Three kinds of giving that together make an independent school successful: Annual Giving, Capital Giving and Endowment Giving. Trinity consistently achieves Annual Giving participation rates that place it at the top of all independent schools in Virginia. Annual Giving dollars directly benefit the annual operating budget and support all students, faculty, and current programs. Our Future Pathways Capital Campaign has raised more than $7 million toward the construction of the Estes Athletic Center, Aycock Stadium, and the Perkinson Arts Center. Last year, Trinity embarked on an endowment campaign in honor of Emily Huffman McLeod who recently retired as Trinity’s director of admission. Gifts from this fund will be used to support low-income students.
Grants affirm Trinity’s strength Trinity has received $170,000 in grants in the past 12 months to be used to support the enrollment of low-income students. “We have been fortunate to receive generous gifts from foundations and trusts,” said Director of Development Laurie Hedgepeth. “Each time an outside funding source agrees to be a partner in our school’s mission, our students benefit.” The Shelton Short, Jr. Trust awarded Trinity $60,000 in December 2013, joining the Hunter Trust and the Moses Nunnally Jr. Charitable Trust in granting funds for student support. The Nunnally gift, a $50,000 challenge, helped stimulate the initial funding of the Emily Huffman McLeod Scholarship Fund in spring 2013.

“Foundations and trusts receive hundreds of requests, and have to make tough decisions about which initiatives to support,” said Hedgepeth. “At Trinity, we have a powerful story to tell, and the numbers to back it up.” According to Hedgepeth, Trinity’s Annual Giving participation rates are a key factor. “When I can show that more than 80% of Trinity parents and 100% of Trinity faculty support the school each and every year, it shows how generous our own community is,” she said. “It’s a critical indicator of the strength of our mission. I hope our donors know that their annual gift makes a powerful statement, and that each gift can lead to additional support.”
