by families whose descendants still live in the area.

During the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, Bellville endured the same hardships seen across the South, but by the late 19th century, the town experienced renewed prosperity. The arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in the 1880s turned Bellville into a key shipping point for cotton and livestock. The economic boom of this period led to the construction of many of the grand homes and commercial buildings that visitors can still admire today.

The early 20th century brought electricity, automobiles, and new schools to Bellville, modernizing the town while still preserving its historic charm. World War I and the Great Depression brought challenges, but the community endured, leaning on its strong agricultural base and close-knit population.

Visitors today can catch glimpses of the past throughout town— from preserved Victorian-era homes to the 1896 Bellville Turnverein Pavilion, once a hub for German social clubs and dances. The Austin County Jail Museum, housed in a building constructed in 1896, offers exhibits on everything from frontier justice to local legends.

Bellville also hosts several beloved events each year, including the Austin County Fair and the festive Small Town Christmas, both of which celebrate the town’s community spirit and long-standing traditions. Seasonal festivals often feature local crafts, music, and food—many rooted in the town’s European and Texan heritage.

With its blend of history, hospitality and small-town charm, Bellville is more than just a stop on the map—it’s a destination where the past is preserved and celebrated, and visitors are always welcome.

Welcome to the BISD Learning Center

2 E. MAIN STREET. BELLVILLE. TEXAS. 77418

Welcome to the BISD Learning Center, home of Brahmas on the Square. The BISD Learning Center is a unique space located in the heart of our Bellville Community and exemplifies the connectedness between the district and the community.

The mission of Bellville ISD is to partner with students, staff, parents and community to cultivate relevant learning experiences so that each individual is empowered by their unique gifts and strengths.

To realize this mission, the school district created the BISD Learning Center to provide opportunities for our learners to apply their skills in a real-world way that positively contributes to the local community. BISD also aimed to create a space for community to gather, adding to the charm and attraction of our downtown square.

The building was originally built in 1909 as Austin County State Bank. Bellville ISD purchased the property in 2021. The facility houses the Bellville Community Museum which was designed to preserve the historic components of the building including the original vault door in addition to photos and artifacts showcasing the community’s unique history and economic development overtime. The museum features a timeline of significant moments in the community’s history and murals crafted by a Bellville High School student.

The BISD Learning Center is also home to multiple career-based academic pathways serving students in grades 6-12 from Bellville Junior High School and Bellville High School. Pathways offered at the BISD Learning Center include culinary arts, digital design, digital communications, and health science.

At the BISD Learning Center, students in grades 6-12 also operate “Brahmas on the Square” which includes a student-run cafe and student-run store. Students from multiple programs including horticulture, floral design, construction, welding, art, digital design, culinary arts, and entrepreneurship come together to create products featured through the building and sold through the cafe and store.

Bellville ISD students lead efforts to participate in community-wide events such as Market-Days, Chocolate Walks, and Small Town Christmas hosted on the Bellville square. Bellville is an incredible community with an abundance of character and charm. “The Bellville Way” is one reflective of family, trust, and high expectations. BISD is proud to contribute to the continuation of traditions that make Bellville a special place to live, learn, work, and play.

Residents and frequenters of Bellville will often see the celebration of Bellville students’ accomplishments through the signs on the courthouse lawn and may be lucky enough to take part in BISD buses circling the square to send students’ off to regional, state, and national competitions.

Bellville ISD is proud to invite guests to the BISD Learning Center to explore the art gallery showcasing students’ creations, spend time exploring artifacts from the community’s unique history and learn little known facts such as BISD’s origins as the first public school district in Texas for unincorporated towns and cities, original publications from the Bellville Times (one of the six longest standing newspapers in the state), and rumors of how the railway sparked one of the most well-known community rivalries in Texas.

HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART IS - NATALIE JONES ON COMING HOME TO BELLVILLE

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” When asked this familiar question, a child typically replies quickly and confidently, only to change the answer multiple times throughout childhood. Natalie Jones, however, is the exception. From a young age Natalie wanted to be a teacher, and she followed that passion to complete fruition.

Today, as Assistant Superintendent of Academics for Bellville schools, Natalie Jones is exactly where she wants to be, doing what she loves. “Teaching was the only thing I ever really wanted to do,” Natalie professed. “It’s my passion; it’s in my heart.” Laughing, Natalie remembered, “my Dad always said he knew I was destined to be a teacher because I would line up all my stuffed animals and teach them.” One of her favorite gifts in childhood was a chalkboard that Natalie used in her “classroom” of toy students.

Raised in Bellville and a graduate of Bellville High School, Natalie is also passionate about her hometown. “This community was exceptional to me growing up,” Natalie beamed. “The community support here has always been incredible.” Natalie is a proud product of the Bellville community and is happy to return the favor by supporting and educating current and future students. “I think the most special part of being back in Bellville is that opportunity to give back to the community,” Natalie affirmed, and added, “It’s been a great place to raise my kids, too; they were also fortunate to benefit from this wonderful community.”

Above, Natalie Jones stands in front of the main counter at Brahmas on the Square.

“Natalie was a significant player on the team that created and launched the Bellville ISD Learning Center, which opened to students in Spring 2023. Natalie credits the BISD school board and superintendent with the vision and enthusiasm to make this worthwhile project more than a reality – a huge success. The three-person administrative team, both behind the scenes and on site, includes Natalie, Emily Barrera (Director of Teaching and Learning) and Matthew Mahlmann (Director of Future Readiness). To explain the original vision, Natalie stated, “we really wanted to create relevant learning opportunities. We want to ensure that our students are future ready … while also learning how to serve others and give back to the community.”

Affectionately called “Brahmas on the Square,” the BISD Learning Center serves not only high school and junior high students, but also the community and local businesses through hands-on, real-life learning opportunities. Here are some examples. The entrepreneurship program teaches business skills, and the students operate a store inside Brahmas on the Square where they buy student-made products and sell them to the public. In culinary arts, students learn more than cooking skills; they run a café where the food they prepare is sold to outside customers at lunchtime. And the audio/ visual arts students film podcasts and videos through BISD’s Brahma Video Productions.

Additionally, Natalie shared, “BISD partnered with the Bellville Historical Society to create a museum featuring artifacts from Bellville’s rich history, along with rotating exhibits from the BISD school museum. Student artwork is displayed in the space, and an art gallery showcases students’ artwork throughout the year.”

Continued on page 14.

Teaching was the only thing I ever really wanted to do. It’s my passion; it’s in my heart.

From top, students in the culinary arts program make chocolate chip cookies to sell in the Brahma Café; health science students check the vitals on a medical manikin.

Equipping students with real-life skills is of particular interest to Natalie, because she recognizes how such skills and experiences will benefit their future careers and lives in general. “Soft skills, like communication and eye contact and problem-solving are so important for our students to learn,” Natalie began, “and it’s difficult to learn those in a traditional classroom setting.” BISD Learning Center takes those classroom skills a step further and puts them into action.

There is no doubt that Natalie’s passions for education and her hometown are an essential benefit to Bellville schools and the entire community.

If you would like to meet Assistant Superintendent Natalie Jones or tour the BISD Learning Center, stop by Brahmas on the Square at 2 East Main Street in downtown Bellville, or you can follow them online at bellvilleisd.org.

The Gathery Café

FROM DREAM TO DESTINATION: BELLVILLE COUPLE TRANSFORMS

HISTORIC SPACE INTO A BELOVED CAFÉ, BOUTIQUE, AND COMMUNITY HUB

In the heart of Bellville, across from the Austin County Courthouse, one can find The Gathery Cafe, a place where old meets new. The simple facade of the historic structure belies the unique ambience and inviting atmosphere found inside. It is upon entering the doors of the eatery that an instant transformation of the senses occurs.

The aroma of fresh-brewed coffee fills the air. The eye is drawn immediately to the counter brimming with a display of baked goods, all made in-house. Smiling baristas move here and there, greeting customers and taking orders. Off to the right sits a table of artisanal handcrafted goods, many locally made in Texas. Subtle tunes play in the background. The décor is eclectic and varied.

Simultaneously lively and peaceful, it is no surprise The Gathery is living up to its name. It has become a popular place for locals and travelers alike.

“I had always had a dream of having a coffee shop and boutique,” explained owner and cofounder Donna Balin, who runs the cafe with her husband, Scott. A self-proclaimed foodie, she went on, “We love to travel, we love coffee, wine and food. We love to serve and entertain.” It was with their combined love, shared passion and determination that the Balins opened the doors of The Gathery Cafe in 2022.

The ideal location presented itself when the couple’s realtor mentioned there was a cafe for sale. “It seemed like a great opportunity and I told my husband it was now or never.” The couple made the move from Katy to Bellville during the pandemic and “jumped in with no experience,” recalled Balin.

Continued on page 18.

From top, Donna Balin, proprietor of The Gathery Cafe pictured at the bar in the 1890 Room. The room boasts eclectic decor with a sophisticated, yet relaxed atmosphere; Jenna shows off the carrot cake. It is one of the more popular desserts among customers.

Personalizing the location, the husbandand-wife team have added their creative touches to the historic 1885 building while utilizing some of the original features such as the hardwood floor. “I love to mix new and old,” explained Balin. One of the most noticeable features is the exposed brick above the bar in the shape of Texas — a piece that was done by her husband. In addition, Balin’s faith-based motivation can be seen here and there in the cafe with inspirational phrases and quotes tucked in with the vintage décor. “Perfectly imperfect” is the slogan of The Gathery. “It is a reminder that Jesus loves us perfectly in our imperfection,” said Balin.

What started off as a simple coffee shop with pastries and baked goods has evolved over the years to include breakfast, lunch and dinner. The evolution has been one of gradual expansion. “I knew not to bite off more than I could chew,” Balin remarked. As the popularity of The Gathery grew, so did the menu and the boutique. The

menu currently offers casual options such as sandwiches and sides, to more upscale choices, ranging from steak to salmon. The boutique boasts clothing items and accessories with a selection of hats, boots, jewelry and belts. The gourmet market has a selection of wines, custom charcuterie boards, herbs and various spices.

All the uniqueness that is The Gathery has culminated into success. The reception from the community has been extremely positive. “Bellville has been good to us,” shared Balin. She noted future plans for The Gathery include hosting more events, afternoon teas and entertainment events in the 1890 Room. Past events have included painting classes, mahjong, live music, meet and greets, and watch parties. For information on upcoming events, visit their website at thegathery.cafe.

CAROL DAVIS SHARES HER TEXAS ROOTS WITH ALL WHO SEEK AN AUTHENTIC COUNTRY ESCAPE

What started out as one woman’s desire to return to her humble country roots has blossomed into an immersive and authentic Texan ranch experience for others.

A little over an hour west from the hustle and bustle of Houston sits the small unincorporated community of Cat Spring. It was there 25 years ago that Carol Davis found her “little spot” consisting of 350 acres. It wasn’t long after her purchase Davis had a vision of sharing the beautiful location with others.

“I wanted to share what I had with people from the city so they could get out and rest and relax and be in the countryside and experience nature and animals,” explained Davis. It was that idea that would lead to the founding of BlissWood Bed and Breakfast Ranch.

“I grew up on a ranch in Texas and went to Houston to make a living as a court reporter, but the bright lights dimmed and I wanted to get back to the country, so I bought the ranch.”

Surrounded by wildflowers and woodlands, the ranch encapsulates the beauty of nature and is an ideal country getaway. Davis stated, “BlissWood is couple oriented, family oriented and spread out so everyone has their own privacy.” Guests can partake in a variety of activities including horseback riding, hiking and fishing.

Above, for a woodsy glamping experience, guests can stay in this stylish Conestoga wagon.

I wanted to get back to nature and animals. “

The ranch advertises to provide guests with an “authentic Texan ranch experience”, one seemingly sought worldwide. In 2018, the German version of The Bachelor, “Der Bachelor,” was filmed at BlissWood over a span of ten days. It was a proud moment for Davis, who recalls teaching the star of the show how to ride a horse. The German language was not a barrier, as Davis, a fifth generation Texan, is of German descent. Growing up in Warda on the family farm, her first language was German. “I spoke German before I spoke English. I grew up in the country in Fayette County. When we were getting ready to go to school they started teaching us English.” Musing on her upbringing Davis added, “I thought everyone spoke two languages.”

Reflecting on her time growing up on the farm Davis recalls how the bright lights of the city beckoned her away from the tiresome manual labor of the farm. “It was nice and exciting until it wasn’t. I wanted to get back to nature and animals.” Davis, who had been working in the city full-time, began looking for land. “I had to find something close enough to Houston so I could commute.”

After a year and a half of searching, Davis found her ideal spot and from there her dream blossomed. Seemingly one idea has led to another. In 2010, she began fostering border collies for All Border Collie Rescue which then led her to founding Fosters of BlissWood. Currently there are 10 rescue dogs at the ranch. “At one time my top number was 48.” Davis went on “Border Collies are special dogs. They need a lot of mental and physical stimulation.” Guests have the option of spending one on one time with a rescue pup during their visit.

Over the years, BlissWood has received numerous accolades and positive reviews with some guests referring to it “as a little slice of heaven.” It has been the filming location of several music videos, films and a venue for countless weddings. Due to the popularity of the ranch, Davis’ plans for the future of BlissWood include adding more cottages. “I love creating and visualizing and making dreams come true and adding little cabins as I need to and expanding to have more guests who can enjoy this.”

CUT ABOVE - cont. from page 25

The Boones had been wanting to start a business together and the idea had been right in front of them - they were just too close to see it until it (literally) became bigger than they were.

They said yes to every commission that came their way, even when they didn’t immediately know how to accomplish it. And they prevailed every time - even when the size of the project was a squeeze in their (then) one car garage shop. A favorite from this time period was doing a large menu board for Huff Brewing Company, who have become fine friends and business mentors - with a few more years under their belt.

“This thing took up the whole garage,” Keith said. “But we figured it out, and it’s beautiful.”

rhythm, found their way, through trial and error, to a line of products that work and that allow for a zero-waste operation. Nothing goes unused - not even sawdust. Using the smallest scrap pieces was the genesis of Corrie’s jewelry line, as well as their mosaic wall art and end grain cutting boards. With the price of hardwood going up, it is a point of pride and smart business acumen to be so creative with their material use.

Opening a storefront wasn’t on their bingo card for the next couple years but despite reservations and resistance, they cleared every set of hurdles.

“Everything just fell into place to make this work for us,” Corrie said. “We kind of took that leap of faith, and it has been amazing. We said ‘Okay, God, we hear you. We’ll do this.’ So, we kind of took that leap of faith and it has been amazing.”

Clockwize, from left, the mysterious looking glyphs on the walls are indelible marks of Bellville’s history as a ranching community; the beautiful weathered cedar structure stands out on Main Street; Keith displays one of his beautiful and durable end grain cutting boards.

The Boones plan to host workshops for community learning, starting with birdhouses and toolboxes for children and mosaic wall art for adults. Keith, whose love of craft was reignited in the classroom, is excited about getting kiddos interested in craft early on. They’re thinking of birdhouses or toolboxes to start. Corrie mentioned mosaic wall art for the adults.

Bringing the community together in their new space feels right. After all, the grateful couple gives a lot of credit to the good people of Bellville.

“We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the people who helped us, gave us advice and spoke up for us when we weren’t in the room,” Corrie said.

As Serenity Retreat approaches a milestone 25 years in service, Carrie Bonk, retreat director, told the story of how she came to be part of this healing ministry. Carrie, originally a pharmacist, was called to ministry in the early 2000s. She and her husband, Dan, were living in Wisconsin, and it was there that she planted her first church. Over the course of the next 20 years, she followed her calling across multiple state lines, built a family with Dan, and landed in Texas - on the staff at Oak Hills in San Antonio.

In late 2020, Dan had the opportunity to take a position as hospital administrator in Bellville.

Carrie thought, “God, you’re moving me to a small town, and my husband and I have lived in large cities most of our 31 years of marriage. But we’re both from small towns, so it felt like this was a full circle moment.”

Dan moved before her so she could give notice at her church. She felt moved to a period of rest, to be still and listen for what would be next in her journey - and in stillness, the answer came.

Within the first week of Carrie being in Bellville, Dan was asked to speak to a women’s group at a local church. Carrie attended with him. She introduced herself as a minister, not knowing the seeds she was planting. Carrie had loved being a leader at Oak Hills, but she did not need to sit for long without hearing her purpose.

God always goes ahead of you, and he always prepares you.

She said, “When God released me, he said, ‘I want you to go get prayer ministry training’ in the very same sentence.” She had the desire in her heart to learn about this healing work but had not had the bandwidth to pursue it.

It was providential. COVID-19 was still disrupting normal operations, Carrie was between positions, and she was able to get training one-on-one from the executive director of a prayer ministry in San Antonio. Here is where the path opened into a clearing. A woman from the group Dan had spoken to three months earlier emailed Carrie, asking her to look into Serenity Retreat with a potential job position in mind.

“I saw that Serenity Retreat had prayer ministry training, and that was my first light bulb moment,” Carrie recalled.

After much prayer and continued training over the next few

pandemic months, she was offered the position.

It was a big step for Carrie and Dan. They would be living in a 900-square-foot space on site, providing 24-hour visitor support five days a week, and managing the entire property.

“But,” she said, “God always goes ahead of you, and he always prepares you.”

They had already downsized from a house to an apartment two years prior to be missionaries with the nonprofit Apartment Life, and agreed that this was where they were meant to minister together next.

A HEALING MINISTRY

from page 31

“Here I am living on 26 acres of holy ground that is absolutely God’s healing place for his children,” she said.

Started 25 years ago, the retreat has grown to include nine buildings that can house up to 24 overnight guests, or 30 for a day retreat. Visitors experience transformation through silent meditation, prayer sessions, or can train to be a prayer minister.

Transformation Prayer Ministry is a process developed by pastor and counselor Dr. Ed Smith. It allows an individual to uncover the beliefs underpinning emotional wounds, invite God’s perspective, and work toward lasting peace. It has transformed Carrie and her whole family.

“We’re all going to be praying with people and helping others to encounter God in a different way than they may have before. It is such a privilege to pray with others, and I will never take that for granted,” she said.

Serenity Retreat is located at 953 Memory Lane and online at serenityretreat.com.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Bellville’s SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS is a cherished annual celebration, held the first weekend in December, that brings festive cheer to the heart of Bellville. In 2025, the community will celebrate its 43rd year of this beloved tradition. Festivities begin with the lighting of the courthouse Christmas tree, followed by a lighted parade through downtown. The Mini-Park comes alive with a real snow slide, inflatable activities, a petting zoo, mechanical bulls, and nonprofit food and drink vendors at the Jim Bishop Pavilion. Families can capture memories with Santa in the gazebo and enjoy a street dance featuring live music to conclude the night.

Saturday’s events kick off with Breakfast with Santa at Newman’s Bakery, followed by Market Day on the Square and the Farmers Market under the Jim Bishop Pavilion, featuring over 80 vendor booths, food trucks, live music, and performances. Additional attractions include carriage rides and a drive-thru living nativity at St. John’s Lutheran Retreat Center, open Saturday and Sunday evenings. This family-friendly event offers a delightful blend of traditional holiday activities and small-town charm, making it a must-visit for those seeking a festive experience.

BELLVILLE MARKET DAY is a beloved community event held on the first Saturday of each month—excluding January, June, July, and August— in the heart of historic downtown Bellville, Texas. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the courthouse square transforms into a vibrant marketplace featuring local artisans, crafters, and food vendors offering handmade goods, antiques, jewelry, and more. Live music by local favorite Trail Boss Troy Arndt adds to the festive atmosphere, making it a delightful outing for the whole family. Simultaneously, the Bellville Farmers Market operates from 9 a.m. to noon at the Jim Bishop Pavilion in Chesley Park, just a block off the square, providing fresh, locally sourced produce, meats, baked goods, and other farm products. Admission and parking are free, offering a perfect way to enjoy small-town charm and community spirit.

The DOWNTOWN BELLVILLE CHOCOLATE WALK is an annual Valentine’s-themed event held on the Thursday before Valentine’s Day in historic downtown Bellville. Running from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., participating businesses—marked with red balloons—invite visitors to collect chocolate treats and have their cards stamped. Collecting stamps from at least 10 stores enters participants into a drawing for a substantial shopping spree. This event offers a delightful way to explore local shops, indulge in sweet treats, and enjoy the festive atmosphere of Bellville’s charming square.

FALCON Center at Faith Academy Bellville

CELEBRATING DECADES OF TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION

By Michelle Banse, photos by Kara Kleimann

What began in a former radio station with a handful of students has grown into a transformative educational ministry—now spanning more than 50 acres and serving generations of families in Bellville and surrounding counties. At the center of it all is Merlene Byler, FALCON Director and Executive Advisor at Faith Academy Bellville, who has quietly shaped the lives of hundreds of students over the past 31 years. FALCON, an acronym, stands for Faith Academy Learning Connection of Neurodevelopment.

“I never set out to start a school ... God did it,” said Byler, founder and director of the FALCON Center at Faith Academy Bellville. “I had a grandchild who struggled a little bit in school and so I was very interested.” And it grew from there with the encouragement of her daughter and three granddaughters. One child at a time.

Today, the FALCON Center has evolved into a pioneering program focused on students and athletes alike who want to thrive academically and physically, and serves approximately a third of the school’s 330 students. “I had no credentials, I had no experience, and I kept looking for those—the people that did,” Byler said. “And God just kept sending kids.”

Faith Academy wasn’t part of the original plan. When the founding committee behind the school had to step away, Byler pushed to keep the vision alive. “I kept saying, ‘We’ve got to keep it going,’” she said. “I was probably obnoxious at the time, so they finally said, ‘Why don’t you?’ And I said, ‘No, no, no!’”

But a conversation with Doug Hodges, a local supporter who offered to serve as a board member, changed her mind. “That was kind of devastating to me, because I thought, ‘All by myself, I could have backed out.’ But now I had somebody who was going to say, ‘I’ll help you,’ and I felt accountable.”

From the start, Byler leaned on structured instruction and what she calls “God-given instinct.” While public schools were moving away from phonics in the mid-1990s, she said her students thrived with it. But even after learning to read, some children continued to struggle, leading Byler to explore deeper neurological avenues for help.

Continued on page 40.

Facing page, FALCON Center founder – Merlene Byler; from top, Alex Dorton gets a high-five from Mrs. Byler after a successful ping-pong match, which helps to improve coordination, focus and other fine motor skills; third graders Stella Burson and Autumn Maley try to beat the clock matching number and letter cubes; FALCON trainer Dr. Monte Kimpel uses an interactive metronome to assess Weston Lapham’s cognitive and sensory skills.

GROWING IN FAITH

Left, The FALCON program is part of all Pre-Kindergarten students daily schedule; these students are working on coordination and remembering skills, crawling across the mat to choose specific colors assigned to them; right, Stella Burson tackles the rock-climbing wall, which aids students in a variety of coordination and concentration skills.

WHAT MAKES FALCON DIFFERENT?

Whole-Child Approach: Students receive personalized support that includes brainbody integration, emotional regulation and spiritual growth.

KEY MODALITIES USED:

• Vision Training: Helps coordinate eye-brain connection for reading and tracking/ helps the brain process what the eyes see

• Auditory Processing Support: Ensures hearing is accurately translated into understanding

• Primitive Reflex Integration: Targets developmental milestones missed in infancy

• Movement-Based Learning: Uses rhythm and balance to strengthen neurological connections

“A child can’t sit still in their chair—not because they’re disobedient, but because of an unintegrated reflex from birth. Once you know that, you teach differently.” – Merlene Byler

“All kids love to learn. Why don’t they?” she said. “That was the driving force—to figure it out. We started with vision, then audio processing, and later added other modalities including  primitive reflex integration.”

She explains that many of the challenges students face—trouble sitting still, visual tracking issues, or difficulty with reading—stem from early developmental gaps, often linked to birth or infant experiences. “If you have a child who had a cesarean birth or a traumatic birth, they may still have unintegrated reflexes from the womb,” she said. “That can lead to them being labeled as behavior problems when really, it’s neurological.”

The FALCON Center’s approach has since expanded to include visual and auditory training, balance and movement integration, and most recently, nutrition. “We’re going to be launching a nutrition program,” Byler said. “We’re making sure we’re serving the most nutritious meals possible, and we’re educating parents too, because diet impacts learning and behavior.”

Byler is also spearheading two new outreach efforts: community education for seniors and a prenatal program to help new parents understand the importance of early movement and development. “Nobody else is telling them the importance of crawling,” she said. “We just feel, because we know this, we need to share it.”

Now 79, Byler has no plans to retire. “People always ask me that,” she said, smiling. “And I just say, I’ll be here as long as God says ‘be here’. And meanwhile, I’m having a great time training others and learning things we don’t know.”

For Byler, the measure of success is not in test scores or grades— but in the lives changed. “My hope is that when kids leave here, they’re avid readers and that we’ve taught them enough about Jesus and the Bible that it becomes their favorite book,” she said. “And that they keep learning. That’s the heartbeat of FALCON.”

BELLVILLE, TEXAS: A Historic Community with a Strong Local Backbone

Tucked into the heart of Austin County, Bellville, Texas, blends smalltown charm with the infrastructure and services of a community that punches above its weight. With a population of approximately 4,000 residents, Bellville serves as the county seat and thrives as a hub of history, culture, and civic engagement. The city’s rich heritage is reflected in its well-preserved courthouse square, vibrant local events, and strong sense of community. Families are drawn to the area for its excellent schools, affordable cost of living, and proximity to both Houston and the rolling Texas Hill Country.

Bellville’s city government operates under the leadership of Mayor Arlie Kendrick and City Administrator Shawn Jackson, with a city council made up of Aldermen Betty Hollon (Position 1), Robert Hancock (Position 2), John Conley II (Position 3), Monte Richardson (Position 4), and Garrett Dornon (Position 5). Civic services are centralized through the City of Bellville offices at 30 S. Holland Street, where residents can access utilities and other essential support. Public safety is a high priority, with Police Chief Jason Smalley overseeing the Bellville Police Department at 162 N. Chesley, reachable for non-emergencies at 979-865-3122.

As the county seat, Bellville also houses many of Austin County’s key offices. The Austin County Courthouse stands proudly at One East Main Street, while the Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Jack Brandes, operates out of 417 N. Chesley. The county’s appraisal district, located at 906 E. Amelia Street, ensures fair and equitable property assessments across the area.

Education is a focal point for the city, supported by Bellville Independent School District, headquartered at 518 S. Matthews. Residents also enjoy access to the Bellville Public Library at 12 W. Palm Street and several recreational services coordinated through the city’s Parks & Recreation Department, (979) 865-3136.

At the state and federal level, Bellville falls within Texas Senate District 18, represented by Lois Kolkhorst, and Texas House District 85, represented by Stan Kitzman. Federally, the area is part of U.S. Congressional District 10, led by Congressman Michael McCaul. Austin County Judge Tim Lapham presides over county operations with dedication and a focus on community needs.

From local government to utilities, postal services, and power— provided by San Bernard Electric Cooperative at 309 W. Main Street—Bellville exemplifies small-town efficiency. As it continues to grow, this historic Texas town remains rooted in community values, offering a welcoming place to live, work, and thrive.
