Free Spirits Meet Kiko, Pio, Trixie, Irish, and Nesza. More than being members of the award-winning UP Pep Squad, they’re also fun-loving, goaloriented individuals driven by their passion to dance their hearts out while serving their community. Clothes by The Ramp: Crossings Make-up by Acqua Salon

porting svelte figures and shaved heads, the University of the Philippines Pep Squad tumbled, twirled, and flew through the air winning the UAAP Cheerdance Competition for the third straight year. After months of training and practicing, they managed to pull a triumphant routine that featured a combination of synchronized movements and fabulous

formations. Needless to say the audience was impressed. But then, rigorous training is just par for the course for these exemplary athletes, who devote about four to six hours a day, five days a week to the squad. Kiko Cortez, who joined the squad in the summer of 2008, reveals, “Depending on the day, we take jazz classes, gymnastics classes, or core and strength conditioning.

After our regular classes, we do our stunts training and practice dances for upcoming shows. It’s physically tiring but, as our coaches always tell us, it’s mind over matter. At the end of the day, it’s what we tell our minds that our bodies will do. Pagod lang ‘yan, lilipas din ‘yan.” A gymnast since he was eight years old, Kiko says, “I have always wanted to join the squad since I’m not used to having

spare and dull time. Besides, I love being active.” Pio Niño Opinaldo wasn’t really planning on joining the team because he didn’t have a dance and gymnastics background. But one of his professors, who happens to be the squad’s assistant coach encouraged him. “He said that I don’t have to have a dance background to join the team because all I need to have is the willingness to learn and dedication to train,” Pio recalls. A mentor also encouraged Nesza “The best part of Isabel Salvador to being in a team is join. She recalls, “My getting to perspire, coach in high school, aspire and inspire Brent Viray, inspired with people who me to audition… He are as driven and believed that great as passionate opportunities await as I am.” me there. I’m one of the flyers of the team. I love the way our coaches handle us. They make us “be” perfect!” Indeed, for these young athletes, being part of the UP Pep Squad has been a life-changing experience. Apart from playing a significant role in boosting school morale, Trixie Segundo says, “I get to share what I love doing with people who also share the same passion. Not only do I get to dance with these people but also, I get to discover skills that I have, share them, and serve the community, my family, and my country.”

“You have the freedom to express yourself… Most of the time you are surrounded by brilliant, intelligent, and creative people so you’ll also feel brilliant, intelligent, and creative every time you go to school.” Pio says, “You have the freedom to express yourself… Most of the time you are surrounded by brilliant, intelligent, and creative people so you’ll also feel brilliant, intelligent, and creative every time you go to school.” “In UP, there is this freedom that we have as constituents of a free university,” says Kiko. “It is not the kind that allows us to do everything we want. It is the kind that gives us the opportunity to achieve greatness within and beyond ourselves. Being surrounded by present and future leaders of the country, you get the chance to absorb the greatness around you and use it to nourish your own version of greatness.”

Irish discovered cheerleading in high school and loved it ever since. Of her role in the team, she says, “I am the challenger. I’m really competitive and I like challenging myself and other people to become the best that we can be.” Despite their fervent dedication to the team, members of the UP Pep Squad never lose sight of the importance of academics. Because they have learned to manage their time wisely, they are able to meet their responsibilities as studentathletes. They are also able to enjoy the same things that young college students do like spending time with friends, chilling out at the mall, and going to the movies. Besides they love it at the University of the Philippines—and wouldn’t think of studying anywhere else.

It’s not all work for these young athletes. After their rigorous training, they make sure to spend some downtime at their favorite mall. “I love how hip and chic everything is in it! It caters to different generations from young to old.” —Irish

Irish Adrienne Planes agrees. “The best part of being in a team is getting to perspire, aspire and inspire with people who are as driven and as passionate as I am,” she says.

Fashion bloggers Kat Dy and Dani Barretto show us how to put together fashion forward outfits from Oxygen and Payless.

Sheer shortsleeved printed blouse, P1,099, brown denim shorts, P749, Oxygen. Suede clog wedges, P1,320, Payless.

DANI Barretto Dani is a fashion design student at the College of Saint Benilde. She’s only been blogging for the past seven months but already, her blog has gained a solid following. Perhaps it’s because Dani absolutely loves blogging. She says, “I’m falling even more in love with it every single day.” Take a peek into her life at www. dani-barretto.blogspot.com

“My first outfit is perfect when going to the mall— simple but still fashionable.”

“My second outfit is perfect for a dinner meeting or dinner with your lovey or girlfriends at the mall. And it’s not too revealing. The peek-a-boo at the back is just right for a night out. And for me, why hide your best assets right? If you’ve got it, flaunt it.” Quick Directory Level 1: Oxygen, 901-3503 Level 3: Payless, 901-3665

KAT Dy Kat has made a career out of her love for beauty and fashion. She was formerly the fashion editor of Cosmopolitan magazine before putting up her own online accessories store and becoming the distributor of Lipcote. Catch her at www.katdyfinds.com.

Polka dot blazer, P1,249, white long-sleeved blouse, P999, polka dot pants, P799, gold necklace, P499, Oxygen. Snakeskin pumps, P2,950, gold chain bag, P750, Payless.

“The peplum is a trendy silhouette but it gives that extra oomph to traditional styles. One trick to wearing peplum: Make sure your waist is defined, wearing a belt achieves this. Navy is this season’s black so I gravitated toward this navy boyfriend-fit pants, pairing it with the tee. To keep the combo from looking too frumpy, I strapped on snakeskin wedges in a lovely rose hue, and added a smart color-blocked satchel into the mix.”

Navy blue striped peplum shirt, P649, navy tapered pants, P999, belt, P499, chunky chain bracelet, P599, Oxygen. Snakeskin wedges, P2,950, navy blue and beige bag, P1,950, Payless.

“Printed pants are a huge hit right now—and I love this polka dot pair from Oxygen. The leg is slim, and it’s so comfy—a great traveling piece! I decided to pair it with a dotted jacket, and a classic button down top for a sophisticated interpretation on the printed jacket-and-bottom trend. The black and white palette kept it from looking too busy. The shoes are from Christian Siriano for Payless, and I love how such a chic pump can come from Payless—the toe cap is actually faux pony hair!”

hose who have tasted J. Co Donuts & Coffee’s gourmet doughnuts are not at all surprised that people line up really early in the morning to grab a dozen or two. Soft and light, their doughnuts come in a dizzying variety of flavors that are both delicious and exciting. Consider J. Co’s bestselling doughnut, the Al Capone. Topped with white Belgian chocolate, it is heaped with a generous amount of roasted California almonds, giving it a flavorful texture.

The Avocado di Caprio plays with two seemingly conflicting flavor profiles: avocado and chocolate. However, one bite of the avocado cream with the dark chocolate slivers will tell you that J. Co is really serious about making great-tasting doughnuts. Of course, what would a doughnut shop be without coffee? J. Co has some of the tastiest—and prettiest. The result of the culinary collaboration of Chef Florabel Co-Yatco (of Elias and Crisostomo) and restaurateur Ricky Laudico (of Sumo Sam and Marciano’s), Dragon Chef promises diners a distinctive culinary experience. The drama starts with the interiors, which can only be aptly described as modern eclectic, from its colorful portraits of Chinese icons framed on the ceiling to its chairs and couches upholstered in rich, velvety hues. But it is the food that’s the main event.

hen you say ribs in Manila, one of the names that readily come to mind is Racks. Known for its fall-off-the-bones Baby Back Ribs, Racks recently opened a restaurant on the second level of TriNoma, its first venture at an Ayala Mall, and diners north of Metro Manila are quick to say, “It’s about time!” On weekends indeed, Racks is filled with families who can’t seem to get enough of its tasty ribs! Apart from its sumptuous Baby Back Ribs, diners also delight in its big serving of crispy light Onion Rings. Fast becoming a favorite is Racks’ Southern Fried Chicken. Wrapped up in a crispy coating, the fried chicken is tender and juicy with just the right amount of spicy flavor. Served with homemade biscuits and honey, it definitely has a Southern feel. Another must-try is the Angus au Jus, the newest addition to Racks’ already impressive menu. It is Angus beef rib-eye seasoned with Racks’ signature steak rub and grilled to perfection. Tales Everlasting This season’s silver screen options have an enduring element about them from the idea of immortality so carefully expounded on in Breaking Dawn and Rise of the Guardians to the timeless literary masterpieces interpreted on film in The Hobbit and The Great Gatsby.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 November 15

One of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2, is set for an epic conclusion when the birth of Edward and Bella’s child, Renesmee Cullen, draws ire from the most powerful vampire coven, the Volturi. The final installment of the worldwide phenomenon orchestrates an exciting ending to the love story that has captured the hearts of millions.

Rise of the Guardians November 28

When a creature of darkness threatens to ruin Christmas, it is up to the Immortal Guardians— Jack Frost, Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and the Sandman—to join forces to save the hopes and dreams of children all over the world. Rise of the Guardians, a mustsee movie from DreamWorks Animation, comes in Digital 3D when it hits theaters this holiday season.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Great Gatsby

December 14

A prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey centers on Bilbo Baggins as he embarks on a quest to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor—an adventure that leaves the hobbit holding the fate of Middle Earth in his hands. Martin Freeman plays the titular role of Bilbo Baggins, and Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen reprise their roles as Gollum and the wizard Gandalf the Grey.

January 8

The Great Gatsby is a captivating film set in 1920’s New York that blurs the lines between love and obsession, dreams and tragic realities. With an acclaimed cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, this F. Scott Fitzgerald classic is masterfully adapted for the big screen once more.
