t was an absolute joy to work with these three young ladies. Not only are Alyssa Valdez, Dennise Lazaro and Ella de Jesus members of the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team, they are also roommates at Eliazo Hall, the university dormitory for girls. They laugh easily, chat incessantly, and went through the different poses like they were professionals. Because they knew each other’s likes and dislikes, personality quirks and pet peeves, they supported each other at every turn. The three

2 vibe

girls make for one happy unit, and perhaps that’s one of the reasons why the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team became champions of Season 76 of the UAAP.

PROMISING TALENTS

Though coming from different backgrounds, all three took to volleyball at an early age. Dennise was taught by her mom, who was a varsity player in Letran during her college years. Alyssa picked up the game from her older brothers. Ella learned to play in school. The girls showed potential

early on and in their fourth year in high school, they were recruited by the coaches of Ateneo. Alyssa, who was then playing for the University of Santo Tomas, was surprised at the offer. She had been recruited by the coaches of UST when she still in her elementary years in Batangas. She says, “I really started in UST. That’s where I learned the game. They were really patient with me, so I would always be grateful to them.” Eventually, Alyssa joined Team Ateneo. And so did Ella, who came from Saint James Academy in

cover story Malabon, and Dennise, who studied at Colegio San Agustin in Makati. Though the girls were thrilled to be athletic scholars in one of the country’s top universities, they knew that they would have to work doubly hard to stay there. “Studying in Ateneo, you have to exert a lot of effort,” says Alyssa. Athletes are not given any type of preferential treatment, so they have to be diligent in their studies to maintain their grade point average, she shares. “It was overwhelming,” Dennise says of her first year in school. A Biology student, she had to deal with all sorts of academic challenges, from research papers to long tests. Like her teammates, she learned how to manage her time early on. She says, “Right after gym, I study right away. I prioritize.” She also learned how to focus on the task at hand. When Dennise is in training with her team, she only thinks about the game. When she is studying for a test, she only thinks about her class.

“We’re not just teammates, we’re also friends, sisters. It’s like we’re a family, all-in-one!” All their hard work has paid off as they are all doing well on and off the court. Ella adds, “At the Ateneo, I feel safe. Inside the campus, it is literally very safe. When you graduate, you are also safe because you will benefit from your education. Your future is secure.”

TEAM ATENEO

Striking a balance between their academic obligations and their training schedule can be quite difficult. Oftentimes, the girls and their teammates are hardly left with any social life at all. Dennise says, “My social life is with my team. But we have a lot of fun. It’s like we’re a family.” Since most of them live in the dormitory, they get to hang out after they are done for the day. Alyssa adds, “We’re not just teammates, we’re also friends, sisters. It’s like we’re a family, all-in-one!” Most of the time, they eat or order out with Dennise saying, “Eating is our favorite pasttime. No diets!” Sometimes though, they get to go off-campus as well, and TriNoma is one of their favorite haunts. “We watch movies at TriNoma. We shop,” says Alyssa. Dennise adds, “We go around, watch movies, eat. My favorite is to shop: Zara, Topshop, Mango. I like it here because it has everything. It has good restaurants. The moviehouse is nice. The shops, everything is here. Perfect!”

“TriNoma is super complete. Because we don’t have a lot of time, we like it because it has everything. When we go to a mall, everything should be there so that we don’t waste time... The best is the moviehouse, we watch a lot of movies here,” says Alyssa. Of course, it was some kind of miracle that they were able to get away from school at all. When Thai coach Anusorn “Tai” Bundit first took over their training, he had his doubts, recalls Dennise. Physically, the girls weren’t strong. “We didn’t have any muscles. We were like jelly,” Dennise says. But Coach Tai was committed to making them stronger, faster players, and had them train twice a day, from 6am to 8am, and then again from 5pm to 8pm. Says Dennise, “We found it difficult at first, training twice a day, but then after awhile, we got used to it. We saw the improvement in each other.” Truth be told, the Lady Eagles did not expect to snag the championship at all. When the season started, only two of their six starting players remained; their star players had graduated. How then could they hope to defend their second place standing? Dennise says, “Our goal at the start was to make it to the Final 4. We were being realistic. Of course, we wanted to be champions, so we just worked hard during training. We followed our coach. We helped each other out.”

When they started winning, the girls were taken completely by surprise. Ella says, “We thought, ‘How are we able to do this?’” The star players of seasons past may be long gone, but new ones stepped up to take their place. It helped as well that Coach Tai knew exactly how to motivate the girls. Ella recalls, “We did not pressure ourselves, and there was also no pressure coming from our coach. The mindset of our coach was that he wants us to play happy. When we start doubting ourselves, he’ll motivate us. He’ll say, ‘You’re a good player. You can do it. No pressure. Enjoy!’” “It’s the little things that we all did. All of us sacrificed. All of us trained hard. These are what brought us to the finals. It’s also strategy. Since we are not big, we had to play smart. Our bond as a team also helped. We knew each other very well. There were no conflicts. Communication is a big factor,” says Alyssa. Dennise says, “Coach Tai always told us: You have to play happy. You have to play as a team. You have to have heart strong. Though the words were simple, it meant a lot. So every game, we played happy, with unity, and with our hearts strong, and it helped to get us to where we are now.” With such a happy philosophy, there is no doubt that the Lady Eagles would continue to soar high in the future! ■

Making Diners Happy The staff of California Pizza Kitchen tell us why they love their work.

LEVIE

CATHERINA

That her last name means happiness may be the reason why it’s such a joy to talk to Catherina P. Maligaya. CPK TriNoma’s kitchen shift leader, Catherina has been with the food company for the past 15 years. “CPK is like my home,” she says. Catherina started out a line cook, but was soon promoted into a supervisorial position. She says, “I lasted this long because it’s fun at CPK.” Her work load, she adds, doesn’t seem heavy at all because they help each other out at the branch. They work together like a family. It also helps that TriNoma is very accessible, and so going to work is never an issue. She adds, “There are a lot of opportunities for growth in CPK.”

MILO

Milo V. Sunga, storekeeper, started out as a busboy, taking away the plates and cleaning the tables the minute the guests leave. When management discovered that he had exemplary computer skills, he was quickly offered another position. Today, Milo is the storekeeper and he’s in charge of ordering stocks, monitoring inventory and managing costs. Milo couldn’t be happier to work for an organization that rewards hard work and talent. At CPK TriNoma, he adds, they are like a family. When there’s a problem, everybody pitches in to make things work. He is particularly happy to be posted in TriNoma as it is very near his home and offers a lot of options for leisure and entertainment. He says, “I like hanging out in TriNoma.”

In his two years of working at CPK TriNoma, Levie P. Calma, certified server, will forever remember the one time that his guests wrote him a note of gratitude. It was around Christmas, and a couple was celebrating at CPK. After their meal, the guests wrote Levie a note, thanking him for the wonderful service and promising to come back soon. Levie was thrilled. He kept the note, and the couple did eventually come back to dine at CPK once again. That’s just one of the many things that Levie likes about working at CPK TriNoma. He also enjoys the many training programs that the international brand offers as well as the good camaraderie that he and his colleagues share. He says, “It’s like we are a family. There’s a mother, a father, Kuya, and Ate.” He particularly likes being assigned to TriNoma as it is near his home. When he gets to spend leisure time with his nephews and nieces, he brings them to Timezone for some much-needed playtime.
