The Trinity badminton squad is experiencing another successful season, with the First team currently in third place. They may be able to finish second if they can defeat their final round opponents in the coming weeks. An influx of talented and young players coming in from the lower age groups have filled the gaps left by last year’s year 12s. The team has never lacked energy and determination to win every match, nor the desire to always improve one week after another. Every student should be commended for the immense efforts they have all given this season. I am sure that if they continue to progress and improve, the elusive first spot will be taken from Camberwell Grammar sooner rather than later.

The unforgettable Cross Country season flies by, thrown back to the everexciting start at Marcellin, got everyone ready to rock 'n roll for the 6+ rounds ahead. Frankston, Braeside and the AV rounds came and went before Banyule, a home race and a personal favourite of the calendar. It was followed by Yarra Valley, the highest scoring race of the season - sporting impressive performances (and turn outs) throughout the divisions. The comradery and wittiness presence throughout the XC team is unmatched. As a tradition of Cross Country, we highly acknowledge the team-work spirit that has passed on from OTGs and would like to influence the boys to always be positive and supportive to one and another, which is what helped us to cross the finish line every time. I firmly believe the tough moments in Cross Country will transform boys to become a more resilient member and exercise their tenacity when they are challenged with tribulations in life. Lastly, I wish 2023 Cross Country team can carry on the positive influence they received from this year and strive for greater success next year! George Zhang Capitan

At the beginning of each season, new members join in workouts with the aim of becoming part of the team. This process values the team over the individual, which requires a commitment to this team that is greater than any other. During the middle of the season, every handball, every kick and every step makes a difference. Laborious hard work, in all conditions as required. As the playing season begins, the teams are named, those named have the responsibility of representing their institution, their community and their schools’ colours with pride. Most sports require aspects of teamwork, in first XVIII football there is nothing else. At the time of writing this our First XVIII has won 5 of 8 games in the home and away season, finishing third on the ladder and will go on to play finals. Whilst these hard outcomes are something that should be celebrated, the soft skills our players have learnt through football must be acknowledged. I congratulate each of our players for their commitment to the team. Through this commitment, they lived the ethos that defines the Trinity man. Our footballers can be characterised by the values they lived and shared in every practice and every game. Specifically, our footballers learnt that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. They know each training requires everyone at their best in order for the team to progress. AGSV football teaches our boys to take pride in their communities, it fosters social capital, their service to others and the greater character of each boy.

Congratulations to the AGSV Hockey Premiers for 2022! In our first full season of hockey since 2019, the TGS First XI have continued the success of the last few seasons, ending up second on the ladder and earning a spot against Camberwell Grammar in the Grand Final. Trinity and Camberwell are current co-holders of the 2021 Premiership Cup, so this was to be a worth decider. Although Grand Final underdogs, having gone down to CGS in our last game, the T-Boys stunned the more favoured rivals, racing out to a 3-0 lead by half-time. A 3rd quarter goal against us kept the tension high, but every player held firm, played their role and we ended up retaining the Cup for a well-deserved “three-peat”. The team has been ably led by co-Captains Dex Kelly and Sam Rusjan, having played in the Firsts since Year 9 and Year 8 respectively. Given the disrupted nature of school and club hockey over the past two years, it has been great to see how well the team has gelled into a formidable attacking outfit. In the home-and away season we lost only to Camberwell in a close encounter. Against other teams the scoreline was sometimes in excess of 10 goals, showing the power of our strikers, but also the depth across all positions. We scored 38 goals across the 6 games, with only 8 against. This season we will farewell the following Year 12s – Callan Baker, Justin Eaton, Jonty Fewster, Charlie HunterScott, Dex Kelly, Sam Rusjan and Zach Sparg, and thank them for their combined years of service to the TGS hockey program. We will miss you all! We were fortunate to secure the services of a talented and dedicated coaching team, with Luke Davidson (OTG ’17) as Head Coach, Tom Carey (OTG ’19) as Assistant Coach, also joined by Bevan Fernandes. All three are current Premier League players and have brought their up-to-date wealth of knowledge to the program. Congratulations to Sam Rusjan, Lachy Hodgson and Joel Taylor, who all made Victorian U18 State teams this year, and to Lachy for being named Captain of the U16 SSV Victorian team. Thank-you to all the amazing parents and supporters who helped us get to the end of the season (almost) unscathed! Your positivity and hospitality was a key contributor to our success.

Kayaking Callan Baker (C) Michael Fan Reece Harrison Justin Kwong Tom Ladson Alastair Murphy With the arrival of outrageously cold mornings and slippery mud, so too did the 2022 Winter Kayaking Season begin. The return, and for a few, the beginning of their Winter Season brought many bitter-sweet smiles to the faces of the less-than-awake boys on a Saturday morning. Thanking all higher beings for the amazing Nelo thermals, we trudged and slipped our way down the dew-ridden grass to the partially submerged dock. The frigid water, all the way from the Yarra Ranges, brought with it many difficulties such as cold hands and the need for beanies, but more satisfyingly it brought the sweat and steam from the backs of the boys after a long hard training session, expertly planned by the coaches Nathan Jones and Chris Burns. These cold mornings only prepared us for our first race at Tay Creggan. The frosty conditions were nothing we weren’t used to and allowed the older boys to introduce and push the new youngsters in a race environment. A large majority of the squad walked away with podium finishes from that day, eager for their next chance to best the other schools. A special thank you goes to Ms. Corney who kept the day extremely organized and efficient in terms of registration and general information so we all arrived on time. Training continued as normal for many and for keen paddler Michael Fan the daunting event of State Marathons approached. After performing feats of wonders there and securing himself a gold medal, he moved on and represented Victoria at the National Championships on the Gold Coast. It’s certainly been an interesting season for our First XV, and one characterised by old dogs of the game paving the way for those perhaps newer to the sport. Indeed, the season itself has been marred by injury, with our esteemed captain Ben finally succumbing to the bane of his existence (i.e. his self-proclaimed “hyper-mobile shoulders”) and Kevin suffering a legitimate injury to his tibia. This season has also seen a mixed bag of students come together, with our leaders (largely Fionn) leading by example and coercing the ‘bad eggs’ (largely Ben) into giving their all for the team. This internal ambivalence has been reflected in the team’s performance, with our record hosting both convincing wins and losses; the ‘Brighton Miracle’ now rings true with a painful irony. Regardless, we all thank our coaches for working tirelessly to help us achieve as much as possible in the rugby sphere – with special thanks to Mr Botha, Rayza and, of course, Mr Sherratt. Marc Petheriotis The 2022 season began with three excellent trial games against Carey Grammar, Xavier College and Melbourne Grammar where the boys went undefeated in the lead in to Round 1 against Mentone Grammar at home. In what was a one-sided affair Trinity won 8-1 with Ben Chiew scoring a hattrick, Marc Petheriotis scoring first two AGSV goals for the School while Billy Thatcher, Dante Siccita and Kosta Antonopoulos each netted a goal. Round 2 v Yarra Valley was a similar story with a 9-0 win and multiple goal kickers. Isaiah Davies made his debut for the team. The Mitre Cup versus Camberwell in the team’s first away game was a classy display of soccer with the team scoring 10 goals (James Rallis hattrick, Marc Petheriotis 2, Billy Thatcher 1, Sam Pollock 1, Nick Mitrevski 1, Riley Foxe 1 and Kosta Antonopoulos 1). In Round 4 the top of the table clash with PEGS was eagerly anticipated by the School community and the game delivered what the fans were after. Despite conceding 3 goals early in the first half, Dante Siccita perfectly executed penalty gave the Trinity team a glimmer of hope coming in to the second half. As the PEGS goal was peppered with shots from Kasra Karamad, Billy Thatcher and James Rallis, Marc Petheriotis was able to slot one past the goalkeeper with 10 minutes left but unfortunately the score line remained 3-2 with PEGS surviving Trinity’s fight back.
In what would be a first for both teams Round 5’s away clash on the South Ground at the Ivanhoe Grammar campus was quite the setting. With Ivanhoe yet to record a win they came out with nothing to lose and held strong defensively before Kasra Karamad silenced the large crowd overlooking the ground. The second half opened up more for Trinity and Ivanhoe scored an own goal which was followed by a brilliant run and finish by Nick Mitrevski. Lewis Crompton was a clear stand out as most valuable player. Round 6 under lights on the Hudson Oval was yet another special occasion for the Team in what would be a hard-fought battle against a stubborn Peninsula side who came to play and play well. Thankfully Kasra Karamad was able to head in from a Dante Siccita corner kick and the game remained 1-0 with only 3 minutes left when Marc Petheriotis slotted in his 7th for the season. For a 5th year in a row the Bulleen Cup remains at Trinity after a magnificent final round of soccer against Marcellin. From the outset Trinity showed their dominance and determination for the ball and created a number of excellent chances on goal. Marc Petheriotis made the breakthrough 30mins in. Marcellin managed to pinch one back early in the second before a sublime run and finish from James Rallis at left back sent the crowd in to raptures. Stell Zois was significant in goals as well making some crucial saves throughout the game and in some tight scenarios. The game ended 3-1 and meant the team finished second on the AGSV ladder with the right to host the home semi-final against Marcellin the week after. An enormous thank you to Andrew Skoullos for coaching, training, guiding and mentoring the team in 2022. His countless hours of work and preparation has not gone unnoticed, and the team is forever grateful. Thanks also to John Kyrgios the Director of Soccer for his knowledge and support to develop the school program and its coaches. Darcy Varghese David Yan This season of very prestigious Winter Tennis has been defined by extreme success. Showing great comradery and prowess we triumphed over all; even the Winter Tennis powerhouses of Melbourne Grammar, Scotch, Xavier, and Haileybury were no match. Commemorations go to Miles and Spencer for their endless energy and everlasting commitment, matched only by the vigorous George Yang and potent Justin Zhu, our captains. Our MVPs were David Yan as a great boon to both first teams, proving himself as our local Federer; kind, enthusiastic and incredibly good, and Cooper Hall, our local Kyrgios; passionate. A very special thanks to our patient and overqualified coaches Jemma Carbis and Nick Wade, as well as our manager Jason Mahmoud for his great communication and organisation.
